Book Description
A landmark work of art history: lavishly illustrated and extraordinary for its thoroughness, A History of African-American Artists -- conceived, researched, and written by the great American artist Romare Bearden with journalist Harry Henderson, who completed the work after Bearden's death in 1988 -- gives a conspectus of African-American art from the late eighteenth century to the present. It examines the lives and careers of more than fifty signal African-American artists, and the relation of their work to prevailing artistic, social, and political trends both in America and throughout the world.
Beginning with a radical reevaluation of the enigma of Joshua Johnston, a late eighteenth-century portrait painter widely assumed by historians to be one of the earliest known African-American artists, Bearden and Henderson go on to examine the careers of Robert S. Duncanson, Edward M. Bannister, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Aaron Douglas, Edmonia Lewis, Jacob Lawrence, Hale A. Woodruff, Augusta Savage, Charles H. Alston, Ellis Wilson, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., Horace Pippin, Alma W. Thomas, and many others.
Illustrated with more than 420 black-and-white illustrations and 61 color reproductions -- including rediscovered classics, works no longer extant, and art never before seen in this country -- A History of African-American Artists is a stunning achievement.

A Priceless Treasure.......2003-06-21
This is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. As an avid reader, I do not make that claim lightly. What makes this book so remarkable is how Bearden and Henderson both bring the artists to life and give you a deep appreciation for their work.
No other book I've read on the arts has left me similarly breathless. While many of them have been quite competent at explaining things like "Impressionism," "The Renaissance," or "The Harlem Renaissance," none have so beautifully balanced an explanation of the artist and of the artist's work. By bringing the people to life, Bearden and Henderson have brought the art to life. They have made a priceless contribution to our understanding of African-American artists, their work and the challenges they had to overcome to pursue their passion.
This book is a must-have. It will deepen your appreciation of art and of the contributions that African-Americans have made to it.

nice book.......2000-02-21
i had a class in college that used this book as a text book. ienjoyed it then, but it wasn't until later that i really had a chanceto sit down and enjoy it. information is good and the pictures are plentiful. this is a very nice book for anyone interested in african american art and culture. another book that i would like to recommend is called souls grown deep: african american vernacular art of the south, volume one. i bought it at an art fair in new york in late january. i'm not sure that it has been released nationally. i've contacted amazon in an attempt to get more info. i have it so i know it is out. this type of book (souls and the history...) are too few and far between.
A great resource for teachers.......1999-12-18
This book is a great resource for teachers of American art or culture. Each chapter provides an interesting biography of the artist along with descriptions of his or her work. Students respond to the art more fully by knowing something of the struggles and daily realities faced by each artist. A great resource for teachers or for the school library.
A Wonderfully Stunning Revelation.......1999-11-29
This outstanding potrait of little-known, but great and wonderful African American Artists should be required reading for all fine arts programs... The depth of research is evident and this work, a work of Art itself, is to be treasured and placed within the archives of the world's great libraries and the homes of all of us who love and appreciate great art and "Great Books"!..Sylvia Rosario, President,Black Satin Collectibles - email: bmc@blacksatincollectibles.com
fantastic.......1999-04-25
This book shows that white males have systematically excluded the voices of African American artists. Let's finally do away with white male hegemony and cowardice in the face of dissenting voices. This brave and courageous book explores white male racism, and we must be grateful. However, I would like to have seen an equal number of African American Women artists presented. I guess some of the old hegemonies remain.

William Faulkner Stories for Kids.......2007-07-12
From the cover: In the 1940s, at his home, Rowan Oak, in Oxford, Mississippi, Faulkner told ghost stories to the children in his family. One of those children, Dean Faulkner Wells, has recounted some of these stories in this book. Though the world knew Faulkner as a Nobel Prize-winning author, the children of Rowan Oak called him "Pappy." and knew him as the teller of tales that were tragic, sorrowful, funny, and sometimes terrifying. Presented here are the haunting and heartbreaking story of Judith, the chilling tale of the Werewolf, and the macabre story of the Hound.

Book Description
French cartoonist Voutch offers a cartoon cocktail that's equal parts art, cynicism, humor, and tenderness.
· Filled with snide doctors, newfangled technologies, relentless media, communication faux pas, unreasonable bosses, and dysfunctional relationships, this stateside offering of Voutch's most popular French cartoons leaves nothing lost in translation.
Employing the sophisticated art style gouache, which differs from watercolor in that its use of pigments is heavier and more opaque with greater reflective qualities, Voutch is as enjoyable to view as it is to read.

Customer Reviews:
very pleased.......2007-01-31
So far I'm finding this book helpful. I've only used point and shoot cameras so far and I just purchased my first DSLR and have no experience with SLRs to begin with. I needed a book that DIDN'T assume previous photography (not snapshot) experience. This is it. I foudn the explanations helpful and am not worried about any technical errors mentioned in the previous reviews. Once I'm ready for more srious picture taking, I'll find other sources to make up for any of the mistakes there may be in this book. All in all I think this is a good beginner basics book that covers quite a bit of material.
Good overall guide to digital photography.......2007-01-02
I like the overall layout, discussing various topics relating to digital photography. Have only read 1/2 the book and have already learned a lot, found new things to try, and new "accessories" I want/need to buy. :-)
As others have noted he does have some errors, some so obvious you wonder how they weren't caught, but then I've found errors in virtually every book I've ever read so I don't fault him too much for that.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking to understand more about how digital photography works, how to use their camera, memory, computer, etc. as an entire system to take, edit, store, and print photos.
For Beginners........2006-12-03
How to Do Everything with Your Digital Camera, Fourth Edition( 2005)will change every beginner into an effective digital camera user. 424 pages divided into 4 parts : part I on Your Camera from pages 1 to 170 covers the history of digital camera and then goes into the process of shooting a photo( exposure, composition, etc); part II from page 171 to 234 covers the act of Transferring Images to the Computer( file formats, organizing); part III from pages 235 to 370 goes into Editing Images and finally part IV talks about Using Your Images from page 371 to page 428.
So, about 40% of the text is devoted to the process of shooting a photo and about 31% to Editing. A good proportion to my mind.
There is a Detailed table of contents per chapter that takes a little more than 6 pages and an 8-page Index for zeroing quickly on a particular piece of information.
At the center of the book , there are 8 pages of color photos to explain corresponding techniques. Almost every page is illustrated with black and white photos to show as well as explain a technique.
To illustrate the clarity of the language used , here is a sample :
" what the heck is a 9.3mm lens ? If this digital camera were a 35mm camera its 9.3mm lens would give you the same picture as a 50mm camera, for instance. Many photographers know that 20-35mm is considered wide angle, while 50-90mm is thought to be "normal" - great for portraits, for instance. " Pages 10 and 11.
In the Introduction , the author invites readers to write and send him questions and comments at his indicated e-mail address; he also mentions his website.
A great book for Digital Photography beginners !

Not worth the trouble.......2007-05-05
I bought the guide on line after I had purchased the game online. I think I paid like $17 and had to wait at least two weeks for it because it was shipped from Switerland!??? When it came in I was so excited because I am a huge SH fan, but when I opened the package and took the book out, I was very dissappointed. I knew there couldn't be much to this guide when it only had roughly 160 pages to it. I mean, the game itself takes at least 50-60 hours to complete, and that's not including the side quests. Sure the guide mentions things I would not have other wise figured out on my own(maybe), but when you're really needing some crucial help, it's not there.
I guess buy the guide if you're a big SH fan, you know , just to have, but otherwise, just look up a walk through online and don't waste your money.
Use an Online FAQ, that's all this is........2006-11-22
Sure this book has everything you need to get through Shadow Hearts II, but since it relies solely on verbal descriptions, you might as well not waste any money for something you can get for free on Neoseeker or Gamefaqs, or some site like that. The only reason I got one is because it was $1.25 at a game shop. $1.25 is cheap enough for me to pay for the convenience of not having to look up a good FAQ, but a price in the teens definitely is not. Don't buy this unless you are an extreme fan who wants to see some repetitive concept art.
I had so much fun with this game.......2006-08-18
I'm very suprised that this game has only gotten a 2 star review. I LOVES THIS GAME and still do. It wasn't the best I've played but it's definitely on my favorites list. The characters make me laugh. I guess the reason people don't like it as much is because of the ending.
Not much "strategy" in this "strategy guide"`.......2005-10-15
No Maps.
Directions (NSEW) often reversed.
Many, many items MISSED.
No guidance on sidequests
No information on Magic crests
No information on items/armor/enhancements
No "strategy" provided.
Nice picture.
A Walkthrough That Is Almost There..........2005-08-22
Usually Brady's Walkthroughs are pretty good. Whenever it comes to the comparison between Brady's and Prima, Brady always score better. Nonetheless, the Shadow Hearts: Covenant walkthrough is something that takes you there but not really there.
The book has a pretty good layout for the main story walkthrough. You will have no problem tackling the main story. However, the main drawback is it doesn't have an area map. The dungeons for each area are really big. So simply describing where to walk is not enough as there are places that can confuse you when it comes to how it looks like. There is a small compass map in the game which I think Brady's, if they want to spend more time to make a perfect walkthrough (like the FF X one), they could trace those maps so that we actually know where we are going. Of course after you spend quite some time inside the dungeon you will start to recognise the areas, but walkthroughs without dungeon map could be quite disappointing.
Then it comes to the side quests. The arrangement of the side quests are quite random too as some are at the beginning of the appendix and then others are at the end of the appendix, with a huge section of glossary in the middle. So you will need to flip to and fro to look for the one that you are doing. Which could be pretty annoying. Further the description of how to achieve you goals are too simplistic that you sometimes can't figure out what they are talking about. For example, in the Dog Shrine, sometimes they address the name of the stone tablet but sometimes they describe the stone tablet. This causes more confusion than helping. It will be much better to actually guide the reader by naming the stones themselves. Further it will help a lot if they actually show how the puzzles are like. They did that in the Omnimusha walkthroughs, I cannot understand why they can't do it here this time. The Aromatherapy information of Lucia also lacks the details that one would expect too.
Nonetheless, the section of what needs to be achieved by area and by character is very helpful and easy to access. This gives the reader a clearer idea of what needs to be done. The Solomon's Key solution and the Solomon's Trial solution are pretty good too, though there are one or two mistakes in the Solomon's Trial reward section.
The walkthrough does have pretty good boss and enemy strategy though, which is a very good side of the walkthrough as some people might need to rely on this to handle difficult bosses.
In all, the Shadow Hearts: Covenant walkthrough is not all disappointing, but it doesn't really show the depth and completeness that Brady's guides usually deliver. It's not bad and it's not good either, it's a lurk warm production for a very addictive and enjoyable game.

"In WHAT'S YOUR GAY & LESBIAN ENTERTAINMENT I.Q.?, Karvoski pretty much covers it all: queer film quotes, drama queens, video trivia, movie kisses, and who done what with whom and where in what medium. This is the kind of book you just HAVE TO OWN, not only to wow your friends with your Hollywood knowledge, but as a great resource when pondering all those baffling questions like, 'Was so-and-so REALLY queer?'
