Turning Kids Onto Art.......2007-01-10
My 9 year old grandson's fave artist is Andy W. and so it seemed natural to give to him. It is colorful, not a terribly big book and maybe a tad young for a 9 yr. old, but he still seemed to like it. Since he actually was Andy Warhol for Halloween last year, I try to buy him anything and everything Warhol I can find so if your child likes Warhol, this is something you should consider.
Andy and all that "POP ART".......2003-02-18
This is a significant book! I recommend it highly. It is especially helpful when wanting to teach young children about POP ART that existed in the early and late 70's. Andy Warhol is an inspiration because he is the first person be begin depicting "everyday life" into his works of art. He modeled the "Campbell's Soup Cans" and the "Marilyn Monroe" icons in order to make a strong point. He believed that much like we consumed mass produced products such as soups we were also "mass consuming" pop icons such a Marily Monroe. He brought out his ideas through many works of art. This is a great way to show young children about POP ART and about Andy Warhol's great accomplishments. Another pop artist that could be correlated with Warhol is Lichtenstein he also depicted "mass consumerism" but with comic books and neat techniques to acquire his pieces of art. GREAT STUFF!!!
This book is required for art teachers!!!.......2002-02-24
This is a must have book for art teachers if your teaching
kids about POP art or Andy Warhol himself. If your an art
teacher and you have the 'getting to know the worlds greatest
artists' series and you don't have the Andy Warhol book than
the first thing you should do is buy this book from Amazon.com
or from your nearest book store.
Book Description
Soup cans! Dollar bills! Movie stars! Paint by numbers! Is it art? Yes! Andy Warhol's art.
Following award-winning artist biographies Degas and the Dance, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Cezanne, an exciting new book from Abrams Books for Young Readers looks at Andy Warhol. A leader of the American art movement known as Pop, short for popular culture, Warhol changed the way we think of art. Assisted by photographs taken of Warhol throughout his life, and examples of his early drawings and best-known works, Susan Goldman Rubin traces his rise from poverty to wealth, and from obscurity to fame.
After attending art school in Pittsburgh, Warhol started a career as a commercial artist in New York, and quickly won acclaim for his creative advertisements. When he turned to real painting, he used his background in commercial illustration and blurred the line between high and low art.
Some critics have said that Warhol's pictures of Campbell's soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles represent American life. But Warhol said, I just paint those objects in my paintings because those are the things I know best. I think of myself as an American artist. Warhol's unique images will appeal to young readers, and inspire them to see the world around them in new ways.

Bright color photos of his art accompany clear explanations of his style and approach........2007-01-06
Andy Warhol took ordinary objects from daily life and transformed them into big paintings and art, becoming known as a leader of the American Pop art movement. ANDY WARHOL: POP ARTIST surveys his career as a commercial artist and his perspective on painting, and is a perfect pick for kids in grades 4-6 who are receiving introductions to modern artists. Bright color photos of his art accompany clear explanations of his style and approach.
Get a shot at Andy Warhol.......2006-10-27
The construction of your average everyday children's book biography is a complex proposition. You have to examine your biographical subject and determine their kid-friendly appeal. If, for example, you are doing a biography of an obscure Pope of limited charm, you may wish to reconsider the task at hand. If, on the other hand, your subject is the infinitely amusing, not to say fascinating, Andy Warhol then you may have better luck. Next, this may shock you, but not all children are the same age. What age group are you writing for? It sounds backwards, but it's sometimes more difficult to write for younger rather than older children. Author Susan Goldman Rubin, however, has taken the challenge and has fashioned a book that someone under the age of 11 might find of interest. Finally, your pictures. With very few exceptions, young kids are not going to pay your book a whole lot of mind unless you find some cool and colorful photos/art with which to spot your book. In this sense, Ms. Rubin has not been entirely fulfilling. And so, "Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter" is a great read and will certainly have young `uns grabbing for it, but it could have been a bit more forthcoming with the pretty pretty pictures of his work. Just my two cents.
He was born Ondrej Warhola in 1928 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Slovakian parents. Never the most athletic of children (at age eight he came down with rheumatic fever), Andy loved comics, paper dolls, and coloring books. Once well, he started going to art classes and it was clear he had found his calling. Readers watch as Andy goes to school, moves to New York, and starts drawing shoes for Glamour magazine. Real pop art was soon to follow as Andy challenged what made something important and worthy of consideration. Can a comic be art if you blow up a frame? What about something as simple as a soup can? What is the worth of celebrity? By showing Andy's life and the choices he made, Rubin is able to show us a man, his unique style, and why that man and style were important to the world.
Rubin takes certain steps to make the book kid-friendly right from the start. The almost picture book size of this ten by ten inch title makes it clear from the get-go that kids who pick this puppy up won't have to contest with any 500+ page tomes. The text then pops out at the viewer on top of colored squares that change their hue with the turn of every page. The author also knows that kids like to read about famous people AS kids, so we get a nice glimpse of Andy's younger years. Mind you, there are only 48 pages in this book and 15 of those are just a Time Line, Glossary, Source Notes, References and Resources, Illustration Credits, and an Author's Note. Now one of my favorite books about Andy Warhol was, "Uncle Andy's", by James Warhola. In that book, Andy Warhol's actual nephew recounted how he used to visit his favorite uncle once a year and discover through him what "art" was. Rubin doesn't mention this detail, but does show and tell about Andy's love of kids. As the book says at one point, " `Children were drawn to Andy like a comic character with his wig askew, glasses and ... jeans,' remembered Bob Colacello who worked for him for twelve years. `Andy loved to talk to kids. He found it interesting.'" And with this book, kids can find Andy interesting right back again.
Here is what I loved. I loved that at the end of the book there was a small section entitled, "Some Museums Where You Will Find Work By Andy Warhol." Why doesn't every single biography of an artist DO this? It is infinitely more useful than some of the other stuff they cram into the back of children's books. Just the same, there is the occasional peculiarity. The Time Line is a bit of an extravagance here. More space filler than anything else, each date included is huge and the nine pages of Time Line after Time Line seem excessive. I would have loved to have seen a lot more of Andy's work in the book too. Just exchange 8 of those Time Line pages for a couple portions dedicated solely to displaying some cool Warhol work and I'm there. Otherwise, it rankles with the rest of the book.
The other day I covered three tables in my library's Story Hour Room with books published in the year 2006. At 4 o'clock that day I led in my homeschooler bookgroup, a small collection of kids between the ages of nine and twelve. I told them that we'd be doing something a little different that week. Instead of everyone reading the same book, the kids would have a chance to grab whichsoever book most tickled their fancy. They'd take it, read it over break, and return it to me the next week. Some kids snatched up Susan Cooper's, "Victory". Others took great pleasure in reading Janet Taylor Lisle's, "Black Duck". And sure as shooting, one of my more reluctant readers found a great deal to love in "Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter". It's a lovable book. There are things that I would have changed about it, but that doesn't make it any less of a wonder. If you're going to have one children's biography of Andy Warhol, let it be this one. Definitely a keeper.
Book Description
An artist, trendsetter and cultural icon, Andy Warhol was as intriguing a character as the art he created. This colorful introduction to an equally colorful personality follows pivotal events in Warhol's life, explores some of his most famous works, and encourages young readers to try their own hands at painting, printmaking and sculpture. The authors' playful text will engage children as it breaks down complex theories into ideas and experiments that are both fun and educational: from making shadow paintings to constructing a time capsule. The text, along with photographs of the artist and reproductions from his work, explore his creative process and the historical events that inspired Warhol's unique vision of the world.

Book Description
The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery houses one of the most highly regarded collections of twentieth-century American art anywhere, including paintings by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Marsden Hartley, Robert Motherwell, Robert Henri, Grant Wood, Frank Stella, and many more internationally renowned artists. Calling the Sheldon collection "exemplary," the art historian and critic Barbara Rose notes: "Because the collection does not reflect fashion, the misguided inspiration of much art collecting today, but is rather an effort of connoisseurship, and informed by an art historical viewpoint, it is certain to remain as durable and exciting tomorrow as it is today." The American Painting Collection of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery offers for the first time a full description of the collection, now numbering more than one thousand works, that has been nearly a century in the making.
The first part of the book presents full-color reproductions of 101 of the most noteworthy paintings in the collection, each accompanied by a brief discussion of the artist and his or her work. The second part, or catalog, consists of a complete inventory of the collection, including for each painting its physical description, provenance, exhibition history, and publication history, as well as a black and white reproduction. Publication of the book coincides with a year-long celebration of the centennial of the Nebraska Art Association, the Sheldon Gallery's support group and one of the oldest continuous arts organizations in the country.

For many, interactive Flash content is viewed through a desktop computer connected to the World Wide Web. For a rapidly growing number of developers and users, though, Flash content goes way beyond the PC. In Flash Enabled: Flash Design & Development for Devices, a talented group of leading-edge Flash developers describe how to create compelling Flash content for everything from cell phones to TVs to ATMs and more.
Far more than a how-to book on Flash development, Flash Enabled takes the reader by the hand into previously uncharted areas of development. Samples, tutorials, and design rules, tips, and theories spanning more than a dozen chapters explain how to create content for PlayStation2, television, Pocket PC handhelds, and, of course, the Web.
The first two sections constitute an introduction to developing Flash content for devices. Discussions on interface design, typography, animation, and game construction are interlaced with sidebars, tips, screen shots, and code examples. Part three details the specifics of creating applications for devices using Flash, and subsequent sections demonstrate how to create content for television and game consoles like PlayStation2.
Contemporary developers face a big challenge when creating a Flash movie; making one that plays on every Web browser with every version of the Flash plug-in on every version of both Windows and Mac operating systems is a feat unto itself. Introducing more platforms with their own limitations is enough to send a Flash developer screaming into the woods. However, creating Flash content that can be viewed on more than just a desktop computer opens doors to growth and larger audiences. The authors of Flash Enabled have already started creating for a variety of platforms, and we can benefit from their experience rather than playing a perpetual game of catch-up. --Mike Caputo
Book Description
Flash Enabled guides Flash designers & developers in creating content and applications for multiple devices with Flash and other tools. Focusing on the Pocket PC platform, this book also discusses considerations in developing Flash for set-top box systems, cell phones, and lays the foundation for devices such as the Palm. The book targets four main concepts: 1)design/development considerations, 2) creating content once & deploying to many platforms, (including info on using MM Generator to author content in Flash and serve it to Palm Pilots and cell phones that don't yet have Flash Players), 3) creating Flash content for Pocket PC, and 4) application development using Flash integrated with middle-ware. Throughout this book the authors provide guidelines, step-by-step tutorials, workflow, best practices, and case studies.
Customer Reviews:
Not deep.......2003-08-01
Nice book, but it only touches some aspects of Flash for devices, never going into much detail, specially when it comes to videogames.
This book made us money - what more can we say?.......2002-12-03
This might not be the sort of application the authors envisioned, but the book certainly helped us! We run a small online casino off the coast of Britain, TheGoldCasino (dot-com), and our development staff is fairly sparse (we're aimed primarily at users of e-gold, so we're not a big operation). We wanted to experiment with mobile games, but we assumed the cost would be prohibitive. Flash Enabled brought our current Flash developers from a state of knowing nothing about the PocketPC to having functional Flash-client prototypes in a shockingly short period of time! I don't know of higher praise for a book like this than: "It changed our business and made us money".
Obviously, it's not yet clear how large the universe of PocketPC gamers with e-gold accounts will be, but this book at least compressed our development time to the point where it is quite easy for our mobile games to be profitable. Great stuff!
very little HOW and a lot of WHAT WILL BE.......2002-09-13
the GOOD and BAD:
First, THE BAD:
I want to make DVD menus with flash. I thought this would show me how, but instead it was a case study of a company called ... that used Flash and a C-Programmer made a connector from Flash to the DVD-OBJECT controller. no code for that. That ..... Don't buy it if that's what you hope to find.
Same with the Interactive Television stuff: Mainly a case study with no practical hows. Kind friggen lame.
There could have been a section on how to create 1 flash file that works on any handheld, desktop, etc. It would have been long, but there are those of us who bought the book and were really disappointed.
I think they were trying to publish the book before this one came out:
amazon.
BUT
Great Branden Hall stuff. that guy is who I want to be. He's amazing. other info on templates and stuff are excellent. top notch.
I'd wait and NOT get this book unless you walk into a bookstore and leaf through it.
If your going to develope flash for PPC you need this book........2002-08-01
I can't put the book down. Making your own applications to run on your pocket pc is future.
Flash Enabled = Flash for Everyone.......2002-07-04
This is truly one of the few books on the market that looks at Flash from various perspectives and nails it. The contributors to this book keep the chapters focused, provide examples in context and realize that most folks out there aren't "code" geeks; there are both creative designers and innovative developers. The number of devices and platforms commented on and "tips and notes" are great.
You might ask "Where is the CD in the back of the book?", well better than that they have a website for the book and the list of useful URL's in the back of the book is awesome and helps everyone grow their skills when it comes to developing for these evolving platforms. As a Macromedia evangelist I recommend a select few books to the customers and end-users this is one of them.

Book Description
Great operatic masterpiece reprinted complete and unabridged from rare, limited and numbered full-score edition (for solo voice, chorus and orchestra), approved by Strauss. Published by Adolph Fürstner, Paris and Berlin, 1910. First inexpensive, high-quality edition.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding in all regards for all Rosenkavalier lovers and musicians generally!.......2007-03-07
Not only is this edition a cheap one: it also has the stamp of authenticity associated with it by being the definitive one issued around the time of its première by Strauss's main publisher, Adolf Fürstner of Berlin, and approved personally by the composer himself. [That original edition is a rare, limited and numbered one - the reprinted copy bears the number 36 in fact.] Barring a very few potential little things, there's every reason to believe it as the authentic edition, so how can one go wrong with it?
This is particularly so given the reproduction size, which allows one not only to easily follow it in one's lap while listening in an armchair (not to mention at a table!); it's easy to conduct therefrom (unless one's visually impaired). Others have written already about its virtues; I can only underscore what's already posted here. A score most certainly deserving to be in every musician's library (and every Rosenkavalier-fan, even if he's not the most fluent in reading music)!
Der Rosenkavalier Vocal Score.......2007-02-19
Just what I wanted. The Dover scores are excellent and at a very good price.
A Boon for Strauss Singers.......2000-07-17
At last, a Rosenkavelier piano/vocal score that's not only affordable, but a real bargain. This score is a reprint of the Furstner piano reduction that costs three to four times less than the original. Like the full score, this piano/vocal reduction was first edited by Strauss' friend and publisher, Adolf Furstner, in the early 20th century. The score has no English translation, but that's no real problem. The volume is well made, as always, and is easy to read. No Opera singer's library is complete without a copy of the piano/vocal score to Der Rosenkavelier. Now, this is the one to buy.
Strauss' most Popular.......2000-07-17
Der Rosenkavelier represented a new type of music drama for Richard Strauss. Prior to this time, his operas were quite hard edged: Salome, the story of a young woman whose erotic dancing skills cost John the Baptist his head, and Elektra, the story of a young woman who avenges her father's murder on her mother and her mother's lover. Der Rosenkavelier is, by contrast, rather tranquil. It tells the story of an older woman who, despite her love for a young man (played by a young woman), assists that young man in winning the love of a young woman. It's drama is small, Chekhovian even, and comparisons have often been made to Mozart's Marriage of Figaro. Dover reprinted a numbered copy, number 36 to be precise, of a limited first printing edited and published in 1910 by Strauss' publisher and friend, Adolf Furstner. This volume is, perhaps, the best buy among all Dover's opera scores, especially for Strauss lovers. This volume contains an English translation of all frontismatter and a glossary of German musical terms. The score is large and legible enough to conduct from, and the rehearsal markers correspond with those of the parts. And, as always, the price is a baseline bargain. If you love this opera, buy this score.
Excellent full size score of this popular opera.......2000-05-13
This publisher offers full orchestral scores of several of Strauss' operas in full size for moderate prices, because they are copies from old editions.
The printing of this score of Der Rosenkavalier, certainly his most popular opera, is excellent, the edition is reliable.
Meanwhile there may be one or two other cheap editions of this score, but not at this size.

It's been done before, but never so well. Like their predecessors, professional crossword editors Stanley Newman and Daniel Starkhave arranged thousands of three to seven letter words so that you can easily find them once you know the position of any two letters. Only they compiled their list from words actually used in crossword puzzles. They even included popular phrases, abbreviations, and proper names. The result may well be the greatest sanity saver ever published for crossword fans. The publishers are so confident in it that they offer a money-back guarantee of their own. I strongly doubt that they'll issue many checks.

The most comprehensive crossword reference--the only one based on actual crosswords. It's guaranteed to have more of the answers you're looking for.

All the solutions are there. What is the organization to quickly find the appropriate known letter positions? The book lacks any explanation as to how to look stuff up.

This is exactly what you'd expect. You've got a couple of letters and need an answer, they're all here. Granted, that's a bit to look through, but desperate times and all that. I found this book particularly good for crossword construction, if you're into that sort of thing.
