Wonderful collection of marine paintings.......2006-10-26
Geoff Hunt is possibly the most talented marine artist since Montague Dawson. This book contains dozens of prints of his most beautiful paintings, which in many cases are complete with earlier versions from line drawings to colour sketches. There are many descriptions of how the paintings came to be created, from who commissioned each one to the ideas the artist had about how to execute the commission and how he turned it real.
Most of the subjects concern warships of Nelson's era, though there are a few drawings and paintings of more modern warships or civilian ships. in particular, there are many paintings of the ships of the line in which Nelson served, many of them illustrating real incidents from Nelson's service career. The book also contains a large number of paintings illustrating ships and scenes from the Jack Aubrey novels written by Patrick O'Brien. (In fact, many of the ships which appear in these novels were real historical units which are faithfully reproduced in the book covers and other paintings included - in Hunt's words, "In most cases Patrick press-gangs real ships into his novels.")
The book also includes a number of studies of United States sailing ships, including the first US ship of the line (America) being built, pictures of the USS Constitution, and "General Washington's Wolfpack." Much as it pains me to mention a gentleman who was born in Whitehaven (the town where I live) but subsequently came back commanding an enemy squadron and raided the town, this book also includes some beautiful pictures of naval scenes from the life of John Paul Jones.
Geoff Hunt manages to make ships of the line and frigates from the era of fighting sail incredibly beautiful, but he also goes to some length to make his pictures realistic, even consulting the original logbooks of the ships concerned when he is trying to capture real feats of seamanship. He also consulted the original signal code books before painting the signal flags flown by his warships, so they spell out appropriate messages in the codes of the period.
If you are attracted to pictures of ships from the era of fighting sail, you will love this book.

The clarity and color of the reproductions of marine paintings in this book are nothing less than superb. While the individual styles and, to some extent, the specific subject matter of the five artists vary, I find it impossible to single out any one of them as being "better" than the others. Each is a highly talented artist who brings the past to life in a most convincing manner. While men-of-war are probably the most frequent subject of the paintings in this book, merchant vessels and ships of exploration and even of pleasure are not neglected. It is pure joy to just leaf through this volume and gaze at the wealth of images. Anyone who is fascinated by the sea and sailing ships cannot fail to be enchanted by this book.

The ESSENTIALL book for anyone wanting to "get their toe wet" in anime!.......2006-12-16
I have been an anime fan now for about 6 or 7 years, and like most here in the U.S., I got my anime roots through undam Wing (I am still a HUGE Gundam fan). Anyway, I saw features about this book in some magazines I read, so I went to my local comic book store to buy it. It showed me EVERYTHING I needed to at least get a basic understanding of the themes and different variations of anime. Now, I enjoy all styles of anime and am even beginning to build a small collection. I would also recommend at least checking out "What's Japanese in Japanese Animation". I know I sure will.

This book is much better at talking about anime fan culture than anime itself. If you're interested in knowing more about the films, there are better resources such as "Anime Explosion", "Samurai from Outer Space" or, for the more academically inclined, "Anime from Akira to Princess Mononoke"
Anime Essentials.......2005-08-23
This is an excellent book about the Anime genre. It describes not only the history of anime but the various styles and elements that make anime unique.
The author includes recomendations in the different anime styles and makes parental recomendations as well.
Elements of Japanese culture are woven into the descriptions making this an all around good read and reference book.
There is also a video animation called "Otaku no Video" which complements this book and has a similar cover.
If you want to learn more about anime or are a fan pick both of these titles!
An excellent starting place.......2005-03-15
I'm too old to have discovered Japanese manga and anime in my youth, but I've made up for that the past few years. Being interested in Japanese culture and literature generally, I had some understanding of why anime is the way it is, and why it's so much different from American or European graphic art, but reading this well-written book, I found there was a great deal I had missed. Poitras writes from the fan's point of view, so he knows what questions he should be addressing -- everything from the "big eye" mania, to the difference between hentai and mainstream manga, to the nervousness among the U.S. morals police about "foreign" art, to actually setting up and publicizing a fan group, plus the ins and outs of model kits, imported publications, and so on. There's also an excellent rundown of recommended anime titles and series, which I've photocopied as a checklist. This book doesn't tell you everything you need to know, but it's a good place to start.

For those wishing a more comprehensive history on DJ culture, you will be better served by reading "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life". I expected a lot more from this book, although I did like the informal structure of the book as it reads as if the author was having a conversation with a room full of DJs. But it contains so many DJ's that no one has ever heard of...and I get the feeling that the nightclub DJ is not well represented...nor is the music industry itself. The section on record pools is abysmal! After 27 years in the music industry, I may be a little jaded, but I expect a person to at least get it right.
Great Light Reading........2002-08-14
This book is great for picking up between breaks from spinning, or for reading on the way to work on the train while you think about your turntables at home, but it's not an in-depth account of DJing like "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life."
I felt the author was enthusiastic about the music and was knowledgeable of its history, but the "Meet the DJ" sections and the hundreds of quotes sometimes hindered the flow of the mix.
I consider this book a companion to other DJ books.
Beginers Only.......2001-08-26
I've been spining records for well over 15 years in one of the hardest and most competitive markets in the USA(SF,Ca). It is a good book for the clueless DJ, but I wish there where more profiles of the Pioneering and Independent Blue collar DJ's less on the DJ as part of a band(DJ with a major label contract). And where is the LARRY LEVAN, WALTER GIBBONS, RON HARDY, FRANKIE, TONY, JELLYBEAN and GRANDMASTER FLASH profiles, ommiting these guys is a sin. Also the author should have included a section on the DJ as producer (D.I.T.C. crew). The words of wisdom by Fracios K and David Mancuso are the only redeaming factors of this book. It seems this book has a hidden agenda, promote dj's who are who don't need it. Most of the profiles and quotes are from New Schoolers who were never into music until they took there first "E" (Dj Rap). This book has a good idea but it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the craft.
DJ's and non-DJ's will truly love this book........2000-11-16
I am going on my 2nd reading of this book and I got 10x more out of it the second time around, it's truly fascinating how it takes you on a journey from early 70's and the first "true" DJ's all the way to the present state of dance music. Meet over 40 DJ's in interviews from all types of genres along with comments from the cream of the crop in the DJ world throughout the entire book. If you are a DJ, this book is a MUST....if you are thinking about getting into DJing or love the dance music scene this book is also a must (but in small letters). Every DJ is in search of that perfect mix and not the "train wreck" and this book is far from a train wreck like some of the other reviewers had referred to. I'm sure if you appreciate the DJ culture that you will also appreciate this great read.
Almost interesting, not too helpful.......2000-07-21
I guess I just don't get it. Maybe my man was firing up when he wrote this. It's got stuff about some DJ's doin all this stuff but it didn't help me none and I am a DJ! Curt just got to realize that most odf us DJ'S are not superstar and we can't get away with all that in our real DJ jobs. He kind of just talks about all this cutlure stuff on and on. Its OK but I just didn't think this was to helpfull.

I agree with all the negative reviews on this page. The rest of the guide is awesome, but the locations of the Horseshoes, and Oysters are off, sometimes way off. I finally had to write down the places where they were so I would not forget. not much thanks to editors, but on the other hand, they made a great guide, sans the location maps.

I don't think that BradyGames has published a corrected version, which they could offer in exchange for the flawed version. However, they have released corrected information on their website:

Comparison of PS2 to XBOX and PC Version.......2007-10-02
I have owned both versions of this guide, and I ended up giving away the PS2 Version. It was very inaccurate in some of the locations of items. For a specifice example, the locations of the Photo ops in San Fierro. The locations were not accurate, and not even matched up correctly by number. Even some of the horseshoe locations were completely inaccurate that they were not even the correct location, which annoyed me because I spent a large amount of time searching for something that was not there. I own a PS2, but I use the XBOX & PC version because of its accuracy. There is no real difference, as the guide does not tell you which button needs to be pressed, so the XBOX version still fits.
Also, for those who I know are curious, the XBOX version gives more insight on the dating and "coffee" aspects, unlike the PS2, which skips over it.

This guide is in NO WAY easy to use. No index or table of content, and being as big as it is it's not easy to search through without them. However the content is very good, but you can save yourself some money and just Google 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas online strategy guide' and you'll find one with the same info,help,tips,secrets,etc you need to complete the game with 100% progress for free.

The book was excellent but for those who have a PC would prefer the
X BOX hints also have hints for PC. The light was shining on those who had X BOX not a PC. It does not suggest any of the schools which makes it difficult for those who have trouble, lets say in driving school.
Good book!.......2005-08-19
I actually just found out that Bradygames released 2 books, (PS2, and XBOX + PC) for this game. This XBOX + PC Book is almost completely accurate in terms of where it says items or locations should be. Well, I should say that the maps in the "Odd Jobs" chapter are 100% accurate. The maps in the beginnings of the other chapters are -slightly- off (no idea why though), but if you like to explore in the GTA games, a rough location plus a description is all you need!
Lots of maps, Racing maps, weapon locations, actual mission descriptions + storyline, a huge "Odd Jobs" chapter explaining every THING you can do if you're not on a mission, sprays, camera shots, horseshoes, bike jumps (unique stunt bonuses), and oysters will keep you busy for a long time if you're after the 100% completion mark. In addition, the last 5 things I mentioned above have in-game pictures in case you just can't find it.
I recommend it. It makes a good addition to the game itself.

A biography overviews her rise to fame, her three marriages and five children, and her death in a grisly automobile accident at an early age. Each chapter contains annotated entries for her work in that media, providing cast and credit listings, plot summaries, review excerpts, and commentary. Appendices list her appearances on magazine and record covers, and an annotated bibliography discusses additional sources of information.

An Excellent Source for Jayne Mansfield Memorabilia.......2005-11-28
I disagree with the previous reviewers of the contents of this book. There are rare Jayne pictures. However, the bio-bibliography's purpose is to give a Jayne Mansfield collector a great reference source for collecting. Jocelyn Faris did an excellent job in her research. There are countless souces for newspaper collecting, album collecting, magazine collecting, and other surprises. I for one was able to prove that a dress I bought worn by Jayne Mansfield was the real mccoy by Faris's research. The book is a great tool for your collecting on Jayne Mansfield and a must if you are a Jayne fan. It is well worth every cent you pay for the book. Enjoy, you will not be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a 100 page picture book of Jayne, then you will be.
Where is Jayne Baby..........2000-11-20
This book was entirely too exspensive for the content. There was a short dissappointing biography, lists of rather meaningless things, and only a few photos. The author should be ashamed for ignoring the image of Jayne Mansfield and her loving, intelligent personality...the very things that made her famous and keeps her alive in our hearts and minds. Jayne deserves more than a high priced assemblage of paper that offers little to the reader.
A book full of boring lists.......1999-09-20
This book is quite disappointing... only some meager pages of biography, a handful of rather bad pictures...the rest are boring lists of records, awards etc. I expected much more of this book! I was looking for a load of info along with beautiful pictures.
