Book Description
Ron Mueck, the hyperrealist sculptor, learned his craft making models and puppets for television and movies. He was nearly 40 when his work came to the attention of Charles Saatchi. At Saatchi's urging, he began to show his sculptures in gallery and museum contexts in the late 1990s. They met with astonishment and praise, particularly Dead Dad, a silicon and mixed-media model of Mueck's father's body, perfectly proportioned but less than four feet long, which made its debut at the highly publicized Sensation show. The human presence and perfection of detail in Mueck's work, the realism and mysterious, transfigured quality of his figures, which stems in part from his extravagant liberties with scale, excited immediate international attention. Since then, the artist's fame has increased steadily with each new work. This second, expanded edition of the monograph of record updates the only comprehensive publication on Mueck's work. Bastian's catalogue raisonne lists all of his works to date.

sculpture blended with photography, and a lot of sense.......2007-03-12
Even since the sixties the idea of getting into a form sculpture able to depict reality in such and instance that can mistake the eye, and play with the mimesis notion in such a way, perception by all means get deceived, has been explored.
In the contemporary work of Mueck this ideas get totally unbounded in a body of work that is a continuos surprise and further more a challenge to visual perception, psycological perception and emotive perception. Just imagine an enormous photograph of a child enhanced to be several meters high. you do? now make it in 3d.., that is what we are talking here.
Children of several floors, gigantic babies, tiny old ladies, make a powerful discourse about a sculpture much more next to a very 'photoshopized' image, even the shworooms look like and art piece with the Muecks in them.
In a world were the shallow and empty conceptual art is everywhere is really refreshing to see this guy work.
This book about the australian artist is in english and german, and contains apart from many if not all of his work in color, a catalogue raisonne list of all his produced work to the date of publication 2005.
Since I really have no interest in today's empty and pretentious art -instalation, conceptual and all those things, you know, that should bare a sign at the enter of the galleries: 'don't drive heavy machinery..' because of their boring charachteristics- normally my shopping list is only of photo books.
But this art book is something so beautiful, that even if you are not an 'art lover' -remember Mueck as the author of many cinema effects like 'Labyrint' prosthetics before becoming a force in the art world- you can have hours of joy and poetic interaction through images full of tenderness, mistery and force.

Freud at Work: Lucian Freud in Conversation with Sebastian Smee
ASIN: 0500976600 |
Book Description
A distinctive body of work that has given a fresh impulse to modern sculpture.
The stunning and carefully crafted sculpture of Australian artist Ron Mueck has catapulted him into the first rank of the contemporary art world. This book is a record of his recent exhibition at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, for which he created an ensemble of new sculptures, two of which are of gargantuan scale.
Mueck explores reality's ambiguous relationship with artifice. Brilliantly employing the strategies of imitation and illusion, he creates figures that express the contradictions between the real world and the world of the imaginary. His lifelike figures with their veins, wrinkles, sagging skin, and moles have been crafted to such perfection that the remarkably convincing result is deeply disturbing. 90 color illustrations.

Book Description
Ron Mueck has always employed scale with psychological intent, creating uncannily life-like sculptures that are never actually life size. The life of "Boy," his largest sculpture yet with a bulk of roughly 16 feet, is documented here in photographs that reveal his eight-month-long gestation period in a London warehouse and his piecemeal journey by boat to the Venice Biennale.
Customer Reviews:
visually intoxicating.......2002-10-25
Ron Mueck's background in special Make-up and character design does have a place in his fine art work ...but...He pushes the envelope to its breaking point with his sculptures...his love of form and humanity in all its shapes and sizes make the viewer(at least this Viewer)experience a view of humanity that borders on reverential awe. "Boy" is the visual diary of the constuction of one of his huge sculptures , a crouching young man, sounds simple enough, but the finished pieces creates a sense of awe at its construction and in its kind imitation of life!

Book Description
Spring in the South Carolina Low Country, the azaleas are in full bloom, and the tourists are flocking to Pinckney Plantation.
But so is trouble. Ex-beauty queen and wannabe actress Mary Mar (nee Mary Martha Futch) has returned to Indigo Island to play a starring role in a relative's wedding. But she claims that someone is trying to kill her.
Cousins Lindsey and Margaret Ann don't have time for a diva receiving death threats. After all, Margaret Ann's directing the wedding of the year at Pinckney, where Lindsey's temporarily in charge.
But when a dead body turns up at the Gatortorium, the island's newest attraction, and Mary Mar goes missing, the cousins once again don their sleuthing caps. Margaret Ann's younger sister Bonnie, who is back home for spring break, is also happy to help, as long as she can eat lunch first.
The engaging detective trio returns in another tale of Southern mystery and manners. Secrets from the past compete with present-day perils as the cousins contend with tourists, termites, kidnappers, and killers-as well as another ghost at Pinckney Plantation.
Customer Reviews:
marsh madness.......2007-09-23
the second caeoline cousins book continues the ups and downs of the three cousins relationships and their tendences for disaster and the desire of others to kill them because of their must know nature
Funny follow-up.......2006-06-01
Second book written by the three cousins who call themselves Caroline Cousins, Marsh Madness takes place on a southern island in South Carolina. Humor abounds among the three protagonists as they try to prepare for a wedding at their pride and joy, Pinckney Mansion. But fate steps in by way of the death of a local (wannabe) celebrity's secretary - which is considered a case of mistaken identity. Follow the three women through the multitude of storylines that, to me, are VERY realistic among people who have known each other so long to the conclusion of many mysteries.
Marsh Madness.......2006-01-04
I picked this book up on the "new" shelf at my library knowing nothing about it or the author. I was delightfully pleased with this light mystery. I enjoyed the down-to-earth cousins who wrestled with everyday trials and tribulations. It wasn't compelling, but the characters were delightful. It was just fun!
A Sense of Place - Marsh Madness.......2005-09-24
If you like stories set in the South, you will enjoy Marsh Madness since the descriptions of coastal island life and culture are "right on the money". The trio of authors, writing under the pseudonym of Caroline Cousins, really are cousins who grew up on a coastal island in or near Charleston, SC, and their feel for the people and the dialogue show their love of the South. The mystery itself is fun, has a few twists in it and there is a satisfying ending; however, the sense of place appealed to me more than anything else. If you want a quick read, one worthy of taking to the beach on a hot summer day - or conversely, curling up inside on a snowy day - then I think you might enjoy "Marsh Madness".
Gave it Up in Less Than Two Chapters.......2005-08-17
I had to give this book one star because I did not get past the second chapter. I must admit, I got the book because one of the authors used to be the literary critic for the Orlando Sentinel (where I live), so there was some local interest on my part. This book only goes to prove that critics do not make good writers. To me, the worst description a book can receive is "trite." Unfortunately, this book fits that description perfectly. I found the writing poor, even juvenile. I have two suggestions for these writers: Either try writing on an individual basis and see what can be produced separately, or, try writing for young teenage girls. Sorry to be so harsh but, as a critic should realize, a review should be honest or it is of no help.

Book Description
Film buffs, graphic designers, and art students will relish this beautifully produced and strikingly illustrated volume. Arranged in roughly chronological order, it brings together movie posters from around the world, starting with Charlie Chaplin film ads and the Russian Revolutionary movie posters of the 1910s, then spanning the century to show posters publicizing hits of the 1990s, including The Silence of the Lambs, Spike Lee films, and many more. The book's sections focus on renowned individual designers, directors, movies, and genres. Important poster designers such as Saul Bass, Jan Lenica, and Juan Gatti receive particular attention, as do great directors who had strong opinions about how their films should be represented. Among the latter are Alfred Hitchcock, Jean-Luc Godard, and Otto Preminger. All major film genres are representedmusicals, Kung Fu movies, films noir, westerns (including so-called spaghetti westerns filmed in Italy), science fiction classics, and others. Readers are treated to examples of movie posters not only from the United States, Britain, and France, but also to previously unpublished examples from countries as diverse as Poland, China, and Cuba. For instance, fans of Orson Welles might be surprised to see the previously unpublished Italian poster advertising Citizen Kane under its Italian title, Quarto Potere (The Fourth Estate). This handsome volume will be valued by graphic designers, poster collectors, and anyone sharing the popular passion for cinema.
Customer Reviews:
Limited.......2007-06-16
Colorful pictures of the posters. Tedious details at the bottom of the pages. Very limited posters displayed in the book. Why bother publishing a book that shows mundane posters when I know there are tons of better posters out there already? The book is ridiculous. Even shutting out the horror picture posters.
Covers movie poster art from silent to art house works.......2004-06-06
Emily King's Century Of Movie Posters, in contrast, covers movie poster art from silent to art house works, following the development of the movie poster as an art form from its roots in the 1900s to modern times. A chronological arrangement in Century Of Movie Posters examines four key areas of cinema history and highlights the most influential posters and designers of their times. Packed with color photos throughout, this is eye candy at its best.

The Early Works of Arnold Schoenberg, 1893-1908
ASIN: 0195128265 |
Book Description
Between 1908 and 1923, Arnold Schoenberg began writing music that went against many of the accepted concepts and practices of this art. Largely following his intuition during these years, he composed some of the masterpieces of the modern repertoire--including Pierrot lunaire and Erwartung--works that have since provoked a large, though fragmented, body of critical and analytical writing. In this book, Bryan Simms combines a historical study with a close analytical reading of the music to give us a new and richer understanding of Schoenberg's seminal work during this period.
Customer Reviews:
Come out in paperback, .....!.......2004-02-03
Certainly the most serious, scholarly, and musicological study of Schoenberg's early, atonal work. For those interested in less of an introduction and more in depth analysis, this book is the key for its subject area. Lucidly written, the ideal first step beyond so many biographical-introductions to this great composer.

Number and math game fans are bound to find several new amusements here. Even many of the well-known classics from generations past take on new life with the fresh twists Kordemsky provides.
Book Description
Most popular Russian puzzle book ever published. Marvelously varied puzzles ranging from simple "catch" riddles to difficult problems. Lavishly illustrated with clear diagrams and amusing sketches. Edited for English-readers, while retaining warmth and charm of original. Inexpensive edition of first English translation. Introduction by Martin Gardner. 425 line illustrations. Solutions.
Customer Reviews:
Funny, challenging, and well written!.......2006-11-08
I bought this book while working as a gifted children teacher. I liked it so much that I used to keep it in my car and solve riddles whenever I had to wait for someone. It is a great resource for all teachers; children are suddenly made quiet when you present a puzzle to them.
I especially like the stick puzzles, where you can distribute a number of matches to students (by the way, it works with kids, teenagers and adults alike) and give them a puzzle. The advantage of this kind of puzzle is that you can give additional tasks to those fast-solvers; you do not have a story behind it.
The organization of the book is excellent; it is divided by difficulty levels as well as by type of puzzle. For example, you have different levels of geometry problems and of sticks problems.
Great book!
very good .......2006-11-05
despite of difficulty, I love it because there are various good problems
Thanks you
An absolutely must have for puzzle lovers........2006-07-19
Excellent collection of math puzzles not requiring advanced math - A book for anyone and everyone
With and outstanding collection of 359 mathematical recreations and being lavishly illustrated with more than 400 diagrams and sketches, this book will certainly become a treasure in the personal library of anyone that enjoys solving puzzles.
It's a mammoth puzzle collection, compare with most math teasers and puzzles book available. But what is important is not the quantity, but the quality and charm of the problems presented.
The book is divided in fifteen chapters, as shown:
- Amusing problems.
- Difficult problems.
- Geometry with matches.
- Measure seven times before you cut.
- Skill will find its application everywhere.
- Dominoes and dice.
- Properties of nine.
- With algebra and without it.
- Mathematics with almost no calculations.
- Mathematical games and tricks.
- Divisibility.
- Cross sums and magic squares.
- Numbers curious and serious.
- Numbers ancient but eternally young.
- Solutions.
Everyone will find the type of problems the like most. Often the puzzles are presented in the form of charming stories that provides valuable insights into contemporary Russian life and customs.
Wonderful, charming puzzles teach problem solving........2006-01-12
I was thrilled and surprised to see that this book is still in print. I loved puzzles as a child and spent many hours for fun working the problems in this book (which may have paved the way for my PhD in Computer Science). I fished out my old copy recently to show my 11 year old daughter how I spent my spare hours as a child - *not* playing computer games of dubious educational value. I am sure that working the problems in this book helped increase my problem solving skills - in a different and more general way than I was learning in school.
Of all the puzzle books and puzzles I ever owned, this is the only one I saved. The book has a wide variety of types of puzzles (not all involve numbers). While some are easy, most were challenging. The descriptions were charming, with Russian names of children and towns and quaint puzzle descriptions involving wells, or steam engines or household objects. All in all, a delightful, very educational puzzle collection.
Comprehensive set of math puzzles for various levels.......2001-11-14
Nice collection of problems which demand some creativity as well as varying degrees of mathematical prowess. Also populated with interesting anedotes regarding mathematicians throughout history.
Although no mathematics beyond the high school level is required, the challenge lies in the ingenious application of even the most rudimentary math and logic necessary to successfully tackle these exercises. The problems range from rather simple to difficult. Some amount to raw logic riddles requiring little or no math while others offer the opportunity to fine tune one's skills in geometry and algebra. In addition to offering a rich variety of problems which will satisfy the needs of puzzlists at many levels, the editors have made a good point of dividing the problems into categories emphasizing different sets of skills including geometry, algebra, arithmetic operations, spatial visualization and logic. Such a delineation makes it easy evaluate strengths and weaknesses so you can focus on areas of improvement.
Given the long history of this publication, several problems will be familiar to some seasoned puzzle enthusiasts but most will still provide a fresh challenge.
