Book Description
The Art of Walt Disney is one of Abrams' enduring classics. Thirty years and well over half a million copies after its first publication in 1973, it is still considered the definitive study of The Walt Disney Company's vast artistic achievements through the decades. The book tells the remarkable story of Walt Disney and the company he built, from Mickey Mouse to animated feature films to theme parks. Based on hundreds of interviews with Disney staff members past and present, the text is illustrated with more than 800 illustrations ranging from concept art to film stills to views of the theme-park attractions.
This revised and expanded edition covers all of the major projects since the 1995 edition, including the films Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear, and Home on the Range, as well as Disney's collaborations with Pixar: Toy Story I and II; Monsters, Inc. ; Finding Nemo (the highest-grossing animated film in history); and The Incredibles, due for release this year. The live-action films and Broadway productions are also covered, as well as the latest theme-park developments, including brand-new parks such as Tokyo DisneySea and Hong Kong Disneyland. AUTHOR BIO: Christopher Finch is a regular contributor to Architectural Digest and the author of more than 20 books, including The Art of the Lion King, Jim Henson: The Works, and Abrams' Norman Rockwell's America.

a puff piece, however spectacular the images may be.......2007-02-28
This book goes through the entire Disney legacy, in what is supposed to be art criticism. As far as it goes, the text is pretty good, but they are mere accompaniments to the photos, which is the bane of many art/design books. Finch makes an effort at being comprehensive, though ultimately - if you read through the whole thing - it comes off as a vanilla milk shake, with virtually no depth and ultimately flattering to just about everything Disney.
Moreover, the beginning of the text is far stronger than the end, reflecting hte fact that this is an update. As such, the author worked much harder and dug deeper on the sections that covered Walt Disney's work and ideas directly - the subject of the first edition and far more interesting than later work - and then feels the rest is pasted on to update it. To cover the post-Walt Disney things, many of which represent great art in and of themselves - would merit an independent work like the first volume.
Futhermore, by separating the book into discrete sections devoted to film, TV, parks, etc., the author misses one of the most important aspects of the Disney company: its work is self-reinforcing through all the media. Thus, though the early TV shows did not get enough commercial sponsorship and hence lost money, Walt Disney viewed the shows as the ultimate tool to implant his brand in the minds of the young. Even the toys were part of this, though they are almost entirely neglected in this book. It all fits together, each part morphing into the others, which Finch fails to see.
The worst failing of this book, though, is its utter lack of analysis beyond crude evocations of historical context. Though purporting to be a critic, Finch does not ponder any of the company's impact on, or as a reflection of, American culture, particularly the dark side. Why do many people (myself not among them as I essentially love the DIsney legacy) despise the way the company transforms culture into its own immediately recognizable brand? What does it say about the American predilection to recreate realities, such as a mock European village, rather than seeking out the real thing (even at similar cost)? These are tough questions.
In the end, this reads like something directly out of a PR department. I enjoyed the images and some of the reconstrctions of the films. But this offers little in the way of true criticism.
M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-17
This is such a great book with great information about the disney company and of course mickey! and lots of great pictures!
Disney Lovers Dream.......2007-01-13
If you love animations from Disney, or the Disney success story, this is a must buy. My Wife loves this.
A MUST for any and all Disney fans!!.......2006-02-23
This is not just a book for Disney art lovers -- it is a terrific background on the Disney Company as a whole and the process in the art of animation. It goes into detail as to the extent of Walt's genius and leadership abilities. Never the less, the art in this collection is phenomenal!! I personally love the preliminary sketches and the process that eventually become what you see on the screen. There is also a chapter on the role the Disney Studios played during WWII. I will cherish this edition for many years to come.
A few words of caution before you buy it..........2006-01-19
This book gives good insight into the story of the Disney company. It was nice to hear an honest account of whether each movie was a success or failure with critics and audiences, though I feel some were a little shortchanged. A book of this size should have had a chapter (or at least a full page) dedicated to each movie. And while it is heavily illustrated, the text does not in any way rely on the pictures. I guess screen shots from the movies or brochure style pictures of the parks are "art" but based on the title I was expecting more unique in depth imagery like preproduction and concept art, storyboards, construction photos (from the parks).
If you have the older Concise edition of this book, then I don't think this one is necessary. So there are stills from a few more movies, but all the classics up to Fantasia 2000 are covered in the smaller book. Besides, the best of the new movies covered is Finding Nemo, and who doesn't have that on tape or DVD? Don't spend this much money on a few screen shots, just watch your movie. And I was particularly interested in seeing some of the new parks that weren't in the other book (California Adventure and Tokyo DisneySea) but alas they accounted for about 3 pages. Just a warning because the annoying shrink wrap prevents anyone from flipping through to decide based on the contents whether or not to fork over that much money (and the cover is so enticing...).
If you have never read anything about Disney this is a great place to start, but if you already have a collection of Disney books (especially this one's concise ed.) then this one doesn't have much more to offer. And if your true passion is in the theme parks, don't let this deceptive title make you believe that equal emphasis is given to the "Magic Kingdoms". There are way better (and cheaper) books on that subject that will give you much more insight.

AN EXCELLENT STORY ARC!.......2005-05-10
I actually read this story arc in the Darkness: Original Sin trade paperback. This book collects issues # 15 - 17 of the original Darkness comic series. The book is no longer being written by Garth Ennis and that is a bit of a drawback as Malachey Coney doesn't handle dialogue as well but this was still a good story. We start as an amibitious Cardinal Innocent is sending out the Magdalena, another of those ancient powers/warriors in the Top Cow universe. She's kind of a holy warrior with the body of a super model (naturally). He arms her with the ancient Spear of Destiny, the spear which pierced Jesus on the cross which an earlier Magdalena had recovered from Hitler himself. She is sent out after Jackie Estacado, AKA the Darkness to kill what she has been programmed to believe is one of the ultimate tools of evil.
Unfortunately, the Magdelena was not prepared properly by taking part in the rituals that she needed to fully use her powers effectively. As a result, she is beaten badly by Jackie. Cardinal Innocent manages to find a fall guy in the form of another priest who takes responsiblity before a group of church inquisitors of sending the Magdelena out. We don't see what happens to the priest, but evidently it's not very pleasant.
The art is consistently excellent throughout the story and The Darkness really is an art-driven book as evidenced by two page spreads that you turn sideways ala a Playboy centerfold to view and read. Not surprisingly the subject of these two page spreads are typically scantily clad women. While Coney is no Garth Ennis, "Spear of Destiny" was a strong story with gorgeous art and enough plot to make it interesting.
Magdalena Rules.......2002-06-05
First of all, i'd like to point out that the actual title of this book is not The Darkness Vol. 3, but The Darkness: Spear of Destiny. I was not a fan of The Darkness series. I picked up the first two issues and then stopped. However, what drew me to pick this book up, was that it contains the first appearance of the Magdalena, who got her own mini series following her appearance in the Darkness issues. The mini series was drawn by Joe Benitez, who also drew the Darkness issues collected within this book. In my opinion, his work in this trade paperback is better than art in the Magdalena mini. I was surprised by how good this book is. A very entertaining story by Malachy Coney, and excellent art by Benitez. If you're a fan of dark superhero comics like Batman or Spawn, gothic horror, or other Top Cow comics female characters like the Witchblade...i guarantee you'll enjoy this book.
Book Description
An authoritative and humorous look at Hollywood's ever-changing take on love, romance, and marriage over the decades
From steamy silent classics like A Fool There Was to romantic musicals like Grease to epic schmaltz-fests like Titanic, Hollywood historian and bestselling author James Robert Parish provides a very personal (but quite factual) run-down on how the Hollywood dream factory has portrayed love, marriage, and divorce on the big screen. The Hollywood Book of Love reveals in an entertaining fashion how the attitudes and standards the audience absorbs from the movies influence their expectations in real-life relationships.
Writing with his trademark dry wit and rich knowledge of American movie history, Parish provides perceptive and amusing takes on 200 feature films and offers tantalizing sidebar factoids on everybody from Liz, Bette, and Bogie, to Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Nicole Kidman.

Irreverent guide to romantic movies.......2005-09-21
My copy of "The Hollywood Book of Love" has the subtitle "An Irreverent Guide to the Films that Raised Our Romantic Expectations." The line "From True Romance and Blushing Brides to Tawdry Trysts and Femme Fatales" appears on the back cover instead of on the front as the subtitle.
Actually, I prefer the irreverent guide subtitle because that seems to be Parish's main goal: to show how romantic movies from this (and previous) generations raised our romantic expectations to unrealistic levels. He provides highly entertaining examples of movies that create hopes for romance, sex, and love that cannot possibly be fulfilled in real life.
"The Hollywood Book of Love" works on many different levels. It provides a thorough guide book to romantic movies; it offers a behind-the-scenes look at many of the selected films; and it gives the reader some broad questions to consider about the gap between the illusion and reality of romantic love.

Writer knows Hollywood Love.......2003-07-29
This book shows a wonderful depiction of all types of love in movies from all eras. It is an easy and fun read all the way through showing the loves and heartaches through the years in some of Hollywoods greatest stories.
A must have for any true romantic... whether it's the irony of love you enjoy or just want to remember the key love stories of old.
Enjoyable, compulsive read!.......2003-07-26
Parish has written dozens of books on American film, and his knowledge is vast. This book makes shrewd use of that knowledge, but lightens it with delightful flights of humor. This makes for a enjoyable, compulsive read. The background is there, but it's not delivered in a stuffy or academic way. For example, in his section on Love Story, Parish writes: "As you sniffle through this feature, bear in mind that these characters give shallowness new meaning. For example, our clean-cut hero asks over the soundtrack mourningfully, 'What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died?' His brilliant reply includes that she was beautiful (certainly a matter of personal taste) and that 'she loved Mozart and Bach...and the Beatles.' That's the best he can come up with? Oh, brother!"
Hot Love.......2003-07-20
I always look forward to James Robert Parish's books for their research and insight, but this one really surprised me: it's a fast, fun read, perfect for a day at the beach--or anywhere!
I knew about most of the Hollywood romances described, but some of the details were fascinating. I loved the sidebar stats and notes (my eyes kept going to them first after awhile!).
The book is also handsomely set and illustrated. This is a must read, and not just for Hollywood movie lovers.
The only flaw I can think of is I wanted more when it was all over!!!
Great job!
Book Description
This engrossing book tells the tale of the Detroit duo who shook up the music world with their "candy-colored, gothic-coated world of melody, rhythm and storytelling." These unlikely-looking saviors reinvigorated the blues and blues-rock for a new generation. Writer Denise Sullivan relates The White Stripes' story with a keen eye for detail, a music lover's ear for influences and references, a fan's appreciation of the layers and subtleties, and a journalist's nose for a good story, with all its twists and curves, half-truths, and elaborate theories. Includes dozens of rare photographs, a full discography, and a song concordance. 7-1/4 x 9-1/4, 176 pages

Learning about Jack White.......2007-03-10
I thought that this might be a way to get to know more about Jack White. I find him very interesting and this seems to answer some of the questions that I have.
I enjoyed this biography!.......2005-08-19
One of the things I liked best about this book is that even though I
thought I knew all there was to know about the White Stripes, I came to
find out there's way more to explore in their music than meets the
eye-and that's kind of the whole point of the "mystery" behind them,
isn't it? More than a standard rock bio, Sullivan's book is a guidebook
for further exploration into the world of the Stripes. For example, I
really
didn't know very much about Jack and Meg's love of Bob Dylan till I read
this book and now for the first time in my life, I want to know more about
Bob Dylan-precisely because he is so important to the White Stripes!
Sullivan's personal style which fuses fact with a humorous
point-of-view kept me interested even while I read about the stuff I did
know about (like the fact they aren't really brother and sister...duh!). I
even found myself nodding in agreement (which is always a sign to me
that I'm reading the right book) to her thoughtful descriptions of the
albums and live shows. So if you think you know everything about the
White Stripes, think again because this book provides plenty of food for
thought: Not only will you find some important clues as to what the
band is about, but you'll end up with a list of further questions that you
hadn't even thought to ask before you sat down to read it!
great rock biography.......2005-08-16
I bought this book because I didn't know much about the White Stripes and wanted to know more (including, to some extent, what the big deal is). I got a lot more than I was looking for, and am very glad I read it. In addition to the expected details of their biography, I had the unexpected pleasure of discovering our shared love of their influences. I have to say that understanding the links to their predecessors really helped me develop a lot more respect and understanding for the White Stripes. The book also provides an intimate history of Meg and Jack as well and the "scene" they matured in. Unlike many rock biographies, this book doesn't feel like an attempt to cash in on a band's popularity or shore up their celebrity mythology. Instead it is an honest analysis of individuals and their music by someone who clearly loves them - but is still capable of being objective when necessary.
Who is this book about?.......2005-04-12
I love the White Stripes. I hated this book. I gave it two stars simply because it about the White Stripes and has a few cute pictures of Meg. This entire book reads like someone you know trying to show off about how much she knows about the music industry. After about page 50, you just want to scream, "I get it already! You know a lot about music. Please talk about the White Stripes now!" I got the feeling that the author didn't care about the band so much as just showing off her knowledge to a large audience. This is perfectly illustrated on page 85 when she is talking about the liner notes on De Stijl and closes a paragraph with the sentence, "I could elaborate, but I won't." It is the equivalent of a kid on the playground running around yelling, "I've got a secret," and refusing to tell anyone. The entire book seems like it was written because Sullivan wanted attention and for others to envy her knowledge of the Detroit music scene. The White Stripes seem to have little to do with it.
denise does the white stripes right.......2004-06-18
denise sullivan does the white stripes right. you can put down your magazines now. you want to get any deeper into all things white stripes? denise gets you to the meat of the -- in fact, she gets down to the bone of what makes jack and meg tick by tracing back their roots. from early gigs, to upholstery apprenticing to bar tending and marriage by way of Howlin' Wolf and Lorreta Lynn and the kings and queens of the blues. and such a beautiful package. great pictures. you'll want to hold on to this "rock book" for a long long long time.

A great FF8 companion.......2007-09-05
I found this book to be an improvement on the FF7 book. The directions are easier to follow, and it includes a lot of important information. I would have liked the names of the Cards to be easier to read - dark font on a dark background is too hard to reference for anything - and the beastialityairy was too hard to decipher. But that's a small point when you compare it to the failure to continue with the total coverage in the FF9 book. This book told me what I needed to know about the little things that I missed - the weapons, the GFs, the magazines (not enough room), and locations like the Islands or the Deep Sea Research Center. It was tremendously helpful. Still is.
beautiful.......2007-07-17
fast shipping, perfect condition, all around great, happy with my purchase. I know generic comment but I can't think of any other way to describe it
Unorganized, but factual enough.......2007-06-15
This guide was very very good in getting me through the game the first time I played it.
HOWEVER, when I went back through to collect all the little items that I had missed, I learned quickly how badly the guide leads you to them.
I think instead of giving 2-10 boxes of short comments, I think it needs to list them in order.
Yes I know that those boxes prevent spoilers, however, they don't aid me at all in finding X item on map Q.
Definitely not one of Cassady's best guides, but it helps complete the game to the bare minimum.
The Best strategy guide out there........2007-05-07
This has to be the best strategy guide out there that I have seen for this game. It is detailed on where to go for the side quests and has great strategies for defeating your enemies. A must buy.
good.......2007-03-19
im glad i was able to play VIII and it's such an amazing game just like IX is too. like the same with it, the guide could have been better but it's still good
Book Description
Focusing on the most destructive fires of modern times, Nicholas Faith details the work of these investigators as they piece together causes of ignition, observe how fire spreads and smoke flows, and attempt to understand the behavior of those unlucky souls caught in the most fearsome infernos. Their work can convict arsonists or form the bases of legislation-making buildings safer for all of us.
Including information about the cataclysmic conflagrations at the MGM Grand and Our Lady of the Angels School, Blaze features first hand testimonies from people whose lives have been scarred by their encounters with fire. Nicholas Faith examines the fire-fighters who risk their lives tackling the blazes, and the investigators, safety engineers, and forensic scientists who scour gutted rubble heaps in the hope of understanding mankind's most complicated ally-and its most dangerous foe.

I would like pictures of the scenes to help understand. But I do recommend it. It is the first of its kind I have seen.
Good Information: Diagrams Sorely Needed.......2006-05-23
This book provides good information about fire behavior. One common theme of this book is the speed with which indoor fires spread. The rapid, sometimes nearly explosive growth of fires is a major factor in people not evacuating premises sooner. The rapid fire growth owes to the feedback effects of indoor fires. One of these effects is the flashover, a common phenomenon. Another is the "trench-hugging" effect, as exhibited by the King's Cross London subway fire. Still another is the radiative effect of a low ceiling, combined with a flammable plastic wall covering which releases burning drops onto yet-nonignited seats, as exemplified by the Stardust disco fire in Dublin, which grew from an innocuous one-seat fire to a multiple-seat, multiple-row deadly conflagration in only 2-3 minutes, and totally consuming of the interior in merely 5 minutes.
Modern interior materials, notably polyurethane, can produce vast amounts of carbon monoxide and suffocating, blinding smoke in just a minute or two. Although the author Faith does not discuss this further, the water-decomposing temperatures of HTA's help the reader understand why the magnesium-thermite incendiary bombs of WWII could not be extinguished by water. And, although the destruction of the World Trade Center on 911, of course, predates this book, the information about the One Meridian Plaza fire of 1991 helps the reader understand the former, albeit on a much smaller scale. In both cases, several floors of a high rise burned out of control, completely engulfing the floors, and could not be put out. Although the One Meridian Plaza building did not collapse, extensive cracking of rock material and the twisting of metal girders almost did cause a collapse.
A major shortcoming of this work is its lack of diagrams. It would be so much easier to follow what the author is saying about the British subway fire and the Dublin disco fire had these been provided. Hopefully, a subsequent edition of this book will rectify this situation.
Good Read.......2003-07-01
Very informative book. Needed to list more details of the actual forensics of fire and how it acts.

Pretty good, with minor editing and proofreading errors.......2000-12-13
It was a pretty good overview of fire investigations. I was bothered by proofreading errors.
Readers of chapter 3 (p34) strained to understand how a fire could creep along a low incline rather than flame upward. They were told this was due to the "...so-called colander effect, whereby jets stick to walls." If they were imagining some sort of sieve, they were mislead. The effect which causes fluid jets to bend around gentle curves is properly called the Coanda effect, named after a hydraulics theoretician.
A few other minor errors like a "Kray-2" supercomputer mar the account, which is otherwise good reading.
I was happy to see a chapter discounting the widespread belief that crowds of people tend to panic in fires.
