Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Overview of Ancient Greek Coinage.......2004-12-06

I agree with other reviewers that this book is an excellent introduction to ancient Greek coins collecting.

What I also liked about this book is:

1)The list of major issuing cities with brief but interesting comments regarding the cities' history (e.g. the dramatic events such as the destruction of Messana by Carthaginians)

2) The list of the rulers of major Hellenistic dynasties (reading about these people's lives and seeing their faces on coins is really impressive)

3) Masterpieces of Greek Art section featuring 25 beautiful coins which are among the author's favourites (I personally liked about 20 of those).

One of the things you learn from this book is that you don't actually have to OWN these beautiful coins to ENJOY them. All it takes is willingness to spend your time and energy to explore these treasures from the past.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful introduction to ancient Greek Coin collecting.......2003-08-13

Having collected ancient coins for decades, I must confess to a real fondness for the Sayles books, and for this one in particular. It is beautifuly illustrated, as well as informative, and makes the reader truly want to own the coins which Sayles discusses. One thing which makes this better for new collectors than some other books, is that Sayles isn't touting ancient coins as an investment. They are NOT a sound investment for the average collector, who can expect a 30% or higher LOSS when reselling the coins which most average collectors can afford to buy -- beautiful as they are, the typical coins which the average collector can afford are NOT going to shoot through the roof in value, even if they are extremely rare or unique. The market strength and bullish demand isn't present to allow the average collector to profit from most of his or her coins. What makes the Sayles book appealing is its inspiration for readers to COLLECT these coins and treasure them, as they have been treasured for thousands of years, and YES, it is thrilling indeed to buy a coin of which only two or three other specimens are known in the world, and -- YES! -- it is possible to own coins which are absolutely unique. Thanks to generations of dedicated collectors, it is even possible to buy -- for small sums -- coins which have established provenances dating back a century or more. My own collection includes coins once owned by President John Quincy Adams and by J. P. Morgan, but they each cost less than some best-selling potboiler novels which will be forgotten by next season. Read Sayles and begin to dream!!!

4 out of 5 stars As a beginner resource, great!.......2002-09-05

Sayles' prose has a way of bringing alive some great coins. It is a great way for a beginner to become both more interested in the hobby as well as developing the principle of purchasing books in field of study rather than buying every forgery and fake on the market. The biggest drawback is that you really need Volume I as an introduction to the series and collecting, then pick up the other volumes as your interests expand. It took me about two years to get all six volumes. They're worth it at a reasonable price, but no substitute for other standard reference works. You can also loan them out to friends to get them interested.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Book!.......2001-01-21

In roughly 200 pages that are divided into 6 chapters and 4 appendixes with copious illustrations and brief bibliographies throughout - this book is beautifully jammed with coins and information. Following the example of the first volume, this book is in plain language and is easy on the eyes in it's print, format, tables and charts.

The bulk of this book deals with differing coin types from differing geographical areas and and the artistry of the larger series. This really does a new collector a big favor because the new collector gets to purview a plethora of coin types from throughout that series and it may go a long wat to help them decide what they would like to collect. What is really important about this book is the focus on the coiner or "celator" and what he did and the role he played as artist and the chapter on "Masterpieces of Greek Art" is a beautiful read by itself with large B&W illustrations of some of the most aesthetically pleasing coins in the series.

The great strength of this book is that it is equally beautiful and useful and the author obviously loves what he is writing about rather than giving a very dry, scholarly and perfunctory survey. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for the coin enthusiast.......1998-04-04

If you are as fascinated with ancients as I am, you MUST have this book. You will love how easy it is to read and you will constantly refer back to it.

As a student of Art and Fashion I discovered this treasure in the college library and borrowed it relentlessly. Only the designs of the late Erte have given me such awe of creation. This book truly showcases the essence of Zandra's textile and clothing masterpieces. By way of photographs, sketches, diary, and travelogue we're given colorful insight to the thought processes supporting her works of design. Though Rhodes flourished in 70's/80's Britain, she was one of the first designers to really tap into the current theme of multicuturalism. She takes the world around her and transforms it magically to her own artform. Anyone interested in Fashion, Art, or Design will appreciate this book's concept.

                    Book Description

This is the screenplay for the acclaimed film, directed by Wes Anderson. There were three extraordinary children in the Tenenbaum family; Chas Tenenbaum (Ben Stiller) was a financial expert and started buying real estate in his early teens; Margot Tenenbaum (Gwyneth Paltrow) was an acclaimed playwright and won a Pulitzer Prize in the 9th grade; Richie Tenenbaum (Luke Wilson) was a champion tennis player ranked 2nd in the world by the age 17. They were brilliant. They were famous. They were unlucky enough to be the children of a man named Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman). Now for the first time in 25 years, they're all living together under the same roof. After having largely gone their separate ways they're looking to mend fences—and themselves in the process.

4 out of 5 stars Must have for Wes Anderson fans........2007-10-03

My favorite thing about this screenplay is being able to read scenes that did not end up in the movie or the deleted scenes. I would recommend this for any Royal Tenebaums or Wes Anderson fan.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb and Unique Screenplay.......2003-01-10

"The Royal Tenenbaums" is really a great and clever film. Although it's not really classified as a solid comedy, it had me laughing aloud from start to finish. Then again, I like that weird kind of humor. To me, it was just a great film that took chances. It wasn't out to win a popularity contest. Wes Anderson makes films the way he envisions them and the way he wants them to be.

The thing that stands out the most in "The Royal Tenenbaums" is the brilliant script that was written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. The dialogue witty and realistic, and each character stands out and leaves an impression on us.

The story is about Royal Tenenbaum and his dysfunctional family. Him and his wife separated many years ago, but the divorce was never final. His wife, Etheline, kept the house and raised the children by herself. They each reached to fame in some way or another, but not without problems lurking about. After many years have passed, Royal finds out that Etheline has been asked to take somebody's hand in marriage. Royal comes up with a scheme on how to get himself back into the picture, bringing forth a crazy and unexpected family reunion like you have never seen.

With only set directions and dialogue, this reads more like a play. There are no camera angels, which is why it reads like a script for a play. You'll appreciate it more if you've seen the movie, but reading it is just as enriching and enjoyable to me. You get to relive your favorite moments and exchanges through words.

"The Royal Tenenbaums" by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson is a magnificent screenplay and can be enjoyed many times over. With great dialogue exchanges, characters, and out-of-control and unpredictable situations, this is a screenplay worth reading over and over again. A work of art, if you ask me.

Favorite line from the movie: "Anybody feel like grabbing a couple of burgers and hitting the cemetery?" - Royal Tenenbaum

5 out of 5 stars This is not a novel..........2002-05-02

It is the screenplay of the movie, the same one that should have won the Oscar this year. For people who haven't seen the movie, reading the screenplay first may not be such a great idea. I know this movie went over a lot of people's heads, and I'm not positive one can fully appreciate the story from just reading it. However, I definately recommend reading it after seeing the movie, there is so much great dialogue that is easily missed and a lot of subtle humor that is more obvious written on the page. This was one of the best movies of 2001 and the screenplay is a great way to appreciate it again while waiting for the dvd.

                    5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY BREATHTAKING.......2002-04-08

I thought that the Royal Tenebaums was one of the best films I have seen this year, after what I thought had been a disasterous year of film making,it was a breath of fresh air, the only other two films I feel are on a level with it are Amelie and The Man who wasn't there!
From the very opening I wanted to go and see the film, with it's bright colours and quirky story line, the very advertisment had me drooling with delight.
I had mixed reviews from some of my friends, some thought it was boring, others hilarious, after going to see it with my brother and sister it was a unanimous decision, this film was AMAZING!
The plot itself was so simple, yet the characters made the film what it was, I absolutely loved Richie and I thought that Pagoda was brilliant, going to see this film has to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Screenplay.......2002-02-28

Just so everyone is aware this is a screenplay and not a book adapted from the movie. It is an excellent screenplay though. All the subtle jokes become much more clear and really funny. It is also full of good pictures from the movie. Totally Hillarious and a pretty good read. A must have for any Wes Anderson fan.

Mr. Rorem's prose is difficult to read. It is a chaotic collection ranging from the useless to the quite informative, from the truly insightful to the really horribly boring. Indeed such a collection falls under the definition of a "private" diary; however, more literary skill is needed when a book is offered to the broad public. Not that it is a complete waste of time - a student of NYC cultural life can find the book fascinating. In fact, Mr. Rorem's writing is so self-centered that nothing in this book really has any true existence except for NYC, the Nantucket home, and possibly Paris from decades ago. That a person with such intellect and talent can be so limited in his perception of the world is beyond my understanding.
I think Mr. Rorem's music is far better than his limping prose.

Ned's diaries contain a running joke about his hatred of Elliott Carter's music. Until it gets to the point where Ned finally says: "I can't prove it, but I don't think that even Elliott Carter likes Elliott Carter's music." I almost croaked when I read that. It's right up there with the time when Evelyn Waugh said to Igor Stravinsky: "All music is painful to me."

                              Book Description

The most detailed resource ever released on accessing divine power and divine favor in the D&D world.

Complete Divine provides Dungeons & Dragons® players with an in-depth look at how to gain the favor of the gods and use that power to a character's advantage. There is a rundown of new gods in the D&D pantheon, in addition to new feats, spells, prestige classes, and magic items. In addition, this title adds new and revised base classes to a player's character choices, and clerics in particular are provided with many new and updated spell domains and spells.
This title also contains a wealth of material for non-cleric characters, so the tips and data provided will assist all class types, including those classes not typically associated with garnering divine power.

5 out of 5 stars Great Add for Divine Spellcasters........2007-05-14

Me, the guy who always plays the Cleric or Druid, could'nt resist picking this up, and it was worth every penny. Lets start with the beginning:
Chapter 1: The Favored Soul, Shunenja, and Spirit Shaman are all nice classes, though I have to say I'll probably only use the first two.
Chapter 2: The best part in my opinion. Every type of Divine spellcaster, and even some arcane spellcasters, has a class here. My favorites are the Pious Templar, Warpriest, and Divine Oracle (all of whitch I hope to become in the near future.)
Chapter 3: The feats of the book where pretty good, but I'll probably only use the Wild Feats, whitch are mostly variations of other feats but with lower prequisites. Some of the divine feats are nice, like Spontanous Healer/Inflict/summoner if your not the apropriate class. It also touched on Epic Divine spellcasters, but all the feats are in Epic Level Handbook, but its good if you dont have it.
Chapter 4: The Relics where a nice touch to the book, and although its exclusive to the core Greyhawk Dieties, It gave me some ideas on artifacts for my campiagn, as well as that of my freind's.
Chapter 5: This chapter gives a synopsis of the rites, worship, temples, and practices of the core dieties as well as others, such as Bahamut and Lolth. It also touches on other minor Greyhawk deities.
Chapter 6: The descriptions of what happens after death in these chapters has silenced many arguements at the table, such as intricacy's in resurrection and how the soul reacts to its new home (Or old one if its devoted to Fharlangh or Vecna. It also decribes Religous groups, though I knew all this stuff already.
Chapter 7: 5 pages of new domains. If thats not enough, alot of new Cleric and Druid spells (As well as Blackguard, Ranger, And Paladin, though not nearly as many of them.) Though most are useful to me, some I'll never even think of agian. But there are always those spells that seem as if they were put there to address something that almost never comes up.
I really like this book, and it ranks with my top 5 most used/useful supplements at #4. I use this book whenever I'm making a Cleric, Paladin, Blackguard, or Druid. If your Pcs don't play these (Why?) then consider other books, but otherwise, read this and I believe you'll find something to make you Diviner's the best they can be.

5 out of 5 stars Great Useful Book.......2007-05-14

This book is great for anyone playing a divine spell caster. Providing good feats and prestige classes.

4 out of 5 stars Back and forth with this one.......2007-03-13

So I've been back and forth over this book a few times, especially once I first got it. After running through it a few times, I've come to the conclusion that it is pretty useful for bits and pieces of using Divine casters in a game.

Like most recent Wizards releases, there's lots of extra material I as a player and DM never use and don't intend on. Too many Prestige Classes. Lots of them take hits on caster level for a special ability, or some other small bonus. It can be hard enough to run a caster at its full casting level without having taking an extra hit.

Most of the magic items or artifacts presented aren't necessarily worth putting into a game without a specific use. Some of the regular magic items I wouldn't want to put in as part of a hoard or random treasure. They seem to be either overpowering or underwhelming, no happy medium.

Feats were hit or miss, either you can use them in a multitude of places and on many types of characters or they were built for one class only. However some of the one class only feats, such as the Wild feats are helpful if you run a Druid to some of the middle and higher levels. Augment Healing was a nice one, a little help with healing every time doesn't hurt, until you get Heal and works good after run out of Heals too.

When it came to classes, I've only be able to get into the Favored Soul. It's a pretty straight forward Divine casting sorcerer. It's got a d8 hit die, weapon focus as a bonus feat and 3 energy resistances through its level progression. Spell casting is a little slow compared to the Cleric, but you can do pretty well with bonus spells per day and a good Charisma score. Plus, you don't prepare spells, you spontaneous cast, which comes in handy when you need to act fast as both the healer and small tank. Wings in the late levels seem more as add on flavor text than as an actual perk of the class.

It's not a bad book overall, I'd suggest snagging a copy if Divine casters are your thing, or borrowing one to make you next cleric, druid or other divine caster.

3 out of 5 stars A decent book at best.......2007-01-04

The complete divine is a decent book, but by no means anything great. Roleplaying is gone over very briefly, and is mostly common sense stuff. There are decent classes that might be fun to roleplay, but don't bring much to the table in terms of originallity. Also, the new spells that are introduced aren't worth too much.

5 out of 5 stars Every Party Needs One.......2006-12-05

The Cleric (or Druid for the very brave) is the literal life-house of the adventuring party...that fact alone warrants the purchase of "Complete Divine".

The classes presented are small (only 3) and only one of those, the Favored Soul (A Divine magic version of a Sorcerer) is likely to see much use outside of a Far-East campaign setting.

Prestige classes make up for the lackluster base classes with 24 prestige classes of various roletypes. These roles range from the battle ready Warpriest (supernatural abilities to cure allies in a radius and other combat-centric buffs) to the combat-prevention Evangelist (perfect for the Bard with a spiritual side). Many of these prestige classes are not so one sided that only clerics gain benefits. In fact nearly every single class has some choice for a prestigious taste of divine magic (including special cases for Monks and Paladins that allow them to continue gaining Monk or Paladin levels after taking the prestige class)

The feats included in this book are likewise useful, especially the ones that follow the form "Exchange one turn undead attempt in order to..." This gives one of the often overlooked abilities of the cleric a chance to shine once again, especially in campaigns with few undead.

The "Relics" section contains items specific for followers of each major Deity in the basic cosmology of the Player's Handbook, but they are best used more as quest items than potential equipment, as many players who aren't clerics or paladins don't bother with choosing a deity, making the number of (fully) usuable items very slim for most parties.

The next 2 chapters cover different aspects of the gods of D
