Book Description
The magnificent still life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age depict tables richly laid with an array of products that attest to the vast scope of the Dutch trade network. These striking pictures reveal much more about Dutch society and capitalist culture of the seventeenth century than has been previously understood, says the author of this engaging book. Julie Berger Hochstrasser explores for the first time the significance of various foods and commodities rendered on canvas during the Dutch Republic’s phenomenal rise to prosperity.
From domestic cheese to the wines of Europe to exotic commodities like pepper, porcelain, and even slaves imported by the Dutch East and West India Companies, the fruits of global commerce glowed in paintings of the time. Yet an uncomfortable tension exists between these elegant representations of products of trade and the darker aspects of their commodity histories. With penetrating insights, Hochstrasser offers a new and provocative view of Dutch still life paintings.

Art, Life and Karl Marx in Amsterdam.......2007-10-01
One opens a book of art criticism purporting to be a review of Dutch still life in the Golden Age in the hope that such a book might actually contain art criticism. Ms. Berger Hochstratter foregoes such bourgeois expectations and instead offers us her shock and horror that Dutch still lifes in the Seventeenth Century do not confess loudly the sins of the Dutch colonial expansion and the underlying exploitation of native peoples arising from such things as the spice trade. Oh yes, there are some lovely pictures included.
One is well forewarned of the impending screed by the opening epigram from that most eminent of art historians, Karl Marx. One abandons all hope upon reading the first sentence of Ms. Berger Hochstrasser's preface, which reads, "As I first sat down to draft this preface on 8 September 2001, the International Congress Against Racism was meeting in Durban, South Africa." Indeed.
For the next 280 or so pages, we are made to suffer along with Ms. Berger Hochstrasser as she delves ever deeper into her revulsion at the inhumanities the rich inflict on the poor. Oh, by the way, all those moralizing interpretations that many art historians have read into Dutch art of the period--the vanitas--well, it seems that since none of them really explicitly condemned slavery, international trade, racism, sexism, whateverism--all those interpretations are null and void. Interesting.
I think you get the picture. This is an ideologically driven, sophomoric book. One can admire the author's idealism and her sincerity. Did I mention that the pictures are lovely? Skip this book; read Schama instead.

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Look Inside the Heads of Comics' "Next Generation".......2007-07-21
Unlike the first book in this series that featured interviews with Peter David, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, and other established comic book writers, Volume 2 features newer stars from the late 90s and present who are redefining comics for a new generation of readers.
What's surprising is how many of the newer creators started out in other mediums--Paul Dini worked in television; Geoff Johns worked in film; Greg Rucka was (and still is) a novelist. Also, many of these writers started out illustrating their own work or trying to break into the industry as artists. And most of the writers here--except Brian Vaughan--write during regular daytime hours instead of burning the midnight oil. What does it all mean? If I could figure it out, well, I'd be writing comics right now. Highly recommended for comic book fans and aspiring writers.
Insightful interviews with top creators........2005-01-19
Comic book writers are a special lot, even among creative types, fitting somewhere between performance artists and mimes in mainstream perception. Whereas Mark Salisbury's excellent first edition, published in 1999, featured many of the Modern Age's future Hall of Famers - including Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller and Grant Morrison - Tom Root and Andrew Kardon tap the current crop of writers dominating the industry, including Brian Michael Bendis, Andy Diggle, Mark Millar and Brian K. Vaughan. Unfortunately, like its predecessor, it sees fit to only include one female and not a single writer of color in the bunch.
Interspersed with script samples and highlights of specific titles they're best known for, the real meat of the book is the interviews themselves where the writers discuss craft, inspiration and the business of comics, while offering - not always purposefully, I think - glimpses into their personalities and motivations. At times these glimpses can be turnoffs, and other times they can uncover a previously unknown and interesting layer.
While many of the writers have achieved mainstream success at various levels, there's a few purely independent creators like Dave Sim and Jill Thompson represented, too. Several of them are also successful beyond the world of comic books, having written novels and screenplays - and, in Kevin Smith's case, directing well-known movies - making this a great resource for aspiring writers of all types.
The honesty of the writers is often refreshing, like Ed Brubaker admitting that "sometimes it gets tiring writing a company-owned character when you have ideas for them and the company tells you no." Or Greg Rucka admitting his Elektra series "feels like a failed experiment."
Overall, its continued lack of diversity aside, Writers on Comics Scriptwriting 2 is another strong volume from Titan Books and I only hope there's not another five year wait for the next edition. Surely there's more women and at least a few people of color on the writing side of the business, though. Right? Right? Bueller?

Premiered in 1799, the oratorio Die Schoepfung (The Creation) was a smashing success for Joseph Haydn. It was an authentic hit that received performances all over Europe in the first decade of the new century, including nearly 50 in its premiere city of Vienna. The Creation was, incidentally, the first ever example of a score to be published simultaneously in two languages: Haydn set texts collected and adapted by Baron Gottfried van Swieten--bits of Genesis and Psalms, along with snippets of Milton's Paradise Lost--in both English and German. The composer combines a variety of musical styles (and musical tricks) to make the words live vividly in the listener's ear, and not a note is wasted. The score contains secco recitative, mighty choruses, and beguiling arias. One of the most delightful sections is the chorus (with soloists): "The heavens are telling the glory of God" ("Die Himmel erzaehlen die Ehre Gottes") that ends the first part. The Creation is a work with great religious and entertainment value.
Haydn has achieved some wonderful effects--listen to his picture of Chaos, and to his version of "Let there be light!" You can examine for yourself the means by which he accomplished it with this full orchestral score from Dover. It is, like all Dover scores, a reissued copy of a score from another publisher that has fallen out of copyright. Don't look here for the latest in Haydn scholarship, but do look here for a reasonably priced tool for exploring and understanding a wonderful score.
Book Description
Combining the traditions of a Handel oratorio and the Viennese mass with Haydn's own symphonic style, this choral masterwork of seamless perfection joyfully celebrates the wonders described in the book of Genesis. The easily affordable edition includes a text underlay in both German and English.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely worth owning if you love this music.......2004-06-20
Dover deserves praise for making the score of Haydn's masterpiece available at such a low price. Naturally, what you get is not the most recent scholarship, but rather a reproduction of an old out-of-copyright edition (C. F. Peters, Leipzig, 19th century). At the price, this is fair.
The text is legible, but not outstandingly so. I would guess that Dover reduced a full-size conductor's score slightly, to piano-music size. But the result is far more legible than a miniature score of the kind sold by Eulenberg would be.
Note that this score is for the purpose of study and following along while you listen. For actual performances, a choral singer would need a normal choral part (various publishers) with a piano reduction, as the previous reviewer noted. This Dover score would involve too many page turns for a singer, and in addition the tenor part is given in an old musical clef that would cause most tenors trouble in reading.
The words are in German with an English version directly underneath. This reflects the composer's original intention: since he had a enthusiastic following in both Austria and England, Haydn insisted that his librettist (Gottfried van Swieten) provide a metrical translation of the German words into English for the first edition. Van Swieten, though not a fluent English speaker, gamely complied, and the occasionally-amusing result is reproduced here.
Piano realization??.......1998-10-24
While I was delighted to find such a beautiful and well constructed edition of this oratorio, I was disapointed to discouver that there was no piano realization of the orchestra. German is displayed as the primary text with Eniglish sown beneath.

Book Description
Haydn's Creation is one of the great masterpieces of the classical period. This absorbing and original account of the work provides an indispensable guide for the concert-goer, performer and student alike.
The author places the work within the oratorio tradition, bearing in mind its intended early audiences in both Austria and England, and he contrasts the theological and literary character of the English libretto with the Viennese milieu of the first performances.
The complete text is provided in both English and German versions as a reference point for discussion of the design of the work and the musical treatment of the words, including questions of Haydn's pictorialism. A more detailed musical chapter examines the work through the movement types it employs -- arias and ensembles, recitatives and choruses -- distinguishing the Handelian model from Haydn's own classical idiom.
Nicholas Temperley also discusses the changing performance traditions of this work and surveys the critical reception throughout its history. In a useful appendix he quotes from the most significant critical literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Customer Reviews:
A view from the gallery.......2005-01-17
The "Power of the Force" book by Wizards of the Coast is one of the most complete indexs of the force put out by either West End Games (the privous owners of the Star Wars RPG franchise) or Wizards to date. It has a number of stats of characters that have made up the esteemed order along with additional jedi powers, feats, equipment and so forth. Another great feature of this book is that it also has stats on such jedi's like Kit Fisto, the Gray Lady, as well as updated stats on Mace Windu.
The book also shows some of the other functions of the Jedi Order and some races also view it. I only wished that it had come out after the Knights of the Old Republic game so that the Jedi Sentinal PrC could've been included but then again, that's just me.
Other than a few minor issues with the rules, Power of the Force is a great book to own and a *MUST* if you play a jedi in any era of Star Wars.
Necessary Jedi resource.......2004-12-31
To be frank, the Jedi classes offered in the Core Rulebook just aren't that cool. You can be a Guardian (typical butt-kicking Jedi saber-warrior) or a Consular (Princess Leia-ish diplomat type that shuns violence). The two prestige classes (aside from master, which of course is always cool) are interesting, but not that great. Additionally, there's little guidance on how to handle Force Spirits, which you would think is an important Jedi aspect.
Power of the Jedi remedies all of these deficiencies, adding several prestige classes that are both interesting and useful (e.g. the Jedi Healer and Weapon Master), additional light side feats and skills (including Battle Meditation and Cure Disease/Poison), and rules for managing a Jedi campaign and Jedi characters- including Force Spirits. There's also a section on Jedi equipment, including some older Jedi starships and specialized lightsabers (including the dual-phase and great saber), additional species, nasty force-wielding monsters, and a description of Jedi history and famous Jedi. The latter is particularly extensive, and includes descriptions and maps of some famous Jedi sites (e.g. the Chu'unthor).
The volume is hardcover, which largely explains the cost, and includes numerous and excellent illustrations- many of which are actual art instead of just more film captures.
If you are planning on running a Jedi campaign, or even have any light side Jedi players in a non-Force oriented campaign, this supplement is critical. I can't overstate how much depth and material it adds to the Jedi character in this game.
The Jedi's Handbook.......2003-05-08
The Power of the Jedi Sourcebook is a full-color, hardcover resource for all things pertaining to the Jedi Order. Continuing from the standard set by the Dark Side Sourcebook, the "PotJ" book combines information and utility with a tasteful arrangement of interior artwork and photos.
Most players will probably be most interested in the selection of new Jedi Prestige Classes, Light Side Force skills, feats, and equipment that the book offers. But there are also sections discussing Jedi history, Jedi traditions, new equipment, and new force-sensitive creatures. There are entries on important characters, important locations, and even advice on how to run a Jedi campaign. And of course, no book on the Jedi would be complete without a discussion of Force Spirits. This is also a section discussing new races, but most of these are also in the newer Ultimate Alien Anthology.
This book has been one of the important resources in my Star Wars campaign. I've really enjoyed using the Prestige Classes. From the Jedi Healer to the powerful Jedi Weapon Master, players now have a much wider range of advancement options open to their characters. In addition many of the force-sensitive characters, creatures, and locations have already popped up in my storyline. I also found the notes on running a Jedi campaign to be very useful, for not only can they guide a GM but they can also aid players on how a Jedi should conduct himself.
However, I do have a few minor complaints. A few of the Light Side force skills, particularly Force Light and Sever Force, seem to be quite powerful. Perhaps this is because they were based on the abilities of comic-book characters, but in any case, it was a wise move that such skills may only be acquired with GM approval. I would have also preferred to see a much more in-depth history section, particularly as it pertains to the Tales of the Jedi storyline. Finally, I felt that the maps for some of the important locations were fairly inadequate.
However, as I noted earlier, these were minor complaints.
Overall, I found this to be an outstanding addition to my Star Wars campaign. I use it often, and it is likely that I will continue to do so for some time to come. Whether you're the GM of a campaign with Jedi in it, or whether you're a player wanting to explore the possibilities of a Jedi character, I'd recommend this book as a solid investment.
Great book for SW RPG.......2003-03-27
If you have the Core Rulebook, this supplement is a must. It contains lots of info on the jedi and lots of great stuff about the types of jedi you can play with prestige classes and all. Being a Jedi is what Star Wars is made of, so this book is a must if you want your adventure of RPG to be complete.
Amazing!.......2002-11-13
This is a must have for all Star Wars roleplayers. It has a huge amount of new stuff for playing as a jedi. An EXTREMELY helpful addition.
