The Popular Front, a momentous groundswell of social activism during the Great Depression, was marked by activism among creative artists of all types that called attention to both the ends and the means of the production of art. Later historians would dismiss the socialist and communist elements of this cultural movement as minor sidelines of little if any significance. But, writes historian Michael Denning, "just as the radical movements of abolition, utopian socialism, and women's rights sparked the antebellum American Renaissance, so the communisms of the depression triggered a deep and lasting transformation of American modernism and mass culture, what I will call the laboring of American culture."
Although the early portions of the book, which establish the historical and social contexts of the Popular Front, are interesting, readers may likely find most fascinating the later chapters on some of the artists who took part in the movement, including Billie Holiday, who first began singing "Strange Fruit" at a left-wing cabaret, Duke Ellington, and John Dos Passos. His essay on the antifascist crusading of Orson Welles--"the American Brecht, the single most important Popular Front artist in theater, radio, and film"--is particularly insightful. Like Ann Douglas's Terrible Honesty, The Cultural Front is a panoramic history that brings vibrancy and passion to the telling of American culture. --Ron Hogan

Excelente.......2007-01-09
Trenchant analysis of the leftist movement between the wars........1999-09-03
Denning's examination of the leftist, socialist, proletarian, avant-garde,CIO amalgamation in the era between the wars is an extremely informative analysis of the labor-based reaction to post-World War I's economic, political and social, development. Derailing the myth that much of the movement was communist based or inspired, Denning instead argues that the uniting of a variety of movements in the arts, politics, intellectual circles, and mass media illustrated the country's increasing interest in redefining the American dream as it applied to the lower and middle classes. His trenchant analysis is bolstered by a hostof references and examples, unearthing mounds of literary, artistic, governmental and social works that--though forgotten today--were hallmarks of the era. Ultimately, Denning is able to explain how America's shift to the left eventually gave way to a dialectic shift back to the right after World War II as the country's interest in promoting business and mass production overrode its desire to bring civil and economic liberties to all. I have yet to read any book that as thoroughly and convincingly documents this time period's absorption with mass culture.

cool.......2006-08-28
this book is useful to those starting out in modeling. if you already have a contract i wouldnt reccomend it so much, but it has useful tips throughout, and anecdotes from real life models
Incredible Book!.......2005-08-20
A must have for anyone who is wanting to become a model. This book offers insight information that is both vital and informative. The authors, Eric Bean and Jenni Bidner illustrate this book with fantastic photographs and beautifully written compositions of what should be expected by models and what is expected of them. I absolutely love this book and recommend that anyone who is even faintly interested in the subject manner should read this book. It is truely a fascinating read.
All the basics of what it takes to become a model.......2005-06-09
It's fitting that art and crafts book publisher Lark Books should then move to a book on photographic modeling, Complete Guide For Models: Inside Advice From Industry Pros: it's a logical transition and offers the power of an art book publisher paired with the expertise of a fashion photographer and fashion editor. Models will learn all the basics of what it takes to become a model for the artist; from posing for commercial print ads to special opportunities for men, women and child models. Complete Guide For Models could have easily been featured in our 'Business and Careers' section, but is profiled here so artists and art library holdings will catch sight of it: it's an important, recommended instructional guide for the reference collections of artschool, artists and sculptors.
I Loved the interview with Supermodel, Carmen Dell'Orefice........2005-06-03
It was really informative hearing from a model who has modeled for 50+ years. I recently saw Carmen Dell'Orefice in a runway show in NYC, and she looks great. Great interview, great photos.
I learned alot from this book.......2005-05-22
I live in a small town in California, and i want to be a model. I always dreamed of going to NYC and being a runway model. I asked a few of the agencies in nearby towns, but they didnt know much about NYC. I got this book, and it answered alot of questions i had about modeling. The modeling schools near me charged alot of money, to take classes, but i learned just as much from this book. I can't wait to go to NYC now.

Customer Reviews:
Better than his other books..........2007-09-16
This book is excellent if you want to learn everything about painitng. It does not really cover drawing technique, be forewarned. This is his best book, do not buy "art class" or the "artist's color manual" if you chose to buy this book. Basically, he's complied both books into one.
This book really does cover all materials:
-paper and it's practical uses in concerns to specific mediums
-brushes and their practical uses in concerns to mediums
-Mediums: oil, gouche, egg tempra, watercolor, acrylic, chroma, pastels, charcol, conte crayon, ink (both traditional and modern), etc...
-Mixing media [not to be confused w/color mediums]: linseed oil, turpentine, acrylic mediums (matte, gel, etc.), watercolor mediums, etc...
It does have the same sections in "Art Class" like "where do I start?" etc. It takes you through starting from still life up to portraiture and beyond in this book. It has an additional area of subject matter which is about imagined subject matter.
Overall, it's an excellent reference book, contains good advice on how to go about starting a new medium, and allows for creativity in using mediums by explaining how they work, advantages & disadvantages, starter pallet colors, and permanance.
I would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't claimed to be a drawing technique book...you need a foundation in drawing before attempting this book.
Aptly named Complete ...........2007-04-11
This book covers just about everything, but is more informative on mediums other than oil painting. But it does give helpful tips that I had used previously, without realizing it was a standard technique used by fellow artists, but now I see why I've used them! For somebody that wants to do everything from the ground up, including making their own oil paint, then this is the book to own! Provides more instructional guidance than most other books I've seen/bought. Better artist's examples and more professional results with more advanced instructions than most other publications.
A guide to the many new art materials on the market.......2006-04-27
If you're an artist seeking the basics of how to set up a studio and use professional methods in a range of media, THE NEW ARTIST'S MANUAL: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO PAINTING AND DRAWING MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES is for you. There are so many new materials on the market today that there's an ever-present need for a comprehensive coverage of them: THE NEW ARTIST'S MANUAL provides such depth in surveying paper and paint choices, pros and cons of controlling output under different conditions, experimenting with materials and textures, and much more. An outstanding guide aspiring artists will want to look it - and it's packed with color examples on every page.
Great Book, Lousy Binding.......2006-01-13
This is truly a useful and helpful book in explaining not just techniques, but materials: their pros, cons, and inherent challenges in use. But the binding should be much better. Chronicle Books has a history of putting out decent books with cheap and/or non-durable binding, which does not hold up well with repeated use. The spine cracks easily and then you have to be careful from then on to make certain that sections don't become loose. This is not good for a book designed for repeated reference and study. I would have given the book five stars, but for this serious flaw that Chronicle Books has.

Sensibly eschewing any attempt to emulate the inspired lunacy of Monty Python's Flying Circus, this excellent oral history offers instead a straightforward but fascinating peek behind the scenes. Extensive interviews with the team of madmen who created the legendary British television series and four feature films (except Graham Chapman, who died in 1989) give a vivid sense of the dynamic interplay of personalities that revolutionized contemporary comedy, disdaining punch lines and blackout skits in favor of something much weirder and more free-form. The writing duo of Cambridge grads Chapman and John Cleese favored confrontational, deliberately shocking pieces like the infamous Undertaker sketch ("I think we've got an eater!"). Oxford alums Terry Jones and Michael Palin took a more surreal approach to writing ("Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition"). And Eric Idle, who preferred to write alone, was the cheeky one ("nudge, nudge") as well as a respected sounding board for others' ideas. Terry Gilliam, the sole American, provided the wacky animation that gave the show its visual style. It was, as Gilliam remarks, "this amazing chemical balance... I don't think you could invent a group that would work better." All the Pythons are frank about personal and creative differences, making this a thoughtful assessment rather than a hagiography. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Monty Python, the genius comedy troupe from Britain, single-handedly revolutionized sketch comedy and paved the way for everything from
Saturday Night Live to
Austin Powers. Now, in their official oral history, founding members John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin take readers behind the scenes in this no-holds-barred look at their lives and unforgettable comic works like "The Spanish Inquisition," "Dead Parrot,"
Monty Python's Life of Brian,
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (inspiration for the hit Broadway musical
Spamalot), and many, many more, with never-before-seen photos and rare interviews from friends and collaborators.

Monty Python from the inside out........2007-04-07
Everything you ever wanted to know about the phonomenon known as Monty Python is here, told by the ones who lived it. You get inside information only they could know. Everyone gets a chance to comment, or gripe as the case may be. Even though Graham Chapman is still dead he is represented through the people who knew him best. They were co-workers, cohorts, enemies at times and pals. They were (and still are) Monty Python. I love the book!!!
Monty Python Speaks.......2005-12-20
"Monty Python Speaks" is about the influential comedy sextet known as Monty Python. This book consists of intervies with the Monty Python members, excluding Graham Chapman, due to the fact that he's "bleedin' demised! He is no more! This is an ex-[Python]!" There are also interviews with Carol Cleveland, Douglas Adams, Ian McNaughton, and more, compiled similarly to "The Beatles Anthology" book.
I personally enjoyed this book. I particularly liked Terry Jones' story about one particular scene in "Life of Brian." Apparently, Mr. Jones was trying to direct the crowd of Tunisian extras to laugh at Michael Palin's Pontius Pilate's speech impediment, but to no avail. He then told the translator to tell the crowd to do what the director did. Jones then fell on his back and proceeded to laugh hysterically. Fortunately, on the first take, the extras did it perfectly. Unfortunately, they couldn't use that take, for reasons forgotten by me, so they used the second, slightly sub-par, take.
I reccomend this book to Monty Pyhton fans as well as random trivia buffs, of which, I fall into both categories. This has so many facts that you probably couldn't find elsewhere, except from the interviewees themselves. You can discover what happened behind the scenes of somme of the funniest TV shows and movies of the 70s and 80s. Why was the Undertaker sketch nearly cut? Where did the dead parrot come from? Who had to eat mud during the filming of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"? Find out here.
Python at a Glance.......2003-11-10
While this book will not reveal anything earth-shattering to the average Python fan, it is a fun and witty look at one of the most influencial comedy teams ever. As a fan of Python fan, I really enjoyed it.
The five surviving members of Python and the partner of the late Graham Chapman were interviewed on a variety of topics including the origins of Python, writing the shows, making the movies, and the disbanding of the Pythons. David Morgan also catches up with the surviving members of Monty Python at their most recent reunion in 1999. The retorts to the questions are the informative yet witty replies you would expect from these comic legends.
The book gives a solid history of Monty Python in the words of the men themselves. Readers get an excellent idea of what was going on behind the scenes. Everything is discussed including the parrot sketch.
great book.......2003-06-07
I loved this book. It is a great buy for any python fan. It obviously doesn't have any comontary by Graham Chapman, but that was the only bad part.
The Best Monty Python Book on the Market.......2003-03-04
Monty Python Speaks!
To this date, the best Monty Python resource available, it consists of interviews with the five surviving Pythons, along with some interviews with folks close to the Pythons (Graham Chapman’s partner David Sherlock, leading lady Carol Cleveland, Chapman’s friend Douglas Adams). There are interviews for the films, the TV shows, Chapman’s death, and an invaluable section about the future of Python (which looks pretty bleak.)

Music - yes , book - no.......2007-01-15
He is a master at music....but his book left we w/ what I have always thought.... arrogant, rude, self centered........If you want to really know his thought process to music, it will enlighten you....as to his personal file.... well...
Yanni- Ethnicity.......2006-09-24
This one's a must-have! The pieces are beautiful! Most of them are orchestral simplifications, but they still are fun to play! Rainmaker, For All Seasons, and Play Time are a bit tricky, and are not for beginners, but the rest are okay. Since these were not written for a solo piano, you have some leeway with the interpretation of these pieces. The only one in here I don't like is Tribal Dream, but I don't even like it on the CD. Overall, this one's worth your money.

Book Description
Everybody needs a rock -- at least that's the way this particular rock hound feels about it in presenting her own highly individualistic rules for finding just the right rock for you.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-09-30
I bought this book for use in an early childhood classroom for 3 to 5 year old children, and the children and I just love it! It's a relaxing story to use and lends itself well to a variety of themes and activities. I wish I had this one when my own children were small. They would have LOVED it!
Great for Earth Science teachers!.......2006-04-15
I teach 6th grade and one of the things we learn about is rocks. I bought this book based on the reviews, but after reading it I felt compelled to write one too. I try to get my students excited about rock collecting. This book is so simple, yet so inspiring. It begins by saying "I'm sorry for kids who only have tricycles, bicycles, horses, elephants, goldfish, three-room playhouses, fire engines, wind-up dragons and things like that - if they don't have a rock for a friend." It then goes on to list 10 simple rules for finding your rock...not just any rock. A rock that you will keep forever. The rules include where to find your rock and remember "You should choose your rock when everything is quiet. Don't let dogs bark at you or bees buzz at you." The book concedes, "Don't get a rock that is too big. You'll always be sorry. It won't fit in your right hand and it won't fit in your pocket. A rock as big as an apple is too big. A rock as big as a horse is MUCH too big." This is the perfect book to get your rock collectors started and excited about geology.
enjoyable lesson and artwork.......2004-07-02
Under the guise of giving ten rules for choosing one's "special rock", the author advises kids (and adults who read to them), to connect with nature and to act with deliberation. The line drawings are muted in color yet evocative and filled with imagination, and will be of interest to kids who have seen only traditional artwork.
Everybody Needs This Book.......2003-12-09
I bought this book for myself at Rocks and Stuff in Chelan, Washington. We visit this store on our annual vacations and are always awed and fascinatated by what we find there.
This book is a gem, telling us the importance of rocks, all the things they can be for us. More importantly than that, it tells us about our sense of self and our place in the bigger world. All that in a kid's book.
This book will be part of a gift, along with some cool rocks, for my niece, who picks up rocks wherever she goes.
Everybody Needs a Rock.......2003-03-17
This book has a very special meaning. When I look as this book it tells me that making a decision of any kind big of small takes time. It takes thought and concentration. As you are to pick a rock you have to look at it from al sides, just like you would have to in any decision you would make.
Decisions even as small as picking out a rock are important. Maybe you could apply these 10 rules that are read in the book and use them to solve everyday dilemmas or situations.
I think this book also tells us that the materialistic thing in life are no always what you need. Sometimes it takes just a rock to be your best friend. I would highly recommend this book to children who just think that toys or material possessions are what they need. There is a beautiful would of nature out there, and if you use your imagination even a rock can be your friend. ~ Kellie~
