We have had previous editions of this book by Barton Wirght for years. This up-dated edition is just more current, but overall it is a very helpful bood to us.

Although the exchange process was easy, both copies of the book that Amazon sent had pages either missing or hugely out of order. I wished there was a way for Amazon to check the copies, under such circumstances, before sending them out.

This is the eagerly-awaited second edition of Hallmarks of the Southwest; as a longtime collector of Native American jewelry, I'm happy to finally have a copy of this book.
Naturally, not every craftsman can be represented in such a comprehensive work, and complicating this is that not every piece is stamped with identifying marks. (Some of my favorite jewelry isn't stamped at all, even with "Sterling.") Many of the references are a carry-over from the first edition; since silversmithing is often a family tradition, certian respected craftsmen working today may not be represented but their families are.
It's a valuable overview, and leaves the reader [me, at least] wanting more.
Excellent reference - but a work in progress.......2006-01-11
I have been using this book since this edition was published. It is an excellent compilation of summary information about makers of Native American jewelry and other collectible wares. I expect that this has - to this point - only about one-third or one-half of the people listed who make jewelry. I annotate mine with added marks for unlisted jewelry makers, together with summary information on them. When I can, I ask the artisan to autograph the book, preferably near the added information.

This book is an excellent reference to anyone who collects or sells Native American Jewelry. It shows the mark of the well know artists in Native American silver jewelry. The Navajo , Hopi , Zuni Indians are all included in this book. Very detailed, I highly recommend it.

Not a Bad Little Book.......2000-09-10
Unfortunately, the author knows more than your average expert. When you correct someone and tell them it is a cramped joint not a dovetailed joint down the side of that pot, it's rough when he can site books considered tops in the field stating the contrary. Still the items shown are unique, the content informative and I am glad to have this book in my collection.

This book is twice as good as the First Melonpool! No, no wait... 5 times as good! If you only have the first Melonpool book, you are SOOOO uncool! You have to order this right now to get in on what's happening Melonpool-wise. Or else, your friends will all be talking about it and you'll be standing there with this dopey look on your face like, "Der... I don't get it." Come ON, man! Buy the book.
It's funnier than the first book, it's got more interesting comics, better art work (if that's even possible), I mean, what are you waiting for? Buy the book.

This Book Is "H.O.T.".......2007-05-06
Shane Rebenschied's Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Beyond the Basics Hands-On-Training (BTB:HOT) is the second book in a small series on teaching would-be developers how to effectively use Macromedia Flash in their web projects.
BTB:HOT is very well written. The author uses very clear instructions and appropriate graphics(screenshots) to illustrate the points being made. It is a very easy read, especially if you are weary of computer programming style books. The HOT series is written as if the instructor is standing beside you and telling you what you need to do.
This books was definitely written for the layman. This book was not written for someone who is looking to take Flash to the next level of professionalism. The book is very short (almost too short), and really doesn't include very much discussion about the possibilities that can happen with a particular project.
After reading this book and working through the examples, I determined that there really isn't anything new in this book that a seasoned web developer couldn't figure out after reading the first book in the series.
To finish, very good book, but just for novices.

This book is perfect for the transformation from beginning to intermediate. The tutorials are incredibly thorough plus it guides you through making a whole web site with the most practical functions. I highly recommend this book. I wish they would make more!
Good tutorial book on Flash.......2006-05-17
This is the first book on Flash and this is the first time I am learning Flash MX2004 Pro. So far I have gone through almost a half of the book and I am very pleased with how this book is structured and its CD which contains the project files as I am learning this program with this book. For any beginner, I feel this book will help get you started on learning and using Flash MX2004. I purchased this book's sister edition "Beyound the Basics" so that I can go one step further after I complete this book.
Good Intermediate Book, But Only Worth 3 Stars if You Can Program.......2006-03-02
Basically, this is a good book to get you from the initial HOT book on Flash to the more advanced tutorials found on the Macromedia Exchange site. The introduction to LoadVars and LoadMovieClip alone are worth the price of the book.
My only complaint, if you can call it that, would be that if you are coming from a programmer's background, you will skim A LOT of pages. You've got to hand it to the author in how he really takes his time introducing programming to the neophytes, but I found myself actually reading only 1 page out of every 3-6.
If you already know how to program in any language, you could probably find the tutorials online to get by without this book, but the expenditure in time probably wouldn't be worth the price of the book.
Written by a good teacher.......2006-01-06
Excellent book. The author has obviously taught classes and adopted a style that can be followed by any type of reader/student. If you are a novice you will have no trouble following each step-by-step lesson and learn the topics covered. When you are finished with the book your skill level will have improved.
If your skills are advanced or intermediate you will be able to get through each lesson quickly and learn another way of accomplishing something. The videos on the CD are good and delve deeper into the topics covered in the book.
One of the main goals of the book is to teach the concept of object oriented programming. As you go through the book you build a web site, or, better, an application that loads the different applications you learn about in the book, all tied together by a navigation section.
The use of winks and jokes may seem inappropriate to some, but it kept things light for me and I even laughed a couple of times.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn how to produce Flash applications. You must know the basics of Flash, and you will not learn about tying to databases or using XML or web services. This is why this is the perfect INTERMEDIATE Flash book.

Best of its kind.......2007-09-02
I've learned a whole raft of software by following the lessons in assorted books, but I must say this one topped the lot. I'm reasonably savvy at website work (I use Dreamweaver and Fireworks) and wanted to introduce some animation on our website, so it's time to begin learning Flash. This book is incredibly easy to follow (tells you what it's going to tell you, then tells you, and then tells you what it told you), puts everything in the right sequence, and gives context or big-picture explanations exactly when they're needed. Outstanding.

GREAT Way to Learn Flash .......2007-02-27
Over the last two years, I've purchased a few Flash books in the hopes of learning the tool and spicing up my website. For some reason, the materials never delivered on their promises and I ended up going with SwishMax in a pinch. This book does a GREAT job in teaching the materials...much better than I've experienced in the past. Now that I'm comfortable with Flash, I've put SwishMax back on the shelf.
BTW, I'm an IT project manager with 30 years experience and I just turned 60...never stop learning.
Clear, concise - excellent textbook!.......2007-02-04
I made the mistake of buying another Flash textbook without reading the reviews here. Big mistake! After two failed attempts at muddling through the text - I began to think that Flash was impossible to learn. I spent many hours following lessons without knowing what I was doing or why. And the book was full of technical errors, so often the lessons weren't even possible to follow.
I decided to give Flash one last chance. Based on the glowing reviews here I chose this Yeung / Weinman text.
What a difference!!! I feel like I'm not even using the same software. Within just a few minutes of reading this book I understood things about Flash that I didn't understand after many hours with the other book. Within hours I was creating my own animations with ease!
For a beginner, this book is clear, easy to follow and most importantly it helps you to really understand the concepts behind what you're doing.
I would recommend this to anyone.
Another helpful reference from Peachpit.......2007-01-22
Being in the media business, I've had the opportunity to use a myriad of software manuals and references. I have always found Peachpit Press offers clear, concise guides that bring you up to speed fast. Flash MX 2004 Hands-On Training is no exception. The only reason this book didn't get a five-star rating is because I love lots of free extras when the manual comes with a companion CD and this one came up lighter than I would have liked.

otherwise, the book seems to be all right plus the size of it gains some credit back. This book is good if you want to get a basic grip on AC/DC's songs. However, if you are looking for solid material that teaches you how to play like Malcolm and Angus, look elsewhere.
Again, I would recommend this for beginners(it will keep you busy for a while). But, if you're a player looking to take your playing to the next level and really tear the speaker cones out, then i wouldn't recommend it. Either way it's your choice, but it is still a good book despite the common errors.

I have only been playing for about six months, so I am not too good. If you are like me, and you want to improve your game, buy this book. It is fun to read and extremely helpful. I probably won't be able to master every technique in the book in ten years, but the two or three things I have learned have taken my game to a whole new level. I love it. It is all I need.
