Book Description
Meeting. Wooing. Dating. Mating. Wanting sex. Having sex. Regretting sex. Recovering from sex. Talking. Not talking. Proposing. Refusing. Marrying. Unmarrying. Remarrying . . . Here is the dance of true love captured at all its most outrageously funny moments--the graceful and the awkward, the blissful and the tormented.
Here is meeting made easy at the "Mate Mart," Rilke as an aphrodisiac, and marriage as a daunting threshold ("And do you, Rebecca, promise to make love only to Richard, month after month, year after year, and decade after decade, until one of you is dead?").
Here is love between all sorts: children too young to know and adults old enough to know better. Between a vampire and a lady ("I think I can change him"), Narcissus and himself, women and their past paramours, men and their current possibilities ("Kathy, I'm updating my files. Do you still love me?").
Here are pragmatic approaches ("Let's date to see if we should go out"), rose-colored approaches, no-frills approaches ("Let's do it, let's fall in love"), and polite approaches ("Can I trouble you for a sexual favor?"). Here are the inimitably illuminating approaches to love from all the master New Yorker cartoonists from James Thurber to Robert Mankoff, from Peter Arno to Roz Chast, from Charles Addams to Victoria Roberts.
The agony and the ecstasy of love (well, maybe a little more of the agony) are here hilariously revealed!

Marital Gift.......2005-08-05
The book makes a perfect little gift for those just married who WILL evolve into the couples depicted in the New Yorker cartoons. Hopefully the book offers them a sense of humor for the inevitible and thus helps them.
In brief...a great marital aid for the nieve.
Many sides to the love polygon, good and bad.......2005-03-24
There are many sides to the love polygon and many of them are examined in this collection of cartoons. By far, my favorite is on page 86, where an aged man has a young woman on his lap and looking at an aged woman who is giving him a stern look. All are angels and the man is saying, "Buzz off Louise! That was only till death us did part." On page 45, an unhappy couple are in the office of a marriage counselor and the man says, "No heroic measures." This is very funny stuff. I loved them all, love songs fill the airways, but the real world is much more like the messages in these cartoons.
A mildly twisted look at love.......2001-12-15
"The New Yorker Book of True Love Cartoons" brings together 102 pages of cartoons from 46 different artists. Each cartoonist is represented by 1 to 6 examples of his/her work. The artists include Charles Addams, Lee Lorenz, Victoria Roberts, William Steig, and others; because of this diversity of artists, the book has a good variety of drawing styles.
Under the general topic of love, these cartoons cover such areas as sex, marriage, infidelity, jealousy, conflict, sexual politics, and miscommunication.
A few of my favorites: A woman at a bar tells a man, "If you quote Rilke again, I'm just going to have to take my bra off" (p. 26). Wife to husband, at home: "You may be from Mars, but the children and I are still from Westchester" (27). Categories in a Valentine's Day cards rack: "SWM TO SF," "GBF TO SWF," "DWM TO SGF" (61). And finally, a man, fully dressed with a coat and tie, and a woman, stark naked, sit in chairs at home facing away from each other. He says, "Any plans for this evening, hon?" (100).
The book gave me a few smiles and chuckles, but not much more than that. If you like some relatively tame humor about love, I recommend this book.
Cynical, Scathing Lines from Burnt-Out Relationships.......2001-04-07
I was disappointed in this book. The title led me to expect heart-warming humor about love. Instead, what I got was mostly a series of cynical perspectives on infatuation gone wrong. As in some other New Yorker cartoon collections, this one also lacks an integrating essay. The drawings are often good, but the lines make these cartoons. I have included some to give you a flavor of the volume. If you are getting over a soured relationship, this book may help you to brighten up a bit.
Older man, asleep in front of television set. Wife calls. "Yoo-hoo. Time to climb the stairway to paradise."
Woman holding hands with Count Dracula look-alike, addressing an older couple (presumably her parents). "I know. But I think I can change him."
Young man to girl friend's parents in their living room. "Mr. and Mrs. Ackerman, I'll come to the point. I'm deeply in love . . . and I'd like to move in . . . ."
Couple reading sedately in bed. "Why, you're right. Tonigh isn't reading night, tonight is sex night."
Man on telephone. ". . . I'm . . . madly in love with you . . . can't eat . . . can't sleep . . . can't live without you. But that's not why I called."
Unhappy older couple in marriage counsellor's office. Man says. "No heroic measures."
Woman to female friend about man in next room. "I've got him right where I want him, not that I don't want him."
Is there someone else, Narcissus?"
Couple in living room. "Well, who made the magic go out of our marriage -- you or me?"
You get the idea.
The best advice I ever got about love was to plan to give far more than I planned to receive after marrying. That would mean that each of us would receive a sense of being appreciated that would allow our love to build. And it worked.
When you are falling in love, I suggest that you both go through Relationship Rescue and The Relationship Rescue Workbook together. If you do that, you probably won't ever need them later on because your relationship won't need rescuing.
Give and look for the best!
Swooning and sighing over these, this book is a must!.......2000-02-14
Relationships. Who wouldn't want to try to understand a whole lot more about the opposite sex, either through through dating, marriage, divorce and yes, just plain sexual parody pictures that this funny collection is full of. I think this should be a mandatory gift to any couple tying the knot, they would maybe then try to see and learn what the other one is thinking a whole lot better. Get this book!

Customer Reviews:
Movie Manga.......2007-08-22
A fun picture retelling of the film with a "manga" feel. We have a copy of the same thing in the Japanese (purchased at the Ghibli Museum), so it was fun to get a version that our young readers could read on their own. A fairly easy read for middle readers. A nice, concise retelling without cumbersome details. The manga-like character introduction at the beginning was a fun touch.
If your kid likes the movie, he'll love the book too.......2007-02-21
Our toddler has had a Kiki obsession ever since we showed him the movie. We bought him this book and the Totoro book and he loves both - so much that we no longer watch the movies. The books are long and filled with lots of pictures from the movies. They are broken into chapters so you can read one or two before bedtime. You pretty much need to love the movies before reading the books. The stories in the books are only highlights of the movies but still do a good job of capturing the interesting moments.

Book Description
With her astounding beauty and enigmatic persona, Greta Garbo is the ultimate Hollywood icon. Though many books have tried to unlock the mystique of the "Swedish Sphinx" by focusing primarily on her personal life, Greta Garbo: A Cinematic Legacy is the first to pay serious attention to what made her an icon-her 24 Hollywood films.
Celebrating the centenary of her birth, the book draws extensively on interviews, letters, and newly accessible M-G-M production files to chronicle Garbo's career from her American debut in 1926 to her self-imposed retirement in 1941 at the height of her popularity. A wealth of film stills, production photographs, and portraits-many previously unpublished, all beautifully reproduced from pristine prints-combine with Mark Vieira's engrossing text to bring vividly to life the actress who inspired the critic Kenneth Tynan to declare: "What, when drunk, one sees in other women, one sees in Garbo sober." AUTHOR BIO: Mark A. Vieira is a photographer, film historian, and the author of Abrams' acclaimed Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits, Sin in Soft Focus: Pre-Code Hollywood, and Hollywood Horror: From Gothic to Cosmic. He lives in Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
superb tribute.......2005-09-29
U nusually informative survey of Garbo's career with background material on her artistry rather than just her personal life
wonderful pictures
Garbo Fans will want to be "alone" with this beautiful book!.......2005-09-22
The Swedish Sphinx Greta Garbo (1905-1990 was "an enigma wrapped up in mystery" to most people. However, in this out-
standing book you will come to know her for what she is best
remembered for: her movies!
Viera analyses each of Garbo's films from her first silent
feature "Torrent" through to her last talkie "Two Faced Woman."
In between these two films you will:
a. Have a in-depth analysis of each of the films
b. See the secrets revealed of such masters of photography as
William Daniels, Hurrell and Bull who lit Garbo to perfection.
c. Learn of Garbo's torrid and tortured affair with John Gilber
d. Learn about her great director Stiller and her work with such American directors as Clarence Brown and others.
e. Explore the business side of her relationship with MGM
as she dealt with moguls such as LB Meyer and boy wonder Irving
Grant Thalberg,
Viera is a photographer and film historian who makes the life
and career of Garbo come alive after all these years. I have enjoyed his earlier: "Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits" and "Sin in
Sof-Focus" always profiting from the enjoyable hours spent in his
company.
This is an essential book for any Garbo or movie fan of the golden era of Hollywood! A true delight!
Buy it!.......2005-09-22
Any book put out by Abrams has my vote and a place on my book shelf. This book on Garbo is no exception. Without reading a word her story is told through the fabulous photographs. A must for fans of classic film, Garbo (obviously!) and photography buffs!
Amazing!
Absolutely fantastic.......2005-08-16
This is yet another book for the ultimate Garbo fan. The pictures are absolutely radiant and clear, and even more photos of Garbo that have never been seen before. Vieira's take is an extremely interesting one - taking a close look at each and every film through Garbo's growth of her own true art while intertwining more of the studio politics involved from documentation during the time of every single one of her films. The way he appreciates her for her acting ability is refreshing for any Garbo lover. This book is like the newest drug that makes you even more addicted to watching her movies.
Vieira does have interesting speculations about what was really happening during certain peculiar abscences in her time at the studio, what were the real causes for conflict with Thalberg and Louis B. Mayer, etc., based on letters and documents that were found or not found during his research. Even though you may not be completely swayed some of his suggestions, they are still very intriguing discoveries about her life during her film career and keep the mind wondering about the wonderful and mysterious Garbo.
This book is a must have for anyone even remotely interested in Garbo or this time period of film. Vieira also adds bits of information throughout about cameras and photography from the silent to the sound era - very interesting technical facts woven in about what equipment people working in a large studio at the time were dealing with - not boring in any way shape or form. Thank you Vieira! I highly recommend his other books, too.
Book Description
"You Better Work!" is the first detailed study of underground dance music or UDM, a phenomenon that has its roots in the overlap and cross-fertilization of African American and gay cultural sensibilities that have occurred since the 1970s. UDM not only predates and includes disco, but also constitutes a unique performance practice in the history of American social dance.
Taking New York City as its geographic focus, "You Better Work!" shows how UDM functions in the lives of its DJs and dancers, and how it is used as the primary identifier of an urban subculture shaped essentially by the relationships between music, dance, and marginality. Kai Fikentscher goes beyond stereotypical images of club and disco to explore the cult and culture of the DJ, the turntable and vinyl recordings as musical instruments, and the vital relationship between music and dance at underground clubs. Including interviews, photographs, and an extensive discography, this ethnographic account tells the story of a celebration of collective marginality through music and dance
Customer Reviews:
Accessible and Insightful.......2007-01-13
Kai's work is a rarity in ethnomusicology; it's accessible, entertaining, and enjoyable to read. His inclusion of 12 inch singles, top UDM charts, DJ and equipment photographs, in addition to his on personal exposes in relationship to the house scene in NYC make this study a rarity within a discipline full of bickerings over authenticity, theoretical concepts and musical hierarchies. "You Better Work!" is a rallying cry for aspiring musicologists and music fans alike. If you danced during this period, it'll bring back those sweet memories of Mr. Fingers, Frankie Knuckles, Ru Paul, Acid and the like.
Great book.......2006-11-15
This is a great book. It is extremely accessible. I am using it with great success for an Introduction to Ethnomusicology course that I am teaching at a Liberal Arts College. The students like the book very much. It stimulates a good deal of in-class discussion. I would highly recommend this work for anyone interested in music, dance, ethnomusicology, urban studies, popular culture, popular music, American studies, and more... It is the kind of book that affords multiple points of entry. Bravo Kai Fikentscher
An Excellent Reference in Underground Dance Music.......2006-06-02
If you're looking for a book that's an excellent reference for Underground Dance Music in New York City, then "You Better Work!" by Kai Fikentscher is great reading!
A cornerstone contribution to the exploration of underground dance music culture.......2006-02-15
Kai Fikentscher's evolutionary study and rounded presentation of New York's underground dance music and culture is a lonely triumph for a subject matter that desperately requires equal exploration of peer contributing U.S. cities such as Chicago, Detroit and Washington D.C.
"You Better Work!" is a straight edge to which much of what has been said about underground dance music culture should be realligned.
It's evident through well-crafted and intricately expressed text that the author has really done his homework. His book shines, especially when compared to similar historical efforts that clearly lack the consistent impact found in "You Better Work!".
Not only should those familiar with underground dance music absorb this essential reading, but the effort should be required academically, with particular regard to music, culture and art.
In addition to explaining fundamental concepts and techniques, Fikentscher details an often ill-reported but critical importance of UDM - the DNA of African, African American, Latino, Gay and a dejected segment of American society which defines the fabric of underground dance music culture.
The Underground Unleashed.......2003-06-04
This text is the unrivaled standard for anyone truly seeking insights into the rich culture of Underground Dance Music. No long is house music an urban legend, but this book invites debate, theory, and growth based on a solid foundation of research, interaction, and presentation. From the halls of academia to the dark places where the underground lurks; each and every reader benefits from Kai's research.
If your a fan of techno... read this book.
Classics? Read.
Soulful... get to know this text.
... then Work!

Book Description
Recently, countless people have started playing poker, hoping to quit their jobs and strike it rich. Sadly, most of these "professional" players will wind up broke. While many people play, few win consistently.
In Getting Started in Hold 'em, noted poker authority Ed Miller guides you onto the winning path. As someone who made the leap from beginner to professional in less than a year and a half, Ed is uniquely qualified to show new players the quickest route to hold 'em success.
This book presents the critical principles that expert players use: preflop hand valuation, domination, betting for value, protecting your hand, semi-bluffing, pot equity, pot odds, implied odds, free card plays, the importance of stack size, why chips change value in tournaments, and much more.
Whether you want to play limit, no limit, or tournament hold 'em, this book provides you a solid foundation. It's perfect, not just for the would-be pro, but for anyone who wants a serious edge on the competition. Getting Started in Hold 'em teaches you more than just how to play; it teaches you to win.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent starter book.......2007-09-28
I have played poker for years, but Hold'Em is a very different game and Ed Miller's book Getting Started in Hold'Em is an excellent introduction. Other books I've bought seem to assume the reader already has some experience at Hold'em, but I was looking for information before sitting down to a game. Without condescending, Miller explains the game in detail and shows the differences in analysis and strategy from other poker games.
Best introductory text for the new player........2007-09-23
I agree with the reviewer that said that this book has replaced Lee Jones' book as the best introductory text for beginning players. Where I differ from most reviewers is in the idea that this is only a "beginners" book. I disagree. This book is great for anyone who plays poker including advanced players in that it acts as reinforcement for concepts we know but sometimes forget or ignore. It basically explains advanced concepts in a simple way and for that reason it is valuable to anyone. I remember that even though I was already a winning player when I read this book, it still improved and strengthened my understanding of concepts such as pot equity, the danger of hand domination, importance of aggression and so on. If I had a close friend just starting out in hold 'em, this would be the first book I would recommend to him, followed by Millers other classic, "Small stakes hold 'em- Winning big with expert play."
Great book, you can't go wrong with this one.
Getting Started in Hold'Em.......2007-03-08
I have read four books on holdem poker and this has the best and most understandable format of any of them. I would recommend it to all beginners and to most intermediate players also, that are interested in improving their game.
Fantastic introduction.......2007-01-05
GSHE is the perfect book to begin learning about Texas Hold 'em. It covers limit and no-limit ring games, and various tournament formats. It gives you a really solid base of knowledge, that will steady out your game and allow you to move on to the next level.
An Excellent Introduction to Limit Hold 'Em.......2006-06-14
Professing to address both of the most popular forms of hold 'em (limit and no limit), Ed Miller's first solo effort does a terrific job providing useful approaches for the former. The first 35 pages are spent as a cursory review of hand/board reading and rules/regs, which may be necessary for some. However, from page 35, and through the next 80 pages, the limit hold 'em section is absolutely terrific, as Ed takes you through an in-depth analysis of the play of 9 hands from all manner of positions on the table. The best aspect of these hand examples is the marriage of visual (you see a theoretical hand played from deal to river in most cases) applications of such points as:
- Protecting your hand.
- Saving pots, not extra bets.
- Value betting the later streets.
- Pot equity
- Semi-bluffing
- Pot odds/Implied Odds
- Strategic Advantages (Pre- and Post-flop)
The no limit and tournament sections are weaker, but the fact that the limit section is so well organized and composed more than makes up for their shortcomings as the theories can be applied to NL play. Besides, most of the NL material is more thoroughly addressed in Ed's new effort (NL Hold 'Em: Thoery and Practice).
I've been playing hold 'em (admittedly mostly no limit) for 2.5 years, having been able to advance to $5/$10 levels, and found a re-read of this short and sweet book (especially the 80 pages of limit material) to be a terrific refresher, and so believe it would serve as a great intro to the game.

Book Description
1966—The first Star Trek pilot, “The Cage,” is aired.
1977—Star Trek II, a new television show featuring the original cast, is proposed—and never made.
1979—Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the first in what would become a long line of feature films, is released.
1987—A totally new Star Trek television show premieres—a show that would become one of the most popular syndicated series of all time, spawn two more Trek-inspired shows, and start another series of successful feature films. Star Trek: The Next Generation is born—and science fiction television is changed forever.
The Trekker’s Guide to the Next Generation reveals what went into—and was left out of—the seven television seasons and two feature films about the crew of the second Enterprise. Hal Schuster, a long-time, prominent chronicler of the Star Trek phenomenon, details just how the show was created, and how it changed following the death of Star Trek originator Gene Roddenberry. He traces the history of The Next Generation from the cancellation of a popular program to the beginnings of a box-office serial smash.
Using information culled from interviews, the show’s own bible, and other sources,
The Trekker’s Guide to The Next Generation takes you inside the popular phenomenon. Read character profiles and biographies of the actors who brought them to life. Get plot summaries for each of the 177 television episodes, plus guest stars, innovations, and bloopers. Learn what happened between James T. Kirk’s command and the debut of the new Enterprise with Captain Jean-Luc Picard at the helm. Review Star Trek science, comparing factual physics and the writers’ flights of fancy.
Totally unauthorized and uncensored
The Trekker’s Guide to The Next Generation tells you what the producers at Paramount Pictures don’t want you to know!
