Book Description
Where else can you find such an incredible collection of 14 young comic, anime and manga artists willing to share the secrets of their techniques? Each artist includes a brief biography, the most representative work and a gallery of their best work with step-by-steps on how to create the work. The last chapter features a who's who in the industry or "Tree of Japanese Comickers" and information about the art materials used by each artist along with a glossary of terms unique to Japanese comic/anime illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Great visuals but misleading title.......2006-09-23
14 young talented artists showcase a brief selection of their works in different mediums. The books features mainly the anime/manga style, of which character design and/or fantasy theme is the key inspiration.
If you are planning to purchase this book 'cuz the title declares 'Draw anime & manga like Japan's hottest artists', and you are a beginner artist or step-by-step learner or plain want to copy the form exactly, be prepared for disappointment. This book may offer some insight to the artists working processes, but very general tutorials are given, it takes seasoned artists to be able to somewhat mimick the steps. Good for reference or if you wanna poke your nose about the 'how-to's... seriously which artist/designer will so willingly offer their trade secrets to the public? Of which, the glossary sometimes baffles me because the entries are either redundant or don't carry much interest.
However, I like this book, its a good reference for inspiration, especially for the various ways to experiment with the anime genre; as well as full colored graphics on glossy pages. Sadly there are no descriptions for the artworks done but oh well it is reasonable for the $16 price tag amazon.com offers I guess.
A Bit Of A Disappointment.......2006-09-08
An avid Manga and Anime fan, I'd do anything to be able to create beautiful Manga characters, or even practice the technique used to eventually create a more personal character style. I had hoped this book would sort of "take-me-by-the-hand" and teach me how to start sketching manga characters before anthing else. But, it's more or less copying rendering and coloring techniques.
the artwork published is neverthless impressive.
it good but its not for everyone.......2005-08-09
this has some beautiful art in it. it also has some ugly art.... if thats what you can call it. but it does show you each artist's technic if not how they did each peice. so if you like anima and photoshop look into it. oh, thats what you are doing? well i gave it 4 stars didnt i. maybe three.... but i have had a good day.
Excellent for expanding your skills.......2004-12-28
This book should be called "How to color like japanese artists". This book is VERY short and mostly very beautiful images. It is NOT NOT for newbies. This book is for people who know how to draw and color different mediums and want to refine their techniques or pick up new tricks. The multiple artists have very varied techniques in coloring via photoshop, painter, illustrator, watercolor, copic marker. These are NOT in depth tutorials. It is VERY useful if you want to compare your style to other artists and get inspiration.
Definately a keeper.......2003-11-23
This is great for the artist who already has a working knowledge of their own style, but needs a little help and inspiration to get their coloring and composition techniques down. Instead of trying to shove formulaic anime style down my throat, it exposed me to fourteen distinct styles and let me see the process of these artists, instead of urging me to draw and color exactly like them. It's only flaw is it assumes the reader already has a working knowledge of artist tools and programs - but it was probably aimed towards a serious student of art, not people that need help learning how big to make their anime-eyes, or how their cat girls should look. Oh, and another plus-side: No cat girls. Thank you!

Satisfying Conclusion To the Lighthouse Scene.......2007-01-24
(Contains spoilers from previous volumes) In the previous volume, we witnessed the lighthouse girls kill each other after Yuko Nakagawa was killed from eating her poisoned soup. The one responsible, Yuko, is actually still alive, and has become very emotionally unstable.
Shuya comes face to face with Yuko, only to be shot at, believing he is a "demon boy". Will Shuya be able to tell Yuko what really happened and save her, or will she have her way and kill him?
The art is fantastic as usual, and there's nothing bad to say about the dailogue. I must say the scenes involving Yuko took much longer than they needed (almost 1/2 of the volume), but the rest of the story was fine.
Definately pick this up, especially if you just read 9, for it's an adequate conclusion to the lighthouse segment. It's getting down to the wire, with only 9 students left at the beginning
SUGIMURA FINDS KOTOHIKI.......2006-06-09
After finding his best friend Takako too late and having her die in his arms a couple of volumes back, Sugimura made a vow to find his love interest Kotohiki and protect her from a similar fate. At the beginning of Volume 11 he finally does find her. But things quickly worsen because the cold as ice demon Kiriyama is on their trail, and there is no chance of reasoning with such a monster. Through the use of flashbacks we get insight into Sugimura's character and how he fell for Kotohiki. We also find out about the self-doubt and perceived weakness beneath his martial arts fighter look and the reason why he fears the inevitable battle with Kiriyama.
11 is a pretty weak installment in this series. The flashback sequences in Battle Royale have always been a drawback in my mind and an unwelcome interruption in the main action. But they weren't as obtrusive in the beginning because exposition is what you do in the outset of a story. But here we are close to the end, and the writer is STILL explaining why these characters behave the way they do! I don't want to read pages and pages of the characters chatting about the good old days when in reality every second they spend blabbing increases their chance of getting killed. I would recommend buying Volume 12 along with 11 because this book ends in a cliffhanger ending just as the action gets started.
A TIME TO THINK, A TIME TO KILL.......2006-05-22
After nearly being killed by the calmly psychotic Kiriyama, Shuuya was left in the care of a group of girls who had decided to abstain from the Program. He promises them that there is a way of beating the game, and that they can all retain their humanity instead of descending into mindless murder. He doesn't notice that one of the girls has had a less than healthy reaction to his arrival in the group. Yuko Sakaki, believing wrongly that Shuuya is lying to the girls and is playing the game, tries to poison him. Instead of killing Shuuya, she accidentally kills one of the other girls and what happens next is pretty predictable, seeing how messed up the situation is, even for friends. In a senseless shoot-out, all the girls kill each other, leaving Yuko the only survivor. As Volume 10 begins, Shuuya arrives in the aftermath of the bloodbath to face Yuko.
This volume of Battle Royale is about Shuuya facing up to the fact that his ideals of "people won't play if you just reason with them" and that "everyone has a spark of goodness in them" are put to the test. Shuuya is not a strong character because of his fighting skills. He is strong because he chooses NOT to fight, NOT to kill. So it's going to be interesting to see if he can survive the Program and still remain true to himself. This installment is a more meditative tome that others, because Shuuya finally has time to think, and that's not necessarily a good thing. What does it all mean? He'll have to think about his next move as he makes his way back to Shogo and Noriko, two people he hopes are still alive. The contestant pool is getting awfully small these days.
MITSUKO LETS IT ALL OUT.......2005-12-19
As you can tell from the cover of Volume 8, Mitsuko takes center stage in this volume, with all the bodily assets that she squeeze into it! Mitsuko is always looking for a few nice boys to kill some time....I mean boys to kill and she'll stop at nothing to gain their trust in order to slice their throats with her mini-scythe. The next two unfortunate lucky guys are the complete pre-adolescent loser Yuichiro and the brawn of the outfit Tadakatsu. Mitsuko weasels her way out of the attempted killing of Tadakatsu and gains the trust of Yuichiro and then the mind games begin. Mitusuko's body is on full display as she tries to turn the friends against each other and mark off some more contestants from the Program. But she reveals a bit too much as we find out what caused her to become so warped and morally repugnant.
Battle Royale 8 was a little over the top, bordering on the ultraviolent pornography stereotype of manga in the West. So many bodily fluids are excreted in this installment that you might want to wash yourself with a garden hose after reading it. In some ways you feel that Mitsuko's victims deserve their fate for letting their lust cloud their judgement. I mean while they are too embarrassed to look at her naked body, they have no qualms about killing their fellow students. Not for the squeamish, but still an engaging, if tragic and heart-rending series.
This is the Vol. 11 review page, right...?.......2005-02-05
First, before I say anything else, let me say that I write this review while bearing the ELEVENTH volume in mind, as this page does have the cover of manga volume #11. I don't know why others are reviewing the novel (and why some are moronic enough to rank the movie above the manga/novel)...but whatever.
Have you seen the movie? Or read the novel? Are you willing to pick up only one Battle Royale manga volume among all of the ones you see on the shelves? Then make sure it's this one. Not only because the Kotohiki/Hiroki meeting is a much happier, slightly romantic alternative to the movie/novel one, but because...
Taguchi's art is gorgeously illustrated in these chapters, having some lovely dark and iconic pages of characters, a la Volume 8, to some extent. Volume 8 will still remain as the most chilling book, both in terms of artwork and story, but the word "grotesque" has much more than a minute part to play in this volume as well - it simply carries a less... promiscuous meaning.
This topical, character-focused, gloomy cover art is what all of the covers should be like in my opinion. But the latter ones to the highest degree, seeing as how they're in wind-up, hope-is-gone mode. I've seen the cover art for Volume 13, which is already released in Japan, and it's very disappointing. I was getting sick of constantly seeing boring happy shots of Shuuya - in fact, it's what deterred me from picking up the manga in the first place. However, this kind of cover art is not work that would bring someone completely foreign to Battle Royale into Battle Royale, but it doesn't need to be. Simplistic though this art may be, every little aspect of the front has meaning that is obviously dispersed throughout the book - the cross, symbolizing his "boy scout"-ness, his teardrop-like blood, symbolizing his fight with Kiriyama, his hopeless yet firm look into the light, symbolizing the [self-explanatory], and finally his expression, symbolizing gloom, maybe even repression. That's how I perceived it anyways and while others may not take scrutinize the cover to such a degree, I'm sure many will appreciate this.
Kiriyama easily takes the cake as the coolest (as well as the coldest) character in the manga/novel, despite him being the least developed and the weirdest in the movie. If there's one thing I could have asked more for in the novel it would be more of Kiriyama's backstory. Which we do get, and when you get to the end, there's a cliffhanger that hints at the possibility of there being more...
Kazuo. Kiriyama. He kills, but not out of hatred, odd idealism, sadism, psychosis, stupidity, or the like...but out of a simple and logical willingness to play The Program. No volume released so far makes this clearer, and based on what I've read in the novel, it's not likely to be made more clear in the future; automatically making this and the subsequent book a must-buy for Kiriyama enthusiasts (such as myself).
Giffen's humor also helps a bit. Of course, I'm not entirely positive the guy intended his DBZ, Batman, and Boy Scout remarks&references to be funny, perhaps just a mere "Americanization", but this guy's irreverence towards some of the original lines make me laugh. 'Specially as a longtime DBZ fan.
Here, in this volume, the manga series truly begins the "countdown" segment of Battle Royale. The punks, hoes, conceited morons, and other extraneous (but interesting and fun) characters are gone. They're all gone.
Order this, now. You're a fool if you don't; a fool who deserves his ey-...oops, almost let a spoiler slip =).

A peek inside old Hollywood.......2006-01-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this auto-biography by Ave Gardner. She really said what she thought. Her writing style seemed to be her true personality, since she was from rural N. Carolina. She was the definition of a "broad". She was a great beauty, but she seemed to definitely dwell on her looks. She may have thought she didn't have much else going for her. Having recently read Gene Tierney's autobiography, I noticed that difference between the two. Tierney was fabulously beautiful, but didn't mention her looks but a few times,(possibly because it was so obvious). Ava Gardner also drank heavily. I'm amazed she was able to keep her looks for being such a heavy drinker. But in her films, around the age of 40, when she should have still been gorgeous, not having had children, she began to have a droopy face. That had to be the result of all that alchohol. It saddened me that she felt the need to abort the child she concieved with Frank Sinatra, even though they were married! It's no wonder she died a lonely woman.
a DAMN good book!!!.......2005-05-26
If you can imagine what Ava Gardner was like, then this book is a must. It reads just like you'd imagine it would. This is absolutely the best-of-the-best autobiography I have read to date. I have read Marilyn Monroe's and Maureen O'Hara's, and they weren't nearly as captivating. When I think of Ava Gardner, I use to think of sexuality and booze. Now after having read this book, I still think that. She has quite the sense of humor and makes numerous witty retorts in regards to her life and the studio system that she fervently disliked. This is most evident in her words on husbands Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra, and how they were in bed. Also, not to be ignored is her unique relationship with "the Aviator" himself, Howard Hughes. Ava is the only woman who could have turned him down, and gotten away with giving him a scar to remember her by. She also discusses her love of Spain, which made me want to visit the place instantly, even though I have yet to do so do to limited means (I don't have a job and still live with my parents - get the picture?). This is probably the best book I have ever read.
Good story.......2005-05-19
I also was initially distracted by the country girl narrative ("and honey, let me tell you...") but settled into it. It's a good story and to me writing style is secondary when reading an autobiography.
I have always had the impression that Ava was a man-eating femme fatale but this book cast her in a much more human and humble light. I did get the impression that she softened some stories or left some out entirely. I was touched by what she did reveal - her humble beginnings, painful shyness, lack of self esteem, and her deep love for Frank Sinatra. All in all, this story contained all the elations and tragedies you'd find in anyone's lifetime.
It's a great read and I'd recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about this beautiful star.
if you are a fan of Ava's, please read this book.......2004-11-27
This is an enjoyable, engaging memoir and while entertaining is also surprisingly sad. I knew, before reading the book, who Ava had married but had no idea how tumultuous were these relationships. As I've not read any other books about Ava Gardner, I can not tell whether this book's contents closely resemble truth but, frankly, I don't really care. I read autobiographies so I get a better sense of the author and in this case, Ava's wit, intelligence and humanity shine through. I certainly don't agree with the reviewer who says Ava painted herself as a goody-goody - that is the last thing she seems to do. This is a woman who, to me, has struggled with relationships, insecurities and addictions and still managed to enjoy and relish life - like many of us. If anything, I felt positive and connected to Ava for her candour! And, if, factually speaking, Ms. Gardner was not completely accurate in her own story, so what? I would rather read her story in her own words. The saddest thing to me was that she passed away at such a young age. I think "Impertinent" gives an excellent and articulate review and all I can say is read this book if you'd like to know about one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood.
cant help lovin..........2002-12-02
In addition to demonstrating a self-deprecating wit and a candor that is often surprising, even in an autobiography, in this memoir Ava Gardner conveys a warmth and genuineness that makes her (in my opinion) an instantly likable narrator. Then, the fact that the events of her life would have given enough material to make a great story even if she herself wasn't such an engaging storyteller.
This book is tempered with irony. Ava's reflections on some of her greatest times are presented through a veil of bittersweet nostalgia. That her life was a sad one is evident; she details three failed marriages to some of the era's more notable celebrities/womanizers and her constant sense that her career path was accidental, and her eventual phase as recluse and expatriate. These events told from the perspective of an aging woman - one who seems to have been truly convinced that her fading (?) beauty is her only marketable asset create an exquisitely tragic heroine. Consistently smart and irreverent, Ava balances this obvious sadness and feeling of being misplaced with a stoic insistence that she's had "a hell of a good time." In all, her willingness to poke fun at herself and her open examinions of her personal weaknesses provide a refreshing counterpoint to the usual self-aggrandizement of the Hollywood auto-biography. I strongly recommend the book, if not for pure entertainment, for a compelling portrait devoid of literary pretensions.

This volume offers an introduction to the field of women, music, and culture, examining the implications of gender upon music performance. The presentation focuses on women from many different countries, cultures and historical periods--from the professional musician to the village preserver of traditional music and culture, from the young woman of the 19th century of hymnody tradition of the U.S. to the female tayu or "chanter" in the male dominated Gidayu narrative tradition of Japan.

Customer Reviews:
Don't go all in yet.......2007-08-01
I thinks this book is not for begginers the author I assume a lot of knowledge and experience from the readers. But if you are an advance player well... then the book will not teach you much.
If you are an intermediate poker player willing to invest some money on the tables trying to understand what Ciaffone is trying to tell you, well I think this is your book... I think he is teaching the right way to play but only experience and practice can help you understand what he is trying to say.
Great Book - DON'T SELL TOO MANY!.......2007-01-04
I have a collection of over 40 poker books, and this is one of the most down to earth, actionable books I have in my library. Many books are written by pros , for pros, but this one is understandable by semi pros and total amateurs alike.
It would be hard NOT to improve your game after reading this well thought out and well written book by a past master. Ciaffone is not one of the current "rock stars" of poker, but certainly is one of the better players of the past few decades. His insights are well worth the price of the book.
I had heard his name before, but never expected the depth of information he provides.
this one is the best for intermediate and advanced players.......2006-02-26
Are you tired of buying poker books yet? And each one starts out "well, here's the basics of how to play...". NOT THIS BOOK.
This book assumes you know how to play the game, and want a little serious advice on how to seriously improve your poker.
The book is a real value for the money, and for the time you will spend reading it. I highly recommend it.
Excellent.......2005-11-29
Ciaffone's one of the best poker writers in the nation, and this collection contains some of his best advice. A great companion to Theory of Poker. Highly recommended
Lots of jargon and a little scattered, but interesting.......2005-07-29
This is an ok book. It's not great, nor is it terrible. It's just kind of random so there's a little for everyone, but not a lot for most, I would guess. I would definitely not recommend this book to anyone who's just getting started with poker; the author assumes a lot of knowledge about some subtleties of the game and never misses and opportunity to speak in jargon when plain English might have been as good.

Don't spend the money. Buy something else........2007-01-09
I found this book to be full of superficial advice. "Oh, and you can play poker online, too. There are even tournaments online. The advantage of tournaments are that you know what your max loss might be, going in, as it's limited to the entry fee." That's not a real quote, but you get the idea. Having read the chapters, my first thought was "Really? Really? Now why on earth did you spend the time to put this book together?"
If you find someone who says to you "Holdem? What's holdem?", you can give him this book. But if he doesn't say that, you can't give him this book. He already knows everything in this book. And so do you.
I do believe the book should have been properly labeled "For the most raw beginners only". If that had happened, I wouldn't have bought the book. Many people, who are just barely past the Beginner Stage, wouldn't buy the book. They are seeking Intermediate Stage advice, and this book isn't it. For the most raw beginner, this book might offer something. It certainly offered nothing to me. Don't spend the money, in my opinion. Buy something else.
Pressure Poker.......2007-01-04
Very helpful book for understanding tournament play. Fresh, new insights were very valuable.
Fine, fine job, A's.......2006-12-26
I'm a pretty stubborn person and don't like to take advice from people, but this was the first poker book I bought since I got so much detailed and helpful advice from doubleas' blog site (it's still the only poker book I own). Yes, I lost $ when I started playing poker online, but have been much more successful since reading Scott's book. He does cover a lot of the basics, but also expands into the other realms of poker which most people should find interesting. There is no such thing as the perfect book, so I'm not sure what some of the complaints are about. If you aren't interested in a certain portion of the book...just skip it...there are plenty of other interested readers who would enjoy the topic you are unintersted in anyway. So hats off to Scott for covering a wide-range of poker and including his buddies in the guest chapters. I find that very honorable, unlike someone else commented. Best of all, the book contains his strategies that have made him, and countless other players, successful poker players. If you don't find the book helpful, or think it's "useless", or even sent it back, then you're not understanding it's content well and not appreciating what the book can do for you.
Save Your Money.......2006-12-08
The publisher and author should be arrested for stealing. I would give this book Zero stars if that was an option.
Where's the Pressure?.......2006-11-12
The truth about this book lies somewhere between those early five star "publisher's fluff" reviews, and the guy who says the book is worthless. There is some good material in the book. I liked the discussion of the various software tools for online-poker. (Although much or all of this can be found on the internet.)
"Pressure Poker" is a technique or strategy that is currently a hot topic in the poker world. So you would think a book with this title would explore that topic rather throughly. Unfortunately there are only about 5 pages on that topic. So I felt the title was misleading.
People who have never played online poker before (a vast number of people) will find a lot of good intoductory material here. Those already in the know, may consider it to be filler. But I did find a few interesting ideas that I had not seen in print before. So I would not say the book is unoriginal.
Not a bad book. If it were priced comparably to other books of it's size, I could have given it 4 stars. But for the price, you can buy the great "Harrington on Holdem" and still have some change left...
