Amazon.com's Best of 2001
In accompaniment with the exhibition held by the National Gallery of Canada comes Gustav Klimt: Modernism in the Making. This powerhouse of a book spans the life and work of the famous Austrian painter who is well-known, even now, for his dramatic work, "The Kiss." This beautiful tome includes four chapters, by four different art historians, on the background and importance of Klimt's work, plus two sections devoted to the works in the exhibition, including a page of detailed commentary on each of the paintings.
As a student, Klimt was trained in the decorative arts. He quickly became known for his blending of both high and low art styles, a rather controversial movement at the turn of the century. His graphic shapes and colors became one of his signatures and hold his paintings together like sublime art nouveau glue. Though popular enough at the time to have been commissioned to create murals and friezes for grand buildings, Klimt did not escape public criticism for the heavy sexual content of his work. Klimt's symbolic paintings about life and death are full of images of nude women, young, old or pregnant, and couples and groups intertwined. These colorful, sensual, and elegant paintings remain fascinating symbols of fin-de-siècle Europe. --J.P. Cohen

The most remarkable artist of late-19th-century Vienna, Gustav Klimt developed a highly personal style that combines decorative pattern with a mysterious, smoldering eroticism. This beautiful volume-the most comprehensive survey in English of the life and work of this popular artist-is the catalogue of a major Klimt exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the first Klimt retrospective in North America.

Life and work.......2006-03-31
I really enjoyed the book. Biography and work are handled in a well-balanced way, and the evolution of Klimt's art is linked to his life. The book has several articles, but the sense of unity is kept. The reproductions have good quality (the standard one in these types of books), and it is easy to understand for amateurs. I think it is a recommendable book if you like symbolism and modernism, and also if you would like to have a portrait of Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century.
Beautiful -- just don't let aunt Sally find it! .......2005-12-05
Frank Whitford's biography is a more comprehensive examination of the social/cultural perspective. Other books examine Klimt's portraits of women and Klimt's landscapes in greater sophistication. The dust jacket, a tension-infused portrait of his friend and muse, "told" me this is a fair and balanced examination of his works and of his views of art. It is. Beware: some material is not be appropriate for young children -- and offensive to conservative relatives.

Must to have for screenwritewrs!.......2007-01-10
this book is very inspiring and u'll love it if u want to become a screenwriter or u are already started ur career as screenwriter.
I advise everyone who wants to write screenplay to get the book plus downloading a script from the internet to know how it looks.
This struck a chord with me unlike any of the others.......2004-01-04
Really inspiring. I was halfway through and felt the muse awaken. His e-mail address is in the back of the book. I contacted him and he was very amenable to answering questions about my script.
What a jewel!.......2002-09-29
This book is not like Field's, McKee's or any of the zillion others that take you through the basics of screenwriting. It assumes you know most of the basics and concentrates, instead, on polishing and professionalizing your script and does so with a sense of humor that's wonderfully refreshing.
I was exceedingly fortunate to have had DB serve as a consultant on one of my screenplays. He was insightful, encouraging, down-to-earth and funny as hell. His book is written in the same style he uses when consulting and teaching. It will forever have a place on my shelf near my computer and the rest of my important research/reference materials.
Thanks, DB. Hurry up and write the next one!
The Only Screenwriting Book You'll Need.......2002-09-07
After reading about every known screenwriting book that is still in print, and having gotten nothing from them but rigid formulations for hackneyed plots and tips on serving up warmed-over dialogue cliches, what a joy it was to crack open "The Screenwriter Within" and get a tour through the playful mind of Mr. D.B. Gilles. His tone is easy-going and conversational, and his ideas about structure hit you like undeniable common sense. His tone is perfect: down-to-earth and unpretentious, yet always going to bat for quality and high standards. He still believes in the power of commercial Hollywood cinema to tell inspiring and thrill-packed stories, and I must admit, his enthusiasm is contagious.
If you're serious about screenwriting---and if you intend to make any kind of a mark in the business, you had better be---then start your education with this book.
Don't buy Syd Field's book, buy this one!.......2002-07-12
When I bought this book for D.B.'s class, I was all, "Oh great, another professor making me buy his book for his class!" I figured I would read the one chapter he required us to read and then return it to the bookstore as soon as possible.
But then, after I read that one required chapter, and I decided to keep the book after all.
For another film course I was forced to buy Syd Field's book "Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting" and read it over a weekend. Even though Syd's book is a supposed "industry standard" screenwriting book, I wouldn't recommend buying it. After all, any good screenwriting professor will tell you that all screenplay books tell you basically the same thing. You only have to buy one book to learn formatting, the three-act structure, etc. I recommend D.B. Gilles' "The Screenwriter Within" because it gives you the same information you'll find anywhere else, with the added bonus of a sense of humor.
Granted, Syd Field's book is funny, but it is because his examples are outdated, and the screenplay he uses for an example is about speedboats. Syd Field is succeeding at being funny without trying, whereas D.B. is trying to be funny and succeeding. Therefore, I recommend the latter.
Book Description
Few albums in the canon of popular music have had the influence, resonance, and endurance of John Coltrane's 1965 classic A Love Supreme-a record that proved jazz was a fitting medium for spiritual exploration and for the expression of the sublime. Bringing the same fresh and engaging approach that characterized his critically acclaimed Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece, Ashley Kahn tells the story of the genesis, creation, and aftermath of this classic recording. Featuring interviews with more than one hundred musicians, producers, friends, and family members; unpublished interviews with Coltrane and bassist Jimmy Garrison; and scores of never-before-seen photographs, A Love Supreme balances biography, cultural context, and musical analysis in a passionate and revealing portrait.

One More Session For A True Expressionist.......2007-09-06
What can be said about this album?; on this book are mentioned details about this historic spiritual session that any music, jazz fan must indeed know. Read it and grow.
Great book!.......2007-02-11
"A Love Supreme" was already one of my favourite jazz record before I read this, but after having read the book, now I listen to the music in a totally different way.
I'm not a spiritual or religious person at all, but the book helped me understand what was probably going through Coltrane's mind (from a spiritual point of view) when he composed and recorded "A Love Supreme".
Homage or Adulation?.......2005-10-14
Kahn's stellar research for this volume on Coltrane's best known album, "A Love Supreme," is undermined by sloppy prose and lack of focus. Kahn does a great job showing just how powerful the album has been for generations of listeners, from Wayne Shorter to Bono. The biographical material on Coltrane is very good, but profoundly impersonal, skipping over key aspects of his life. The best part of the book is his meticulous documentation of the December 9 & 10, 1964 sessions that resulted in this album. Kahn describes the music with vivid language, and includes details about where Elvin Jones' drums were placed and how Rudy Van Gelder lit the studio to create a Jazz Club atmosphere for the performers. After that, Kahn's book loses focus. It's as if he had a 100 page manuscript, but then the folks at Penguin asked him to make it 250, and he had scratch around for any extra material he could find. His assessment of Coltrane's career post-"A Love Supreme" is very tepid, and the chapter on the legacy of the recording, especially from the vantagepoint of JOWCOL publishing, shows promise, but ultimately goes nowhere. Kahn's major problem here is that he doesn't know who his audience is. Is it for die-hard Trane-iacs, or is it for the casual listener that has "A Love Supreme" and no other Coltrane album? Some of this might not be Kahn's fault, as the content suggests this is for experts, but the formating of the book, with its wide margins and coffee-table book size, make it seem as if it's simply for show and tell in some bourgeois apartment. The book could have been better organized, more historically contextual, and filled with glossaries and footnotes for the more casual fans. Also, Kahn's lack of historical grounding makes it seem as though "A Love Supreme" was the only album released in 1965, and that jazz was the most popular music at that time, which is far from the case (just as it is today). Here, his homage to this wonderful album bleeds over into the realm of adulation. If this was a book for the "experts," it would be more critical of the album, instead of an all-out gush-fest. But Kahn's research must be commended (especially since he seems to be responsible for getting the December 10th performance of "Acknowledgment," with Davis and Shepp as added musicians, unearthed and onto the Deluxe Edition reissue of "A Love Supreme).
This book is really good!.......2005-03-31
Ashley Khan did a great job. I first picked up Coltrane's A Love Supreme, in the early 90's while a teenager, in a used section of a Parisian jazz record store, at that time i was only basicly educated about music and jazz. When i first played that album i was spiritualy moved and fell in love with it. I had no idea then of the importance of that record in Coltrane's career or in jazz in general, but the music touched my soul, and took me on a journey, which have been my (still young) life's journey and spiritual quest.
For the past 10 years i have been playing that record before evey major key events of my life... as a way to pray and meditate... i had no idea this album have been such a spiritual listening experience for other people before i started learning more about Coltrane and music. For this, Kahn's book is a very good illustration of the importance of that particular record. It is well written, have beautifull pictures and some precious informations. It contains basic elements about Coltrane's life, but reading Colrane's bio can remain a necessity. The making of a love supreme is a must read. Peace.
Loved it.......2004-02-20
Great music for those who love traditional jazz. Coltrane shows off his dexterity with the sax throughout this entire record.

Book Description
An entirely new campaign setting for the
Dungeons & Dragons® roleplaying game.
During the spring and summer of 2002, Wizards of the Coast, Inc., put out a request to the gaming community for proposals for a new
D&D game setting. 11,000 proposals and two years of development later, the Eberron Campaign Setting is the result of that search. This brand-new setting for the
Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game is an avenue for any
D&D fan to experience swashbuckling adventure and explore mysterious new territories.
Designed to introduce a new, fresh world with unlimited possibilities for exploration, the Eberron Campaign Setting includes everything needed to develop characters and run campaigns in this exciting new arena. It includes new character races, monsters, prestige classes, feats, organizations, and equipment unique to the world, and it introduces a new base class to the
D&D game. It contains substantial information on new elements of magic, including spells, domains, items, artifacts, and more. Also included are historical and cultural details of the world, along with extensive illustrations and a wealth of maps that put the setting into vivid context. This title will also include both adventure hooks and a full adventure so that players and Dungeon Masters can immediately begin enjoying everything this rich new setting has to offer.
Customer Reviews:
D & D noir.......2007-06-28
The Ebberon campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons game system brings players into a new world. This is no backwoods medieval period setting. This is technology married to magic, and twisting plots. this is a world where the "normal" rules no longer apply. I highly recomend this book for any Dungeons & Dragons fan who wants something truly new.
100% Awesome!.......2007-05-31
This is a great setting. It's very easy to get involved in Eberron, and there is just enough to play in such a vast world. The new races are very attractive and fun, and the personality of the world is very interesting. Since I play Eberron, adventures just got more fun. Of course, you don't need this material to take your players through amazing locations, jungles filled with ancient secrets and mysterious enemy lands, but this book will surly put you up to it.
Good book, but vague........2007-03-22
I run a D&D campaign set in Eberron, and of course this book is essential. It is very interesting, with a lot of good flavor material, and some decent additions to the rules (the new races are fun). One warning (this probably applies to all the Eberron source books): The backround information is very vague. Many things are hinted at, but rarely are they revealed in any detail. This is not neccesarily a bad thing. I like it because it releases me to invent whatever I want (without fear of contradiction by a player who has more time to study sourcebooks than me), and really make the setting my own. However, it is probably good to keep this in mind when you are considering buying this book.
Eberron is not The Forgotten Realms. You will not find reams of material on every obscure location and character.
The style of Eberron suits me very well, as it is quite conducive to plot oriented campaigns.
As for the book itself, it is well made and sturdy. Not a lot of typos, the illustrations are pretty good, better than a lot of Wizards books, but still a little inconsistent.
Incredible Source Book!.......2007-03-08
Possibly the most imaginative Campaign Settings in the history. There's so much detail, yet it's open-ended enough for literally anyone who's new to the role of DM to put something together. Awesome work by Keith Baker et al.
Awesome book, a must have in D&D campain.......2006-11-24
There is so many details that you just can't stop reading. I recomend this book to anyone who does have D20 products.

Book Description
How to make a successful television series when there’s no money, everyone has been laid off, and your bosses are fighting
Canada: A People’s History was a monumental undertaking for the CBC and its executive producer, Mark Starowicz: thirty-two hours of film, aired in seventeen episodes over two years, and the first ever co-production between the CBC and Radio-Canada.
Making History is Starowicz’s shockingly candid account of the making of the series. Proposed at a time when the CBC was laying off veteran staff en masse and shutting down its production facilities because of government cutbacks, the very idea of the series was more like the last gasp of a dying corporation than a sound proposal. The obstacles the series faced were enormous: the incomprehension and lukewarm support of some of the CBC brass; the technical and political challenges of being the first ever French-English co-production in Canadian television; the exasperating job of searching for corporate partners. Despite these huge obstacles, when the series went to air, it took the country by storm, gathering record numbers of viewers each episode.
A madcap adventure story, an insider’s account of a major corporation at its nadir, and the story in microcosm of relations between English and French Canada, Making History is brutally honest and often very funny.

Canadian History - Mark Starowicz.......2005-03-21
As a Canadian for a large part of my adult life I'm surprised by what I didn't know regarding Canada's heritage.
Mark Starowicz is a legend in Canada and his writing is easily digested - not like the standard History class back in grade 9!
After reading the book I found he has a website www.markstarowicz.com with many more informative articles on the topic.
