Michael Parkes is an American painter and sculptor with an international following. A trip to India in the 1960s involved a study into the myths and mysticism that would later become recurring themes in his art. Michael's paintings are realistic in their presentation, but his themes are often magical and other-worldly. Michael uses the term "magical realism" to describe his work.

    Book Description

Whether attending to a painting, a moment of love, or a hawk hunting over marshland, Eamon Grennan, in the words of the poet and critic Cal Bedient, "presents the commonplace in so luminous a spirit that it spreads meaning, by analogy, into our own lives." In this bold collection, Grennan widens his poetic gaze on the natural world and brings sharp focus to moments of intimacy, capturing in fresh verse the age-old connections between lovers.

5 out of 5 stars "an oxygen-ripple in the bloodstorm, reddening it".......2005-03-13

In Eamon Grennan's Still Life with Waterfall, agitated swoops and scuttlings of animal life are stilled in a language as sensuous as the bright colors of Bonnard's "Sunset" (on the book's cover). Grennan's observations of the natural world are inextricably bound to the ineluctable experiences of death and loss, resulting in a poetry that gnaws its way toward basic realizations about what it means to be a human animal. On a primal level, we identify with the rage for survival in the plights of the carnivorous marsh hawk and sparrowhawk (in the book's first and last poems respectively), as well as the pathos of the "stopped robin" in "Detail," and the flight instinct of the deer in "Grid," who "stares till he sees what you are, then... he's dolphining green waves/ to a safer distance." Grennan also contemplates animal instinct in search of a model for more complex human behaviors. For example, "Up Against It" is a poem that functions on both a literal and metaphorical level, in which frustrated bees who "cannot understand the window... fling their bodies against... [the] fact of glass--and can only go on/ making the sound that tethers their electric/ fury to what's impossible."

So many of these poems speak to the way in which fundamental human impulses are felt and remembered not only by the brain, but by the body. Weather fluctuations are experienced both internally and externally. "To Grasp the Nettle" treats the speaker's hands almost as the subject of the poem, endowing them with their own memory of lost love, "the way they burned/ to find the cool indented shell of flesh/ at the base of her spine, how they cupped themselves/ to hold her head, feeling its weight and bones." In keeping with his deeply sensual consciousness, Grennan's long sentences, rich with assonance and consonance, give his poetry a slow, lulling, lyrical quality, so that language is eroticized no less passionately than the human body.

A palpable sense of loss haunts the text; rather than write around it as some poets might, Grennan writes through and about the pain of loss, even adopting a lexicon in which words like "asunder," "amputation," and "silence," recur throughout the poems. In addition, there is a formal recurrence of 13-line sonnets, each a kind of truncation, coming up short in the same way life and so many of its elements end prematurely. In the throes of such emptiness where speech fails to compensate for abandonment, and "there is this void, a space filled with mourning/ in silence," Grennan persists with courage and eloquence to contemplate the "'Soul,' [as] something like... a space/ that has shaped itself to the shape of what's gone/ and not returning."

5 out of 5 stars The subtle sound of grief.......2005-03-07

Eamon Grennanfs gStill Life With Waterfallh is a gallery of lush musics. Themes of grief, wounding & healing, and multiedged memory haunt many works, but many more are chiefly concerned with astonishment in the lights and lives of the world. And we are viscerally in the world on every page, never heaving confusedly through the endless tarpit of language. Rural and wild scenes tend to dominate Grennanfs landscape, but these descriptively masterful poems never lapse into the merely painterly, are instead animate with an emotive intensity formed of equal parts sensing, thinking and feeling. He is a consistently formal poet, but the crackle of thought and image in his work leads one through fluidly, so that the formal properties only grow obvious after something electric has been transmitted.

Some poems aim at a verbal rendition of experience, the words themselves, as sonic bodies, more prominent than image, metaphor, or philosophy (gCold Morningh, gGifth, gIn the Dunesh): gNothing to be seen or heard, the sea / not making the slightest ripple, vacant acres of glass / paving a way to islands that are light blue chimera / adrift on rafts of white mist. . . .h Others employ Grennanfs superbly tuned ear to find a way into and through the no-manfs-land of grief (gWhy?h, gMan Making the Bedh, gAshh): gLying alone. . .he will dream / a wilderness of tents in moonlight: asleep, / they will be shivering a little, as if they felt the stars / press their chill rivets in, or the future / with red eyes whispering to rouse them.h

Particularly interesting are Grennanfs thirteen-line poems, some of the most effective and powerful in the book, by dint of the linguistic compression that is one of his strongest gifts, and of a sustained examination of one or two resonant images (gPulseh, gWindowgraveh, gEnoughh): ghaving seen his real presence / ignite like that\the beautiful slow burn of it / as he steps from my sight into his own tangle of shadows\ / and not having to content myself with the marks only / of his absence: the smell of him, his neat prints filling with sand.h There is a wonderful movement from the intensity of description in the first poem (gAt Workh) to the consciousness of larger relations in the last (gDetailsh), as though Grennan were teaching us, through attention, how to let the least event in the outer world foster inner meaning.

The description of sighting a fox in gEnoughh describes well the overall project of the book: to fill with sensual connections the absences and nothings that come to pervade a life. Violence and death are always inherent to this process, but never unbeautiful: gsilk-spurt of bloodh, gThe sheep skeleton in the stream / resembles the inside of a small harpsichord.h To paint over yin with the brightness of yang is to set foot on sentimentalityfs slippery, and psychically terminal, slope. There are times when Grennan approaches this precipice, but in the end insists that he means to sing it all, for gThereness / is all: that burn of chance, quickened breath of appetite / adding up to all that this world offers\ / glitter and shadow, pang of absence, the way / this day keeps coming on: we meet; we disappear.h

5 out of 5 stars A memorable kind of literary music.......2002-12-06

Eamon Grennan is one of those academicians (he is currently a Professor of English at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie and the winner of the 2002 Heimbold Professor of Irish Studies at Villanova University) who is particularly gifted with an ability to spin and weave a poetry that is at once elegant, romantic, original, and linguistically subtle -- a memorable kind of literary music. Still Life With Waterfall is a welcome and recommended compendium of Grennan's unique and adroitly written verse. Windowgrave: The dead bee lies on the window-ledge, a relic,/its amber-yellow body barred in black and it head//tucked in, dust gathering on every follicle/and on the geodesic dome of the head--all rucked in//and tucked away, so near is death. And the many/flies too, all sizes, lying on their sides as if//asleep, just a quick nap and they'll be up and off/about their business. Souls, we used to say://bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, all sorts of flies,/the air crowded and loud with left over angels--/but not the spider in its complex web, fallen/from grace but walking on air, vigilant in ways//that harden the heart, getting its appetite back.

        Book Description

Here, in words and images, writer and photographer Will Landon of Bellevue, Washington, paints a portrait of Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state. In sweeping panoramas of up to 360 degrees, counterpointed by close-ups and highlighted ultra-wide panoramas of intimate scenes, Landon explores the diversity of a remarkable mountain and its environs. This is Rainier Panorama, photographed over a period of twenty-four years, from 1972 to 1995. A photographer already adept at handling the wide variety of cameras needed to cover the diversity pictured in his first book, Glacier Panorama, Landon gave greater emphasis to the unique perspective of the ultra-wide angle panoramic in this book. Accompanying Landon's photographs are written impressions from his Rainier journals. Rainier Panorama is an extraordinary book, destined to join Glacier Panorama as a classic of its kind.

5 out of 5 stars the best rainier book around.......2000-12-20

I hiked the 100 mile Wonderland Trail that encircles Mount Rainier a few years ago. The hike changed my life and gave me the quest to collect photos and memorabilia that matched the diverse and unique experience of the mountain. Until I discovered this book, what I typically found were the garden-variety roadside photos available in most coffee table books, postcards, or placemats. What Landon's book gave me was a perfect mirror of my experience. I was able to rediscover the wonders of the mountain at any scale; from glaciated peaks to the delicate flora. The photos are beautiful, and the sequence of photos nearly match the clockwise circle I made around Mount Rainier. Included in the collection are photos of places only someone deeply familiar with the mountain could create, and makes me all the more appreciative of Landon's work and Mount Rainier itself.

        5 out of 5 stars Astounding Photography.......2000-11-01

This book is worth every cent paid for the collection of outstanding photos of Mt. Rainier. I'm planning on climbing this mountain for my fiftieth birthday next year and was surprised to find so few books on this topic here in New York City. Mr. Landon has indeed inspired me to train for the climb knowing I will be standing on the top of Rainier viewing the breathtaking scenes depicted in his stunning photos! See you at the top!

            Book Description

Go behind the curtain of one of the film world’s least understood art forms with the visual architect of 007

Who can forget the eloquence, sex appeal, and sheer luck of James Bond? The bombshells may vary, Bond might be played by Sean Connery or Roger Moore, but the style remains constant, an expectant suit of clothes simply waiting for the right actor to dive in and hoist his (shaken) martini in the air. Populated with international intrigue and riddled with gadgets, the world of Bond introduced a new kind of cinema, the look and feel of which was engineered by Ken Adam.
The mastermind behind seven of the first eleven Bond films, including Dr. No, Adam has been lauded as one of the world’s greatest production designers. First recognized during the filming of Around the World in Eighty Days, he has managed to cultivate a rapt following in one of the cinema’s most underappreciated professions, and with it a reputation for grandly expressionistic sets, such as the war room in Dr. Strangelove and Blofeld’s volcanic headquarters in You Only Live Twice. In this career-spanning series of interviews with Christopher Frayling, Adam shares the inspiration behind his work—from rebuilding eighteenth-century galleons to designing Bond’s moonbuggy—in the process revealing little-known anecdotes of a life begun in Weimar Berlin and nearly ended in World War II, only to piece itself back together and revolutionize the medium of film in its color-saturated golden age.

5 out of 5 stars Different perspective is good!!!!.......2006-02-07

The thing about biographies is that they are usually slanted toward just one aspect of the subject's life, intentionally or un-. Vaughan somehow melds some of the less obvious parts of The Maestro's life with his more well-known attributes. One caveat: Mr. Vaughan would have benefited from a better editor at Norton; there are little slips that a GOOD editor would have caught. THIS is the kind of biography a music-appreciator, not necessarily a musical professional, will love. I did.

5 out of 5 stars A good portrait of Herbert von Karajan from his later years.......2005-11-12

I read Roger Vaughan's HERBERT VON KARAJAN: A BIOGRAPHICAL PORTRAIT, in the summer of 1989, and liked it very much. Vaughan, who wrote a book on boating in the early 1980s which conductor Karajan (1908-1989) had read and admired, contacted Vaughan and asked him to write a his own (Karajan's) biography. Karajan once stated that he trusted Vaughan to write his biography because Vaughan was not a musician, and in the back-biting world of huge egos of musicians, Karajan would not trust a musician with this task!

Vaughan includes some tidbits of day to day life for Karajan in 1983-85, when the book was written. He mentions things like what Karajan would have for supper; personal thoughts on Goethe, the famous German writer; his relationship with the Berlin Philharmonic, the orchestra he conducted from 1955-1989; his thoughts on skiing, boating, flying small aircraft. He talks about Karajan's three marriages, 2 daughters (with his 3rd wife); performances of Wagner's THE FLYING DUTCHMAN at Salzburg; Karajan's rift with the Berlin Philharmonic over his insistence at hiring Sabine Meyer as principal clarinet (in violation of the orchestras "no women in our ranks" policy which stood until this time); Karajan's final recordings of the Beethoven Symphonies, and films made of Karajan concerts or studio recordings. Karajan believed all recordings in the future would be video + audio, a prediction which has so far not been fulfilled.

I enjoyed this book alot, as it gave me added insight into Herbert von Karajan as a man and musician. Even in his late 70s and declining health (vascular problems and great pain from a degenerating spine and difficulty walking) Karajan remained a dynamic conductor who told his orchestras what he expected, and usually got the results he wanted.

Tidbits: Karajan was a fan of the movie "E.T." and loved television as a form of entertainment, but did not listen to Classical music at home. His wife, Elliette (an ex Dior model) would listen to contemporary piano works at home when Karajan wasn't there, but he preferred quiet, and really loved his hobbies: skiing, swimming, boating, and flying planes.

Highly recommended, if you are interested in this conductor.

A new source of power for the Dungeons & Dragons® roleplaying game!
This supplement introduces a magical substance called incarnum into the D&D game. With this book, the players characters can meld incarnum—the power of souls living, dead, and unborn—into magical items and even their own bodies, granting them special attacks, defenses, and other abilities (much as magic items and spells do). Incarnum can be shaped and reshaped into new forms, giving characters tremendous versatility in the dungeon and on any battlefield.
This book also features new classes, prestige classes, feats, and other options for characters wishing to explore the secrets of incarnum, as well as rules and advice for including incarnum in a D&D campaign.

                4 out of 5 stars Pretty nice.......2007-04-16

I rather enjoy the idea here. I'm not quite sure how to use it since I've not gotten past the play testing and theorycraft end of things right now. but from what I've seen so far it feels abit like psionic and magics love child. I recommend the product for any advanced dmer who's fed up with the innate imbalance of spells per day. (I've got my own spell casting system that works.. ) I'm not sure where this falls in my systems scheme of things yet, I'm still testing it against the 'default' rules. Once I have a better of idea of how things fall in mine I will comment then about its balance.

but so far so good. the only thing I -don't- like here, is that it seems abit ripoff ish of the force. which is ok.. but does it all have to glow blue? *L*

5 out of 5 stars Interesting additions to magical combat.......2007-01-27

I found the Magic of Incarnum full of interesting alternatives to a purely magic based RPG. While I dont think incarnum should be a replacement for magic in any game, some of the feats, monsters, and prestige classes could give your character a little something extra next time you game.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better D&D game supplements presented this decade........2006-07-17

When it comes to supplement books to the Dungeon & Dragons game, players and Dungeon Masters alike must learn to pick and choose their battles. I say this because while many D&D books can prove to be quite viable in introducing new material into the game (e.g., new spells, character feats and options, monsters, and adventures), others can be a tad redundant and perhaps even useless to a given campaign. Luckily, Magic of Incarnum--released back in the September of 2005--is of the former eventually and not of the latter, as the idea it introduces into the core D&D game is one that neither TSR, Inc., nor Wizards of the Coast had ever tried before until this past year.

See, Incarnum is the soul energy that manifests itself within living beings. Anyone and everyone who either lives in the present, has ever lived in the past, and will soon be born in the future has a touch of this substance within them, although certain beings are more blessed by and intuitive about it than others are. The human-born azurin, for instance--one of the four races introduced in Magic of Incarnum--are especially aware of that which composes their very essence and utilize it in their careers as adventurers, aiming to either right the wrongs of the material world or subjugate the masses to their will to fulfill more malignant objectives. Similarly, there are the wild, gray-skinned dusklings, whose ties to incarnum blesses them with an innate knowledge about it and the knack for manipulating the energy of their spirits in an effort to mimic the powers of mystic beasts via the Totemist Character Class. The final two races presented in this manual--namely, the rilkans and the skarns--are offshoots of an ancient reptilian race called the mishtai that, when they existed, aimed at attaining "perfection of form" via a philosophy that espouses both physical and mental discipline and development as well as the use of incarnum. Unfortunately, the mishtai failed in this well-meaning yet lofty goal of theirs and eventually became extinct, hence spawning these two peoples and the bitterness they have toward one another as the result of the polar opposition of their general personalities (the nimble rilkans being friendly, outgoing, and daring and the skarns being studious, strictly disciplined, and somewhat scornful of those races they think are beneath them).

More important than the new races, however, are the three Character Classes this book introduces, all of which allow participants to utilize incarnum to aid them in their adventures within their home realm. The aforementioned Totemist, for instance, uses incarnum to forge different artifacts of magical power called Soul Melds that enable her to mimic the properties of the many magical beasts that populate the typical D&D world, from unicorns and blink dogs to manticores and chimera. The Soulborn, in contrast, uses his inner soul energy to bolster his martial prowess and smite those who oppose his moral philosophy, which can be noble or wicked in nature. Finally, the incarnate--the book's focal Character Class--is the very embodiment of law, chaos, good, or evil for her people and is the most adept of the three Classes in using incarnum to form Soul Melds that bolster her fighting skill, rend her foes asunder, or aid her and her fellow adventurers in various other ways. There are also plenty of Prestige Classes for PCs to attain once they reach higher levels, such as the noble Incandescent Champion, the arcane Soulcaster, the mage-hunting Witchborn Binder, and the sinister Necrocarnate. Throw in fifteen keen new monsters, numerous spells and psionic powers for magic- and psionics-wielding PCs (including the Incarnum domain for clerics), a full list of Soul Melds for incarnum-wielding characters, numerous additional feats for PCs and NPCs alike, and three campaign adventures centered around the presence of incarnum, and you've got one impressive book.

To summarize, while there exists the occasional Dungeons & Dragon supplement that just doesn't live up to its potential, there also exists that one manual that proves its worth within every page. Such is what Magic of Incarnum is in its success to provide D&D players with a new take on their favorite pencil-and-paper role-playing game. Indeed, it's the one book by Wizards of the Coast that gets one thinking in more ways than one, which is precisely what an RPG supplement is supposed to do. If you can find this manual, grab it. It's worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars For those who like variation and trickyness.......2006-04-06

This book is fantastic! Incarnum can be dropped into any setting easily with no changes. In fact, WoTC layed the groundwork for this system way back in Bastion of Souls. Basically, incarnum is "creation-energy". You draw upon the essence of the universe that is responsible for life - and the power of souls past. You don't draw power from others like a leech, you know how to use the stuff of the universe to create enhancements on yourself.

Incarnum is based around flexibility. Each day you get to decide upon your enhancments for the day, and moment to moment you decide how powerful any one enhancement is. This magic system ain't easy. Anyone expecting to pick a list of spells to throw will be disappointed. Anyone looking to use a techie class to help fill holes in a party with some fun variation will be rewarded.

For example, my party was going into a heavy combat zone, so my character built himself up to handle front line fighting. He had a xd6 electricity touch attack, and a xd6 fire based shield. Every time he scrapped with an opponent, the opponent took touch damage and then fire damage if they hit back. He cleared his way through a group of goblin worg riders while the cleric kept him standing. The next session was more exploratory so he wore a get up that removed all conceleament benefits so the party couldn't be surprised by shadow dwellers. The third session he took up the range attacker spot. He was doing 4d6 ranged touch attack damage with acidic spit, and a magically enhanced armor class.

Final example: I played the totemist with shark pounce and a blink dog shirt. He would pounce for massive damage, next round he would strike and blink away 10', and then next round pounce, repeat ad infinitum.

Incarnum requries knowing the rules well and manipulating the different abilities for max collaborative benefit. It can be tricky and functions differently than every other class in the game. It also has a learning curve as you explore and understand how it all really works together. An excellent way to add spice and variation to any campaign.

2 out of 5 stars What am I supposed to do with this??.......2006-03-14

The psionics handbook works because there are races and creatures already in the game that use psionics, so more rules on psionics help clarify and add depth to something that was already there. There's even a whole psionic-heavy setting, Dark Sun, that nearly requires a psionics system to even really play it.

Incarnum however drops out of the sky from nowhere. There's no roots or hints that this new power was around before in any form. No setting has anything like it. In order to even use it, it seems every DM is going to have to throw some huge setting- changing event just to justify its existance.

A fair book. Cool sortova' mako energy Final Fantasy VII thing. It just doesn't fit. Create an Incarnum based setting guys, or give me some official storyline of how it came into the worlds I already play in and I may give this book a shot, but until then it's just too weird and not worth the headache to try to come up with a use for this system.

2 out of 5 stars Lifeless, but faithful to the story.......2001-11-14

Kate Lock's homage to Tiffany Mitchell is a factually accurate rendering of Tiffany's life, in the form of a diary that was found by Bianca Butcher after Tiffany's death.

We don't get to learn anything about Tiffany that we haven't already seen in the show (and that's a shame, because she sometimes came across as a a one-dimensional and shallow character).

If you're watching EastEnders in Outer Mongolia or on some weird-and-wonderful US cable channel that's about five years out of date, you may want to buy the book to catch up on Tiffany's story, but beware the spoilers - it'll probably ruin everything for you!
