excellent resource for artists.......2007-07-25
This book is excellent for artists who want to add an art nouveau touch to their work. It is in black & white, so you have to use your imagination and creativity. There are a variety of sizes and styles, from full page illustrations to borders to small stylized florals. If you do graphic or stylized art, you could probably find inspiration here.
Great book - I only wish it were in color!.......2007-05-18
This book is wonderful, my only complaints are that it doesn't have every letter of the alphabet - they tease you with only a few of them! And I would have loved some color images, but other than that, great buy for the price!
Art Nouveau graphics books.......2000-10-18
This is a great book, covering a broad range of Art Nouveau styles & designers. If only it were available on CD!

Depraved, raunchy, sickening... and freakin' hilarious.......2001-12-23
Good grief- the things I do to entertain myself. I walked into the local comic shop one day and decided to hit the Adult Comics section, which consisted of a small, cramped room with numerous shelves of some of the nastiest smut ever imagined by comic artists. I started my little adventure by taking a peek at what the horndogs from the Far East have whipped up, and cracked open the first issue of Super Taboo. What I discovered was one of the most shocking, depraved, and disgusting examples of hardcore hentai manga I've ever laid eyes on. It was also one of the most hilarious reads I've ever experienced. Who knew a young man's (mostly unsuccessful) battles to control his sick, incestuous urges would be such a gut-busting yuk-fest? Of course, when mom & sis (and a college instructor) are practically askin' for it, how can a guy resist? Especially when he's got an evil and unbelievably randy second personality that comes to the forefront whenever he's, um, "properly stimulated". The high point of this book's humor: mom says grace before commencing a little family fun!
Yeah, I know what you're thinking after reading the previous paragraph: "What kinda sick weirdo are you?", you're saying to yourself. What can I say, I'm very adept at finding humor in the most unlikely places. But if you think I'm a pervo now, wait'll you read what I have to say next. For some horrific reason I can't fathom, whenever I read this little tome of illustrated depravity from the land of the rising sun, I imagine mommie dearest being voiced by June Cleaver from `Leave It To Beaver', and our split-personality-suffering mama's-boy protagonist speaking with the voice of Wally (same show). Now, THAT'S sick!

A very funny erotic manga!.......2000-10-06
This is a story about a student and his strange family... That's the start for erotic and comical happenings!
Book Description
The vast majority of screenplay and writing books focus on story development and have little to say about the initial concept that generated the piece. Developing Story Ideas offers writers a spectrum of resources and a structure of writing practice so that anyone can quickly and reliably generate a wide variety of stories in a broad range of forms. It first shows you how to observe situations, acts, and themes-and use these observations as the basis for storytelling. Exercises and projects help you draw an artistic self-profile to summarize what you most need to investigate in your creative work.
Micahel Rabiger, a renowned teacher, author, educator, and mentor, proves we all have the inner resources and life experiences to be creative. He guides aspiring writers step by step to come up with quality story ideas in a broad range of forms: a screenplay, short story, documentary, or play.
* Feeling stuck? Learn to quickly and reliably generate creative ideas for stories, scripts, and more

A basic textbook for beginner groups.......2007-07-19
With the 2nd edition, the author continues to claim that you could use this book by yourself. But nearly every exercise throughout the book requires a classroom of people or at least a writing partner, and they're not adaptable for working alone (despite the author's insistence).
Although I think some reviewers were a little harsh, they're also correct about the basic substance. The book is really a broad answer to the question "Where do you get your ideas?" Other writing books, including screenwriting ones, answer "Where do you get your ideas" in a chapter or two, so a whole book on this - even with all its short chapters - feels repetitive.
It appears that the exercises are where the author most relies on clarifying and expanding his points, rather than within the text that precedes them, so a writer working alone is out of luck. I know I keep coming back to this, but the group-dependent techniques also may not benefit new writers once they're out on their own. Personally, most writers I've known do work alone. They find their ideas on their own and they develop those ideas and write on their own, so these methods may be counterproductive for how the writing life usually works.
On the positive side, I liked his CLOSAT idea: labeling notes in your writer's notebook with Character, Location, Object (think "props"), Situation, Act (deed or action), and Theme for easy reference, and I'll likely go back through mine and do just that for my current project. Otherwise, I've attempted to make use of both editions and just can't.
Are you in kindergarden? .......2007-05-20
This book seems written for people who has not finished kindergarden. It has no substance and nothing of real interest for real writers. He does mention some important topics... but don't explain further... You can find that info much better developed in other books.
When I was reading it I was desperately searching for info on how to develop story ideas. Really, the subject -story ideas- is one of the most important subjects. It turns out that it is also one of the most difficult subjects in story telling and I've seen very few authors really understand how you create a story.
I read this book once and have not touched it since.
If you are a complete amateur or just want to write stories for yourself or for your family... then may be you could make use of it.
Do you want a summary of the info in the book? Here it is:
-Writers with the skills to write story ideas will be in great demand.
-Search inside your soul, in your memory for those moments that were lifechanging, for those feelings you don't like or the ones you liked the most, and for those people who influenced you the most... Then use those ideas and themes to develop your story ideas.
-Not enough? Then search in magazines for pictures that might inspire you...
You get the idea.
Uninspiring.......2006-10-18
This book was not at all helpful to me. It contained no new information or insights.
For Type A personalities with no love for story telling.......2006-07-31
This book is a textbook and it feels like one from beginning to end. "Pedantic" is a gross understatement. The exercises are useful but I think a budding writer might find this program more harmful than helpful, in it's desire to make sure you're always following his rules. In the end his approach might get you some ideas.. but not before it sucks all the fun out of the creative process.
If, on the other hand, you are a type A personality who really wants a rigid set of rules so you can feel secure in tackling something creative, maybe this will work for you. But my impression is that the aim of the book is to make storytelling so complicated and boring that he wants you to give up writing by the time you finish reading it. I'm a writer who buys all these books as way of refreshing my process and finding new inspiration. "Inspiring" this book is not.
Finally..........2005-12-02
I have a shelf full of books on scriptwriting, directing, and other general movie making topics. However, the one thing that has held me back on my first short film was the lack of story. Rather - the lack of a GOOD story. I was very happy to stumble across this book. Finally someone has written not about putting your idea on paper, but GETTING the idea in the first place ("priming the pump", as the book says). You not only read the principles, but are encouraged to apply them with the many hands-on exercises presented throughout.
I believe this book is definitely a worthwhile read for anyone experiencing writer's block.
Book Description
The music of Django Reinhardt is as important today as it has ever been. Blending jazz and gypsy influences, his exuberant solos and incisive rhythm playing have fascinated - and tantalized - guitarists for half a century. In this book, leading jazz writer Dave Gelly considers Django's life and recordings and explains exactly why he sounded the way he did. Meanwhile, guitarist and teacher Rod Fogg shows you how you can achieve that sound yourself, with the help of detailed transcriptions of six of Django's most celebrated and exciting numbers. Includes CD wth all six numbers accurately recorded from the transcriptions for you to follow along.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite Django Book.......2005-12-01
I loved this book, and e-mailed Rod Fogg to tell him so and how much I hope he'll do another volume. Finally, an accurate transcription of the version of 'Honeysuckle Rose' I've know by heart from listening to the record hundreds of times for so many years, with music and tab. Plus, more great tunes not in all the other books and a great bio and photo section as well...even a CD with the author's performances to get by on until you can get the original Django recordings of the tunes you want to study. Plus these tunes are all accessible and playable- All this makes this my favorite Django book. The only other one that's come close for me is the 'Definitive Collection'.
A good bio, and great transcriptions, but little else........2005-10-13
I used the 3 glowing reviews on this product to make my decision in purchasing it. Before I gripe, I'll try to find some nice things to say. I was very impressed with the production quality of the book and the detailed information in the biography section. The transcriptions were note-for-note pretty good. The tab's a little off from video recordings of Django playing these same tunes, but the notes are right.
That's about where it ends, though. The recording, while technically a decent recording, offers no insight to Django's phrasing or timing of the notes. There are entire passages where it felt like Rod was just playing the notes and nothing more. Other times, notes were missed, played sloppily or not picked up by the mic, leading to a sloppy, unrehearsed sound. There's an entire passage in the Minor Swing recording where Rod plays the most boring note-for-note reiteration of his transcription despite Django's clear swing rhythm and sliding techniques on the same passage in the recording it was transcribed from.
Overall, this is a great book to get as a bio, and a pretty good one for the transcriptions. However, don't try to learn from the CD, because Django would probably be rolling over in his grave. Learn from the master himself, and those that came after him (Fapy Lafertin, The Rosenberg Trio, etc.). They are the real deal, and they will play it right. Copy them, not Rod.
Django Reinhardt : Know the Man, Play the Music .......2005-08-22
Whether you're a guitar player or just an avid listener of Gypsy Jazz or simply just interested in Django Reinhardt, this book is a wonderful piece of work.
It is broken into two parts. The first part is a detailed biography of Django, containing about every factoid of his life you might ever want to know. There is great insight into the development of his music and his particular style. I found it to be well written and fascinating. It reads easily.
The second part is an analysis of several of his best-known works, written out in tablature and performed for you on the included CD. I haven't yet delved into this part, but I can see it's laid out well. I love owning this book.
It is the kind of book that would make one of those great and thoughtful gifts for the aspiring Gypsy Jazz guitarist or the person interested in Reinhardt's life story.
Not academic, but still a great book........2005-05-29
The two parts to this book work well together and it's great to see a bio/technique book about such a unique musician. There are no source notes or anything from the bio section but it is an interesting read. I really like the fact that the book is spiral bound, which is great for keeping it open on the music stand. I've only started working on learning the tunes and I've already found an editing oddity in the tablature for "Djangology" but nothing serious. The music is difficult though. I'm a professional musician and guitar teacher and this stuff is a challenge but well worth it if you really want a great introduction to Django's style and technique. The acoompanying CD is recorded well and is a good working tool for practicing. I still prefer listening to the original recordings for subtle nuances and phrasing but it's still good.
Excellence!.......2005-04-04
This is an excellent introduction to and summary of Django's life and music. I confess I have a hard time listening to Django's original recordings, because of the inferior recording quality, the scatching, hissing, etc. The CD accompanying this book is worth the price of admission alone. I listen to it over and over. Rod Fogg's clean recordings breathed new life into this style of music for me. I highly recommend it.

Ouch! For Geniuses Only.......2007-03-09
Too hard - is sitting in my bookcase, all by its lonesome. I am intrigued by this and many other puzzle books that ask a lot of stuff that is challenging, but isn't even in a crossword dictionary. Steer clear of this if you like easy to medium puzzles. I cannot respond to crossword questions asking the fifteenth letter of the Egyptian alphabet, or an easy use for rennet in five letters or less. Guess I am too dumb...
crossword puzzle puzzle.......2006-08-18
This is the weirdest crossword book I have ever seen. It is not a regular crossword or a cryptic crossword book. It took my husband 2 hours to complete about a quarter of one crossword. It was a total waste of money for me
Real Posers!.......2006-03-09
This crossword collection is one of the best I have tried. I have been doing crosswords for so many years that it is hard to find ones that are challenging and fun. This one does it for me, plus the perforated pages make it much easier to work them. I went on a trip to California from the Midwest, usually a really tiring trip and the puzzle book made the trip go by much faster.
Simon schuster crosswords #12.......2005-08-04
The puzzles are just about the right degree of difficulty. I am able to do them while watching a baseball game with the sound muted.

Greatest Stooge book EVER.......2007-07-17
This book is a Stooge fan's dream come true. I saw a reviewer say this book is cluttered and unuseable. Bull. Then again, he stated the Marx Brothers Encyclopedia is easier to use. I own that book and its more cluttered then this book. This book has everything in a nice, neat order. I own two copies of the book, after one fell apart. I emailed the author a back when I first bought the book and he is a very kind man. We had many discussions about our love for the Stooges. I highly recommend this book to Stooge fans. No Stooge book will probably ever compare to this one.
A STOOGES FAN DREAM COME TRUE.......2002-04-06
This book has everything you need to know about The Stooges.
It is well organized and easy to navigate. The detail of the classic episodes is worth the price alone. I highly recommend this book.
A Rehash of Lines and Names. Not Much Here........2002-02-12
I completely agree with other reviewers: that all one had to do is watch the Stooges shorts and write down the funny lines and names and voila you have Three Stooges Encyclopedia.
I give it two stars just because the section on supporting actors is interesting. Otherwise the rest is just a rehash of lines and names. The bios are even disappointing, it has stuff like, "We all want to be Curly."
I would advise to look elsewhere if you want a book on THE THREE STOOGES.
Very funny and helpful........2002-02-08
Not sure what the sign of someone's door said in MONKEY BUSINESSMEN? You'll find it in THE THREE STOOGES ENCYCLOPEDIA. This has some of the Stooges most famous quotes, songs, signs and so much more. You should buy this. This is the perfect addition to your Three Stooges collection.
The Official Three Stooges Encyclopedia.......2001-01-18
Informative, entertaining and insightful. A very original presentation of the most original comedy team ever. Readers are given new insight into each Stooge and a sense of where their genius originated. Especially interesting are the well written accounts of their personal idiosyncrasies as well as their relationships with each other. Time flies when reading this.
