I was so thrilled to discover these posters. Bought them and showed them to my eldest daughter last year before her baby shower. We framed 9 of them for her daughter's nursery and they are wonderful. Perfect subjects and colors to add that special touch to a nursery. These will be saved for future generations to use. We just love them. Can't say enough good things about them. Love this style.

This is a truly stunning collection of images. Great for a new baby gift, perfect for framing. The quality of the prints is excellent, and the pictures are sweet without being sappy. They work for decorating a baby's room for boy or girl (or both---I gave them as a gift for a boy/girl set of twins).

Love this book of posters!! We are decorating our nursery in a nursery rhyme theme. I chose this book because of its vintage style. I was impressed when I received it. The poster pages are very thick and sturdy, similar to a very thick wall paper. We plan to frame them without glass, because they are textured as if they are already on canvas.

Not a lot of detailed information.......2005-11-08

I didn't find this book to be very useful at all. It was basically a short review of general dog care focussed on city living. However all the information was very breif and didn't go into very much detail. if you really want to learn more about your dog I suggest getting a book that is more focussed on just one subject. I highly suggest the book "Rover, Don't Roll Over" for positive training. This book might serve someone well as a general reference, but if you have any troubles or questions that need answering or even trouble shooting don't bother with this book. I aslo didn't like their training style, it wasn't harmful, I just don't think their particular techniques work as well as in Rover, Dont Roll Over.

It may just make you want to grab your dog and move to the big city! Useful for ALL dog owners and a NECESSITY for urban dog owners. Great photographs. Accessible to the average dog owner but with interesting, unique information for seasoned dog-lovers.

I am a HUGE MetroDog fan. There's advice in there that I've NEVER seen anywhere else, and I have 2+ shelves worth of dog books in my house. Nowhere else discusses how to secure your dog safely while you grab a cup of coffee, or how to hail a cab with your dog, for example. One of the most *practical* books - and not just for city dwellers. Suburbanites without fenced yards or even just full-time workers will find much useful info.

Kilcommons and Wilson have done it again........2003-08-06

I thought I would like this book, and I did. I've read all of the authors' other books about dogs, and this one was right up to par. There was no resting on laurels!

Metrodog is invaluable for dog-owning city dwellers, but it's equally useful for dog owners in any location. The book begins with how to find the right dog, and ends with how to say good-bye to a faithful old friend. In between it covers housebreaking, food, manners, training, socialization, exercise, and health care, with hundreds of useful details discussed with the authors' customary savvy and humor.

For readers who are interested in learning how to successfully and happily share their lives with a dog, this is the book to read.

Few people writing about dogs today have as much hands-on experience as this team. This is the book that I recommend to those who adopt dogs from me. I know that the advice that new dog owners will glean from this book will be level-headed, responsible, practical and kind.

Metrodog covers issues that real dog owners face. How can I get my dog to behave well enough to take him on my day to day errands? How should I handle encounters with those who are mentally ill? How should I exercise my dog? The skills listed herein are practical and easy to teach.

...this book is an excellent source for any dog owner. With their usual entertaining writing style, Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson guide one through choosing a dog, housebreaking and training it. Their experience in dog training is extensive and it shows throughout the advice and tips in the book. We live in the suburbs, but have found this book tremendously helpful as we work our German Shepherd puppy towards being a therapy dog! ...

An Interesting, Well-Written Overview.......2001-01-08

This book is enjoyable to read. A person who knows nothing about contemporary classical music can read this book and know about the lives and the music of all of classical music's most important composers. It tells about the distinguishing features of the composer's musical work in general and goes in to more depth on several of modern music's most important compositions. I highly recommend this book.

Good text on American Pop Music.......2004-12-05

I find this textbook to be very good, especially compared to those in its field.

Starting with a brief introduction, the textbook covers the basics of musical sound (beat, timbre, dynamics) and then touches on the elements and sources of popular music. The book then begins historically with minstrel songs ("Oh Susanna" and the like), Ragtime, the Blues, Jazz, Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, Latin Music, and finally Rock and Jazz Fusion (with a little bit of disco and punk).

What's great about this textbook is that even it is accessible for undergraduate college students and even high schoolers, the material is presented in a scholarly fashion. I've not always found that to be the case when it comes to writings about rock music. You can find a lot of fluff out there.

The textbook also has a companion 5-CD set purchased separately. I feel it is extremely helpful, and the book refers to the recordings ALL THE TIME. It's really necessary. There are some songs referred to where Campbell was unable to get the copyright permission, but he has a Discography list at the back of the book for those interested.

This book gets four stars mainly because it's so light on rock after the sixties. The eighties has very little material, and there is only one hip-hop example (Public Enemy). The book really needs a new edition.

Don't use this book for a course on rock alone, but it works great as a text on popular music.

I've met Dr. Campbell.......2003-02-02

and took his class. I'm pretty sure he even knows me by name. I bought the book, but never read it. I've yet to return the book, so someday in the future, i may read it. But if that book is one tenth as good as his lectures and computer notes were, then i give it my full endoresement.

Fun, entertaining, and informative........1999-09-27

I am a college instructor and have decided to use this book in my History of Popular Music class. I found this book to be very thorough and concise and stays focused on relevant material. I also appreciate the use of historical context when describing a period of music. This book is fun, entertaining, and very informative as it relays the development of our pop music. A must read for music lovers--even if you are not in school!

Excellent coverage of the evolution of music in America.......1999-09-03

The Beat Goes On provides an excellent view of how we got from "Oh, Susanna" to "My Sharonna".The only problems are caused by trying to cover so much material in one book. Anyone who wants to learn why what we listen to sounds they way it does should get this book. Hihgly recommended.

Informative yet a great read........2003-02-13

David Kastin is currently my teacher at Stuyvesant Highschool. I have nothing but praise for his book and his teaching abilities. The book is great, earning all 5 stars. It sheds interesting facts while always staying on point. A great read for anyone who is interested in American music.

Killer Su Doku is based on the original Su Doku grid, with the same rules and numbers—1 to 9—but with an added deadly twist. This time there is an element of arithmetic involved and there are few, if any, clues. The aim is to not only complete every row, column, and cube so that it contains the digits 1 to 9, but to also fill in the outlined cubes so they add up to the same number.

Hints to solve the puzzle are hidden in the joined squares where only one combination of numbers applies. In the case of joined squares, if the printed number is 3, it should be 1 and 2 that go into the squares. Likewise, in the case of three joined squares, if the printed number is 6, the only combination possible is 1, 2, and 3.

To add one final fiendish level, each puzzle also has a time worked out by its Japanese creators so you can try to beat the clock.

Solid and fun.......2007-09-14

I ran into Killer Sudoku accidentally, and became hooked ever since. The (simple addition and subtraction) math involved adds a new dimension to the puzzle. Unlike the standard Sudoku, Killer Sudoku puzzles have more twists and surprises waiting to be explored. The more difficult puzzles in this book are very satisfactory in harboring many pleasant and exciting ones.

The books contain 110 puzzles of 5 levels. When you advance to the last two level, your skill and fun are elevated as well. I guess after you mastered the game, you may want to get books with only difficult ones (and they should be so published). One nice thing about this book is that the puzzles seem to have been tested, and there is a 'par' time for each one of them. For easy one the pars are ten to 20 minutes, and the hardest ones up to 90 minutes. These par times are pretty good in that I tended to exceed them in the beginning, but after I have advanced to high levels and came back to do some easier ones that I skipped I often beat the par. The time competition factor also is a way to enjoy the easy ones.

Highly recommended for going through the levels and mastering the game. If you are looking only for tough Killer Sudoku books, this one contains about 20 very good ones.

A must for the Sudoku bored.......2007-06-26

If your bored of Sudoku and not finding the standard puzzles challenging you need to try these out. The page layout of this book is good there is ample room to write your number combinations and there are suggested times for each puzzle. The paper used in the book is softer but stands up fine to an eraser.

Plenty of fun.......2007-05-29

I do enjoy regular Sudoku. But there are a couple of problems with it. First, while it uses numbers, it in no way uses the properties of numbers. Second, the level of effort to solve such puzzles is generally uneven; you may get a few numbers early, but then it gets very tough, and soon after that it is easy again. When it is tough, you may have to write down possible values in a square or guess, and that's unsatisfying compared to being able to simply write down correct numbers in blank squares.

With Killer Sudoku, one does get to use the additive properties of numbers, so there really is a difference between the symbols! And the level of effort is more nearly even. In addition, even hard puzzles generally can be solved without writing anything down but the answers. It is my favorite Sudoku variant ("Greater than Killer Sudoku" is my second favorite).

This book is about at the right level. Do not be scared by the "deadly" puzzles at the end, as I found them to be easier than some of the earlier ones.

I recommend this book to all those who enjoy a challenge and have some time on their hands.

Lots of Fun.......2007-01-19

In my opinion, Killer Sudoku puzzles are much more fun and satisfying to solve than regular Sudoku puzzles because of the added complexity of the sums and the various techniques that can be employed to solve them. "Killer Su Doku 1: The Deadly New Dimension" contains 110 puzzles of which there are 17 Gentle, 30 Moderate, 42 Tricky, 16 Tough, and 5 Deadly puzzles. Each puzzle has a suggested time to beat. There is also a two-page "Guidelines for Solving Killer Su Doku".

I didn't find the guidelines for solving to be particularly useful. They give a quite minimal explanation of how to solve these types of puzzles and leave out explanations of some of the more important techniques for solving, such as the 45 Rule. (Steve Arons book, "The Official Book of Killer Sudoku" contains a much more comprehensive introduction.)

Regarding the suggested times, I didn't specifically time myself, but I often noticed that I took much less or much more time than what was suggested. As for difficulty, I found that sometimes a puzzle in a given section was either much harder or much easier than what was implied. The puzzles in the Deadly section were no more difficult than the ones in the Tough section. The hardest puzzles in the book are 78, 98, and 105. I eventually figured out some interesting equations and relational techniques for solving 78 and 98. (Whew, that was fun!) Puzzle 105 is the only one that I have not yet managed to solve.

This brings me to a recommendation for the Solutions section. In general, I find the solutions in the backs of Sudoku books to be useless. If I finish a puzzle and it conforms to the rules then it's correct; otherwise it's wrong. I don't need a solution to tell me that. The only time I look at the solution is occasionally when I'm doing a really difficult puzzle and I want to check an intermediate result to make sure I'm on the right track so I don't end up having to erase the entire puzzle and start over. This also helps to instantly understand what type of mistake I made. Something that would be really helpful in the solutions for the really difficult puzzles would be to show a partially solved grid and an explanation of how to get to the next step.

On the whole I found this book to be very enjoyable and highly recommend it for any Killer Sudoku fan. Publisher, another one please!

Good puzzles, but easier then indicated.......2007-01-04

I enjoyed working the puzzles in this book, but I found them substantially easier then the author did. The estimated times for the puzzles were way longer then I found them to take. Also, in the first part of the book, many of the puzzles included some starting numbers, instead of what I would consider a "pure" killer sudoku, where you start with only cages and sums. Nonetheless, still a fun diversion.
