Book Description
Released in 1925 by First National Pictures, Willis O'Brien's The Lost World was a remarkably faithful adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's book and served as a direct inspiration for the 1931 film classic King Kong (1933). Its story depended as much on O'Brien's pioneering special effects as it did on acting or directing. Film historians have long noted the movie's impact on a generation of horror and fantasy directors and its continued impact on special effects. Today the film only exists in a greatly abridged version, with nearly half of the original footage missing. Through the original shooting script, the reader is able to reconstruct the "lost" scenes, imagining O'Brien's special effects genius. The editor also provides background information on the film's production. Many stills of the movie are included.

"The Lost World" FOUND!.......2000-03-17
For any of you fortunate enough to actually see the restored "Lost World" now completed by George Eastman House, this is an invaluable extra that reminds us just how much of this fantastic film has been missing for over 70 years. (Well, actually half of it!)
If you haven't seen the film in it's restored state, then this is the next best thing to being there.
Editor, Roy Kinnard gets us up to date with an informative introduction to the history of the film and the shooting script itself is eye-opening to read just how much story would have been there had the dinosaurs been removed.
(Rumor has it the producers were nervous that the dinosaurs would be a flop so had the screenplay written such that they could be edited out and still have a story if it was necessary.)
If you are a fan of this film or "King Kong" this is a must! The photos are great, including a lot that I've never seen anywhere.
(Sadly, as of this writing there are no plans to release the restored version of this great film on home video.)

a trip to unreadable.......2007-01-04
This attempt at discussing documentary film is fraught with difficulties for the reader. The prose is clumsy, circumstantial and muddled to the point that I found myself reading passages aloud to others for help. Unfortunately none was forthcoming. There is little excuse to buy this book when there are so many good ones such as those by Barnouw and Jacobs which area clear and informative.
A Due Question for Documentary.......2001-03-17
Representing Reality theorizes documentary in all-round perspectives. Among others, I think this book is important especially in that it raises the question of reality per se. Documentary has always been marginal not only in discourse but also in cinema industry, under the poor understanding of reality. I think Nichols's notion of "reflexivity" is a key concept itself in understanding documentary, which also provides a good alternative reading regarding what is documentary or not. I think this book will give you a great deal of food for thought, when you have ever contemplated what is real and when we become to question about what we are seeing, not only in films but also in real life.
Bill Nichols should not be allowed to write.......1999-11-21
Bill Nichols is full of words and empty of thought. You need a machete to slash through the tangled sentences in this book, and what you'll find beneath are simplistic, flawed ideas that aren't developed but buried under more verbiage. Nichols stitches suffixes and prefixes to ordinary nouns, creating monsters like "situatedness," "hyperrationality," "reconceptualization," "polyvocality," "relationality," "talismanic"(!), and the pseudo-literate's favorite word of all: "juxtaposition." Each of those words costs as much time to understand as a whole chapter of Erik Barnouw's book (which is succinct, informative and even humorous). Mr. Nichols should be sealed in a cave and his books slung into outer space, for they pollute the body of film knowledge. Don't buy "Representing Reality" unless you want to know how confused Mr. Nichols's reality is.
great book for learning about doc. concepts and issues.......1998-10-29
the book has a lot of useful insights and info about doc. it is harder than the Barnouw book because it is less chatty but it is also rich in food for thought. It takes up things like ethics and documentary style, how different kinds of documentary are similar and different, and how the human body is a really important topic in documentary, pornography and anthropology.

Book Description
Text extracted from opening pages of book: Bruckner Mahler Schoenberg DIKA NEWLIN KING'S GROWN PRESS MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS : NEW YORK COPYRIGHT 1947 BY DIKA NEWLIN Printed in the United States of America by Vail-Ballou Press, Inc. King's Crown Press is a division of Columbia University Press organized for the purpose of making certain scholarly material available at minimum cost. Toward that end,, the publishers have adopted every reasonable economy except such as would interfere with a legible format. hms First Printing: 1947 Second Printing: 1947 To my friends MARIAN PASCHAL and HENRIETTE VOORSANGER whose interest has made this work possible Acknowledgments Both author and publisher gratefully acknowledge the following per missions to use quotations, both of words and of music; without the amiable cooperation of those listed here, it would have been difficult indeed to have concluded this study. Associated Music Publishers, Inc., New York, for various quotations from works by Bruckner, Mahler and Schoenberg, Boosey and Hawkes, Inc., New York, for quotations from works by Mahler, reprinted by permission of the copyright owners, Boosey and Hawkes, Inc., New York; and also for the quotation from the Preface to Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Dodd, Mead and Co., New York, for quotation from Franz Grill parzer, by Gustav Pollak. ' E. P. Button and Co., Inc., New York, for quotations from Johannes Brahms, by Richard Specht, and from Arnold Schoenberg, by Egon Wellesz. The Greystone Press, New York, for quotation from Gustav Mahler, by Walter and Krenek, John W. Luce & Co., Boston, for quotation from Masks and Min strels of New Germany, by Percival Pollard. G. Schirmer, Inc., New York, for quotations from works by Beethoven and Bruckner, used by permission of the publisher, G. Schirmer, Inc. Arnold Schoenberg, for quotations from various works. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, for quotation from Ivory, Apes and Peacocks, by James Huneker. The Macmillan Company, New York, for quotation from Thus Spake Zarathustra, by Friedrich Nietzsche ( translated by Alexander me.)* Preface . HE IDEA of this book originally came to me during my years of study with Arnold Schoenberg in Los Angeles ( 1938-1941). At that time I was first introduced to the most radical works of Schoenberg works virtually unknown in this country so far as public performances are concerned. I felt the need of a historical background which would explain the origins of the new style. It was this which brought me to a study of the works of Mahler and Bruckner; for Schoenberg's oft expressed indebtedness to Mahler plainly indicated that the roots of Schoenberg's style might be found in Mahler's scores ( however different Mahler's music might be in texture from Schoenberg's), and the re lationship between Mahler and Bruckner seemed well established. Thence, it was but a step to the conclusion that Schoenberg is not only the heir of Bruckner and Mahler but also the heir of the great Viennese classical tradition, which they transmitted to him. It is this conclusion which I have tried to prove in the following pages; it has been my desire to portray Schoenberg's works as the culmination of several centuries of historical development, rather than as the products of a wilful icono clasm. To this end, I have attempted to place Schoenberg in the Vien nese cultural scene by analyzing, not only the musical background, but also the literary, artistic, and political background of his generation a task which I have likewise performed for the period of Bruckner and of Mahler. Such an extensive project could never have been carried out without the assistance and cooperation of those who were familiar at first hand with the milieu which I wished to reconstruct. Though space forbids detailed acknowledgments, I would like to express here some measure of my gratitude to all who helped me in any capacity to Professor Paul Henry Lang and Dr. Erich Hertzmann, of the Department of Music, Columbia

Customer Reviews:
Unfortunately, not Recommended.......2007-08-30
Why "unfortunately"? Because Chernev put a lot of hard work into this book. He DOES explain every move--even if he has to go back to obscure 1820s books to say something new about 1. d4 when we see it for the 10th time. What's more, he does this without, for the most part, repeating the old libels about the "crazy" Steinitz or the "sadistic" Alekhine, etc., used by some authors to make reading about chess "exciting" without real work. Also, Chernev's love of the subtle move and the brilliant combination come through in the book, making us all remember why we like chess in the first place.
Unfortunately, the book's analysis is simply bad. It is hard to blame Chernev for trying to simplify what is going on in complex positions--the book is, after all, aimed at beginners--but his simplification completely distorts the situation. Of the 30+ games in the book, almost *all*, apart from five or six, are symetrical open games (1. d4 d5 or 1. e4 e5) many of them using obscure openings few play nowadays (Colle system, King's gambit). Some of this is due to fashion. But a lot of it has to do with something Chernev constantly ignores or mistates, but is of cardinal importance--the *plans* of the two sides.
Putting things very crudely, The King Indian's Defense and other asymmetrical openings allow black to concentrate on other plans--"building a solid position" for example--instead of that of immediate control of the center and rapid development. Why? Because, as Botvinnik noted, with such "asymmterical" plans white's first-move advantage is less prnounced. Conversely, the King's gambit is now unpopular since the main plan for white--attack on the black monarch--had been shown to lead to no more than a draw against accurate play.
Not much of this gets into Chernev's book. For him, the only opening plans are "develop your pieces" and "control the center". For example, he says that the reason people play 1. ... Nf6 in reply to 1. d4 is "to not allow white to dominate the center with 2. e4". Similarly, he condemns 1. ... e6 is "less agressive" (in controlling central space) than 1. ... e5 in reply to 1. e4, but at least it "opens lines to two pieces", does not allow White to play the King's gambit, and is useful against "over-agressive players".
Talk about oversimplification! Chernev's analysis is, I suppose, helpful to absolute beginners, showing them what is wrong with 1. h4 intending 2. Rh3, or with 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 intending 2. Qxe5+ (which, after the "thematic" 1. ... g6, leads to 3. QxR, 4. QxN, 5. Qx anything she can get her hands on), though they too are left wondering why anybody ever plays "inferior" moves such as 1. c4 or 1. ... Nf6. For all others, Nunn's "Understanding Chess Move by Move" is so superior in every respect comparing the two would be pitiful. It's like, to quote Edward Winter, comparing a Rolce-Royce with a rattle-trap.
Such chess principles apply equally to life in general!.......2007-08-11
This book is must reading for any novice! I will never again see a chess board in the same way! Many people, books and films state that principles of martial arts or samurai philosophy apply to everyday life, so much so that they constitute a guiding philosophy. In Japan and China people apply principles from war and strategy books such as The Art of War and The Five Rings to the world of business, and to great effect. Now, many films have also tried to do this with chess, but usually fall short. They usually end up making some blah statement, such as, "We are all pawns," etc. This book contains many fascinating quotes and principles handed down from the masters. As I read them one thing that struck me was that many of these principles apply equally to real life. For instance, Chernev's main lessen in this book is that the right move is determined by the requirements of you position. You assess the situation at hand, you have a goal, and there are only certain actions that will bring that goal about. Thus, the action you take is determined by what circumstance required.
A Chess Classic.......2007-06-01
I recently worked through my copy of this book. I must say it was very enjoyable to play through the games and read Chernev's explanations of the moves and the reasons behind them. I think Chernev did a superb job, and this book is a great game collection for anyone interested in chess. Newer players will certainly learn a lot.
Good, but not the best book of its type.......2007-04-07
The idea of explaining the idea behind every move is a good. I wish that more books would do this for the Beginning and Intermediate level chessplayer.
There are several problems with this book; 1) The book is overly focused on the opening - it should spend more time going into the middlegame and endgame, and 2) It often would not answer the questions I had about a move or what was going on it the game, and 3) half the games are of the author, who is only a measly master. However, overall I can still recommend this book.
This book does not compare in quality to my favorite book, "Logical Chess, Move by Move, which just recently was updated."
Great for principles, not so great for move analysis.......2007-03-31
As the other reviews state, this book is a great way for beginners to learn general principles. However, I would recommend taking Chernev's alternative variation analysis, and in fact many of his tactical variations, with a large grain of salt, frequently they are not close to the best moves. Even his main line analysis is frequently quite wrong. For example, I'm going through game 19, and on move 15 black plays 15...Bd6. This is not a good move since it allows 16.c5!. But of the alternate move 15...Qd8, Chernev only writes "...does not look appetizing". In fact, 15...Qd8 stops white's 16.c5 and lets *black* play c5 in the next move or two, gaining equality. Playing ...c5 is what Chernev is beating up Black about in this and all the Queen's Gambit Declined games, over and over, and he misses when Black has a chance to play it!
There are many more examples of bad analysis in the other games like this. Just read through the games, absorb the general principles, and move on to more modern "move by move" books with more accurate analysis.

Not as good as I'd hoped - I returned it.......2004-11-07
The book's 600+ pages led me to believe it was going to be an in-depth study of the ten chosen sitcoms, but alas each program only gets about a 6- to 10-page writeup, followed by a huge episode guide. The ep guides are not at all compelling reading, and actually pale to guides done by fans on various websites.
There aren't a lot of photos, and the ones that are there are aligned in strange, overlapping, sometimes slanted format in a 10-page section in the book's dead center. They're B&W and actually look poor even for B&W.
This book gets one thing right: the ten shows selected were the absolute cream of the crop up to that point ("Seinfeld" would probably have bumped one of them out a few years later), but this book really doesn't add anything to the reader's enjoyment of these classics. I suggest you pass on this one.
Overall,
With insightful behind-the-scenes notes and anecdotes.......2004-02-07

Complete credits, basic episode storylines, and tallies of Emmy awards and yearly ratings make Classic Sitcoms a superb and highly recommended resource for TV fans and trivia buffs alike.
The Classic TV Bible.......2000-06-17
If you're a Nick at Nite/TV Land couch chive, this is the book to keep on the sofa at all times. I can't say more.
A serious examination of some funny shows........1999-09-21
Rather than another nostalgia-derived look at fondly remembered but essentially lame sitcoms, this book reflects critics' picks of the very best examples of the genre, then examines them with the seriousness and insight they deserve. The author is an expert on the subject--he also wrote the definitive work on the Dick Van Dyke Show--and he treats each of the ten shows, from I Love Lucy to Cheers--with thoroughness and affection. This book will enhance the viewing experience of any television fan.
Time and time again we'll want Nick at Nite to stay the same.......1998-06-23
It was a very good book. I didn't read all of it because I am an I Love Lucy fan. I also watch Bewitched and Happy Days. One thing I would like to see is an updated version of this book. Since many shows have been replaced. One thing I would not like to see is the following shows above taken off the air. I think you should make a seperate channel for shows such as 'The Brady Bunch', 'Wonder Years', and all of the newer shows you are putting on there. There are too many I love Lucy fans out and if you keep changing what is on this channel it won't be Nick at Nite anymore.
