Delphus E. Carpenter (1877-1951) was Colorado's commissioner of interstate streams during a time when water rights were a legal battleground for western states. A complex, unassuming man as rare and cunning in politics and law as the elusive silver fox of the Rocky Mountain West, Carpenter boldly relied on negotiation instead of endless litigation to forge agreements among states first, before federal intervention. In "Silver Fox of the Rockies," Daniel Tyler tells Carpenter's story and that of the great interstate water compacts he helped create. Those compacts, produced in the early twentieth century, have guided not only agricultural use but urban growth and development throughout much of the American West to this day.

In Carpenter's time, most western states relied on the doctrine of prior appropriation--first in time, first in right--which granted exclusive use of resources to those who claimed them first, regardless of common needs. Carpenter feared that population growth and rapid agricultural development in states sharing the same river basins would rob Colorado of its right to a fair share of water. To avoid that eventuality, Carpenter invoked the compact clause of the U.S. Constitution, a clause previously used to settle boundary disputes, and applied it to interstate water rights. The result was a mechanism by which complex issues involving interstate water rights could be settled through negotiation without litigating them before the U.S. Supreme Court. Carpenter believed in the preservation of states rights in order to preserve the constitutionally mandated balance between state and federal authority.

Grand Father of Southwestern Literature.......2007-08-14

"Colorado" is a superb early work of non-fiction by Frank Waters. It is among over 20 of his books still in print.
It is written in an epic style and may be the best piece written about the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. Certainly it is required reading for anyone interested in those subjects. Frank Waters novels such as "Man Who Killed the Deer" and "People of the Valley" are classics of Southwestern Literature causing many to name Frank Waters the Grand Father of Southwestern Literature. Since his death, the Frank Waters Foundation in Taos, New Mexico works to promote Waters work and ideas.

Part of the great forgotten "Rivers of America" series.......2005-08-31

This is one of the best entries in the wonderful Writer's Project series that arose from the WPA era....many of the books are still available in libraries...this is wonderfully engaging writing, the kind that makes you feel you have had a great conversation with the writer, I found that I had mentally retained much of the information long afterwards, as a result...I found the most interesting part of this book to be the description of the old Colorado River steamers; not many are now aware that the river once coursed as far South as old Mexicali; there is a wonderful description of the great tidal bore of the old river which of course was obliterated by damming...a wonderful companion to Waters' novel, "The Yogi of Cockroach Court," which takes place in Mexicali. Highly recommended.

A Great History of the Colorado River.......2005-02-05

Frank Waters covers all aspects of the history of the Colorado and puts the river as just a part of the entire drainage. It's really a history of the "triangle" of the Rockies that stretches from Montana, Wyoming and Idaho, to the Front Range of the Colorado and over to Utah. The apex is the mouth of the river at the head of the Gulf of California.
Outside of the geologic prominence of the entire region, which he addresses at the begining and then at the end when he talks about the Grand Canyon, he goes into the Indian civilizations, the Spanish settlements, the American trappers and gold miners and on to the Mormons and more recent history. He does a great job describing the development of the Imperial Valley in California, not only for its importance as a use of the Colorado river water, but also because of his familiarity having been a telephone repairman in the 1920s out there.
The descriptions of and respect for the Indians showed where his heart really laid. The stories of the white man, be them Spanish or American, was to describe the man over land mentality.

This is a book written 50 years ago and updated a bit in the 80s, but it gives a history in vignettes of what occurred on the Colorado Plateau over the last, say 1,000 years.

Good book. Thanks, Ross, for giving it to me for Christmas, 2004.

My mom got me the 2003 Get Fuzzy scratch-a-day because Bucky reminded her of my cat. Indeed, the personalities of Bucky and Satchel (the dog) are incredibly accurate. If you have pets or are a pet lover, you can't help but love this strip.

It features Rob, a bachelor, with his two pets - Bucky (the cat) and Satchel (the dog). Bucky is cynical, sarcastic, and can often be found staring at the wall. He gets in endless trouble, which he frequently drags poor Satchel into. Satchel isn't the brightest crayon in the box.

The comic strips are very witty, and it is definitely hard to throw one away every day. A great gift for anybody who likes comics or animals.

One of the Best Strips Out There.......2003-09-10

It seems that daily comic strip readers either love "Get Fuzzy" or hate it. There doesn't appear to be any middle ground. I'm in the group that loves this little gem of a comic strip. It is one of the most witty, refreshing, and downright funny stips to come along in quite some time. Plus I think it helps having a cat or dog, as Conley is dead on with the personalities of Satchel and Bucky. I see a little of the personalities of the dogs and cats that have been in my life in each of these strips.

I have the 2003 calendar and plan on getting this 2004 version, as I need my daily quota of "Get Fuzzy"! If you're limited on space and you spend your day in a "veal cube" like I do, this would be the perfect addition to bring a little laughter to an otherwise mundane day. Enjoy!

The book covers everything from the basics of setting up a scene with lighting to writing your own shaders with detailed descriptions of the Renderman API. Overall, excellent overview for the intermediate graphics prefessional.

Intended for shader programmers.......2004-06-06

Don't buy this book expecting to learn the intricacies of Renderman. This is really geared towards shader programmers and Renderman theorists. Don't get me wrong, it's a good book, it just wasn't what I was looking for.

If you don't care about the above, but would still like to see how Toy Story and the Iron Giant were created, then buy this.

Delivers more than the title suggests.......2002-12-22

The world of computer graphics books is filled with fat, pricy tomes that are frankly little better than rehashes of the manual. "Advanced Renderman" is a completely different sort of book.

While Renderman is the ostensible subject, the authors actually cover the entire graphics workflow-- and explain the "why" of it all. Their section on anti-aliasing, for example, is concise, complete, and makes clear the implications of all those little doo-hickeys in 3DS -- you remember the AR explanation better, because its based around how rendering works, rather than how a particular application works (which may change in the next rev, anyway)

Smart guys, smart book-- highly recommended.

Great all-around RenderMan reference.......2001-01-20

This is a great book, written in clear and understandable English. It proivded me (a novice) great information about the RenderMan interface. Not only did it provide a reference to the various API calls, but it also includes an introduction to the basic maths behind it, as well as chapters that discuss CG in general. A thoroughly well written, useful and informative book. It is indespensible for any RenderMan user and in fact, for any CG artist.

Well-Written, Wonderful Book!.......2003-04-20

Britney and Lynne Spears have done a wonderful job writing Britney's life story. The book chronicles Britney's entire life from her birth to after the release of "Oops, I Did It Again". The book shows that Britney wasn't always rich, in fact her family did go through some financial problems. Britney and Lynne also write about how from an early age Britney showed her talent for singing and dancing. I specifically enjoyed reading about Britney's childhood, there is a lot of information about young Britney that I loved reading about. It was also interesting to learn about how Britney got her record deal, and how nervous she and her mom were before her audition- the same one that ended up giving Britney a record deal! Britney and Lynne talk about mother-and-daughter issues, such as clothes, serious issues (such as sex and drugs), how to help each other over come obstacles, amd more. This was an awesome book, perfect for any Britney Spears fan. There were also tons of cool pictures, of Britney from when she was a baby, as a child, a teen, and all the way up to the year 2000. However, I feel as though Britney and Lynne should write another updated edition of the book soon, as it has been a while!

Top 3 poker book.......2007-01-12

Of all the poker authorities out there, I'll put Phil Gordon in the top three, along with Brunson & Sklansky. Without being arrogant or aloof, he explains the history and techniques of the game. He explains the odds and math in very simple terms that anyone can understand and benifit from. Phil walks you through the stages of learning the game. You learn how to play on line and setting up your own home game. He then walks you through moving from low to middle limit games. "The Real Deal" will definitely step your game up a few levels. This is a great addition to anyone's poker library.

For the beginner.......2006-12-30

This page a day calendar was useful but a little light on poker strategy. It won't be something I'd suggest buying for it's information but as a page a day calendar it was fun and sometimes informative. I'd suggest a Phil Gordon page a day calendar to anyone interested in poker.

No book can teach you everything about Poker, but this is a great start........2006-11-08

Being a novice at poker, I bought this book expecting to find some very basic, not too complicated strategies on how to win at poker. Instead, I found a book that introduces some of the mathematical complexities of the game and in doing so, forced me to think more about the science of poker rather than the luck of poker. I have read this book many times and each time I learn more. I believe this book is excellent in that you have to read it more than once to understand it.

Phil also sent me an autographed photo, personalized. I am impressed, he is the ambassador to poker that poker needs.

This is the first poker book I have read and have improved my game in no-limit. This book offers history on the game, hand ranking and how to calculate the different odds that you need to understand in order to win playing hold'em. This is a good book to read and to keep around as a reference book. Good luck.

The perfect guide.......2000-04-14

This is the only blackjack book needed. J. Phillip Vogel covers everything needed in order to beat the casino. He includes basic strategies, easy to read charts and even card counting. No gambler should play without reading this first.

A sound blackjack method........2000-01-07

I enjoy reading about gambling almost as much as I like playing it, and I have found Vogel's work to be an excellent source for any player, especially a novice. His basic strategy methods are right on the money when you compare them to every recognized strategy, any he even includes a basic section on card-counting which is important for beginner players. Some of his discussions on trends and probability will probably confuse some players who are less-than-mensa material, but he tries somewhat successfully to make them read easy.

The basic breakdown of the book is a separation into what he terms "The Successful Six" which is generally a breakdown of the six most important weapons in a gambler's arsenal: proper bankroll, knowledge of the game, self-control, strategy, understanding probability, and patience. All of this information is highly useful, and it is presented in a thorough, enjoyable manner.

As a semi-professional gambler myself, I would recommend this book to any gambler, and call it essential reading to any novice.

THE ONLY BLACKJACK BOOK YOU'LL EVER NEED.......1999-05-09

Blackjack:The Real Deal was by far the most informative and logical black jack book I have purchased. I've been going to Atlantic City for some time now, and I have never won so often in my life. I've read many other books on this game and this was the only book that was written in a way that I found easy to understand, and, beyond a shadow of a doubt, WORKS!! J. Phillip Vogel goes into such topics as casino etiquette, betting stratogies, and easy to read charts telling you when to take a card, split your cards, and so on. Since I have read this book, my winnings have increased by at least 45%. My recommendation would be to defanitely buy this book, read it, and be ready to "WIN"!!!

The review by Booklist--a very respected source of book reviews--caused me to buy and read Blackjack: the Real Deal. Relatively new at the game and wanting to improve my chances to win, I was impressed by the information in this book. Now I'm on my way to Vegas and to try out my new skills. I recommend this very logical and readable book to anyone interested in improving their game !

Blackjack: The Real Deal is right on the money! Its basic strategy section increased my understanding of the game and brought my winnings up an average of 30%. J. Phillip Vogel's style is easy to read, straight forward, logical and based on statistical facts, not luck or superstition. (Mathematics don't lie.) What's more, he covers casino etiquette, money management and other handy tips. I think quite a few gamblers could use this book, whether or not THEY think so. I see he is also coming out with a craps book that, personally, I can't wait to read!

gives and overview of the rules of the games in excrutiating detail. Nothing to do with strategy. The book is a waste of time for anyone who knows the basics of poker. Only one small reference to actual gaming odds of various poker hands. SUMMARY: If you have a pair of tens or better in Let it Ride you should stay. If you get a pair or ace-king in certian situations in Caribbean Stud you should stay.

This is a must read. It is very informative and useful for novices and expert alike. It includes easy to read charts and strategies that actually work.

Beyond a doubt, this is the best book available on these two games. It is tightly written, packed with info on everthing from odds and vigorish to playing strategy and winning methods. I've read a few other books on these games before, and I've been playing them for a few years now, but this book has more info than any I've read, and the strategies are the best I've seen. I've already won more money than I ever have before! Thank you Mr. Vogel!

If you think you know everything that there is to know about Caribbean Stud or Let it Ride, then guess again. It always seemed like such an easy game, but I continued to lose anyway. Now I not only know what I was doing wrong, but I know what hands I have to play, when to fold, and exactly when to let my bets ride. I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone, even if you think you know how to play! He examines the rules, proper strategies, odds and probabilities, betting techniques, and everthing else you need to know.

If you are serious about finally winning at these games, BUY THIS BOOK!

Omissions and errors decrease the value of this book.......2000-05-27

This book is badly edited, sloppily written, and unreliable. Major characters from The Original Series and the movies (Saavik, for instance) are left out while even the most minor character from The Next Generation receives full coverage. It's also too dated to be of much use to the Deep Space Nine or Voyager fan.

I don't recommend this book.
