Gorgeous book on a fascinating topic.......2007-06-04
This is quite simply one of the most engaging, charming, and informative books I've ever read. It is facile enough to draw in the casual reader but informatie enough to cover a bit of history little-covered up until now, even to historians. Lovely illustrations, carefully researched. Every theatrical costumer or theater dept should have a copy on hand, and lovers of vintage Chinese (Asian) clothing will appreciate it. Great treatment of life in Manchu china: footbinding, nightclubs, prostitution, etc. Highly recommended.

not what I was expecting..........2006-11-17
This book left me a bit disappointed - with it's title,I was hoping for an introduction to the works of many great film makers in which I would discover their talents and merits,and serve as a guidebook for future movie rentals and purchases.Instead,I found the majority of the book somewhat confusing from my Western point-of-view: each "outlaw master" is given a brief career overview,followed by an interview.The interviews are chock-full of references that will be lost on all but the most devoted Japanese film historian: seeing as most(?) of these films have never been screened here,I feel that the audience for this book will be somewhat limited.I would have preferred more in-depth discussion on each respective career,focusing on the movies and their content,as opposed to the author trying to impress the subject with his encyclopedic film knowledge.

Mariachi Music is much more than Music, it is Mexican Culture.
Every region in Mexico has it's own sound, dress and color.
These sounds and color made it's way to the U.S. via Mr. Natividad Cano. He opened the door for everyone else to continue the tradition.
It was Nati's dream for everyone to feel Mexican and to have Mariachi reach levels not even Silvestre Vargas ever dreamed.
This book helps document the history of how Mariachi Music and Mexican culture has made it's way into mainstream American society.

REPRINT of Play Poker Like the Pros. Don't buy both........2007-09-22
I foolishly bought both these books seeing I could get a discount if I bought both. I got them separately in the mail and thought they accidentally sent me two of the same book. Yes they are that similar. I will in the long haul probably benefit from the material in both but think that it should be boldly advertised that most of the material is directly copied from the original book.

Phil is just being Phil.......2007-01-09
Phil obviously knows a lot about Texas Hold'em, he just doesn't share much if it in this book. If you think Phil is the smartest man on earth and devour anything he touches, then you'll love this book. He does a great job of pointing out situations where his brilliant intellect helped him win past tournaments. Unfortunately, he fails to deliver on the purpose of the book, helping US play better. It appears to me that he wrote it while on a long flight, the morning before his publisher's deadline. Don't bother with this one.

Being a good poker player does not make you a good author. If you know anything at all about texas holdem you will be disappointed with this book. Nothing but cookie cutter advice and bragging about being the best poker player in the world.
Solid Book (ignore 'Rip-off" comments).......2006-10-26
This is a solid book by a guy who, love him or hate him, knows what he is doing. If you have a basic feel for the game, take a look at this one. For the money it is a good addition to your library. Of course, if you want to learn what he has to say about a few other poker variations, then get the larger book (I forget the title, but you will see it if you search).
This leads me to my last comment. While I do not like to comment on other people's comments, there is one thing that deserves to be mentioned. A few people have complained that this book is merely a ripoff of his other book. This is true. One person even said that it would not have been so bad if the publisher would have mentioned this. Well, in every version of the book that I have looked at, the first sentence in the introduction clearly states that this is meant to be a reprint of the Hold'em stuff from the larger book. It could not be any clearer and is certainly not deceptive. Now, there may be a version of this book that does not include that sentence. However, I would bet that most, if not all, do. Anyways, please don't include those comments when making your decision. They are flat out mistakes.

The perfect guide to one of the best TV series ever!.......2000-11-01
For anyone who just caught this series on BBC America and was blown away, this is a must have! I found it last week in a book store in London and - while not someone who usually buys books about TV shows - was so delighted I bought it.
The book features a synopsis of each of the series' 32 episodes, behind-the-scenes gossip/info on the making of the show, interviews with cast and crew, snippets of some of the show's wittiest dialogue, photos, and press clippings, put together in a style reminiscent of a scrapbook.
Now if only the videos would be made available in the US!
