Book Description
Dark Spring is an autobiographical coming-of-age novel that reads more like an exorcism than a memoir. In it author Unica Zurn traces the roots to her obsessions: the exotic father she idealized, the "impure" mother she detested, the masochistic fantasies and onanistic rituals which she said described "the erotic life of a little girl based on my own childhood." Dark Spring is the story of a young girl's simultaneous introduction to sexuality and mental illness, revealing a different aspect of the "mad love" so romanticized by the (predominantly male) Surrealists. Unica Zurn (1916-1970) emigrated in 1953 from her native Berlin to Paris, in order to live with the artist Hans Bellmer. There she exhibited drawings as a member of the Surrealist group, and collaborated with Bellmer on a series of notorious photographs, of her nude torso bound with string. In 1957, a fateful encounter with the poet and painter Henri Michaux led to the first of what would become a series of mental crises, some of which she documented in her writings. She committed suicide in 1970 - an act foretold in this, her last completed work.

Powerful.......2004-11-01
The ending of this book will I believe haunt me for days to come...One of the best novels I have ever read though not for all tastes. I found Zurn's writing hypnotic and mystifying. A dark and honest german tale of innocence tarnished, love lost, suicide, dreams, sex, violence, domestic hell all seen through the eyes of a lonely twelve year old girl. Beautiful, sad and and unfortunately prophetic - spoiler-(Unica Zurn, the author killed herself in real life). Anyone interested in psychology or stories dealing with youthful angst must read this gripping literary work of art. A masterpiece.
Incredibly Haunting Imagery.......2004-04-26
This is an incredibly vivid and haunting book by a very talented writer. As a result of her life, her work seems to not receive the recognition that it should. The writing in this book is beautiful. She deals with the fractured feminine psyche piling on surreal images that create a nightmare echo that resounds from cover to cover. Brilliant.
a sad tale well told.......2002-12-12
Unica Zurn had her problems, no doubt about it, but she was also a talented writer who had the ability to turn her pain and suffering into art. This sort of reminds me of that other gem on the same topic entitled THE BELL JAR by Sylvia Plath. I suggest you get it. Unica Zurn deserves to be read and remembered.

Enjoyable Book.......2007-05-12
With John Wayne's 100th birth date coming up I started looking for books on him that I have not read. This book is very enjoyable reading. You learn alot about the man from his fellow co-workers and friends. I would recommend this one to any one.
Celebrate the Duke's life!!!!.......2007-01-13
One of the reasons Wayne was so popular was that he symbolized everything America wanted to be; strong ,brave, loyal, savvy and honest. His character was a fighter who never backed down when he knew he was right. He was a role model to millions, his screen actions were a roadmap to manhood. That was John Wayne,Icon.
But there was another side to Wayne. He was a real man, flesh and blood, and he had real thoughts and feelings, strengths and weaknesses. He was as brave as his larger-than-life screen persona in his real life, such as in the way he faced up to cancer, and very very human. This is John Wayne, the Man.
This book does an excellent job of showing both sides of the John Wayne coin,Man and Icon. It does it with stories told by people who really knew him. After reading this book you actually feel like you've had a bull session with Duke's friends and co-workers. It's got a very amiable feel to it.
The book also reminds me of Studs Terkel's books. Studs would just turn on a tape recorder and let his subjects pour their hearts out. The author here uses a similar approach. Each story is like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle and at the end of the book you can put all the pieces together to get a clear picture of the Duke.
After I finished reading, I wished I had known him too.
GOD BLESS YOU, COUSIN HERB.......2002-10-07
I am a huge fan and relative of Herb's writings. He has a true gift for the written word and I have enjoyed all of his books. Herb, my prayers and thoughts are with you during these very trying times. I am thinking of you incessantly and the entire family prays for you daily. Godspeed.
The Duke: Remembered by his friends & colleagues........2000-09-29
Critics complain that he was a Johnny-One Note who played the same person over & over, & wasn't very good at it. I say this is Baloney.
The annecdotes & observations of the people who lived & worked with him that are found in this book show that he was able to do so much, physically, & emotionally with the characters he played.
You come away with a better sense of why you cheered, laughed, & cried under the spell of his performances. Whether you agreed or disagreed with the actions of his character, you still cared for him & cared about what happened to him
His friends, family, & co-workers loved & admired him & it shows very clearly in this wonderful book.
Sure, he drank, & smoked, & was a staunch anti-commie, but he was also a loyal, funny, kind & gentle family man who worked hard to perfect his craft & cared about his co-workers.
Read this book & understand.
Great Book on John Wayne.......1999-03-24
"Duke We're Glad We Knew You" is an exellent book. People such as Harry Carey Jr., Ben Johnson, Lee Aaker, John Wayne's stepsister, and many more write of when they knew Duke. The foreward is written by Ronald Regan who knew Wayne personally. Author, Herb Fagen. interviewed many of them personally. The book has stories about how Wayne first got started in acting, his childhood, his marriages, his movies, and his death. I have really enjoyed this book.
Book Description
This book is a hands-on investigation of the stages musicians go through as they learn to hear, read, and perform music. It draws on the latest research in music perception and cognition, music theory, and pedagogy, along with centuries of insight from music theorists, composers, and performers. The first part explores the development of music listening skills, including such broader activities as dictation and transcription, and specific abilities such as meter perception, short-term musical memory, and tonic inference. The second part then examines the skills involved in reading and performing music. It looks at such physical skills as vocal production and eye movements and at such complex integrated tasks as sight-singing transpositions and modulations. Throughout the book the author presents these skills in their musical contexts and emphasizes their roles in the general development of musicality. Aural Skills Acquisition builds important bridges between music theory, cognitive psychology, and pedagogy. It subjects ideas from music theory to the rigors of psychological testing and combines findings from the psychology of learning with ideas and methods of contemporary music theory. It will prove an invaluable guide for music teachers, music theorists, and psychologists interested in music perception and cognition.

Useful.......2007-08-24
A fine reference. Makes the subject more palatable and gives good suggestions for curriculum development.
Review.......2001-06-07
This book is extremely up to date with current research. Anyone studying music theory, aural skills pedagogy or music education must read this book. This book also builds on previous studies done by scholars important in the field of music psychology as well. Separating the chapters into easily accesible units such as melodic dictation and harmonic dictation makes references quick and easy!
Book Description
Some 250 years ago, the great Philidor wrote, "The pawns are the soul of chess." Although that statement is perhaps the most common cliche in the literature of the game, it is too often misunderstood.
Pawns are usually considered weak because of their limited range of movement. But the pawns' restricted mobility is precisely what makes them so important strategically: they form a semi-permanent structure -- often called a "pawn skeleton" -- that establishes the territorial lines of the coming battle and thus the nature of the battle itself. Understanding how pawns affect strategy is the subject of this important book. In it you will learn:
-- how to handle the characteristic pawn structure of each opening "family" and each major variation
-- how to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of pawn chains
-- when to exchange pawns in the center -- and when not to
-- how to cramp your opponent's position and what to do if your opponent cramps yours
-- how to create and exploit pawn "holes"...and much, much more, all copiously illustrated by complete games from actual play.
Customer Reviews:
What this book is about, and what it is not about.......2007-07-08
This book is not about openings! Although some discussion about openings and their relationship to "pawn structure" is necessary, the pawn structure is the subject. The moves Nf3, d4, c4, and many others can lead to the same structure. You can buy hundreds of books about openings. This book is different. In my opinion, studying opinings without understanding the concepts in this book is a waste of time.
One think I like is that Soltis does not claim that either black or white has a win from any basic structure. For each structure, he shows tactics/maneuvers for both sides. If you want to buy a book that shows that you always win if you play a certain opening, this book is not for you.
The blurb on the cover, "How to handle all characteristic pawn structures," is false. I don't think there is more than one example of Benoni formations in the book. However, the author did not write the blurb. What Soltis said was, "This book explores several of the more important pawn structures." Not all possible pawn structures. I do not think a book truly covering "all possible pawn structures" will ever exist. Soltis could have written a book four times longer, but it would cost 4 times as much, and few would buy it. I wish Soltis would write a second volume for "Pawn Structure Chess."
However, I think most chess players could study this book for years and gain very useful knowledge.
Let's go back to the coverage of Benoni formations. Suppose you like to play the Benoni, but your opponent plays Nf3 before d4. Instead of pushing his d-pawn to d5, he allows you to capture c5xd4. You are now playing the black side of the Maroczy Bind (see the sub-chapter "Maroczy Unbound" in "The open Sicilian-English" in this book). A player who understands structure, rather than one who only memorizes opening moves, has an advantage, although even an excellent positional player can fall into a tactical trap occasionallly.
This book is not specifically about isolated pawns, doubled pawns, etc., although sometimes those are covered in the context of pawn structures. You can get many books on those subjects.
If you read this book, you will inevitably find some positions that you find unclear. The first one I remember is p. 41-42, Maroczy-Chigorin 1899. The last paragraph says, "But now in the diagram White cannot play 15.nxe5 nxe5 16. without risking disaster after 16. Bb3 nf3! 17. Rad1 Bh3!
I still find this line unconvincing. I think 17 ...Bg4 is better.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Also good are Marovic's "Understanding Pawn Play in Chess" and "Dynamic Pawn Play in Chess," which go beyond Soltis on certain subjects, but have less coverage than Soltis, for example, on the closed Sicilian. Marovic's organization is logical (open center, closed center, dynamic center) but I find Soltis's organization more useful (Caro, Slav, Open Sicilian-English, etc.) more useful, from my subjective point of view. Still, the Marovic books are wonderful too.
Disappointing so far.......2007-06-11
I have just started reading the book but I am getting to more and more be surprised by the overly positive reviews. Will the book improve in future chapters? I don't know. I hate too say that I don't like Soltis as an author yet I keep buying his books for the great promises in the title. I came to realize that his books are very short on instruction and in depth analysis but very rich on positions and games. The author speaks for two lines and then shows a complete game or a long battle no matter how ill connected to what he was saying before. This is what I have seen from this book as well. As other reviewes mentioned, the author doesn't help you to get the insight. He states something and then shows an example. I guess it's up to us to do the linking. That's why so far Soltis books have been the harder and longer for me to study. To begin with I ran one of the games through Fritz (Kasparov game in the introduction), and despite the number of sheer errors the author claims and how all these errors are linked to pawn structure, the only actual error was a straight blunder that led to losing a queen and all the way along White had the advantage and good chances for counter play. I think I'll leave the book until I can have more insight by myself without the help of the author. In such a case, a game book maybe as good as that book. Let's see. I am rated around 1500 USCF.
The book is for advanced students.......2007-03-20
The book looks good but it is for advanced students
Pawn structure and long term planning!.......2006-09-19
I did hear that saying that, "pawns are the sole of chess", and "chess structure is the backbone of your position". Mr. Soltis shows you the importance of planning ahead and having the right pawn structure, or making your opponent have the wrong one - especially looking toward an endgame. Now this not a book for a beginner, who should be learning basic tactics, traps, ideas behind opening moves and basic endgames. This is a book for someone past that stage that needs to learn the more advanced idea of recognizing how to use pawns and the importance of planning ahead keeping the the pawns (the little people!!) in mind! Don't forget the "little people" would be a funny but true statement.
Interesting but definitely not for beginners.......2006-09-13
He makes some interesting points about the pawn structures resulting from various typical opening systems. However, since you probably only play one or a few of these a lot of the book may not interest you that much, also it is quite advanced and I simply couldnt make sense out of much of it. However, this book is reccomended by many people, including Jeremy Silman in his book Reasess Your Chess. Perhaps if I go over it later I can understand more--definitely not for beginners.
Book Description
Pawns are the soul of chess--and one of the aspects of the game that chess computers just don't handle well. This modern guide to pawn structures, written by an experienced grandmaster, analyzes a variety of typical formations, and explains the approaches, patterns, and techniques used by professionals in all phases of the game. The know-how gained from the sample matches presented will give any player a practical advantage on the board.

Most Important Book which Covers Pawn Sturctures.......2006-08-21
Rarely have I found a book reviewing pawn structures as they relate to actual tournament experience. Alexander Baburin has written, what has clearly been recognized already, as a classic! The ideas are developed around the typical pawn structures arising from many opening leading to the isolated queen pawn (IQP) and it's derivatives (pawn couples, hanging pawns, etc.) which occur in most openings like the Queens Gambit, Caro Kann, etc.. He develops his concepts and teaches ideas and plans with examples from very well annotated full length games from actual competition. Reading this book, is almost as good as having a private coach!
Definitely a 5 star rating for this book!!!
If you understand this work, you can crush Class players in IQP positions.......2006-02-06
The quality of Baburin's work is off the charts. This book opened my eyes to the Isolated Queen's Pawn structure, which I try to get in as many games as I possibly can because this book showed me how to demolish people with it (at my level, Class "A," and even somewhat above my level).
One could call this a "specialized" middlegame text, but because the presence of the IQP is so ubiquitous in chess, this is just an extremely important work, and one that I feel doesn't get as much attention as it deserves.
The whole book is fantastic, but Part 1 (basically, Attacking with the IQP) is absolutely exceptional. THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS, and you MUST know "basic" kingside attacking motifs to get optimal value out of it. But tournament players who go through it will have their eyes opened for sure. This book trains you to play IQP positions with calculation and general principles together! Baburin shows you the plans (even multiple plans in the same opening system) and when faced with such positions you will know almost exactly what to do.
Great book on Isolani Pawn!.......2004-09-01
If you like to learn how to handle chess positions with the isolated Queen's Pawn ("Isolani") this is the book! Baburin explains the methods to play the isolated pawn positions clearly. This book would be very beneficial for players between USCF 1700-2000. While learning about the isolated pawn positions your middle game technique will improve in general as well.
Great book but you need to be an advanced player.......2004-06-25
Please be careful with this book. Its basically a very advanced text on Isolated Pawn structures, in fact its the most advanced text on this subject in the English language. I really do not think that you would be able to read it cover to cover unless you are at least ELO 2000. Its a brilliant piece of work and I hope the author continues the series to cover passed pawns, doubled pawns etc. The only way i would advise anyone below ELO 2000 to buy this book is to use it as a game reference with your opening book. You would need to play one of the following openings Caro Kan, Queens Gambit, the Nimzo Indian defense or the French defense. It makes you realise that the Isolated pawn is a great source of strength or a fundamental weakness and occurs a lot in certain types of openings. As an advanced player you need to know how to play each side of this equation as it will often be the central issue that will decide the game.
A (redundant) review, AND correction of A.J.Goldsby I.......2004-05-02
Yes, this is a great book on the IQP. How can I add anything to the splendid reviews by Hashimm4 and A.J.Goldsby I? I can't, except to say, the book's title, "Winning Pawn Structures," is suspiciously misleading. How about something like "The Isolated Queen's Pawn: Winning Strategies"? Surely the title is a crass attempt by the publisher to increase his market of chess readers.
But my REAL complaint (with a segue back to Baburin's work) is with A.J.Goldsby's misrepresentation of Nimzowitsch's "My System", which happens too often for me to let this one go by (especially by a top 1000 reviewer who presents himself as a chess authority -- which he probably is). To quote Goldsby's review:
"This book was a major revelation to me. Having grown up under the influence of Nimzovich, I had mostly assumed that the positions containing an Isolated Queen's-Pawn, like any isolated pawn; was weak and should be avoided at all costs. (I almost never allowed myself to be saddled with an IQP, mostly as a result of what I had learned from Nimzowitsch's "My System.") This is a fallacy."
I am yet again amazed by a chess critic's misinformation regarding "My System" (while, admittedly, the later "Chess Praxis" tends to tarnish the IQP's reputation). It's as if they've never even read this classic!
In "My System," Nimzowitsch has a chapter entitled: "The isolated d-pawn and its descendants." In it he addresses both the potential weaknesses of the IQP and the inherent strengths. He refers to the IQP as "permeated with dynamic strength." He COMMANDS that the student experience "how dangerous an enemy isolani may be." He says the IQP's strength "lies in its lust to expand (advance)," and that it "protects and indeed creates the White outpost stations at e5 and c5 [noting the enemy has only one outpost, and that White's at e5 "would have a sharper effect than is ever possible to an opposing Knight on d5."]. He shows how to take advantage of the extra open file that comes with the IQP. And he even has a section entitled, "4. The isolani as a weapon of attack in the middlegame." While, yes, he fully explains how the IQP can be weak, especially in the endgame (suggesting as a countermeasure that you make a timely use of the IQP's attacking possibilities in the middlegame), the fact is that Nimzowitsch gives a FULL understanding of the IQP's advantages... as well as weaknesses.
Which brings us back to "Winning Pawn Structures." Just like Nimzowitsch, Baburin discusses both the advantages and disadvantages of the IQP. How to attack WITH it and AGAINST it. Nimzowitsch covers this topic (and that of isolated pawn couples and hanging pawns!) in about 10 pages. Very effectively, I might add.
Thus, if you already have a good grasp of positional chess, then read Baburin's great book. Otherwise, pick up a more general book on positional chess that includes, but does not dote on, the IQP....
How about this little gem: "My System"

Great Book!!!.......2004-12-29
I received this book for Christmas, and my first impression was...this is your typical geeky "Star Trekish Book" (Cause everybody know's us Whovians are better then Trekkers/Trekkies). I should add that I do own quite a few Who books.
Gotta tell you, it's really enjoyable book. Not to many books have made me laugh out loud, but hearing some of the stories in here does just that. I own almost every Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee story on VHS, plus the odd story here and there of the other Doctor's. This book makes me want to revist those tapes as I read up on each of the stories.
The title suggests a rather boring read. I've really enjoyed this book since I began reading it. I can't seem to put down.
