This book presents some fine instruction and some fine illustrative paintings. The best part, for me, is that Ms. Lewis shows many color mixtures used to achieve many of the specific colors shown in her paintings. You can learn from this book.

The book is NOT for children. It might appeal to a high school student with previous experience in lettering. The pages are FULL of detail and include MANY ideas for creative lettering. However, you need to be able to take the idea and then create the rest of the alphabet. For example, it shows a "graffiti style", but it only shows a few "letters". I would prefer to see the entire alphabet!
Instead of this book, I would recommend "Letter Art: Based on Alphabet Designs by Becky Higgins (Spiral-bound)". This book is produced by American Girl. This book offers a generous variety of "letter styles" with creative ideas for using the letters, such as greetings cards, gift tags, and scrapbooks. Each "letter style" is then shown in the full alphabet.

It would have been superbly useful to be able to look inside this book before I bought it so I could have saved myself the return shipping. I bought this book for my 10-year-old daughter who enjoys drawing and using interesting lettering styles. This book is WAY BUSY. Every page is full, full, full, from top to bottom, left to right--I found it very overwhelming. It does include neat details like drawing a word tower (writing a word vertically in tower form, keeping in mind perspective and vanishing point). However, the book was just so crowded and busy that it was hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. Definitely not recommended for someone who simply wants to leaf through it to look for a lettering style they'd like to use on a project--which I think the front cover implies you'd be able to do.
Usborne is a trusted and respected name in children's books, but I was disappointed by this one. Most children would find its format overwhelming, unable as they'd be to EASILY find what they want to draw.

This book by Jerry Whitaker requires a AAS in electronic Engeneering Technology and/or a understanding of TV, DVD Sattelitte, or Computers to grasp the techniques of digital decoders and encoders. Knowledge of Binary 1's and 0's in different size bytes is essential. Series to parallel conversion and digital to analog conversion is necessary to understand the manipulation of the serial data in the encoders transmission basics, and the compression and expansion of parallel data , with memory manipulation of the order of the frames of the raster. Digital Television Fundamentals:Design and Installation of Video and Audio Systems: by Michael Robin and Michel Poulin is an excellent prerequisite and follow up book to this one. The same requirements of digital data techniques are necessary... This book does not include the new decoder circuits used for transmitting and compressing the digital data, nor the circuitry of the monitors.
A good preview for newcomers to the field.......2000-03-27
The book covers many issues in DTV as well as TV and video in general. It seems that it was intended for those who would like to go wide but not deep into details. There are 4 pages describing general A/D & D/A, but only few short paragraphs for the Trellis Decoder and Data De- Interleaver of the ATSC standard. I expected to find in this book more about the new standards and less about the general background.
Broad Coverage of the Digital Television Revolution.......1999-02-26
Jerry Whitaker has been in the Radio and Television broadcast industry for many years, and has earned the highest awards in the field. This publication is his first forray into the newly emerging world of digital TV. The field is huge, much more complex and varied than the older world of television and radio transmission. In part the new complexity is due to the role of computers in generating and consuming broadcast imagery. More importantly, modern understanding of image compression and data brodcasting has added additional services and markets which much be addressed by the new system and it have become much more of an undertaking to cover all of these areas in one book.
Mr Whitaker does an admirable job of taking on this task. His summary of the political process leading up to the Grand Alliance is well worth reading for newcomers to the field as well as those who have been involved through the whole process. I found the clear description of the lineage of certain SMPTE standards to be quite useful.
The two chapters on applications and fundamental principles provide some crucial background for the novice in the field, but are probably better covered in books specifically on those areas. For instance, Blair's treatment of fundamentals in the "TV & Radio Engineer's Handbook" is a little more thorough, and would suit a class better than this book.
The section on digital coding is very well written; I'd reccomend this section for anyone considering implementing a digital broadcast facility. The compression chapter supports it well, though again as a textbook on compression one would do better with Jain's book, or possibly one of the many books on JPEG/MPEG.
I was least impressed with the section on production systems. In part, this is due to the rapid advancement in this area, but I found that the lack of discussion of emerging DV standards, some of the issues of image bandwidth, and the discussion of colorimetry to leave a bit to be desired. There is no better summary out there right now, but several authors are working on titles which should better address this area in the near future.
His sections on audio encoding, transmission, and recievers were all quite useful to me as a systems engineer. Specifically, the information on receivers would be useful for technical journalists and consumer sales and marketing professionals in the field, as well as engineers interested in the limitations and possiblities of new display technologies. This section in particular is well written and extremely accurate.
Finally, I found the references to be extremely well done; there is no existing collection of references as thorough as this one. The only minor shortcomming is in the index; the book could have benefitted from a larger index.
This book is a must-have for anyone involved in DTV/HDTV engineering. Despite a few minor shorcomings, it will be a valuable addittion to the practitioner's library.
A "must have" reference for DTV and DVD practitioners.......1998-11-11
With a forward by Joe A. Flaherty, this tome covers the history, fundamentals and applications of digital television including transceivers, displays, codecs, compression and measurement. Audio encoding/decoding as well as transmission and implementation issues relating to the ATSC DTV system have their own chapters. A reference section and glossary are included. As a valuable part of the sometimes spotty McGraw-Hill Video/Audio Engineering series, this is a "must have" for DTV and new media practitioners alike.

As a celebration leaves something to be desired.......2006-10-31
I think a "celebration" of Chester Gould's great strip should include at least one adventure of the Great Forties (his best decade, in my opinion). I appreciated the 1956 full adventure of Joe Period and Flattop Jr with the rather less interesting Ivy appendix, but why include only the last bit on another story (miss Egghead one)and focus on the grotesque Dick Tracy of the Sixties, when the strip was well past its prime? And why show improbable rehashes of Gould's villains by later authors and not original ones (though I appreciated the science-fictiony Pruneface story)?

MacIntosh & plugins needed to get full use of this book.......2005-01-02
In order to use the examples in this book you will need a MacIntosh. You will also have buy quite a number of third-party plugins. If you own a Mac and have money for plugins than this is a very helpful book.
But look elsewhere if you only have a Windows computer and want to use only Flash for video work.
You Get Your Money's Worth.......2003-12-23
An excellent Flash book. It goes through every aspect of the production process, from writing the script to exporting to videotape. It tells you how to prepare your Flash animations the right way, and provides information on the correct project size, frame rate, title & action safe guides, etc. for broadcast. This information is invaluable if you ever intend to submit your Flash animation to a festival or studio, and you have to export your movie out to videotape. I also found the interviews with seasoned Flash animators to be very insightful. You will not regret buying this book.

Janet Galore and Todd Kelsey lay it all out clearly and write in an easy to read style that doesn't skimp on details. The entire book is laden with terrific artwork and helpful screen grabs that support the text. Very undaunting for the visually inclined.
The sections on video exporting, and postproduction effects was particularly eye opening. this section alone cleared a lot uncertainty for me.
While this book won't make the reader a better Flash animator/designer, it most definately will make any level Animator or designer a more informed artist. It will open a lot of doors personaly and in the hands of a talented, creative person, change the ever evolving face of the Flash community indelibly.

I knew nothing... Really!!!! Never been to a shower - much less thrown a shower... and I got the most INCREDIBLE ideas from this book. It's diverse in the MULTITUDE ideas and extremely well laid-out. This allows you to pick-and-choose from the vast amount of info - to soot your and (especially) your BRIDE-TO-BE's taste's. Oh my gosh.. there are even quotes on what has happened to people before - so you won't be re-inventing the wheel ! Just awesome..
