Book Description
Explore one of the richest and most rewarding aspects of Western art with this comprehensive easy-to-use, portable guide to Christian symbols.
Organized like a primer, with hundreds of entries in 50 categories -- from A for Angels to Z for Zodiac -- this handy pocket reference enables you to recognize at a glance the identity and meaning of all the elements in any Christian work of art. 162 paintings from every century illustrate the enduring themes of our biblical heritage.
A short introductory essay explains how to use the handbook and the functions of symbols in art. Cross-references, illustrations, a detailed index, and the pocket-book size make A Handbook of Symbols in Christian Art an invaluable work for museum-goers, students, travelers, art collectors, and general readers.
Customer Reviews:
Concise and Informative.......2000-08-31
As stated, this is a handbook, therefore the format is easy to read and gives you the basic information. If something then strikes your fancy you can then do further research based upon this excellent starting reference point. If you have very little religious background this will help you understand Christianity in Art. Even Christians will find the book informative and full of things that they did not know. For example, did you know that the number 1000 represents eternity? The handbook is layed out alphabetically, beginning with angels and ending with zodiac, all for your convenience. My only complaint is that the art depicted is small, in black and white and therefore does not show the details of the pieces of art. A good book for anyone interested in art, specifically Christian Art. The explanations of the symbolism is very good, it tells you just enough.
Great Reference Book.......2000-05-04
This book is very informative and interesting. It is laid out in an easy to read way and is a great reference book for anyone who loves art. I would definitely suggest this book to anyone who has ever looked at Christian art and wondered what exactly does it mean.

Simplistic Symbols.......2007-08-06
As a clergy woman, I am always looking for good resources to hand to a worship team or a creative task force. I was hoping to find something with the same creativity as Jill Liddell's "The Patchwork Pilgrimage" and Nancy Chinn's "Spaces for the Spirit," but with more direction for inexperienced groups. Trust me: this is not it! Yes, it has perfectly reasonable Christian symbols and they are configured in such a way that you can easily adjust size and use them as templates for felt banners or other such projects, but there is nothing unusual and nothing exciting. Anyone with modest talents and a search engine could have found this material in clip art sites or similar places.
Unless you are working with children or want totally conventional banners or art work (something that looks just like the banner of the church down the street--), skip this book. My thought is that it would be better to inspire groups with exceptional art and let them make mistakes than to limit them to pedantic design.

a reference handbook, not a theological or devotional book.......2005-08-16
Coomler's handbook is a collection of common icon patterns (line drawings, usually presented backwards or mirror-image) with short decriptions (some better than others).
This book is not a theology of iconography, nor is it a devotional work. It's a reference text, a pattern book which may be used to identify icons & iconographic themes, read and interpret common iconographic symbols, etc. It can be extremely helpful when understood and used correctly, especially when supplemented with good theologies of iconography and devotional works.

Book Description
The totally restored, revamped and researched blow-by-blow recounting of the most spectacular title bout in the blood-soaked history of Hollywood. "This book documents in rare detail the back-room haggling and the attempted ego-bashing that is part of the movie business." - Gene Siskel; "Told with the passion of an advocate yet with the objectivity of a crack reporter, The Battle of Brazil is a chilling, inevitably hilarious account of a great film that almost got away." - USA Today.
Customer Reviews:
The fight to get Brazil away from Sid.......2003-10-19
This is an updated, revised, expanded version of the 1986 book by the same author. (Same title, too.)
It's really good, covering the fight to release the director's cut of the film. The villain is Sid Sheinberg, one of the executives at Universal. Sid says he doesn't want to change Gilliam's movie, but he wants to change the end. Changing the end changes the whole POINT of the film. So Sid pretended that the battle is over the length of the movie. He tried to get between the producer (Arnon Milchan) and Gilliam. He sort of succeeded, too.
Then the LA critics chose Brazil as the movie of the year, even though it hadn't been released. (The author was one of those critics.) That move raised the stakes much higher, and ultimately led to Gilliam's victory.
A Good Book.......2003-10-03
When I was a little kid my favorite story was David and Golaith. I especially liked the part where David cuts the giants head off at the end. THE BATTLE FOR BRAZIL isn't exactly a story of biblical proportions. But it is a war worth reading about.
Jack Mathew's book chronicles the creative and business side of one of the strangest films ever made. The book is an act of life imitating art and exposes the deep flaws in the Hollywood system, and the subborness of the little man who won't give up.
Read the book and see the movie. You'll be really glad you did.
The Battle of Brazil.......2002-08-29
Funny and entertaining. Gilliam is crazy and hilarious! There are so many classic moments in this book, I recommend it! It also gives you a good feel for the Hollywood system of making movies.
Anyone interested in movies must read this book.......2002-02-26
Terry Gilliam's film Brazil is now regarded as a classic, and rightfully so. It's a perfect blend of words (McKeown, Stoppard & Gilliam's screenplay) and image, and succeeds in realizing a completely different and yet perfectly believable world. I'm an avid filmgoer, and I consider Brazil the *best* American film of the past 25 years (better even than Raging Bull). A brilliant sci-fi/fantasy/black comedy/romance/Orwellian vision of the future--or the present--the film details the efforts of Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) to find his dream girl, trucker/terrorist? Jill Leighton (Kim Greist) with the help of renegade plumber Robert de Niro. Ian Holm, Ian Richardson, and Bob Hoskins contribute wonderful cameos, and Michael Palin is as evil as he's ever been.
Although Jack Mathews is clearly on Gilliam's side (how could anyone with an ounce of sense NOT be?!), he lets Sid Sheinberg, who might possibly be Satan, speak, and Sheinberg simply hangs himself with his own words. Mathews' wonderful tome includes an original shooting script with some magnificent deleted sequences.
One important point to remember while reading Mathew's detailed account: The studio knew *exactly* what they were getting--the players involved had already *read the screenplay*! Gilliam's film was both on time and largely on budget, and yet the powers-that-be couldn't accept the film.
This story has a true-life happy ending--Gilliam's gone on to make The Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, and, according to the imdb, is finally starting on Good Omens. Sheinberg? Retired and, in all likelihood, forgotten except for his role in this near-fiasco. Like in the film, imaganation triumphs. One wishes critics' groups would make a point of awarding a "Best Unreleased Film" of the year.
Read, and smile.
"Brazil... where hearts were entertaining June..."
A great book about a great film.......2001-09-26
Terry Gilliam's satirical film (usually referred to as being science fiction though its actually the furthest from that) Brazil is one of the greatest unseen film of the past few decades. While the film has a strong cult following, most mainstream audiences never had a chance to see this film and the few that did found themselves confronted not with Gilliam's original vision but instead with a severely shortened and defanged bastardization that was edited under the supervision of less-than-visionary studio head Sid Sheinberg.
How this came to be is the subject of Jack Matthews' fascinating book, The Battle of Brazil which follows the creation of this masterpiece from the germ of inspiration to the film's triumphant success at the 1985 Los Angeles Film Critics Awards. Along the way, we get a wonderful view into the heads of both Gilliam and Sheinberg. (Though the book is clearly on Gilliam's side, Sheinberg is not presented extremely unfairly. If he comes across as a bit of an unimaginative ogre at times -- well, that's because he was.) We get the full details of Gilliam's battles with Sheinberg over both the length and the tone of the film and, in one of the book's best chapters, an in-depth analysis of the differences between the two versions. This chapter, I think, beautifully illustrates how, just through selective editing, you can change the entire feel of a film without reshooting a single shot. Much as how you can't help staring at a car wreck, there's a sick fascination with how Sheinberg was able to change Brazil from one of the greatest films of all time to a bland, unmemorable love story without any apparent sense of humor.
The behind-the-scenes details of the making of the film itself are anecdote filled and a great read with candid details that cover everything from how Gilliam's original vision evolved during the shooting to his on-set difficulties with actress Kim Griest. Especially amusing to me were the lists of actors also considered for the lead role of Sam. One's mind boggles at some of the suggestions (Tom Cruise!?) and makes Jonathan Pryce's sly lead performance all the more appreciated.
The last half of the book contains Gilliam's shooting script for his version of Brazil, along with copious footnotes that clear up several of the obscurities (i.e., what the singing telegram girl is singing, what Michael Palin's daughter says to Sam) that have occasionally confused even the most devoted of audiences. Its a brilliant script to boost.

booka-ma-thing love hate.......2005-07-21
the contents of this book WILL entertain kids as old as 80 !
however the darn pages keep falling off the spiral binder. the pages are made of thick paper (wonderfull) but with constant adjustment of the wire binding, this makes it difficult to turn the pages easily.Have resorted to taking it apart and getting o- rings to keep every thing intact. If you can make it through this frustration you will enjoy. By the way... this is the second one I have purchased in the past 8 years.
Too short.......2001-08-09
This book is supposed to have Thousands of Miles Worth of Hands-On Games and Activities, and yet it is only 18 pages long. This book'll last you for less than 100 miles before you get bored of it, I reccomend Kids Travel instead.
Dont read this reveiw!.......2001-06-17
Its one of my favorite books. It gives me hours of interactive entertainment. Stories, board games, contests, logic, and more. I think kids aged 7-12 would enjoy this
Great Book, but not quite enough to do..........2000-06-07
I like the book a lot! All the games they have in there are really fun, but can get boring after awhile. They should've put in more games, or at least make the games a little more interesting. All in all it's a well designed book, sturdy, durable and all the pieces are well contained!
Fun! Fun! Fun!.......2000-04-26
This book is an absolutley excellent choice for a long car trip. It keeps kids entertained for hours. It's nice for you to get some peace and quiet while they are playing games like finger twister and coin races.
