Book Description

Sanford Robinson Gifford was a leading Hudson River School artist. His love of nature first surfaced as a youth growing up in Hudson, New York, and, together with his admiration for the works of Thomas Cole, inspired him to become a landscape painter. Influenced as well by J. M. W. Turner and by trips to Europe in the 1850s, Gifford's art was termed "air painting," for he made the ambient light of each scene-color saturated and atmospherically enriched-the key to its expression. Gifford was a founder of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the time of his death, he was so esteemed by the New York art world that the Museum mounted an exhibition of his work-its first accorded an American artist-and published a Memorial Catalogue that for nearly a century remained the principal source on the artist. Now, to coincide with a long-overdue exhibition of Gifford's work, an important new book is being issued. This volume features essays examining Gifford's position in the Hudson River School, his Catskill and Adirondack subjects, his patrons, and his adventures as a traveler both at home and abroad. More than seventy of the artist's best-known sketches and paintings are discussed and reproduced in color.

5 out of 5 stars Revisiting Sanford Robinson Gifford .......2005-12-15

One of the American masters of landscape painting in the nineteenth century was Sanford Robinson Gifford, and though he was highly celebrated in his lifetime, his name appears now only occasionally when the topic of the Hudson River School of art is discussed. This excellent monograph, which accompanied an exhibition of his work in 2003 - 2004, serves to restore the reputation of one of our less widely known artists who captured Americana on canvas and was an important leader of the Hudson River School of painting.

More than seventy reproductions of Gifford's paintings and drawings grace the pages of this book - scenes of the Adirondacks and Catskills, luminous river scenes filled with the transparency of fog and light. But the book also serves as an historical document with photographs and information about Gifford and his travels abroad with the obvious influence of JMW Turner. His perception and use of ambient light so distinct to the Hudson River Valley are both discussed and illustrated.

This is a fine monograph of an important artist: it is also a superb study in art history of one of the most eloquent schools of painting in American history. Recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

5 out of 5 stars Definitive coverge of Hudson River School artist.......2004-05-10

150 pages of the book are devoted to the works on display at the exhibition (I saw it at the Amon Carter). Since most of the works belong to private collectors, once the exhibition finishes at the National Gallery in Washington, this book will be the only place you will be able to look at the body of Gifford's work. The plates are excellent. If you like other Hudson River School painters, you will want this book.

3 out of 5 stars The unique designs are great , especially the dollhouse BUT.......1998-10-08

When I received this book and thumbed through it, I was very excited about the designs that were printed especially the furniture for the dollhouse. I later found that some of the instructions were either incomplete or missing altogether. For instance, the instructions on the mirror on page 22 don't include the base holding the umbrellas. The instructions for the lamp only include baking instructions for the lamp shade...what about the base?? Instructions for the bed say to partially bake a segment....that's fine but at what temperature and for how long?? Another thing that would have been helpful is include templates of the different pieces (or at least the dimensions) to ensure that all of the furniture is in proportion to each other. I find myself having to do alot of guessing on how to make some of the items in this book. Maybe with a little luck I'll figure how to make that cute little basinet on pg 32!!!

As far as the designs go, they are unique which I really do appreciate. I just feel that if a picture is shown of an item in a how-to book, there ought to be full and complete instructions on how to make that item and every item shown.

      5 out of 5 stars 'It's the water...'.......2005-12-07

The old jingle quoted above has gained new pertinence with Fred Goudon's marvelous new collection of photographs of men in their element. Though those who enjoy books on the male physique will find plenty to satisfy here, the real beauty of this book is the thematic manner in which Goudon approaches his concept of the play of water on man and the play of men in the water. With thoughts of our aqueous beginnings in the womb au natural, these well-composed photographs include water as in sea and river and water as in hose and shower. And the spectrum is quite amazing.

Goudon places (or finds!) his physically perfect male models both alone and with partners. His camera is able to define the presence of water on skin as though it were liquid mercury. Whether dousing their bodies with fountains of water or posed languidly in the ripples of sun and water instigated by the model, these are magnificent specimens in states of both innocence and arousal. There may be nothing new to Goudon's technique, but he certainly has captured some fine moments that should satisfy a very large audience! Grady Harp, December 05

      Book Description

Uplifting eroticism while demolishing myths, "Erotic Book" offers a fresh and exhilarating perspective on the sensuality and beauty of the female body. The author provides readers of "Erotic Book" with insights on what aspects of the female body actually arouse men, and why almost every woman potentially possesses an intensely erotic body. "Erotic Book" rebels against the objectification of women, and presents an understanding of female sensuality that integrates the feminine mind with the feminine body, creating a transcending erotic presence.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars One man's views.......2007-07-18

I'm captivated by female beauty, so I was interested at the prospect of a book dedicated to the subject from an artist's perspective. Unfortuately, the author has framed some of his statements to be representative of "most men." It's annoying and sloppy. For example, commenting that many women now shave their pubic hair, he observes that "most men" actually prefer women with pubic hair (without even broaching whether its trimmed or groomed). He fails to acknowledge that preferences vary widely and offers no data to support his statement. He has a section on body piercing where he goes to some lengths to explain how he's finally come around to accept the idea, but only in certain parts of the body, and again women are better off unadorned. Opinions on that subject also vary from person to person. Rather than discussing his preferences as strictly his own (e.g. "As a painter, I prefer 'x' because...") or doing some actual psychological or historical research, this book comes across as the organized ramblings of one opinionated man (whose opinions I don't share) - not intelligent discourse about a beautiful, age-old topic. I returned the book.

5 out of 5 stars A poetic hymn to the female body.......2006-11-12

This slim book is not just a delightful account of the female body, but a passionate hymn to the beauty of woman.
Intensely sensous, but not pornographic at all, it lovingly examines and exalts all the components of her body, underlining their significance from an aesthetic and erotic viewpoint.
It should be required reading for all photographers and painters alike as an introduction to the appreciation of the female body.
Art teachers had better leave anatomy manuals on the bookshelves from time to time and refer to this book as they teach life drawing classes, to arouse the students' genuine interest in what they are drawing.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic Book: Erotica Secrets of Sexy Female Bodies for Men And Women.......2006-08-01

Erotic Book is an open and honest study of the female form, through the eyes of the author. Filger's background in Fine Art Photography is evident by the exquisite detail in which he views every nuance of the female form. Anyone who does not see the beauty in their own body needs to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book About Women's Bodies & Female Sensuality.......2006-07-04

This is an amazing book, more so as the author is man, but one with unusual perception when it comes to understanding the female psyche about their bodies and sexuality. Sheldon Filger presents the entire female body as an artistic tapestry, and enables the reader to understand the heavenly beauty that is the body of a woman. I really felt empowered after reading this appropriately-named "Erotic Book." Women will truly feel liberated after reading it--and men will also have new insights, and a wonderful gift for their special woman.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic Book - Learn the Secrets!.......2006-05-14

I found this book very refreshing. Every woman should read this! Learn what turns men on about our bodies before you consider any augmentation, you will be pleasantly surprised. Thank you Sheldon Filger for telling us something we really needed to hear.

3 out of 5 stars Book is great but the cd?.......2006-01-27

Let's face it: Ari is a pretty boy. He knows it & so do we! He's so sexy it's a sin but dude can't sing. He knows it & so do we! I've never heard him live but listening to some of his music, I can imagine what he'd sound like. Not being mean (after all, I did say he was sexy), just keepin' it real. Everyone can't sing but apparently that isn't stopping Ari, God love him. I don't know where he finds the nerve but hey.....

Now Billy Porter (I hear he's Ari's boyfriend) is very talented, great voice on cd & in person. Like I said, very talented. I know this is supposed to be all about Ari but I just thought I'd give Billy a well deserved plug.

I have been following Ari Golds career and seen him perform at Fez, Joes Pub,and other venues and even a private party out in East Hampton where he blew away the normally sedate crowd!

I love the Space Under Sun CD and have given it to numerous friends here and in other countries as well. Always well received.

I am so impressed with the quality of the new Book. It is a really well done hard cover book with exceptional quality photos on high quality paper. Of course Ari is gorgeous, sweet and sexy in all of them, but that was a given folks!

It is suggestive, sexy, creative and yet stays away from being too graffic. Here a little less is more.

The remix CD is killer. I have been playing it nonstop. Recreating your favorite songs in new and different ways.

I can't be more excited about the new book and CD (comes with it). Just bring it with you next time you see Ari perform and he will sign it for you. ( I did!)

3 out of 5 stars used or not at all.......2007-05-27

like others said the pictures are grainy. not enough lighting on some...need some ethnic women...

      2 out of 5 stars Several Problems.......2007-01-13

I've seen several mentions of grainy photos, and they are grainy, however that is the least of the problems with this book.

First of all many of the figures have been traced out from the background the photo was taken with and pasted onto a plain white background, causing multiple problems, like persepctive and flat or squished body surfaces where the models were originally sitting or lying on something. The "cutting and pasting" is sloppily done, and in many of the photos the tips of toes and fingers have been cut off, very annoying.

Secondly, there are several photographs that take up two pages...but this is a bound book, so the entire center of the body is not visible, and because a portion is in the binding even the countour is not usable. In additon to the two page layouts, there are multiple other figures that fall directly in the center of the book, and are rendered unusable by the binding. The only thing I can figure is that this was originally a spiral bound book, or had pull out pages, like a magazine centerfold. I can't imagine someone would intentionally publish a book with such an awful layout.

Lastly, some of the "motion" figures are cheats. One in particular is clearly a man laying on something propped up on a pillow, but he has been cut and pasted as though it were an upright pose...maybe that explains why so many found the poses "unatural". That wouldn't be a big deal if the book wasn't called "The Figure In Motion", and was maybe titled "Some Figures In Motion, and Some Sedentary But Turned To Appear As Though They Were In Motion."

Couldn't give it no stars, as I will use some of the photos, but my money could most certainly have been better spent.

3 out of 5 stars decent book, not a must-have.......2006-12-31

the photographs aren't of the BEST quality [very grainy], but that didn't really bother me much.

the poses are very un-natural and a little forced.

there is a lack of male models in this, so if you're looking to use this as a reference book for males i suggest you keep browsing elsewhere.

      over-all a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars The Figure in Motion.......2006-09-16

This is the best book on anatomy (for sculptors), that I have found so far!

Almost any shift of any muscle can be found in one of the photographs. Some of the pictures are a little too dark, but not so much that you can't get the pose. Since I found this book, I haven't needed any other anatomy books.

Must have book for your reference library.

5 out of 5 stars figure in motion.......2006-08-05

i am pleased with this book. i can't imagine another pose that is not in this book on motion

                Book Description

This classic study of black images in American motion pictures, this year enjoys its thirtieth anniversary of continuous publication through four editions, and is now available in a special hardcover gift edition, having sold over 200,000 copies in paperback. Identical to the new student-edition paperback (fall 2001), this one includes the entire 20th century through black images in film, from the silent era to the unequaled rise of the new African American cinema and stars of today. Bogle's book and work have had an unparalleled impact on students of film as well as the filmmakers and actors themselves. From The Birth of a Nation, Gone with the Wind, and Carmen Jones to Shaft, Do the Right Thing, Waiting to Exhale, The Hurricane, and Bamboozled, Donald Bogle reveals the way the image of blacks in American cinema has changed - and also the shocking way in which it has often remained the same.

5 out of 5 stars Politically Incorrect Title hides masterful intro to rich history of Negroes in Film.......2006-12-10

Have you ever seen Green Pastures, or Hallelujiah, or any of the other Studio made films of the Golden Age that feature all black casts?

                I have.

Have you ever seen any of the Independent Films with all black casts made during the same period, but only seen in theatres catering to black audiences?

                I have, sadly, not.

                This book opened my eyes.

Forget the familiar actors of the 80's to the present day, even the great ones, this book will open your eyes to the rich heritage of black actors, and film, between 1955 and 1975, but more importantly it will reveal to you the complicated, yet glorious, world of these films, and actors, in the Golden Age of film.

If you belong to Netflix, or some other similar service then search out the films, and actors mentioned here if they are available and rent their films.

                You will not be disappointed.

I strongly encourage the true depiction of all early cinematic protrayals of African-Americans, and other non-white categories as they were. We have to let our younger generations of future stars know that some roles have a negative effect and dont show us "Do Justice". This is why we need more Cinematic Historians and Oscar Micheax & Spike Lee role models...

This is perhaps the GREATEST book accounting the plight of Blacks in film. I read this book for a class titled "Blacks in the Electronic Media" during undergrad. After reading this book and watching television, I honestly felt as if I were let out of the "Matrix." To this day, I can not watch television and not be critical of whats being aired. These charatcters are very visible today at this very moment. If you want a deep experience and to fully understand whats on the television and the movie screen, BUY THIS BOOK!

2 out of 5 stars Bogle is the mole! Why not add the "n" word to that title?.......2003-11-13

Bigoted and racist title for a book about talented blacks, their deserving of a more honorable title since they were called these racist nicknames all their lives and had to be these stereotypes to show their talent, but he can get away with naming a book as he has this one because he's Black, I'm sure if a white did the same, the NAACP will jump on him. Bogle suppose to lift Blacks up not put them down.

Here's a long but informative review!
Naturally since Bogle is the only one writing about early Black film stars people believe everything he says. He plays it safe by always talking about the same ole' stars that he talked about in his last books. Never does he introduce the public to unsung talents we never heard of. He spends most of the time talking about how mulatto, how light or how dark such and such is and how such and such couldn't do this or that because of this or that. When whites write on their stars they don't write about how blonde, how brunette or how red head someone was and how Irish or Italian one looked. Which proves how stuck on skin color Blacks really are! Why do Blacks feel they always have to spend time talking about race instead of giving these stars their recognition and due, forgetting how they look and telling of their life and versatile careers, who they really were, where they come from, making one reading feel like they knew the person all their lives, make one feel the happiness and sadness.
Bogle spends more time on what they didn't do then what they did do. Which is sad, the public is missing out on a lot. So again, do for yourself the research and don't' depend on others all the time.

Bogle loves talking about how white Fredi Washington looked instead of writing about her extensive, incredible career, she done more in her life then most of us could dream about it, she didn't let others prejudices hold her back. She was no tragic mulatto, another stupid name, minus well call Stepin Fetchit a tragic ni**er which he wasn't, he was the first black millionaire and no more of a stereotype then Black pimps, gangsters of today who are getting rich off of it like Step got rich off of his stereotype. Fredi will be the first to say she had a great life and career. She wasn't sad or confused but a strong black woman. Bogle is no better than a white writer who puts down a black but thinks its okay to coin a book Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies and Bucks because he's black, I'm sure if a white titled a book that we be yelling racism, don't Black talents deserve a better title?

Bogle also plays it safe by always talking about Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge, never telling the stories and never giving recognition to other black actresses like Nina Mae McKinney, Mildred Washington, Theresa Harris, Fredi Washington, Edna Mae Harris, Florence O'Brien, Louise Franklin, Daisy Bufford, Jeni LeGon Evelyn Preer, Suzette Harbin, Hilda Simms, Francine Everett, Shirley Haven and countless of others who had a chance to display their talents on the screen in Hollywood and helped fight discrimination and help in the enhancement and betterment of blacks on screen but he gives all the credit to Horne and Dandridge, who didn't do as much as others if you want to get down to the truth, but I'm glad he don't talk about them in a way because he'll butcher up their life stories, I'll give them their due though. Many aren't remembered because maybe they didn't do as much, who cares about who has done more, were suppose to be remembering them for accomplishments and talents, right? White film historians sure remember all their stars, little or big. Someone like Louise Brooks, considered a early Hollywood icon is highly regarded as a great actress despite she only had a few good films and wasnt a big movie star. The woman is more remembered for one good film and a bobbed hairstyle but white historians will make sure you know her, her achievements and what she DID DO for the film industry. Why can't Bogle be like that instead of criticizing everyone and judging them by white people's standards of what success and beauty is? I guess it's true that you gotta work twice as hard as whites to be someone in this world, whites can be remembered for little things, few successes, Blacks gotta have many successes to get rememberance and recognition even for other Blacks to remember them. Bogle is one of the few black film historians, you would think he would write more positively of blacks in Hollywood but he treats many worse then whites treated them when they were alive. Bogle never mentions Willie Covan and Marie Bryant (and appeared in movies also and was a good friend of Lena Horne's too) who choreograhed many white stars, they were behind the scenes but contributed to Hollywood. He suppose to be giving credit not taking away. Either Bogle is too lazy or likes to show favoritism because he sure won't tell other unsung talents stories. If he does he clutter it up with talking about their looks especially if he doesn't know how to write about them. Bogle knows nothing about the great career of Nina Mae McKinney, the first movie star of Hollywood and Europe, who done more films then any other black actress of her time, the first to appear on many magazines, she had so many achievements, yet he gives her one little page, if you don't know about a person, I rather you not write about them at all then to write lies. He never talks about the Black Cinema independent movie stars or the industry who was apart of American cinema, I guess their too hard for him to research, so he takes the easy path in writing about stars he already wrote about a million times. He never writes about Ethel Moses, Francine Everett, Dorothy Van Engle, Edna Mae Harris, Margaret Whitten, Tomiwitta Moore, Bee Freeman, Lorenzo Tucker, Monte Hawley, Ralph Cooper (created the first black studio in Hollywood), Oscar Micheaux, Spencer Williams and countless other black movie stars who appeared in films for blacks made by blacks in the 30's and 40's, I guess that's too mediocre for him but they done more for the enhancement of Blacks in movies by creating their own images, own roles, own portrayals, playing people from all walks of life unlike ones in Hollywood who were stuck playing the same types of roles and being the same images he always complaining about well I feel give due to ones who at least tried to do for themselves and become what they wanted but see they weren't cross-overs so their looked at as non-important by some which kind of dictated by whites who we should remembered and who's important. It's hard researching Black Cinema stars but boy it's worth it plus studying them, watching them perform gives you a good idea of who they were even if you can't find info on them. I still find the time to give them due and I'm no professional or anything but Bogle is a high class guy who only likes to write about Hollywood and his favorite gals Horne and Dandridge.

Ive done more research on unsung, forgotten stars then he has and it has been pleasurable teaching others on the net about blacks who contributed to stage and screen, stars who were just as important as Dandridge and Horne. I'm glad there are other people who are taking it upon themselves to tell the true stories of many unsung black legends and don't write in the same fashion as Bogle. Anyone who is hung up on skin color and don't want to think outside the box and like to hear the same stories then Bogle is for you but someone like me who researched many early black stars of stage and screen on my own and found out the real deal, found how they really were, found how they were really looked at, and found the true stories wouldn't appreciate Bogle's work much. I've talked with some legendary Blacks of the early years, some of their relatives also and they gave a completely different view then how Bogle describes them which shows he just goes by hearsay and documents and don't do accurate interviewing and researching.

I would think Bogle would spend more time on talking about the beauty of black women from dark to light and their wonderful achievements to the world. Black women are quite unique but instead Bogle tells the story of black women from white people's perspective it seems, he tells how black women were looked at from whites perspective not from a true black person's perspective that has pride for his race, maybe Bogle has a white person's way of thinking who is partial. Because I would commend these women, embrace and make the world embrace their beauty, courage, and talents; their many gifts to the world isn't as nearly written about as their skin tones are.
He loves spending time writing about how light, dark or mulatto someone looks. Again, he makes it seem like such and such suffered because she was mulatto, light or dark, come on man, if she had a tragic life it was her own fault if she suffered. He makes it seem like color and race was the problem for everything which is false, actually many of these women profited from the race sometimes and plus women in general face discrimination, no matter what race or color. Don't you think these women went through enough being judged by skin tone or looks, they wished in their life for being to judge their talent, at least give them that now, Bogle doesn't. Who isn't discriminated against in this world? Bogle makes it look like Black is a curse when these female performers change the world and introduce the world to their greatness and the greatness of the race. He loves talking about whether someone should of passed for white or not like when he's talking about the great Fredi Washington. He misses out on showcasing other great talents like Valaida Snow, Blanche Calloway, Una Mae Carlisle, Eunice Wilson, Adelaide Hall and others but that's okay because they have been written beautifully about by other writers. Well, many are dead so they cant stick up for themselves and Bogle takes advantage of that, he hasn't even interviewed or actually talked to ones who he writes about, he just goes by hearsay. Have your favorites but when you write a book, you can't show favoritism which he does all through which hurts others who has a story to tell but he only give honor to his faves. It seems no black can make him happy, he always has something to criticize. In his words every Black woman is a tragic, confused mulatto and every black man is a coon, or some other stereotype, he wouldn't say that to the young black guys or gals in entertainment today though, he takes advantage of the dead who can't stick up for themselves.

There is a website on unsung black talents of stage and screen, you all will enjoy.

This book is very interesting and valuable. Mr. Bogle is one of the authorities on African Americans in films. He put a lot of examples in his book. Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks, all images in American films, are history of the race and culture in the U.S.

I was asked to teach a Kid's Yoga summer program. I wasn't sure where to start and didn't know if I could keep the children's interest. This book was a great resource. If you are a Yoga Teacher and new to teaching kids this book is a must. The kids loved the class and partially due to Yoga Games for Children.

5 out of 5 stars I Really Liked This Book.......2006-01-07

If you are looking for a very serious yoga book, this is not the book for you. It contains very little "yoga theory" or any philosophy, etc. But if you are looking for fun and healthy ways to get your kids using yoga, this book would be very helpful.

Whether you are reading the book as a parent or as an educator, you will get lots of cute ideas on how to integrate yoga with even very young children [3 and up]. There are a whole lot of different activities - including yoga poses that are child friendly, breathing awareness, relaxation, visualization, and games to build trust and team work.

I am finding this book very useful in designing a fun exercise class for preschool and younger elementary age children. I would recommend it without reservation.

4 out of 5 stars Yoga Games for Children: Fun and Fitness With Postures, Movements, and Breath.......2005-08-17

As a yoga teacher for children, I found the book a tremendous resource. It addressed topics to develop coping skills, including acknowledging grief and anger, and also focused on entertaining activities. The authors used many useful icons in order to specify which activities would be apropos for which age groups, whether the activity would be for small groups, pairs, or individuals, etc. The only concern I experienced while using the icons was the time frames, which were a little "optimistic". It is infinitely difficult to truly keep children focused for the time frames indicated. Overall, the book is definitely worth buying! One will use it over and over again to develop lesson plans and fresh new ideas.

This is an amazingly interesting book. The authors, Siegel and Siegel did an outstanding job, of compiling an accurate history of this exceptional actors life, with taste and professionalism. It is a classy treatise, by writers who understand that their subject, is a man who personifies class, in everything he does. There is no hint of gossip or criticism. They were very generous with their praise of this majestic actor and his magical reign over the hearts of his adoring fans. He was presented as a versatile actor who has had successes on the stage, movies, musicals, and especially in the medium of television, where he got his start. His regal image was strongly emphasized, as he has played his share of kings, princes, lords, counts, Caesars, samurais, and ambassadors. His gallery of characters are all of noble or heroic proportions.

As his most ardent admirer, I have spent a lifetime following Richard Chamberlain's career and enjoying his wonderful performances, not to mention my diligent collecting of his fine works. I felt right at home in the pages of this complimentary book and found my heart soaring with the deserving praise and kind and generous account of his amazing career. It is true, Richard Chamberlain is America's finest classical actor, and has created roles that have made him America's most beloved actor, whose works shall never be forgotten.

This book is interesting and fun reading for all Chamberlain fans, but it simply glosses over the surface of the life of an enigmatic and complex actor. There is really nothing in-depth here, which, I suppose, is exactly how Chamberlain wants it.
