Book Description
Robert Rauschenberg, one of the most prolific and influential artists of the postwar period, has created an astonishing variety of works during a career spanning more than fifty years. To illuminate the meaning of Rauschenberg's art and the reasons behind his artistic choices, Robert Mattison in this book focuses closely on a small selection of the artist's projects. Mattison offers an interpretation of Rauschenberg's output that is both original and uniquely insightful, based on extensive research and first-hand observation of the artist at work in his studio. Like Rauschenberg's own work, the book ranges across a variety of disciplines. Mattison relates the artist's output to the visual arts, politics, technology, dance, urban theory, and other intriguing contemporary issues. The book examines Rauschenberg's working process, the effect of his dyslexia on his art, his seminal Combine paintings of the 1950s, fascination with the "space race," and collaboration with well-known choreographer Trisha Brown. A final chapter explores the art Rauschenberg exhibited in Chile during the dangerous and repressive rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet.
Customer Reviews:
A decent effort.......2006-08-04
This study of Rauschenberg is a good source of biographical information, and will be useful to those new to the artist's work, but for those wanting to pursue the more complex theoretical implications of Rauschenberg's practice, they would be advised to look elsewhere. This is because Mattison's study takes the form of a relatively conventional monograph, and it doesnt really pay much attention to some of the most interesting literature on the artist by scholars like Leo Steinberg or Rosalind Krauss. Furthermore, it treats Rauschenberg as though he were a canonised "Old Master"- this is obvious from the introduction, where Mattison treats us to a detailed description of the artist's custom-built studio in Florida- the implication being that Rauschenberg is a kind of modern-day Rubens, turning out masterpieces with the help of his eager assistants. However, Rauschenberg's work (especially his early, seminal work), seriously calls into question notions of genius, authenticity, originality, and the like- all those sacred cows of art history. But Mattison avoids these thorny questions, mainly because I think that the book is aimed at a more mainstream audience.
There is some interesting stuff here- the section on Rauschenberg's dyslexia, and how it could help us shed light on his silkscreen printing, was good, as was the section on the development of "lateral thinking" in psychology, which was contemporaneous with Rauschenberg's emergence, and ties in nicely with some of his concerns, i.e. getting away from fixed, preconceived ideas and logical (or "vertical") thinking. Also, the section on New York's urban development in the late 50s was also enlightening with regard to Rauschenberg's combines from that time. There is also a lot of information about the artist's "Stoned Moon" book, produced during his trip to Cape Canaveral in 1969.
Overall, though, its a book to sift information from, rather than to sit down and enjoy- its relatively conventional nature means that its not an especially exciting read, although those new to the artist (and art history generally) may think differently.
patchwork collage of the mind.......2000-04-30
Reflections of an artist mind unleashed, Rauschenberg's images of political and social issues are portayed through scattered images and expressive paint strokes. His use of mixed media portrays an intensity between his paintings and the connection expressed in his life and his surroundings.

Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money........2002-10-11
I find it hard to believe that anyone found this book inspirational, insightful or instructional. I was looking for more design information and insight, and the description of this book represented it as such. The book jacket states "practical advice on design and technique". What little there is I found of no value. It also states "informed commentary". Again, I did not find any of the author's comments that accompany the pictures insightful or informed. They are minimally descriptive at best. The majority of artists are from the UK and not representative of wide variety of design. This book is out of print and I can understand why. I found it used at a lower rate and still feel that I wasted my money. There are many other books out there that have truly lovely and imaginative designs that would be worth imitating and considering for a commission design. These positive and glowing reviews and the book jacket description go beyond deceptive - they are simply untrue. I understand why the "review guidelines" discourage criticizing other reviews listed here. I bought this book based on the reviews I read here and feel they were very misleading and question their authenticity. Buyer beware!
Beautiful.......2000-03-19
This book is absolutely gorgeous, and it is truly an inspiration to artists in any media, not only in stained glass. The projects are a little ambitious for beginners and hobbyists like me, but the beautiful photographs and ideas give me something to aspire to. An invaluable tool.
terrific photos.......2000-03-08
Definitely worth getting. This is a book that you will find yourself going back to over and over again. Plenty of fresh and interesting ideas.
Loved it.......1999-12-04
I borrowed this book from the library, and now I'm just going to have to buy it. I'm just getting started in stained glass and I must say the work featured in this book is truly inspirational. Buy it and you will look at it over and over again.
A most inspirational stained glass design book.......1999-08-09
I highly recommend this book for a stained glass artist or anyone seeking to commission a stained glass piece for their home. The glass is painted, etched, & blown to create many stunning & unique effects.
Design themes include marine life, birds, animals, people, floral, religious & abstract. The book is filled with gorgeous color photos with captions for each window listing title, artist, size, & the glass types used.
I fell in love with a screen entitled "Waves" & one featuring sandblasted water nymphs. I also enjoyed another circular piece featuring the tree of life & flame. A huge abstract biblical window took my breath away.
There is a very helpful list of artists in the back. Contact information, pages their artwork is on & the kind of work they do is listed here. I find myself constantly looking to this book for inspiration & ideas.

Book Description
From Greek drama through vaudeville and modern cinema, nothing in the theatrical experience has ever guaranteed a laugh like a man in a dress. This spectacular pictorial history examines the grand tradition of male cross-dressing in the movies through more than 700 photos, more than half of which are previously unpublished. The screen's greatest stars, from comedians like Buster Keaton and Peter Sellers to "serious" actors like Marlon Brando and Max von Sydow, are pictured in everything from bustiers to ball gowns. Just as in real life, the cinematic motives for cross-dressing are complex, ranging from plot device (I Was a Male War Bride) and social commentary (Tootsie) to the simple sight gags of Laurel and Hardy. The book explores these and myriad other reasons actors are coaxed out of dress suits and into dresses. By turns provocative, serious, and silly, Ladies or Gentlemen is a delightful study of a seldom-explored facet of cinema history.
Customer Reviews:
A History of Cross-dressing in the Movies........2007-09-12
My interest in this book comes from my fifty years in the theatre and television industry in Australia. Firstly as a dancer/singer in musicals, and then for thirty years as a costumier. I occasionally had to make costumes for actors to be dressed as females. It was fascinating to see how Hollywood & European studios designed and made the costumes for some of the great actors of our times. I found the book fascinating as many of the photos I had never seen. I just wish this book had come along years ago, as it would have been a great reference book for me - and the staff that worked in my business. Robert J. Murphy
The Most Amazing Resource and Guide.......2005-12-08
I just got this book the other day, and it is really amazing. Its a big and glossy book filled with great images of Male Crossdressing in the cinema from the most familer to the most obscure. If a chap put a frock on, on celuloid, this book has it covered. Each of the images have film synopsis to go with them. It is really a great book just for the pictures, but is made even better by the movie guide that goes along with them. It has the images divided in to several differnt chapters, and at the beginigng there is a great intro by John Lithgow and the author of the book. All and all it is an absolutle pleasure to have this book in my collection.
Insightful and fun, perfect for anyone, best for that special kind of girl who likes to see the boys in heels and eyeliner.

Dark Star: The Roy Orbison Story
ASIN: 1860742416 |
Customer Reviews:
unbelievable rubbish.......2004-12-15
After reading all users reviews, i find everything about this apalling book has been already said, and i just would like to give my humble advice to other people who, like me, is fanatic of the divine Big O's voice and music, and might want to buy it. This 'book' is confusing, pretentious, full of mistakes, and just plain ugly. I also would rather give it no star at all, so just ignore the one i was forced to use for this review.
Eternal glory for Roy Orbison, simple oblivion for this very mediocre book.
Fascinating and inspirational subject--insipid biographer.......2004-02-19
I completely agree with the other five reviewers. Moreover, it's shocking how dull this book is when you consider how much drama there was in Roy Orbison's life. The author certainly doesn't offer much perspective into how Roy persevered after the horrible deaths of his wife and sons. Indeed, you don't really feel as though you've gotten to know Roy any better after finishing the book. Clayson seems to have spent almost as much text insulting other recording artists and offering long-winded, irrelevant asides as he spent discussing Roy's life and music. Let his snitty preface (in which he complained of "ham fisted" editing in a previous edition of the book) and the adulatory "About the Author" blurb stand as omens of the author's self-indulgence.
Don't waste your time reading it........2002-07-14
This book is poorly researched and contains innumerable errors of fact. Alan Clayson may be a wordsmith but a true researcher he is not. For almost all his research for this book he relies on secondary sources. No serious fact-finding for this book, I'm sad to say. Suggest he sticks to tabloid gossip columns and leave the biographies for those equipped to write them. If you want to read the real story of Roy Orbison do yourself a favour and purchase Ellis Amburn's "Dark Star - The Roy Orbison Story".
Bill Frady - Brother of Claudette Orbison (Roy's 1st wife).......2001-02-07
How this book was ever publshed is a wonder in itself. It is filled from cover to cover with mistakes. It appears no research was attempted at all for the book. Too bad there is not a rate to show how bad it is. I was forced to give it a star just be able to give this review. therefore do not count it please.
Only The Lonely.......2001-02-06
Am I the only one? I just started reading "Only the Lonely" and find it terribly confusing. The author jumps topics often then goes on long, lengthy narratives not related to what he had started to discuss. I love Roy Orbison's music and wanted to know about his life and career but this book has been a disappointment from the start. I especially do not like the frequent and negative references made about Roy's physical appearence. This was a kind, sweet, gentle man with a wonderful voice, so what if he did not look like Elvis!

Libby Gelman-Waxner's hilarious look at Barbra Streisand's The Mirror Has Two Facesalone is worth the cover price of this book. "Ms." Gelman-Waxner's loving, dead-on, and intensely cruel skewering of Streisand's ego is funny even if you're the biggest Streisand fan in the world, as Gelman-Waxner is. If you want more, there's screenwriter Evan Hunter's glorious recollections of his days with Alfred Hitchcock, Jill Robinson's chilling portrait of Roman Polanski, and essays by such luminaries as Alice Walker, Martin Scorcese, and George Plimpton. While I was sorry to see nothing by Anthony Lane, the 23 essays in this book are all good reading, well chosen by editor Plimpton, who can be forgiven even for including himself because his piece is one of the best. --James DiGiovanna
Customer Reviews:
totally enjoyable and addictive.......1999-04-18
This book is a lot of fun and really enjoyable reading. The Barbra thing is a hoot! This apparently is the first of an annual series - I can't wait till next year!
first-rate.......1998-08-24
There are some wonderful essays in here. Two of the best include one about producing by a producer who worked for Robert Redford. Very interesting look at the producing life, which I've rarely seen written about. And another utterly fascinating essay by a homosexual who explains why homosexuals idolize tough, bitchy, ballsy female stars like Madonna and Streisand and Judy Garland. I've always wondered why homosexuals would idolize these type women (why women, they love men?) and this essay is an articluate glimpse into the homosexual mind.

Book Description
Alphabetically arranged, the entries in this encyclopedic study cover Woody Allen's movies, plays, fiction, television shows, and stand-up comedy from 1964 through 1998. Film entries begin with basic production information followed by a literary analysis of the work, which considers how and why Allen develops new narrative forms for conveying his stories. The dominant themes in Allen's work and the literary and cultural traditions he draws upon are discussed. Entries draw connections among Allen's works, outline his relationships with specific cinematographers and actors, point out major influences, and demonstrate how Allen fits into the Western canon of literature, film, and philosophy. Collectively, the entries reveal a serious and substantial artist whose experimentation with narrative form and structure enables him to explore human nature and human relationships in a new, innovative, and insightful manner. Literature and film scholars and Woody Allen enthusiasts will appreciate the easily accessible information provided in this encyclopedic format. A filmography and bibliography follow the entries and offer suggestions for further research. An index is included and photographs enhance the text.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Little Book.......2001-02-21
To tell the truth, I wasn't expecting much when I first picked up this book. I'm a Woody fan but I thought the encyclopedic format (topics are alphabetized as in an encyclopedia) would be too superficial or unfocused. However, once I started I couldn't put it down. Actually, I did put it down because I have a busy life. But that's why this book was perfect for me. I could read it in "airtight compartments." I could read a section, get my fill, put it down, and come back to it an hour or day later and dive right in again.
I learned a lot about Woody, his movies, major themes, the people he's worked with -- and, most importantly, life in general. I'm particularly interested in the Woodman's ideas about love and relationships (yes, I need the eggs). This book allowed me to review a lot of his movies fast in an overview type of way and discern some of his patterns about "eggs" I hadn't perceived or had only perceived blurrily. In fact, I think rereading it in this way will yield newer and deeper insights each time because the author, a professor, writes with great depth and insight (yet in a very readable and economic style).
Although, as I said, I'm a Woody fan I have to admit that there were a number of his works I either didn't understand or didn't even know about. This book gave me a new appreciation to see movies I had dismissed (or simply missed) for one reason or another.
If you're a Woody fan this is a great book to have. In many ways, it transcends Woody by putting his work in the context of modern thought and art. But it's still a great Woody book and one that any thinking fan is going to enjoy.

Updated annually, the 1998 edition of Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide contains reviews of more than 19,000 movies, from 1914's Cabiria and Tillie's Punctured Romance to 1997's Con Air and Batman and Robin. The book lists each film's director and major cast members, tells whether it is in black and white or color, and provides the movie's running time. It rates each film from **** to BOMB, notes whether or not the movie was made in wide-screen format, and records its availability on videocassette and laser disc. The brief reviews that accompany this documentation are tersely written, filled with enthusiasm and humor. Maltin's indices of famous stars and directors make the volume a mini-encyclopedia. Every movie lover should have a copy of Maltin's text.
Customer Reviews:
Worth checking out........2002-03-28
Its been said once I will say it again. Any film buff must buy this book, and more works by Leonard Maltin.
You can tell when Leonard Maltin starts talking about a movie he knows just what he his talking about and has the words to perfectly explain himself.
Sometimes however I feel he could be more insiteful when it comes to movies he hates.
But then on the other hand theirs only a few million movies list her.
How'd I live without one?.......1998-12-01
I picked up my very first copy of this invaluable resource (1993 edition) at a yard sale several years ago. Now, of course, I buy one annually and pass the old version along to favored friends and relatives. My two adult sons refuse, however, to be recipients ("we'd rather call and ask YOU for the information!") I refer to my guide daily at the very least (can you tell I love movies?), usually far more often on the weekends. I keep a copy in the living room and one next to my bedside. But really, I AM a relatively normal person with a full life --- honest!!
The Ultimate Companion for Film Buffs.......1998-11-18
Leonard Maltin is possibly my favorite critic. His taste is the best of all the thick film guidebooks. I also have the Mick Martin and Marsha Porter guide, they give films like Speed 5 out of 5 stars...pathetic. I have read maybe 20 off track reviews in Maltin's book...out of thousands. He's great, he's awesome, he's the most trustworthy...BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU RESPECT FILM!
one important omission.......1998-10-29
loved the book and everything about it , bein an old hollywood movie buff, its such a help to me, one thing that bothers me about the book is the omission of raul walsh the director of many fine classic movies such as WHITE HEAT with james cagney, somebody get ahold of ole leonard boy and tell him to list him its drivin me crazy LOL
Most reliable.......1998-10-20
I also know the Blockbuster Entertainment and the Martin/Porter guides, and I have to say that Maltin's is by far the most reliable. The reviews are precise and informative, and although he only gives the films up to 4 stars (the other two guides have 5), the ratings give a better idea of the films quality.

Book Description
From the Oscar-winning blockbusters Titanic and Good Will Hunting to Sundance oddities like Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane, to foreign films such as Life is Beautiful (La Vita E Bella ), the latest volume in this popular series features a chronological collection of facsimiles of every film review and awards article published in the New York Times between January 1997 and December 1998. Includes a full index of personal names, titles, and corporate names. Like its companion volume, the New York Times Theater Reviews 1997-1998, this collection is an invaluable resource for all libraries.

Advertised as "the discerning movie lover's guide," this book of capsule reviews from The Theatre of the Living Arts is the most comprehensive film guide that also functions as a catalog. As a result, the critical remarks are gentler than one usually finds in books of this sort, but when push comes to shove, the editors are willing to scorn It's Pat and the Ace Ventura films. Though TLA Film and Video Guide is comprehensive, the emphasis is on foreign and independent films made over the last 30 years. Also included are helpful indices, not just of stars and directors, but of genres, countries of origin, and themes. At the back of the book, the editors list their favorites as well as the films that have won every major critical award in the United States since 1970.
