beautiful artwork.......2004-09-11

this book is such a great collection of artwork with artists ranging everywhere from well known designs such as those from the resident evil, spawn and a little of the sandman comic to many unknown artists who are just as highly talented. they use every different medium in this book, each with their own distinct praises. some of this artwork inspired me to start my own drawing and painting again, that's how good it is. i highly recommend this to any true fan of fantasy art.

Really nice collection of all sorts of fantasy art..from the cliche "dragon with muscle man" stuff to really really abstract images.Even has a few nice sculptures! Get it!

Such great work..........2002-05-12

There's a lot of imagination and talent in this book, and with such a varity of styles it's sure to appeal to a wide range of tastes. Personally, I enjoy the edgier, more contemporary material, but there is also plenty of more traditional "faries and unicorn"-type stuff as well. I especially like seeing some comic book covers being treated as the art they are, w/o the title covering up a good chumk of the work.

All in all, a GREAT collection! May it inspire you to write, drwa or create something outstanding of your own...

Extraordinary Art... Again........2002-01-11

As with every year, the Spectrum series has proven itself to be an indispensible resource for any fantasy art fans. It doesn't matter if you're a casual fan, like myself, or an art connoisseur... There's something in here for you.

Spectrum 8 is more or less just like previous Spectrum books. The art is broken down into sections (Books, magazines, unpublished, etc.) and each section has a Gold & Silver award for the best pieces of art in that section (based on what the Spectrum jury thinks). You can spend hours looking through this book, only to pick it back up again a month later and spend another hour or two reading through it.

I suggest you purchase the hardcover edition and stash it away in your bookcase, because you'll be looking through it for years to come.

A fantastic collection!.......2001-11-22

I just got my copy of "Spectrum 8". What a great collection of fantastic art. The series gets better with each volum and I like the fact that sculpture pieces is also included. I can spend and hours just observing the colors and details of the images, not to mention the fact that Moebius is finally recognized as 2001 Grandmaster. Well worth the price I paid for the hardcover. I don't need to mention much about the reproduction quality of the artwork, because it is superb. Enough said.

Lynch is particularly interesting when he talks about the creative process: "I don't want to give the impression that I sit around thinking up horrible things. I get all kinds of different ideas and feelings. If I'm lucky, they start organizing themselves into a story--then maybe some ideas come along that are too eerie, too violent, or too funny, and they don't fit that story. So you write them down and save them for two or three projects down the road. There's nowhere you can't go in a film--if you think of it, you can go there." In Need of a Third Revision.......2007-08-14

This book is a thorough and inspiring look into David Lynch's head. The original (which ended at Lost Highway) was a good read, but I think they were a little too fast to put out the second version. The newest revision ends right at Mulholland Drive. This is great for the reason that you get to read about him doing an unexpected Disney movie and also his battle with ABC over Mulholland Drive. You even get to read a little about his practice of Transcendental Meditation, which is kept graciously short as the man could usually (and has) filled books on the subject. However, I feel they jumped the gun here. Just after Mulholland Drive, DavidLynch.com and DV recording changed the man's entire approach. Any aspiring film maker and/or Lynch fan would completely benefit from his insight on such endeavors. For someone who went to the American Film Institute to completely do away with film is phenomenal and demands discussion. The internet has really put a spin on his work as well, considering his newfound freedom. This book, while masterfully executed by Chris Rodley, needs at least one more revision on the aforementioned topics. Before that happens, we're not given the entire glimpse into the man's complete range and utter ability to adapt to the times. By all means, read this book, you just might want to wait for the third revision.

The one to get.......2006-07-19

In this revised edition of "Lynch on Lynch", two new sections have been added: one on the Straight Story and one on Mulholland Drive. As with the rest of the book the updated sections consist of Chris Rodley interviewing David Lynch. While some of the dialogue does become a bit repetitive, the questions really are well posed. In his answers Lynch gives a glimpse of his creative process and more; for example, he discusses the links between Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard and Mulholland Drive, talks about both his frustration with the TV medium and his attraction to it, as well as divulging more about his partnership with composer, Angelo Badalamenti (one of the most productive relationships between director and composer since Fellini and Nino Rota). Black and white photographs from sets are also included throughout.

Considering the book in its entirety, it is a very comprehensive work, covering everything from the aforementioned material to Lynch's childhood, his early work in painting and the first experimental films he directed. This book is still THE one to get for fans of David Lynch. Reading it one comes away with the sense of having actually met and talked with the man himself -- none of the other books on Lynch really capture this feeling.

Those who already own the old version of the book may want to think twice about purchasing the revised edition. The sections added are not all that lengthy and much of the material has already been discussed elsewhere.

Great, insightful book on a living legend.......2006-05-10

This is a great book written by Chris Rodley that is basically a series of interviews with living legend David Lynch. If you're not into Lynch or his movies at all, I doubt you'll find anything insightful in here but if you appreciate the man at all, this is definitely a must read. It covers a lot of ground on his upbringing, film and art projects. What makes this book such a good read is that Rodley asks great questions to which Lynch answers in a very entertaining fashion. Reading this is probably the closest thing to actually speaking to him and he has an incredible, warm personality. While he doesn't give up his secrets too readily, he does share personal opinions on art in general (film, painting, photography, etc.) and what makes art powerful. He offers invaluable insight on the filmmaking process and some details on what it took to get his films made. He talks about his successes and debacles with equal parts candidness as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates Lynch and anyone who digs offbeat filmmakers.

(NOTE: Make sure that if you pick this up, you get the edition that has been revised and updated to include "Mulholland Drive")

A must have for any Lynch fan.......2005-08-05

This book is a 300 pages interview with David, so you hear what he wants to say and you do not hear the stuff he likes to keep for himself. I think it is great to have Lynch's vision "unfiltered" that is why this book is a must have for anyone interested to know more about the artist/filmaker and his works.

The sum of one's FEARS.......2002-08-28

A fascinating read. In these extensive interviews, David Lynch tells of his journey from painting student to filmaker. He refuses to interpret his films, as he believes this strips them of their power. He reveals a lot of personal stuff like his fascination with piles of dirt and his obsession with building sheds out of found wood. Through his revelations you become acquainted with the motifs that drive him on. I especially enjoyed his explanations of his urban fears and how they transform themselves from city to city.

No darlings killed.......2006-06-16

My view of this book differs from the other reviews. Maybe it's wrong of me towrite a review, because I have finished the book, but not read it all. Still, this proves my point in a way; The book is too long.

The way this book is written, it reminds me of a method I used in school, and had to deliver a paper on a subject. Often, I chose special subjects where references were scarce, so I ended up having very few sources, just a sentence here and a sentence there. But just by writing around it, adding descriptions etc, I could make it look like this was some serious stuff that I had dug up, that I had done a lot of research on the matter, and I could usually present a long (though probably shallow) paper to the teacher.

In a way, this is what Ben Watson has done. He writes in extreme detail about small events. Only the difference is that he doesn't have few sources, like I had in school. He has an extreme amount of information, and nothing is left out. Like other reviews mentions, this includes his own analysis on certain concerts and recordings. This is to me not very interesting, much because Watson tries to write in a very intelligent way, and pushing his own views on the philosophical aspects of free improvisation. This might not be a problem for you. To me, it makes the book way too long.

There are, however, good sides. There are a lot of long excerpts from interviews with Bailey, and these are the most useful and interesting bits, I find. Bailey explains his views much better than Watson can analyze his way to. Unfortunately, there is less and less of this moving towards the end of the book, and more and more descriptions of events (like who played on this and that Company Week, and if Watson thinks it was successfull or not).

I am an improvising musician myself, I love biographies, as well as conceptual thinking about music. This book still was a boring read - way too detailed, unless you're a Bailey-freak.

Surpised when i spotted this one...........2005-04-04

What? Derek Bailey? Verso?

Picked this one up in a flash let me tell you. I have good things to say about this book and one or two not so good things, gave it four out of five after all...

I ve known of but only been sort of listening to Derek Bailey for about five years. Im impressed that a publisher went so far as to put this book out--not only a biographical book about a fairly obscure musician but also a healthy left-wing analysis of a relatively obscure music scene, improvisation. Creative and well written.

The information on Bailey is fantastic, the information about who he played with is even more special--sends you looking in new places. The book functions a bit like a catalog of improvising musicians, giving you info that is not that easy to come by. The tone is quite frank, Watson is not afraid to point out some of the less positive points of Baileys musical partners.

This is one of the problems with the book. Bailey is in the spotlight and can do no wrong. Classically trained musicians bear the worst of Watsons critiques. Im not sure how you can accurately critique improvising musicians, the whole point of this music is exploration. Maybe a few of Baileys muckups would have been good, he is from Yorkshire after all and his humour makes the tone of the book.

The other problem I thought about after finishing this book was the detail Watson goes into explaining the performances, it reads like a long concert review at times. I would have preferred to read about what happened after the show, before, maybe a bit more history on some of the artists and so on.
The part about ECM being bedwetting music for yuppies (sorry if i misquoted but i think im right) pissed me off at first but I came round after a while, look at some of the stuff they have put out in the last ten years.....

So i focused on what I didnt like in this review and hope that someone finds it useful. Its a unique book, even those marginally interested should give it a read.

Finally, a book that focuses the spotlight on one of the great musical innovators of our time: Derek Bailey. This book mixes interviews, (past& present), with peer commentary, and a detailed personal history of Derek's upbringing and musical influences. Sadly, though the author bothers to present his personal interpretation of Derek's musical output, I think we can all agree on the futility of such attempts. Luckily this banter is limited to scattered slivers from the whole of the book; he's a fan and couldn't help it!

But aside from my bias, I can completly recommend this book for its content & rich historical perspective on one of the most cherished musical figures of free music. DB

NY Times Puzzle Book.......2007-06-10

I love crossword puzzles! This book is too awkward to use though for two reasons. One is that it's heavy and hard to hold open anywhere except at a table (my favorite spot is the recliner or lawn chair!). The second reason is that the puzzle is on the wrong part of the page. It should be near the binding or even in the middle with the clues surrounding it. Again, it wouldn't be as bad at the table, but that's not where I do them.
The puzzles are great though!!

I love this book of crosswords and always having some to do when I want. The only thing I don't like about this book is how thick it is. It can be a little difficult to fill in some of the puzzles so close to the middle of the book because it doesn't open flat; however, I solve this problem by tearing out the pages. Overall, I love it.

This book has an extremely pleasing amount and variety of puzzles. Other than the fact that it doesn't clearly state that a puzzle is from Monday (easiest) or a later day in the week (harder), it's a fantastic compilation.

Massive collection of mid-1990s NYT puzzles.......2007-01-16

This volume collects the first 1,001 daily puzzles from Will Shortz's editorship of the New York Times crossword (the puzzles were originally published from 11/22/93 to 11/28/97). Two puzzles appear on each page and all answers are in the back. Unfortunately, the first 900 of these puzzles appear in random order instead of the normal Monday to Saturday progression of difficulty. Travelers will probably want a smaller book for a plane ride but there are already numerous crossword collections for such purposes. This book is strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys doing puzzles at home, offering a tremendous number of good puzzles for the price.
