Book Description
Now in paperback, an "insightful" (San Francisco Bay Guardian) look at tourism and nostalgia from the bestselling author and art critic. In Lucy R. Lippard's On the Beaten Track, essays on cultural criticism, anthropology, and community activism are interwoven to examine how tourism sites are conceived and represented, and how they transform their surroundings. Called "stimulating" and "valuable" by Newsday, On the Beaten Track is now available in paperback for the first time. With her characteristic breadth of insight and critical eye, Lippard explores the act of being a tourist in one's own home, the role of advertising and photography in defining place, antique shops as populist museums, and the commodification of indigenous cultures. She discusses the political economies of leisure spaces; the tourist's fascination with tragic destinations such as the sites of massacres, nuclear weapons tests, and Holocaust memorials; and our willingness to let national parks and heritage sites define nature and history. Finally, the author that critic Andrew Ross calls "the most sure-footed tour guide you could hope for" surveys how artists are responding to the environmental, cultural, and political issues surrounding contemporary tourism.
Customer Reviews:
An Interesting, Challenging Study of Art and Tourism.......2002-05-08
On The Beaten Track is a collection of essays on the overlapping themes of art, tourism and culture. Lucy Lippard discusses many aspects of modern tourism's impact on local landscapes and people. She places special emphasis on areas she is familiar with --New Mexico and Maine. She is a perceptive and original cultural critic, introducing the reader to alternative interpretations of everyday sites. It has occurred to me in recent years that modern society increasingly resembles a giant theme park or museum, with everything fenced off and labelled for the convenience of conventional, middle class Americans (or Asians or Europeans, as the case may be). This is the sort of thing that Lippard explores in On The Beaten Track.I found her observations on museums especially thought-provoking. Are museums good for the arts or are they elitist institutions that dictate the meaning of art to the masses? This is the kind of question the book raises, without providing any simple answers. While I found the subject matter fascinating, I didn't find the book especially easy to read. While this isn't necessarily bad (not all books are meant to be easy), I find Lippard's style of writing a bit abstruse. In places she quotes one artist or writer after the other (or mentions examples of their works) without tying the various threads together. The style is perhaps analagous to a collage (I believe the author is an artist), and some readers will probably love it. More left-brained readers (e.g. me) may find this a bit perplexing, but we can still appreciate the many important questions and insights brought out in these essays.

Book Description
What does it take for the average guy in high school to get some love? A lot of luck and the irrefutable hand of fate! Myung-Ho apparently is blessed with both as one of his school's most popular Modonnas (the daughter of the local mafia boss) is dead set on making him her boyfriend. But is his destiny really set in stone already? Would his destiny be strong enough to withstand the constant love-games and gestures by the adorable "girl next door?"
Book Description
"An extraordinary accomplishment. . . . A remarkable book that will be of great value to people who feel isolated, alienated and overwhelmed by the circumstances of their lives."-Hubert Selby, Jr., author of Last Exit to Brooklyn
"[Stahl] is a better-than-Burroughs virtuoso."-Thomas Mallon, The New Yorker
"Original, appalling, indelible picture of a man trying to swim and drown at the same time. Stahl has nerve, heart, a language of his own and a ghastly, riotous humor."-Tobias Wolff, author of This Boy's Life
"Permanent Midnight is one of the most harrowing and toughest accounts ever written in this century about what it means to be a junkie in America, making Burroughs look dated and Kerouac appear as the nose-thumbing adolescent he was."-Booklist
A searing confessional infused with the darkest humor, Permanent Midnight chronicles the opiated abyss of a Hollywood screenwriter and his formidable climb into sobriety.
Made into a major motion picture starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, Permanent Midnight is revered by critics and an ever-growing cult of devoted readers as one of the most compelling contemporary memoirs.
Jerry Stahl was born in Pittsburgh. He is author of the novels Perv: A Love Story, Plainclothes Naked and I, Fatty, the paperback edition of which will appear in 2005. He currently lives in Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
Accuracy..........2006-02-17
If you don't want to shoot up for years and figure it out on your own, please read this book. If you wonder why your genius-kid is out shooting up, please read this book. If you think you might go and shoot up, please, please, please read this book (instead). It is a 100% accurate portrayal of the highly intelligent, not to mention highly creative, mind under the influence of a completely destructive upbringing and eventually a completely enslaving opiate habit. You will see the hypocrisy, both short and long term, any addict must justify or at least fog out in order to continue the cycle (a cycle most people will never understand). You will, after more or less going through it with Jerry (what, with the friendly and familiar choice of words, stomach-dropping descriptions and gut bursting humor), reach the end of this book with a thoughtful and understanding tear in your eye and, if you were lucky enough to have read it instead of having to go through it (which usually goes down without the $6000 a week to spend), a new and broader understanding of people you might have otherwise summed up and dismissed (at a less informed time of your life). Take interest in a problem which affects our families as well as ourselves. Please read this heart-felt masterpiece.
My new diet.......2005-08-04
After reading this book it sure soured me on McDonald's. And I live in Phoenix.
Permanent Desperation.......2005-07-31
Surprisingly, I found this book to be an excellent read. Stahl's extremely honest and no-holds-back dipiction of his "arrival" into Hollywood and his "departure" into heroin addiction, was incredibly exciting and moving. I've read 'em all (regarding addiction) and this is right up there on top. As a recovering addict myself, I find it hard to find an author who is genuinely honest of where the drugs and alcohol take them, and just how hard it is to get back, without having ego replace honesty. Hats off to Stahl for being able to accomplish the far and few between.
Beautiful loser.......2005-07-25
I thought I would hate this book because the guy seemed like some rich Hollywood type who romanticized his bout with drugs. The saving grace, was that the book is completely hilarious.
Good Start, Medium Middle, Slow Finish.......2004-05-14
Like many drug memoirs, Permanent Midnight starts off with a great premise: man is young, man is poor, man meets drugs, man falls in love with drugs, man gets sudden rush of money, man takes too much drugs, man learns to take too much drugs and still make money, man gets tired of taking too much drugs and making too much money, man moves to Arizona.
And like many drug memoirs the end is grueling and slow. Near the end of the book it seems the writer is thinking more about his paycheck than his work. But I would definetly buy this book just for the first 80%.

Customer Reviews:
Great For Flutists.......2007-09-29
This book is informative, interesting and a great aid for a beginner, and perhaps for more advanced players, as well. It is full of very nteresting historical information and illustrations for wooden and bamboo flutes.
As I am a rank beginner, I can only speak from that frame of reference. But I definitely think you should give it a try, if you are interested in playing the flute.
I wish I had this book when I was playing in school.......2007-09-10
This is the kind of book that should be required in band classes. It was nice to see some of the things you could do to repair the instrument, how to select an instrument, different types of flutes.
Excellent source for the beginner.......2007-08-13
This guide to flute history, mechanics and playing technique is an excellent source for the beginner. It is written using understandable concepts that make it possible to visualize what is being taught. If you have not yet begun taking formal lessons with a teacher, this book will give you a good start.
Wonderful introduction.......2007-06-27
I knew nothing about the flute when I bought this book. I was pleased to not only learn a lot about the history and variety of flutes, but also to successfully purchase, assemble and begin to play a flute based on the author's clear and competent guidance. When I found a flute teacher, she was also impressed with the range of information the book presents, and added it to her recommended list. I am less than halfway through the book, so I can't comment on the more advanced sections, except to say that they appear to cover all aspects of music theory.
Happy Flautist.......2007-03-31
What a great book. Well laid out, clearly stated and very practical. I look forward to following it in the path to improving my enjoyment of flute playing.Thank you Mark

Welcome Kakuro.......2006-11-07
There are an equal number of Easy, Medium and Hard puzzles. There are also instructions and tips if you have never played before. If you are like me and have been doing Cross Sums for years, you will enjoy the medium and hard puzzles. Now I'm waiting for Extreme Kakuro!!
A good introduction to Kakuro.......2006-11-02
This was my first Kakuro book. It got me up and running quickly.
The Official Waste of Paper.......2006-08-31
Book is too small and bulky. Hard to keep open while solving puzzles. Gridwise, all of the puzzles were very small throughout the entire book. Should be geared toward kids, not adults. Not challenging at all.
Lacking challenge and consistency.......2006-05-19
Most of the puzzles in this book were satisfying. Three of the latter "Medium" puzzles are irritating: two lack unique solutions (for example, the answer key has "3 1" immediately above "1 3," which is impossible to logically distinguish from "1 3" directly above "3 1") and one is actually invalid (the answer key has "2 1 2" as the solution to one "word," and there's no other way to solve it, as the three cells in question must add up to 5.) The other 147 puzzles in this collection are free of such errors. My only other grumble is about the difficulty; I did not notice a significant difference between the difficulty of the medium puzzles and the first 40 hard puzzles, though the last 10 hard puzzles were a significant step up from the first 40. Even the hardest puzzles are not as difficult as those in the Virgin books. I'd recommend this to people who are looking for a first experience with Kakuro, but those with experience with other publishers might want to look elsewhere for additional challenge.
Excellent starting point.......2006-04-17
I made the mistake of starting out with /Kakuro for Dummies/. While that's an okay book if you want a random assortment of challenging Kakuro puzzles, it is a TERRIBLE beginner's book. All the /Dummies/ book did was make me feel like a complete idiot.
How is this book different? Simple. The puzzles are carefully arranged to teach you certain skills as you go along. Rather than saying, "here are the rules, and here's a billion random puzzles to solve," Tim Parker has picked an excellent selection of Kakuro puzzles with a nice progression to them. It is clear a lot of thought went into how new players will approach this book. Playing through the puzzles in order will indirectly teach you a great deal about how to solve Kakuro better and faster.
Good teachers will teach you by example, through experience, and by building confidence. Bad teachers (the Dummies book) will throw a bunch of facts at you and toss you into the deep end to fend for yourself. I prefer the confidence-building approach, and this book does an excellent job at indirectly teaching you to play Kakuro.
Highly recommended for newbies and my fellow victims of bad Kakuro books.
