Wow! Anyone who is a fan of Chesley's art needs this book. Lots of great biographical info as well. Quality of lithography is top-notch. Expensive but definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Other Worlds With A Zen-Mystery Quality.......2002-09-22

"The Art of Chesley Bonestell" is an extremely high quality Science Fiction art collection that comes around once in a decade or two. The last Chesley Bonestell collection of this calibere, "Worlds Beyond: The Art of Chesley Bonestell", was published in 1983. Chesley Bonestell's art goes back to the golden age of Science Fiction of the late 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. His work was displayed on the covers of SF periodical magazines, SF paperback books, and Space Science books of that era. His style is realistic and his work is breathtaking! His concepts of other-worldly-visions are naturally realistic and have a Zen-like feeling of mystery to them. The color plates in this book are of awesome quality. I guarantee this book will increase in price, as the 1983 collection has. The 1983, "Worlds Beyond: The Art of Chesley Bonestell", sells for around $100 or more. Buy this 2001 book, "The Art of Chesley Bonestell" now, because it will only cost MUCH more after it goes out of print.

5 out of 5 stars "Bonestell" chilling realism.......2002-08-10

I bought this book for the space art but found out there are many other excellent paintings to go along with them. Bonestell's art makes you want to be at the places he's painted except for places like New York under nuclear attack and ancient Egypt being bombarded by comets. The space art is incredible. I only wish I could get large prints of some of the pictures to frame them. I'm even considering buying another book and cutting out some of the pictures that are barely large enough to frame.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Bonestell.......2002-03-30

I am among the hundreds of thousands -- perhaps millions -- of people who owe their lifelong interest in matters of astronomy and space science to a childhood discovery of the art of Chesley Bonestell. I remember vividly pawing through the pages of The Conquest of Space at the age of about ten, my mouth open as I saw the marvels of the universe displayed.

It was thus actually rather nerve-racking when I opened this new book for the first time. Could the reality of his art possibly match my childhood memories? Could all of that vividness and excitement have been magnified in my mind's eye over the succeeding decades? Was I in for a disappointment?

I most certainly was not. If anything, the fabulous art inspired and excited me even more than it had way back then.

And there's a lot of that art here -- a real feast of it, superbly reproduced. And I discovered as I kept turning the pages, hands quite literally trembling as I discovered treasure after treasure. Even more excitingly, I found that Bonestell had worked in areas of art I'd never suspected before: fabulous landscapes, stunning sketches ... I have perused many, many art books, but I've never before reacted quite as strongly as to this one.

And it gets better. There's a long, beautifully written and utterly fascinating illustrated biography of Bonestell written by Ron Miller. It's almost as if one's getting two books in one.

An earlier reviewer (who cannot spell "Chesley") talked of this as if it were an expanded version of The Conquest of Space. He was talking through his hat. This is a completely new book covering the entirety of Bonestell's career both visually and textually; it contains a big selection of illustrations from The Conquest of Space (all the best ones), but they form only a small part of the huge and sumptuous collection on display here.

This is a gorgeous book, and an extremely valuable piece of work -- the authors/compilers deserve the highest praise for having brought this treasure to us.

4 out of 5 stars The Master!.......2001-06-10

If you were about 10 years old in 1950, there was very likely a moment of absolute epiphany in your young life. In my case it occurred in the Junior High library in about 1950. From the shelf I pulled a large dark blue book about 8 by 11 inches in size. Even the end-papers were stunning, color plates of the surfaces of Mercury and Jupiter. But, thumbing through, I actually began to tremble when I got to facing pages 132 and 133! It is safe to say I have never recovered from the sight. I now have two copies of this book, one at home which I purchased in about 1951 and one in my office, which I purchased a few years ago. It was THE CONQUEST OF SPACE, by Chelsey Bonestell and Willy Ley.

Who was this incredible artist, Chelsey Bonestell? Although I collected books illustrated by Bonestell throughout the 1950s and 1960s, I knew little about him personally until I found a trade paperback about him in the late 1970s or early 1980s, which gave a broad overview of his life and work.

The present book is a greatly expanded version of that earlier work, 256 pages versus 133 in the trade paperback. Since that paperback came out, both Chelsey and his wife have died, but I think it is safe to say Chelsey's work is more appreciated than ever. Here you'll learn of his childhood, his work as an architectural renderer and movie matte painter, and his entry into space art at an age when most men are thinking of retirement. Chesley lived to be nearly a hundred, and was able to compare many of his painted visions of other worlds to actual photos taken by astronauts and robots. But none of these photos have the incredible artistic validity of Chelsey's own vision. As many have commented, where Chesley's vision disagrees with reality, it is generally Chesley's vision which is the better.

For several generations, whenever anyone thought of space travel, or explorations of other worlds, it was Chesley Bonestell's vision they recreated in their mind's eye. Few artists have ever had or could ever hope to have such an impact.

Whether you are an old fan or are discovering Bonestell for the first time, this is a rich feast of his art, which ranges from architectural renderings to recreations of long-vanished Spanish missions of California.

I was expecting to get pictures in this book... there is none!
I was really disapointed!
Be careful, this book is only a listing of Chesley Bonestell work! Not any illustration of it!!!
But if this is what you are looking for, it seems to be very well done and complete

4 out of 5 stars NOTE: NO PICTURES!.......2004-03-04

I should not have bought this book. There's no question it is an excellent resource, but I bought it expecting artwork and there is NONE in this book! Buy it if you are an active collector looking for Bonestell's very hard-to-find paintings in magazines and books, but if you're looking for a book of his art, this isn't it!

5 out of 5 stars Praise for a Powerful Resource.......2003-04-30

I rarely take the opportunity to provide feedback, whether positive or negative, for items that I have purchased. Contrary to my nature, I enthusiastically offer my critique of Melvin Schuetz' book "A Chesley Bonestell Space Art Chronology". I have fond childhood "space" memories from the nostalgic, captivating decade of the 1950s. As a child, I gathered and treasured a modest number of space-related items. As an adult, my continued interest in space travel and exploration provides countless hours of enjoyment. Unlike when I was a child, I now have the necessary resources to seek, to find and to acquire any number of space-related collectables. Most alluring to me are "space" books and periodicals published in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Without question, the best tools that I have discovered and that I use in my quest for such books are e-bay and "A Chesley Bonestell Space Art Chronology". If I were limited to only one adjective to describe Melvin's book, it would be "powerful". As I pour through the various Appendixes, e.g., "Major Books Containing Bonestell Space Art" and Indexes, e.g., "Index of Authors and Editors", "Index of Books" and "Index of Periodicals", I gain an ever-increasing knowledge of and appreciation for Bonestell's work. Over time, I have gravitated toward particular aspects of Bonestell's space-art. Specifically, I prefer Bonestell's artistic renderings of space ships like those that graced the covers of Colliers magazines circa 1952-1954 than I do his astronomical renditions of alien planetary systems and galaxies. But that's the "powerful" nature of Melvin's book - it contains everything (I dare say - without exception). The prolific work of Chesley Bonestell is mind-boggling to me. Also mind-boggling is Melvin Schuetz' complete accounting of Bonestell's work. And, Melvin does it in such a way as to educate and entertain the reader. "A Chesley Bonestell Space Art Chronology" is a wonderful book, a must for anyone interested in Chesley Bonestell.

4 out of 5 stars Text Resource.......2000-01-18

As a long time Bonestell fan I was pleased to acquire the Chronology. It provides information about the places where Bonestell art has been published. Even the long time fan may find some surprise books. For example, it's great to be able to find out the exact issues of Colliers with Bonestell art. Be prepared, though, the only picture in the entire book is on the cover. The rest is all text. If you need a resource to help you search for OP books and magazines on the web, this is it. Be ready for high prices or just plain non-availability. Some books like The Exploration of Mars (one of the best for Bonestell art) are virtually unavailable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource on Bonestell Art.......1999-12-11

It is a well organized book, has excellent information and is easy to understand. It is very interesting (for those of us who like Bonestell and space art). It will be extremely helpful to me for obtaining Bonestell items of personal interest. I am glad Melvin Schuetz was willing to organize and share the information.

                    Book Description

Often typecast as a menacing figure, Peter Lorre achieved Hollywood fame first as a featured player and later as a character actor who trademarked his screen performances with a delicately strung balance between good and evil. His portrayal of the grisly child murderer in Fritz Lang's masterpiece M (1931) catapulted him to international fame. Lang said of Lorre: "He gave one of the best performances in film history and certainly the best in his life." Today, the Hungarian-born actor is also recognized for his riveting performances in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The Maltese Falcon (1941), and Casablanca (1942).

The first full biography of this major actor, The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre draws upon more than three hundred interviews, including conversations with directors Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, John Huston, Frank Capra, and Rouben Mamoulian, who speak candidly about Lorre, both the man and the actor. Author Stephen D. Youngkin examines for the first time Lorre's pivotal relationship with German dramatist Bertolt Brecht, his experience as an émigré from Hitler's Germany, his battle with drug addiction, and his struggle with the choice between celebrity and intellectual respectability.

Separating the enigmatic person from the persona long associated with one of classic Hollywood's most recognizable faces, The Lost One is the definitive work of a life triumphant and yet tragically tangled with so many failed possibilities.

4 out of 5 stars The Marked Man.......2007-07-09

"He's crazy about me...all the degenerates are." Peter Lorre, speaking of his chimpanzee co-star in "Five Weeks in a Balloon."

From the beginning of his career, Peter Lorre was typecast. The classic German Expressionist drama, "M", set the tone for his entire career. From that point on, Lorre said that in people's eyes, he was forever "the murderer". This was allowed to overshadow his incredible talent and his great aptitude for comedy. (His throwaway lines, like the one I quoted above, are priceless!)

His career spanned from experimental theater in pre-Nazi Germany, to classic noir films with Humphrey Bogart, to eminently forgettable films from the Sixties. (How odd that one of his last appearances was in "Muscle Beach Party"!)

Stephen Youngkin does an admirable job of chronicling Lorre's professional life, including the myriad missed opportunities--(of note: Malcolm Lowry's rabid interest in seeing Lorre play "the consul" in "Under the Volcano", and Lorre's own desire to produce a film about Kasper Hauser. Both of those projects, never realized, would have added so much to Lorre's cachet.)

The book overflows with examples of Lorre's humanity, professionalism, and wit. Unfortunately, the actor's personal battles with the demons of drug abuse and poor health, his unluckiness at love, and his profligate nature create an undertow of tragedy which no reader can escape. In the end, this is a deeply saddening and troubling book. Long after you have finished reading it, you will find yourself reflecting on the life of this brilliant and tormented individual, who indeed has a special place in the hearts of all the "outsiders" in the world.

                    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2007-06-09

First of all I am profoundly grateful, that finally someone took up the task to write a biography on one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. Mr. Youngkin did very good work especially in researching the very early years of Peter Lorre in Vienna and Berlin, which I assume must have been a quite excrutiating task. Nobody who ever saw the film "M" will ever forget the wonderful performance Peter Lorre gave. Even later on, nearing the end of his live, when he was doing B-movies, he gave them that certain Lorre-touch. It is a wonderful read and Mr. Youngkins work cannot be praised enough. Sometimes this biography makes you cry and laugh at the same time. Finally somebody did credit to this wonderful, wonderful actor.

if you are unable to get ahold of author stephen youngkin's earlier biography of peter lorre, then by all means purchase this book. it's comprehensive and thorough, and a good read of a fascinating subject. if you were able to get ahold of the earlier book, then you can save your money on this one. the only new item that would make purchasing this edition worthwhile is the photo and information on peter's daughter catherine. she looks like him but pretty, and her connection to the hillside strangler is included.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Peter Lorre!.......2006-11-13

I do hope that potential readers will pay more attention to the publisher's comments, professional reviews, and positive reviews here, because they give a much more accurate account of the contents of the book than the rather negative comments by one reader in particular (who used an alias and gave this book two stars). It seems to me that "critic" has an axe to grind against the author.

This is not a "shapeless and unfocused" telling of Peter Lorre's life, but an outstanding and scholarly chronicle that follows the timeline of his professional work - stage, film, radio, and television. Lorre was no "loser", and he is certainly not described as one here. This book is not "an endless cataloging of his failures and faults". Rather, quotes from the numerous interviews Mr. Youngkin took with Lorre's friends, family members, co-workers, and associates - and which are listed and dated in the book's back-matter - call him a loyal and generous friend and a gifted artist whose talent was not always used well by Hollywood.

As a long-time fan of Peter Lorre's, I found information on every page that set the actor and his career in historical context. Lorre did not exist in a vacuum. The events of the early part of the 20th century on up to the 1960s affected both his personal and professional lives. What one person on this page describes as "too much digression and emphasis on the trivial" is necessary description that explains where Lorre came from in his philosophy and approach to his craft as an actor.

If all you want is a brief synopsis of Lorre's life, there are plenty of "Who's Who" entries that will satisfy. But if a thorough and well-documented discussion is more to your taste, "The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre" is the book for you.

                            Book Description

Poker is a game of many skills and to become an expert poker player you need to master them all. This includes concepts such as hand selection, position, proper image projection, and reading hands. However, there are many players who have mastered most of these skills yet they still do poorly in the games — at best they are only small winners. And when they step up in limit and challenge the better players, they almost always fail. You see, knowing the concept is one thing, putting it all together is another.

As the text will show, winning poker is a process that requires a lot of thinking as well as a thorough and systematic approach to the game, and that is what this book is about. Topics include "Playing Too Many Hands," "Self-Weighting Cold Calls," "Short-Handed Play: Don't Miss Out," "The Strategic Moment in Hold 'em," "Countering a Good Reader," "A Poker Player in Therapy," and "Thoughts on the Effects of the Poker Literature." Those of you who are serious about your game should find much of this material to be extremely valuable.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Conceptual Poker Book. .......2005-11-14

I heard about Inside the Poker Mind from a few players who post at a forum I frequent, and I finally got around to purchasing it. Frankly, I have difficulty believing anybody gave this one less than 5 stars because it is a rare and excellent work. I will admit that it is not a book for beginners or even those who have yet to read Ed Miller's Small Stakes Hold `Em, but it offers extensive benefits for the intermediate player on up. Inside... is basically a collection of essays concerning topics seldom discussed, or not addressed in detail, within the typical "how to" manual. Feeney, despite having a PhD and being an accomplished high stakes player, is not broadcasting to readers from Phil Ivey-ian heights. Feeney ground out poker at the lowest levels before becoming the player he is today. His experiences in the small limits ring true for those of us dwelling in them today. My favorite essay in here, "How am I doing? Who Cares?", warns readers not to be results oriented in regards to sessions. Variance is sometimes mind-boggling, but what we must do is concentrate on playing correctly despite our aces being snapped or getting cold-decked. Really, the entire Part IV section on poker and emotion is sensational. His definition of tilt is much more subtle than the ones generally offered, and, I believe, it is much more accurate. Overall, with brilliant analysis and clear style, Inside... is far better than most of its competitors. It's for the thinking man which is what everyone should aspire to be if they want to make any money out of the game.

2 out of 5 stars This is a Book of Cautionary Tales; Not a Strategic Text.......2005-11-06

I find the title of this book to be slightly misleading: "Inside the Poker Mind" is a collection of essays on what NOT to do as a poker player (e.g. do not get smug and play weak cards, do not go on tilt, do not overestimate your odds, do not play beyond your means, do not take bad beats personally, etc.). From the title one might expect the text to relate in some way to getting "into the mind" of one's opponent (i.e. the text may have some strategic advice); this is simply not the case. There are a handful of strategic plays involved in this book, and some consideration of reading hands. However, these are addressed from the perspective of how not to make a mistake in either overusing certain strategies, or being too rigid in the face of changing conditions in the hand.

Essentially, this book assumes you already know everything there is to know about being a good poker player, and merely need some cautionary advice on avoiding common mistakes. While not valueless, I do not believe this focus serves the prospective readers of the book; the author frequently references "Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players" and "The Theory of Poker" to flesh out ideas he mentions in passing, and probably the reader would do better to explore those books IN PLACE of this one (although I have a very low opinion of "Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players"). The warnings this book contains are well-advised, however, and on the whole I'd probably give this book 2 1/2 stars if I could.

HITS: Cautions against overplaying marginal hands; good essays exploring the tilt phenomenon; the author's "by the numbers" pure analytical mindset becomes infectious, and could influence your play for the better

MISSES: The author is so vehemently anti-no limit and pot limit hold 'em that he refuses to address these games at all (absolutely do not attempt to use the author's strategic limit plays in a no limit or pot limit game); tournaments are denigrated as a drain on the poker economy (demonstrably false, in my opinion); no basic strategy advice; references other texts (particularly "Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players" - a terrible book in my opinion - and "The Theory of Poker", which is truly great) excessively to fill in basic ideas that more properly could be explained in the text.

                            5 out of 5 stars A fantastic hold'em book for experienced players.......2005-05-04

This is one of my favorite poker books. It is not for beginners; it is filled with interesting and advanced topics in limit Hold'em. This is a good book for any reader who is looking to read more advanced material. The section titled "Do You Pass the Ace-Queen Test?" was controversial when the book first came out, but Feeney's thoughts has proven to be correct. The Short-Handed essays are illuminating as well. Definitely a great addition to any hold'em library.

4 out of 5 stars Add this to your library.......2005-03-24

I'm a fairly serious poker player. As such, I have a lot of the books everyone talks about; Super System I, most of Sklansky and Malmuth, even Phil Helmuth. (I'm not a fan of Phil, but he makes some good points, especially on Omaha) I debated getting Inside the Poker Mind for a while. Wish I had gotten it a long while ago! It's not the "greatest" poker book I've read...hey, I only gave it 4 stars. It is, however, very useful in that it does illustrate some real issues with thinking at the table. While I found that I knew much of what he had to say, I still enjoyed the book and feel it improved my game somewhat. However, as other reviewers have noted, NOTHING takes the place of LOTS of hands played. As an aside from the review, my personal recommendation is as follows:

                            1) Get the books and study. Re-read as your game improves.
                            2) Play on-line cheaply and move up in limit as your game improves.
                            3) Buy the Wilson software...it's not impressive looking, but it lets you play millions of hands without going into your wallet.
                            4) Get into or start a home game and play as often as possible. Playing with friends isn't as scary as with strangers at a casino.
                            5) When you've done the first 4 things, visit a local casino or cardroom and try an inexpensive game.

If you're still losing money after that, I suggest you switch to checkers or tiddlywinks.

Allow students to experience the richness of Polynesian culture as well as the challenge of dramatic reading with this Readers Theatre resource. During his years of living and teaching in Oamaru, New Zealand, James Barnes became intimately involved in the Maori culture. Through extensive research of the mythology of Polynesia, Barnes succeeded in collecting stories passed on by ancient storytellers. His variation of these 26 stories and folktales is included, along with readers theatre interpretation and suggested presentation.

I am impressed with the way the author has set out the drama scripts - the storyline itself, followed by an inside look into the characters, and then a suggested play format to follow. What I also like is that it gives the ability for students to amend and adjust the storyline as they wish - in order to accentuate any aspect they make like to. I like the fact that the drama pieces are short - it leads to lots of possible development and support activities - particularly in the younger classes. The opportunity to add Maori language script alongside to enhance what's already provided is another bonus.

The additional parts at the back of the book (the cultural and pronunciation guides and the glossary) provide some valuable support information for teachers and learners.
