Book Description
Some exceptional ceramic wares were produced in Thailand between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, not only in the famous kilns of Sukhothai and Sawankhalok, but also in many others, such as those at Kalong and Sankampaeng in the North of the country. Kenji Itoi, known in Japan as "Sosai", is both a scholar and a collector of Thai ceramics. His informative text is accompanied by 100 superb Plates. This book was originally published in Japanese as a catalogue in conjunction with an exhibition at the Toyama Museum of Fine Art in 1985. The text has been revised for the English edition, and 20 new illustrations are included.

The Keepers of Light: A Review.......2006-03-06
This book is the primary source of knowledge for those who are new to alternative photographic processes. It is a must read for those who wish to know the history of photography, and who wish to dive into alternative processes. It gives a brief history of each process, and then practical knowledge to aid the reader in accomplishing each process. I would recommend this book to all my colleagues and friends interested in photography.
I've had this book for years . . . .......2005-09-26
. . . And it looks it. I can't tell you how many times I've referred to this book. It is one of the most - if not the most - useful book for nonsilver photographic processes I've ever had and I have quite a collection of this type of book.
I don't think you can go wrong owning a copy of this volume.
The keepers of light.......2001-12-19
This is a great book it help me gain notion on the history of photography and alo show me ways to do photography the old way
Worth the Wait!.......2000-01-29
Well, after asking endless questions to some of the "so called" self-acclaimed "experts" in the field of wet plate photography; Crawford's book was a breath of fresh air. I only wish that I could have come across this book early in my search. Instead I had to wade through BBS systems with adults who like to dress up and play "war" (i.e., the Civil War). With this book you will be able to bypass all of the fruitless searches you will have if you ask present day practitioners, who do not want to share the process (or are more likely unknowledgeable themselves). Save yourself the problems, efforts and misinformation. Buy this book!
The best resource for non-silver photographic printmaking.......1999-02-19
I lost my first copy and just bought another. Learn the history and the how-to's of several non-silver printmaking methods. If you're interested in these processes, this book will give you an excellent overview and get you started on making your own prints.

Transformer Guidebook 2.......2005-01-05
This book has some great details, with full color pictures on glossy paper. It give the bios, abilities, strengths and weakness of all the Autobots and Decepticon from the beginning and other Transformers I have never seen from the original that came out in the late 1980's from Marvel Comics and Hasbro.
I wish they had put this book into one instead of two volumes and if possible in hard back cover like the Transformers "The Ultimate Guide".
If you like the Transformers from the 1980's, I think you will like this guidebook.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing reference! May leave you a soulless husk if you read it all the way through..........2007-01-09
I bought this book when I was hired to AC for a project on equipment I had never worked with before. For one of those, "Holly crap! I agreed to do a job I only know how to do part of!" moments, this book is great. Every question I could think of was answered thoroughly and I mean THOROUGHLY. If you want to learn exactly what the responsibilities of an Assistant Camera Person are and how best to execute them read this book! If you are a working AC and want an easy to read, text-book style reference this is it.
The Best Book On The Subject. PERIOD........2005-12-03
Nothing comes close to David Elkins' book. It's that simple. This is the best, most complete book on the job of the camera assistant. PERIOD. If you are new to the job of the camera assistant, this book is an absolute must have. If you are a seasoned "vet" who has years of experience working on motion picture sets, again, this book is an absolute must have. Elkins' total description of every aspect of the AC's job is so consise, it's like a classroom in a book. Loaded with every conceivable diagram and chart, and covering every motion picture camera currently being used, this book goes well beyond your typical "job description" type tome.
The bonus materials alone make this book invaluable. Along with the companion website, the reader has vast amounts of precious material available for when the job calls for it...label templates, charts, manufacturer links and contacts, the list goes on and on and on. The best part is the writing style is clear and informative, almost like Elkins himself is teaching you as you go.
Look no further than this book. It's all here.
The Best Technical Book on Moviemaking.......2005-11-29
David Elkins's The Camera Assistant's Manual, Fourth Edition is the best technical book around, and one of the best books on movies, period.
Dave manages to cover every aspect of an assistant's job, no matter how obscure or infrequently encountered. But the completeness is only one aspect which recommends it to any aspiring or working cinematographer.
Written in a clear, conversational manner, Dave manages to demystify both the jargon and the sometimes strange job of an assistant. His accounts of procedure for both first and second assistants clarify what we in the business call "industry standard": the accepted, professional way of conducting yourself and doing a job. Outside of a job on a
Hollywood set, it is nearly impossible to learn these classic, time-saving routines. And unless you've been a pro in the business, you're not going to know about such things as the relative merits of Magliner and Rubbermaid carts for hauling equipment.
The book covers the general characteristics of film, cameras, and lenses in such a way as to give a general technical education. Dave also gives a valuable overview of the camera department and its place in film production overall.
What many readers will find most useful are the sections on troubleshooting, the diagrams and threading patterns of every currently used camera, and the wealth of forms and lists to organize the on-set work.
I've tried to give a good idea of what the book covers, but it contains much, much more. I've been using The Camera Assistant's Manual since the first edition. This is the biggest and the best version. I only wish that, when I started as a camera assistant, I had had access to such a clear, helpful book.
Beginner to Pro.......2005-10-17
The 4th Edition of the Camera Assistant's Manual by focal press author David Elkins is a must have for the beginner as well as the seasoned pro. From how to set up a darkroom, to threading diagrams on all "in use" cameras, to lifelong useful tables and charts, this edition has it all.
Must Have Manual.......2005-09-27
The Camera Assistant's Manual is a must have reference book for both beginners and experienced professionals in the camera department. If you are a beginner, this manual will teach you all of the basics as well as the advanced details of camera assisting. Although not a substitute for actual experience, author David Elkins also coaches you on how to act efficiently and professionally on a set. This can save you countless embarrassing blunders on your "first barbeque." But before learning all of the AC's duties, the reader is introduced to the basics of cinematography and a complete overview of the camera department. This is extremely helpful - allowing the beginner to understand the "big picture" first. If you are an experienced professional, Elkins gives you hundreds of tips and suggestions that will add to your knowledge base and help your job go smoothly. This 4th edition contains the most complete and up to date camera diagrams, tables, and formulas of any single reference source. Imagine your relief when you have to load and thread a new camera for the first time. The Camera Assistant's Manual is worth it's weight in gold.
Book Description
Fuelled by an explosive mix of make-up, costumes, and attitude, Kiss burst on the music scene over thirty years ago and has become a rock institution. The band has sold more than eighty million records, has broken every concert attendance record set by Elvis Presley and the Beatles, and stands behind the Beatles alone in number of gold records in history. Kiss: Pledge Allegiance to the State of Rock and Roll features an in-depth interview with founding members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, and also focuses on the special relationship the band enjoys with its audience. (Kiss fans offer their own anecdotes.) Paul Elliot traces the origins of the band’s music through the 1970s, when they were the biggest band in the world, the 1980s when they took off their world-famous war paint, and into the 1990s, when they came back bigger and badder to become the world’s number one touring band.
Customer Reviews:
Complete waste of money.......2006-01-03
DO NOT buy this book. It is pure crap. It does not provide information about each song, rather just this guys opinion. Any information that is passed off as being actual "stories behind the songs" was stolen from other books and magazine articles.
Do yourself a favor and don't buy this.
Where is the no star button?.......2005-09-20
Didn't Rick Derringer play guitar in All American Man? No mention of that here. This book is just one guys view of what he thinks the songs are about. There aren't many actual facts on what the members were really thinking when they wrote their songs. This book is a total waste of time and money. I am so glad I didn't pay cover price for it. True KISS fans need to just stay away from this book.
Grade: F
Utter rubbish.......2003-04-16
Like anyone cares what the author thinks. Utter [bunk.] You can at least read the real stories behind the songs [online].
well............2003-03-21
The stories behind the songs? Not really. It's really a book about what a handful of musicians THOUGHT about Kiss songs. I have it. It is a must for Kiss fans. The interviews are pretty standard Kiss fare - nothing really new. But if you're like me - and you collect every 'slick' book published about the band, you sort of have to get it. Better options are available - "Kiss: the Early Years" and "The Complete Touring History"
Avoid Even If You're A Die-Hard Fan.......2003-03-12
I have to agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer that said the only worthwhile part of this book are the interviews, but that's not saying much. I bought this book thinking I would get, as advertised, "the stories behind the songs". Not only is this completely false, but I'm not sure the author knows anything about KISS at all. All he did was listen to the song lyrics, regurgitate them back with some loose interpretation of what they're supposed to mean, and that's your story behind the song. No other insight, research, or nothing. If you want a good insightful look at KISS, I highly recommend "KISS Alive Forever: A Touring History". Don't waste your money on this ..., even if you're a diehard fan.
Book Description
There are treasures to be found...
They're hidden in city and state parks, outside of nearby buildings, alongside hiking trails and exercise routes, and even in local neighborhoods. This is geocaching, an adventure-based game involving intentionally hidden treasures, i.e. caches, and a standard handheld global positioning system (GPS) unit. The idea behind geocaching is for people to set up caches all over the world, and to then share the GPS coordinates of the caches via the Internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches, and once found, a cache usually provides its visitor with a wide variety of rewards available for the taking. Authored by a renowned expert on GPS usage and the editors of Geocaching.com, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Geocaching is a comprehensive yet easy to understand guide for getting started and having fun with geocaching.
Customer Reviews:
Good to get you started........2007-08-31
We bought the book because we had never heard of geocaching until we stumbled upon it on the internet. It has a lot of useful information to get you started. We have gone out a couple of times so far and have enjoyed the hunt. Some of the info in the book we will probably never use. If I had to do it over again I probably would have bought Geocaching for Dummies, since we have used those books before and like the way they are written.
anal retentive Amazon.......2007-05-10
I didn't receive it because Amazon refused to ship UPS or USPS and insisted on using DHL, Whom does not deliver to my residence
The Navigator.......2007-04-10
This guide takes you through the basics of geocaching and beyond. You'll learn all about navigating, using maps, and GPS.
Worth the Money.......2007-03-24
I feel that this book is worth the money I paid for it. For someone that is just starting out, it answers questions in terms that you can relate to.I give it a Four because I don't have anything to base a Five on at this time.
Excellent Introduction to the Sport of GeoCaching!.......2007-03-08
I was looking for a quick yet thorough introduction to GeoCaching, and found that, and more, in The Complete Idiot's Guide! (Guess that tells you something about me, huh?) TCIG actually covers a good deal more than the basics, while responsibly encouraging the development of additional orienteering/navigation skills beyond GPS. I recommend this for anyone interested in learning more for enjoyment or application.

Book Description
A Few Marbles Left contains more than 75 essays, rants, news bloopers and observations about television news, as well as serious considerations on improving the craft, who's the top journalist in America, the inside story behind the best news cassette ever shot, and the real issue of the public good versus news excess. Corcoran is by turns outrageous, poignant, hilarious and maddening, but always truthful and never dull. "This book could only be written by someone out of the business for good," he says. "Anyone as honest as I am would be fired immediately by one of the boneheads running it. That being said, I'm always open to offers of work that don't involve selling my conscience or heavy lifting." John Corcoran spent twenty years in television as an on-air entertainment reporter and critic in Washington, D.C., Boston, and Los Angeles. Then he got out of the business and and the real fun began. A Few Marbles Left started as a series of missives to the legendary TV newletter ShopTalk, where his "Pesky Gadabout" letters drew praise, condemnation and, most frequently, laughter. Writing from Los Angeles, "a city where anyone with a set of car keys and a 'Darwin Was Wrong' tattoo can hijack a television newscast for hours at a time," Corcoran has traveled the country observing local news markets from San Louis Obispo, CA, to Portland, ME. Corcoran skewers TV news with outrageous comments like, "I think it's time that the public accepted the reality that TV news is no longer fact-driven. Facts impede flow, cause delays in getting to live shots, confuse the viewer, lead to unwanted litigation and are frequently hard to prove." A Few Marbles Left is a mandatory read for anyone who is in the business, who has been in the business or who watches television news. They will recognize the characters and the calamities, and the occasions when TV rises above them and does the extraordinary work it is capable of doing, but so rarely does. More importantly, anyone contemplating a career in television will be well served by Corcoran's cautionary tales and lessons learned. "If I can keep just one person from making a lifetime mistake and working in TV news for the wrong reasons, well, I'm pretty sure my publisher will be upset. No I'm hoping to influence thousands of bright young people, get them to change majors and become attorneys, doctors, con men or dropouts - plus make a few bucks for the publisher and myself at the same time."
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious and true.......2003-12-17
'MARBLES' is wry, dry, ridiculous, and dead-on. It takes a miracle to make me laugh out loud, but Corcoran succeeded several times. A couple of times, he actually gave me cramps.
If you want to know about how much fun television used to be in the 'good old days', read this book.
Truth with Humor.......2002-07-14
I've been in TV a long time myself and after reading "A Few Marbles Left," I wish I'd written it myself. One Anonymous (read cowardly) critic posted here saying "Corcoran is all over the place." Yo, dude, they're ESSAYS. The same could be said of Dave Barry, and Corcoran's humor reminds me of Barry at times. But he also has serious points to make, and makes them seriously. What comes through the most is his passion and his sense of loss at what TV news has become. Anyone who's actually cared about TV news during the course of his or her career, would not attempt to dismiss Corcoran's heartfelt and superbly entertaining effort. Seems to me like someone has an agenda of his own--perhaps no one would publish his book?
The tragedy is that television news has let down the country with its blind obediance to the bottom line. Corcoran understands that and mourns its loss not with a boring book filled grim reminders and dull statistics, but more like an Irish wake, with humor, terrific writing, and an occasional thought or turn of phrase that will bring a tear to your eye.
Corcoran says he's out of TV news now, which is a shame. The same can't be said for our anonymous Sacamento carper. I think TV is better off without his narrowmindedness.
I just wish everyone in the industry would read "A Few Marbles left." Maybe then, TV news could come to the realization of what an ongoing tragic farce it has become
...and the few marbles are widely scattered........2002-07-04
I'm a former radio/TV journalist of 20 years -- the same as the author -- and agree with many of his points about the state of TV news: the superficiality, the "star system" for anchors and anchorettes, the "If it bleeds, it leads" mentality, and all the rest. However, his writing is all over the map. Corcoran often departs on flights of self-indulgent fancy before getting back to whatever main point he is making at the moment. As a hard-core newswriter from the "old school," I find it ponderous and, despite his completely valid criticisms, not worth the effort.
A FEW LAUGHS LEFT.......2002-01-04
I'm an old timer journalist with lots of sense of humour just like John Corcoran but with one big difference: my name is Antonio Brasil and I am from Brazil.
Enough for puns!
Enjoyed most of the book. Had great laughs with my colleagues in the business and am writing an article recommending this book in one of Brazil's most important media watch sites...very soon.
It is really incredible to see how there are things in common between the brazilian news tv business and its american counterpart. Mr. Corcoran's refined sense of humour is only a sweetener to the hard truths of today's news business. It is serious talk among some good jokes.
Of course, foreign readers might miss some of the details about local news shows and talents but it is well worthwhile.
Great Stuff! It is also a great incentive to write my own.
