It was very helpful, I hope that I get to experience these locations.
Book Description
Updated and expanded, this widely praised directory lists more than eighty retreats available to visual and performing artists, composers, and writers. Each entry includes complete information on contacting the community, the art disciplines it serves, facilities, housing, meals, season and length of residency, number of artists accommodated, admission deadlines and fees, the selection process, stipends and expenses, duties, programs, institutional history and mission statement, and a list of well-known artists who have been in residence. Wide-ranging disciplines include painting, design, sculpture, ceramics, dance, drama, writing, and other arts/crafts/humanities programs.

Invaluable Resource to Artists in All Media.......2003-10-08
I, too, just got back from a two-week residency at Norcroft Women Writers Retreat in Minnesota. We passed this book around as well, scribbling addresses in our notebooks. The experience at Norcroft was so special, we wanted more opportunities. This book opened the door for us. Browsing other residencies was a joy. I am planning on buying my own copy.
Useful resource for creating an artist's community.......2001-02-06
I bought this book as a resource for ideas on what we might need to do in Waukegan, Illinois to create an artists community here. It seems clear that building around the arts is the most organic way to rebuild our downtown and lakefront area. As such, we are looking for ways to create new gallery and studio space, foster live/work space creation and even establish the City as a destination for artist colonies and retreats. Obviously, we don't need to reinvent the wheel. The best way to learn some of the things we could do is to study what other communities have done. This book has served that end very well. I plan to visit some of the communities and residences outlined in this book to learn even more of what could be duplicated here in Waukegan. Make no mistake, the book is not intended to be a "how to" book for creating an artists community, but by describing what various communities offer it serves that purpose aptly.
Important reference for considering art community residency........2000-05-09
This edition has been revised and updated to include nearly eighty residences in the U.S., including complete descriptions on each community from residency lengths and admission deadlines and fees to programs offered. Histories of the programs complete the overviews which will prove important for any considering an art community residency.

A Resident Responds.......2000-05-05
I'm just back from Johnson VT, The Vermont Studio Center, where artist residents were eagerly passing this book from table to table at meals. It appears to be a great time-saving source as applying for grants and residencies can be a full time job. VSC was accurately described so I'm hopeful that the other listings prove to be well researched. I'm listing 4 stars as I've just added this book to my shopping list, it may very well be a 5 star reference guide for artists.

Shopping in Paris has never been better...........2002-01-22
I am consultant in the Fashion industry in NYC and I help to manage a Paris-based fashion trade show here in NY so I need to stay up to date on what is happening in Paris and the rest of Europe in terms of design and the retail market. This comprehensive, colorfully-written guide made Paris come alive for me and it gave me a desire to go to Paris just to peek in store windows and shop! A must-have guide for an upcoming trip to Paris, or just to have a good, cleverly-written, witty, right-on-the-mark read!
Where to Wear Paris...a travel necessity.......2001-12-09
This is an incredible collection of accurate and concisely written comments on places to shop and enjoy the Parisian experience. The author pulls no punches(one store is described as "having the cloying odor of a freshly cleaned toilet"), and gives first-hand information on each store, cleverly written in the style of an American Francophile. An excellent series of maps and category indexes, and a size that begs to be carried, add to the value of this excellent reference source.

I just didn't use it enough.......2005-05-01
If your trip to London is purely about shopping, then I would suggest this book. There is sooo much shopping in London, it can get boggling. However, I was there 8 days and that was not even enough time to see the sights I wanted to see, let alone shop. I did minimal shopping while in London because I was just so tired and my feet hurt so bad. I did flip through this book for Camden Town Markets and it had some info (very little) on that. This book is laid out more for if you know the store you want it will tell you where to find it. There is also a smaller section orgainzed by areas of London and what shops you can find there. There are no maps in this book so you'll need your own map if you are not familiar with the area. It also had very small sections on places to eat within the various shopping places. The size is not too large, but not tiny. You can carry it with you but in a larger size purse or bag. I would suggest foregoing this book if the main purpose of your London trip is NOT shopping. Otherwise, go for it!
A fashionista's must-have!.......2001-12-14
If you love shopping, or if you know someone who does, get this book. It's a great little guide to all THE best shops in London, from designer boutiques, to outlets, department stores, through to groovy little thrift markets.
This has certainly made my retail-therapy sessions a lot easier! The best part is that you can look up a street in the index, and find out all the shops on that street. SUCH a good idea. I looked up King's Road, and found I could buy everything there from a wedding-dress to a used biker jacket. Now, when I marry a Hell's Angel, I'm all set.
It takes all the legwork out of shopping. And the reviews are smart, wittily written, and tell you everything you need to know.
Now you need never be intimidated by snooty shop assistants ever again. When they say bitchy things to you, like, "Does madam need a size larger? Only we don't seem to stock one. Maybe two sewn together?" you can come STRAIGHT back with something like, "This is your third outlet, isn't it? Hmmm. I wonder why they didn't choose you to run the bigger branch..."
A small victory, but it matters.
I've never been prompted to write a review before, but this is such a cool little book. If this doesn't help you look like a supermodel - you need your reading-glasses fixed. (And this book will tell you where to do that, too.)
You can get guides to other shopping paradises, too - from New York, San Fran and Paris. I daren't even look, or I know I'll be blowing my shopping money on plane tickets.
Genius.

Great little book to get ypu around LV.......2006-08-01
This is a great little book to get you around LA if you are a shopaholic and even if you are not. It inludes even the most obscure shops and has very honest critiques and good directions - plus lots more!
Top Notch :-).......2006-01-02
This is the second book of theirs that I've bought. They are great because they are up to date, and so helpful. With each store, it has the address, phone number, opening hours and everything else about it that can be of use. They give good descriptions of what the store carrys and a tid bit of info about the owners etc. At the back of the book there is a few restaurant picks as well. Another great thing about this book is that it caters to anyone of any financial status. There are high end stores and stores geared to people with a budget in mind. The only possible bonus they could maybe include next issue would be a few photos here and there, but really, in general, this guide is great for helping you choose the best spots to go to and you can narrow down what is and what isn't of interest to you. Although I know Los Angeles very well, there are a few stores in here that I may not otherwise have known about and for that, I'm happy to buy a copy every couple of years or so.
Book Description
The first ever American Dirty Pair comic is finally back in print, just in time for its 10th Anniversary! Fans have long been clamoring for Adam Warren and Toren Smith`s initial adventure of the Lovely Angels. Featuring all the explosions, accidents, and insults you`ve come to know and love from our dazzling, inept, scantily clad heroines. Also features the hard-to-find short story previously only available in Dark Horse`s San Diego ComiCon Comics.
Customer Reviews:
Get down and DIRTY!.......2001-10-11
Adam Warren's first DIRTY PAIR comic probably stuck to the way the Lovely Angels were originally concieved based on the novels of Haruka Takachiho. Up until now there has never been a DP manga, and still isn't. This is an American comic book mini-series done by Dark Horse Comics. Actually, this story was first printed by the now defunct Eternity Comics. It was available in graphic novel format before, but this time with a special back-up comic feature with Kei having a simulated fantasy about killing Yuri. In the main story, Kei and Yuri have to protect a genetics expert who's rival has been after him for years and planted his body inside a small rodent. After busting into the bad guy's compound and rescuing him, they help him get a new robotic body while then trying to retrieve his stolen tissue samples so he can clone a new body for himself. This one was alot like the way the Dirty Pair were portrayed back in their old anime series. BIOHAZARD is also one of the only ones of Warren's version that you'll ever see either the Pair's assistant Muhgi who in this one looks more like a large panther than a grizzly bear, and its about the only one that Yuri uses her special "Bloody Card" weapon. It's alot of fun, but they only keep getting better from here on in!
Action! Adventure! Romance! Other Explicatives!.......2000-04-06
This, the long-awaited reprint of the first American "Dirty Pair" mini-series from 1988 chronicles the adventures of Kei and Yuri, better known as the "Dirty Pair," on the planet Pacifica. Sent there to retake the genetic profile and memory pattern of a recently deceased scientist from his enemies, Kei and Yuri get more than they barganed for when they become involved in a battle between rival illegal biotech weapon manufacturers. Of course, the "Dirty Pair" plus viral weaponry can only equal disaster...
The artwork is primitive compared to the other entries in the series, this being Adam Warren's first professional work, but glimmers of the great comic artist to come can be seen throughout. Besides, bad Warren art is still good art by most standards.
However, the fun story makes "Biohazards" worth your time. Among other insanity, it includes: a truly bizarre romance between Kei and a scientist who happens to be in the body of a genetically engineered warbeast, an extraordinarily polite killer robot, and a bioagent that turns its victims into crazed berzerkers whose entire vocabulary consists of the words "KILL," "HA," "RRRRAAAAARRRR," and "DIE!"
And as a bonus, the VERY difficult to find 1994 "Dirty Pair" short story "I Honestly Hate You" is included in the package.
Recommended, but even though it is the first series, a new reader should start with one of the better "Dirty Pair" adventures published later, so as not to be dissuaded.
Book Description
Movie stars do it better, or so it seems. Sex on the silver screen unfolds in such a perfect way and we get sucked in. Whether we want to admit it or not, much of our sexual behavior has been learned from the movies.
From Joe Bob Briggs comes Profoundly Erotic, a collection of essays on sex in film. This guide explores the most seminal films―from cult classics to Hollywood blockbusters―that both shaped and reflected America’s changing mores and codes about sex. Briggs, who has been called the Leonard Maltin of cult movies, makes good on his reputation as an off-kilter and daring movie guru in this revealing look at filmed fornication.
Profoundly Erotic follows Joe Bob’s popular Profoundly Disturbing. Now Joe Bob takes on the key films that turn us on, such as It Happened One Night (1938), Lolita (1962), Belle de Jour (1967), and sex, lies, and videotape (1989). Illustrated with lurid stills and posters, the book strips down the hottest screen moments in history with the bodies we adore, from Rudolf Valentino and Mae West to Brigitte Bardot and Sharon Stone. In addition to the ten main movies, the book features a hundred more capsule reviews in “For Further Frisson” sidebars.
Praise for Profoundly Disturbing:
“A valuable and entertaining survey of movies that broke taboos.”
―Leonard Maltin
“The book merits attention from fans tired of high-minded essays about classics such as Citizen Kane, and explains why crass, tasteless pictures often make more impact than those released with the stamp of respectability.”
―Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
The best work yet from one of our finest writers on film!.......2006-03-23
This is quite simply the most insightful and entertaining book on film since Jonathan Rosenbaum's MOVIE WARS. Underneath the surface of Briggs's "drive-in critic" persona lurks one of our most thoughtful, knowledgeable commentators on the cinema, and PROFOUNDLY EROTIC is his best book to date. Each chapter is a masterful combination of historical context, thematic analysis, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes. The writing is entertaining and accessible enough for the casual fan but thorough enough for the film scholar--I thought I knew everything there was to know about some of these films, but I was wrong. There's an abundance of great material here on both the cinema and our cultural attitudes toward sex. This book is a masterpiece.
The drive-in movie King in bed.......2005-12-06
This is an excellent book- scholarly and exciting to read at the same time! I was enchanted by each section, after each movie I wanted to continue but had to stop and digest, even in one case playing a DVD of one of the movies before I could go on. It's the kind of book that made me call my friends and say- "Hey! Did you know...?"
Highly recommended, a great companion to Brigg's other books and "The Stewardess is Flying the Plane" by Ron Hogan.

Complete guide for musical classrooms.......2002-01-30
This is an exceptional guide for teachers and parents
alike. Well written, filled with creative exercises
and handy resources. Brings color to any environment!
A dream tool for teachers and parents!.......2001-07-11
As both a parent and an educator I find this simple to read, highly accessible tool is a "must read" for all of us whose primary emphasis is to raise children to be happy, responsible individuals. Sections on developing positive self-esteem, dealing with hyperactive children and developing creativity are among the best.
A dream tool!
Nurturing for parents.......2000-12-30
I bought this highly recommended book to assist me with the many practical ideas that all caregivers crave. The book has easily surpassed my expectations and lived up to all the high praise and accolades from my friends. As a mother who also home schools two children, however, this book is a rich source of hands-on activities as well as inspiration for enriching family bonds. For parents-or nursery home workers-in search of very effective solutions for nap-time, or sleepy-time resources Dr. Ortiz's charming CDs: "It's Sleepy Time!" (for younger children), or "Daydreams to Dreams" (for older children)are HIGHLY recommended!!
A "Brain-Gym" Soundtrack.......2000-08-02
This book is an excellent resource for both parents and educators who deal with both mainstream and challenged populations. For those of us interested in gaining from the benefits of the latest brain research, or "brain-compatible strategies," without having to sort through the theoretical concepts or scientific research that often make these books cumbersome this book is the answer. The author--a clinical psychologist with actual experience in these matters--shares with us his years of research and professional experience in a very handy, ready to use volume that provides hundreds of fun, useful, hands-on exercises. Each chapter also thoughtfully provides dozens of musical suggestions based on songs that our kids actually listen to and recognize. The amount of research that must have gone into this book boggles the mind. This is an offering from someone who not only KNOWS children, but also loves and cherishes them. If you are fortunate enough to attend one of Dr. Ortiz's workshops on this topic you will be further enriched and enchanted by his charm, knowledge and humor. Mindy Mother of two, educator
Highly Recommended.......2000-07-05
As both an educator serving hundreds of children over the past 12 years, and a mother of three I have found this sensational, practical book a wonderful resource. Parents, teachers and caregivers will find in this well organized, clearly written book a wealth of information for situations that all of us who nurture children encounter throughout our daily interactions. A true, sensitive delight filled with hundreds of user friendly exercises, fresh ideas and insights into how the world sounds to children today. Helen Shaw, secondary school teacher

Customer Reviews:
The More I Read It, The More I Like It!.......2007-09-14
When I bought this book several months ago, I read it
and didn't like it much. It seemed to be too bombastic,
with large, bold fonts and other unorthodox styles.
Serious blackjack books should be more scholarly.
After reading a handful of other BJ books, I returned
to Blackjack Bluebook to find some information, and
ended up reading it again. Gee, this isn't a bad book.
Some of this information is pretty good, and up-to-date.
Then while on vacation a couple weeks ago, I took along
a half-dozen BJ books to review, so I could pick a counting
strategy to learn. And Blackjack Bluebook again came in
very handy. Actually, Mr. Renzey's Mentor count is one of
the few counts on my short list to learn.
The best part of this book is that it starts off with the
very basic strategy(don't all BJ books?) and progresses
through easy, moderate, skilled and on to a professional
count. So you can choose how much you want to learn about
BJ, and pick the best method for you to challenge the casinos.
Let's face it, the casinos don't give money away. You have
to earn it. And, Blackjack Bluebook shows you the path to
profitable BJ play.
Best Blackjack Book I've Read...........2007-05-24
I enjoy playing Blackjack for entertainment value as well as the chance to make a little cash. After mastering basic strategy, most experts leave you with card counting as the only way to further your game. I'm not a professional gambler, and have no inclination to become one. I've tried counting, and for me, it detracts from the enjoyment of playing the game.
Renzey offers solid, statistically valid options to improve a player's chances at the tables, and he does so at different levels of "committment" by the player. You can choose how much time you want to invest in study and practice, but even the simplest level helps to turn the odds toward your favor. Renzey's more advanced options begin to delve into the card counting realm, but are significantly easier and faster to learn. I find I can still enjoy the "play" as well as the "results."
Hands down, the best Blackjack book I've ever read.
how to play.......2007-04-11
I love the way that this book breaks down strategy for the casual player all the way up to professional play and it explains it in a progressive manner so that one can see what level they are playing at in a clearly defined manner. I also found the book to be a quick read making it accessible to quickly finding what information you were looking for on a need to know basis.
Outstanding BJ Book.......2007-03-19
I've read several books on blackjack and this is by far the best. I'm not one to take the time to write a review, but I am so overwhelmed with this book that I had to take a few moments to share my thoughts. Most of us already know the basics, but Renzy takes the reader into a deck of cards in an easy to understand view from the inside out. I learned more in one reading of his book than I have in five years of playing blackjack. Myths were exposed and wrong plays were corrected. I've had to unlearn several bad habits after reading this book. Thanks Fred Renzey!!!
Renzey is the Real Deal.......2007-03-01
I've known Fred for many years and I can testify that this is a man who understands blackjack inside and out. He is a top notch player and his book is a must read for players interested in becoming more advanced in their knowledge. Whether you use his various count systems is not as important as understanding the proper approach to becoming an advantage player at this game - and Fred is an astute, intelligent advantage player. You cannot have too much knowledge at this game and a wealth of good reading experiences is good for you and bad for the casinos. Enjoy!
