In Particles + Waves with Plausibility, artist Dennis Balk employs various forms of visual expression—from abstract, digitally created images to straight photography, not missing many steps in between—to explore the relationship between models for subatomic particles, designed by the artist, and the day-to-day life of human beings. Balk shows us his models as they take on shape, form, and personality, displaying patterns of behavior similar to that of human culture. Just as we pass on elements of our cultural identity through social interactions, each particle has a specified code, formed from its physical qualities, that passes from receptor to receptor to other particles in subatomic space. Using scientific methods such as nanotechnologies—engineering processes that operate at a molecular scale—Balk confronts the possibility of the visual description of subatomic material (material that, even with the greatest of modern technologies, cannot actually be seen). As Balk explores the boundaries between science and culture, Particles + Waves with Plausibility sets us back in time in North Africa, beginning with early Egypt and the Giza Plateau. From these often-mythologized cultures and histories, the scale then closes in—taking us forward in time, closer to specificity of place, and into the limits of contemporary scientific knowledge. Balk bounces from photographs depicting everyday human existence to images describing the dramas of subatomic material, leaving the viewer to wonder: Is this connection a fiction, created by Balk's designs, or are our mysteries intimate with the mysteries of modern science? While we may never answer these questions with certainty, Balk contends that "the process frames [this] science, which becomes a narrative that facilitates a kind of reality." The maverick visual philosopher, Dennis Balk has a produced a new body of work, unlike his earlier multi-disciplinary art, theater and cultural projects, it is self-contained as a book for mass consumption. On first glance, it appears to be a traditional "coffee table book", which usually functions as a passive sign within the reader's ambient of décor, delight and good taste. This book is anything but...Balk has subverted this conventional structure and demands that the reader takes a serious step outside. His current work/data asks us to presume a leap of faith in exploring uncharted aesthetic territory and actively engage in a multifarious visual narrative. One can scan the surface of this tome, but that would be a waste. This is not an easy exercise in image consumption; we must dig deeper. The demands will not go unrewarded.

The trip that Dennis immerses us into is both hyper-rational and a spaced-out visionary quest. Attempting to make visible relationships between such disparate elements as art, science and daily life, Balk has graphically charted the behaviors, forms and transformations of his 3-d sub-atomic particle models (they are spectacular fictions) and slyly intimates that similar forms and behavior exist and/or contradict human life and the physical world. Traversing seamlessly between pictorial images of the ancient Giza plateau, scientific models of his virtual creations, daily life and popular culture on the back streets of Cairo as well as interspersed texts and snapshots of Balk's daily sci-fi reality, the reader is led to wonder whether the connections Balk describes are purely fictional or whether ancient and contemporary cultural codes are indeed intimate with the mysteries of contemporary science.

Balk is a "big picture" man. A bulky question implied by his method of science fiction/cultural critique seems to be whether all of this "information" was codified by the "big bang" millions of years ago? And, are we just endlessly playing back the echoes of the cultural dawn?

If Syd Mead, one of Balk's idols, has consistently provided us with mind-blowing illustrations as a "visual futurist" and P. K. Dick, another Balk anti-hero, has given us the sprawling narratives of the "future past", Dennis presents us with a much more intricate and highly nuanced picture of the stranger than sci-fi "future present".

          In High Contrast, Sharon Willis examines the dynamic relationships between racial and sexual difference in Hollywood film from the 1980s and 1990s. Seizing on the way these differences are accentuated, sensationalized, and eroticized on screen—most often with little apparent regard for the political context in which they operate—Willis restores that context through close readings of a range of movies from cinematic blockbusters to the work of the new auteurs, Spike Lee, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino.
          Capturing the political complexity of these films, Willis argues that race, gender, and sexuality, as they are figured in the fantasy of popular film, do not function separately, but rather inform and determine each other’s meaning. She demonstrates how collective anxieties regarding social difference are mapped onto big budget movies like the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series, Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, Thelma and Louise, Terminator 2, and others. Analyzing the artistic styles of directors Lynch, Tarantino, and Lee, in such films as Wild at Heart, Pulp Fiction, and Do the Right Thing, she investigates how these interactions of difference are linked to the production of specific authorial styles, and how race functions for each of these directors, particularly in relation to gender identity, erotics, and fantasy.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A digital image synthesizer (DIS), especially useful as a counter targeting signal repeater, (i.e, for synthesizing the characteristic echo signature of a pre-selected target) is reported. The DIS has a digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) and associated circuitry, including digital tapped delay lines and a modulator in each delay line to impose both amplitude and frequency modulation in each line. A unique property of the digital image synthesizer is its ability to synthesize false targets using wideband chirp signals of any duration. To generate the target, the user can program the target extent (number of taps) and the amplitude and Doppler frequency of each range Doppler cell within the image. The system on a chip uses a scalable CMOS technology that increases the bandwidth and sensitivity of such a repeater over prior analog based systems. The application specific integrated circuit reduces the noise of the repeated signal, reduces the size and cost of such a system, and permits real time alteration of operating parameters, permitting rapid and adaptive shifting among different types of targets to be synthesized. A scan path test capability is also included to allow intra-chip signal analysis and verification.

                              This book was great when I got it...10 years ago.

                              Although Mr. Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia is enjoyable to read, it is extremely outdated and there needs to be a new edition. For readers looking for some info on their favorite classic movie star, chances are you'll probably find a bio on him/her. But for recent actors, no luck.

                              Note when ordering that there is only one version of this book - and it was first printed in 1994. And this is not apparent from the writeup on Amazon. I already had this book - but recently ordered two copies assuming it was a new version. I was very disappointed that it was the same book I already had. The fact that the book is so old and missing all movies and information from the past 10 years makes this not as worthwhile as one would expect from Maltin.

                              As a confirmed habitual movie watcher, this book was a much-welcomed addition to my library. Actually, it never made it to my library, as I have it next to my favorite TV chair, right under the TV Guide. I've never seen anything else with such concise thumbnail bios, just the facts. Yes, many stars are not included, such a book would be impossible to pick up. I did miss some oldies such as Marge & Gower Champion. The content is 5-stars, but I deducted 1-star for the book's dire need of updating: additions such as Chris Cooper, Matthew McConaughey, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam, etc. But I wouldn't want to be the one to decide who gets removed to include these new additions!

                              Leonard has done a great job on this. Tasty tidbits on the stars of yesterday and today. I have only one complaint, there are many of the old stars he did not include. Too bad.

                              Initially about a year ago I made the mistake of following the other reviews which panned the book, and did not buy it. I then gradually realized that some of my favorite short bios on IMDB.com were excerpted from Maltin's Encyclopedia. Of course at that point I bought it. There are few, if any, other volumes that quickly give you the sum-up and low-down on 2,000 movie industry people. To say the book has errors and omissions is to me ridiculous...a perfect book would cost a few thousand dollars. Meanwhile, IMDB.com is available as a backstop for searching out hundreds of thousands of details, which wouldn't fit in a reasonably sized volume anyway. Generally speaking, I've gone wrong far more often in rejecting something based on a review or an opinion about a book, movie, etc., than in consuming something recommended -- you can always bail out if a recommender was wrong.

                              I originally purchased this book when I was editing acrostic puzzles, as a reference book, but I find myself referring to it frequently even now, although no longer edit puzzles. It contains "career profiles of more than 2,000 actors and filmmakers, past and present" arranged alphabetically. It also contains "filmographies" for each actor. I'd recommend this book highly.

                                    I have been playing bridge for about 3 months and found myself getting into trouble during bidding. My partner would make a cue bid, or a reverse and I wouldn't quite get what was going on. The books I had learned basic bridge from didn't cover these intermediate bridge topics. I knew I needed to improve my bidding in order to improve beyond beginner.

                                    This is a great book for that purpose. You won't find a lot of fluff and puff. The chapters are short and to the point. There are dozens of hands throughout to show different examples of how to bid, how to overbid and how to respond. Unlike other books, wherein the authors hold themselves out as the ultimate experts, this book brings forth opinions from the great bridge masters. It presents these often conflicting opinions objectively and makes recommendations, but in the end letting the reader adapt these opinions to his or her playing style.

                                    This book will benefit beginner and intermediate players who play on the internet or at a duplicate bridge club. I highly recommend this title to anyone learning bridge or as a gift to your regular partner!

                                    I teach a small weekly class at the local bridge club on standard bidding. When I came across this book I ordered a couple copies in case any of my students would be interested. Since then I've ordered about 20 of them for students as well as other club members. I can't keep them on hand!

                                    I'm ordering another 5 today. Frankly, I'm not overly impressed by the book, but the students/players LOVE it. I've heard them rave about the book so many times.

                                    As we all struggle to understand a new language, it is refreshing to find a lucid explanation that. while accomplishing its goal, does it without punditry. Adding in a sense of humor, along with clear examples and intelligent comments, makes this an excellent place to master the fundimentals of the Yellow Card System.
