Mr. Danto argues that recent developments in the artworld, in particular the production of works of art that cannot be told from ordinary things, make urgent the need for a new theory of art and make plain the factors such a theory can and cannot involve. In the course of constructing such a theory, he seeks to demonstrate the relationship between philosophy and art, as well as the connections that hold between art and social institutions and art history. The book distinguishes what belongs to artistic theory from what has traditionally been confused with it, namely aesthetic theory and offers as well a systematic account of metaphor, expression, and style, together with an original account 0f artistic representation. A wealth of examples, drawn especially from recent and contemporary art, illuminate the argument.

I found this book very difficult to read. The sentences are very long and the vocabulary is high up there, especially for those who aren't philosophy majors. Some of his ideas are interesting, but I don't think he needed to write a book this thick to illustrate them. If you are a person who hates those who don't get to the point, then you'll hate this book. Unfortunately, if you have this text required for class, you will have to buy it. None of its text is available online even in the online libraries. There are also no study notes that I know of that is available on the web.

One of the best philosophical works of the latter 20th century. Ranks alongside Goodman's 'Fact, Fiction and Forecast'. Of interest not merely to philosophers of aesthetics but also to anyone interested in problems of representation and ontology. A must for any serious student of the arts.

For any scholar of aesthetics or modern art theory this book isa must. It only falls short in establishing a general theory of art that is applicable to all art forms (such as architecture and music), which Danto claims to be doing (but who has not?). Still, his insight remains crucial to understanding art forms and their meaning in the 20th century.

Favorite Movie Guide.......2005-12-20

I have been buying film guides for about 25 years and this is my favorite. I obviously share similar tastes to the reviewers, because if they give a movie 4 stars I usually find it entertaining. It also doesn't have the insufferable adolescent snobbery that you often get with some guides e.g., Time Out.

Great book for best Popular, Indie/Art and Foreign films !.......2004-12-19

The TLA Guide is a fantastic reference for the cream of the crop in films of all genres. As the title states, it is discerning by cutting out what they consider to be films that are low quality or just plain bad. Of course its debatable what films should or shouldn't be included according to taste (If you are looking for H.O.T.S., A Nymphoid Barbarian In Dinosaur Hell or Beaks:The Movie, you should look elsewhere). In the introduction of the book it says..."It's not our goal to include every film ever made, but to bring attention to films that we feel have achieved artistic success, amassed some popularity, or made an impact-past or present-on the art form". I think they do a pretty good job of their intentions. This book is a "best of film" type of guide in that I can browse through the books film listings and almost all the titles listed have cinematic value. They do rate popular, big budget and B-movies that are duds(rated at one or two stars),but only the more "important" ones so you don't have to sort through pages and pages of mediocrity. The book is well organized, clear & direct in the reviews(also they don't give everything away in the plot)and they have the best Index Listing of Foreign Films according to country of origin(better than Videohound and Time Out's list is confusing). More than 10,000 films are reviewed. I don't think they are in competition with the "list everything" type of guides such as Videohound but if you are a movie lover I would also buy another guide as a supplement like the Martin & Porter Guide or Videohound. The TLA Guide is a great choice. Highly recommended!

Fabulous Poolside or on the Train.......2000-06-21

I am a crossword addict, but after a tough day at work, I don't have the energy for the Sunday- level NYT Crossword. So when I just want to unwind I get out this book and do one of the puzzles. It refreshes my memory for clues that help me do harder puzzles when I am not fatigued, and still lets me get my crossword fix. The same quality as the other puzzles... just puzzles for the frazzles!

Often on facing Tuesday to Saturday's puzzles I can do nothing but look up references or directly cheat. As a crossword fan, but not a English mother-tonguer, this collections of NYT's Monday crosswords are my best-loved crossword book.----They are just on my solving skill level. This book is for eveyone who with few solving experience but eagerly want to enjoy high-standard puzzles.

The New York Times Easiest Crossword Puzzles Volume 1.......2000-04-10

As a person who loves to do crosswords but not very good at doing them this book fills the bill. I find actually being able to complete the puzzles, or most of a puzzle, is very satisfying. The puzzles are not too easy but also not too difficult that they become frustrating. Random House also has a PuzzleMeter on the back cover that lets the reader pick the difficulty and style of the puzzle book. I would highly recommend this new addition to the collection of puzzles from the New York Times.

top-notch postcard box.......2007-04-24

This set of postcards is excellent. The pictures are all great and well-varied, and all of them have excellent image quality. I was somewhat afraid that the images would be grainy from being taken from old film, but this wasn't really the case. Some of the pictures also have captions taken from the show, and they're generally quite funny. Humor and kitsch really make the primary theme of this set of postcards.

The backs of the postcards also have a good design with a gray outline of the enterprise set on a grid of gray lines (which also help to keep your writing straight). I don't know why, but the "Search Inside" feature doesn't show this. It shows the back of a rectangular card, but it's blank--not the same as what is actually on the backs of the cards in the box. Overall, this is easily one of the best postcard boxes I've seen in a long time.

Trek Nut.......2006-11-05

I have a friend thats as much a Star Trek fan as I am, and oddly enough, isn't very computer savy. She writes letters! Real 'stick a stamp on an envelop and put it in the snail mail' type letters! She's been wanting some Trek stationary and we have a hard time finding that... especially these days. Well, when I spotted the Trek Postcards, I snatched up a box for her. She was thrilled! I even got a thank you letter from her.. on the Trek Postcard. I couldn't have found a better birthday gift for her. Thank you for making them available.

This Collection of 22 postcards features all the women from "Star Trek: Voyager." It's the perfect Christmas gift for those who enjoy the female characters from this series. Unfortunately, not all of the women have the same number of cards. It would have been nicer to have more postcards with all of the women together. Furthermore, it's a waste of paper to have one postcard devoted to Seven of Nine as a complete Borg Drone.

Just wanted to clear up the fact that this "novel" is POSTCARDS ONLY in case you're interested. There is a review in here that makes it sound like this is a great novel! Obviously they have never physically seen "A Place Among the Stars" before! But if it's pics you want, its what you'll get. I only really enjoyed 4 or 5 of them. I thought the selection was boring and unimaginative. More action shots is what was needed. The last pic, showing Janeway pointing her phaser, is nice. So is the one of the 3 girls (excluding 7). They are looking at/posing for the camera and it has a very nice "off the set" feel. There is also a good one of Jennifer Lien alone. Other than that they are simply...pics. I found the same boring selection in the ST Voyager calendar. Oh well, it's still Voyager! You KNOW you love it!

It's a postcard book. All pictures........1999-04-03

All pictures of Janeway, Torres, Seven of Nine and a few of Kes, plus a few group shot. Photo quality is generally good; some are poster-quality clarity, others are just pics from the show, but they're all nice shots. Printed on good quality stock. I'll mail off the Sevens first and save the Janeways for special occassions.

Nice shots of a select pair of Voyager regulars........1999-03-31

The shots provided are good, but it is extremely short on B'Elanna and Kes, and extensive on 7-of-9 and especially the Captain. Anyone particularly interested in these two, you have a winner. As a female fan of Star Trek who always hoped to see stronger female characters, it's a positive thing to me to see some of the Voyager women showing their stuff, though.
