Colorful overview of art techniques.......2004-08-06
I like to draw when I have the time. I'm not all that good at it, but it's a relaxing and enjoyable hobby. So with that disclaimer, let me say that this book gave me a decent overview of a variety of illustration techniques along with useful examples of how the art is produced from start to finish. The book is nicely designed and there are photos and illustrations on every page along with informative text. I found it curious that all of the excellent example work was by European illustrators -- but when I came upon the copyright page in the back of the book, it notes that this title was originally published in Spain. The material it covers is probably too elementary for professional or formally-schooled artists, but for beginners and amateurs it's an easy-to-read compendium of techniques that will stimulate your creative juices.

A NEW SPIRITUALITY.......2001-07-13
John Dugdale is one of America's finest photographers. We must celebrate his artistry--he is still a young man with so much more work and so many dreams still in him, although he is 80% blind from HIV.
This volume, published by Leo and Wolfe Photography could not possibly be more beautiful. At a full 13 1/2" x 13 1/2" it is magnificently hardbound with beige/grey linen covered boards and the artist's self-portrait on the front cover.
John Wood, poet and photography critic, has supplied a lengthy, wonderful appreciation of Dugdale and an investigation into his works: images of transcendental beauty. Poet Morri Creech has contributed "The Pilgrimage of Lazarus" (after the photographs of John Dugdale) and, perhaps, best of all, Pulitzer Prize winning novelist, Robert Olen Butler, gives us "A Prayer for John Dugdale" which begins "Saint Ludwig pray for me. I am going blind. Just as you went deaf."
Dugdale's cyanotypes are superbly reproduced in this once in a lifetime volume. They take us to another time, another place and a new spirituality. Even at this very high price, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Best.......2000-03-09
Opening volume I of "21st The Journal of Contemporary Photography" places the viewer in a world of quiet contemplation, made possible by the rich, luxurious photographic reproductions and insightful commentary found throughout. The tactile beauty of each page invites us to keep turning, while the content only makes us wish for more. Further volumes will answer this wish, incorporating the same attention to detail that is sorely lacking in other photographic publications. The annual publication of "21st" is the antithesis to a society dominated by consumables, `dot coms', and digitalization. Great art takes time and "21st" is no exception; the tri-tone reproductions inside are breathtaking, while cover photographs by Keith Carter and John Dugdale(Vol. II) are worthy of display. Add to this some of the finest writers on the subject of photography, and it is clear why a lavish publication such as "21st" takes time. This is a book to be opened again and again, much like the finest photograph demands repeated viewing. One will never tire of "21st The Journal of Contemporary Photography" because it is not only meant to be looked at and read but more importantly, to be savored and treasured.

Customer Reviews:
Great volume of a sorely underestimated series........2007-01-27
For those who have read Shaman King up to this point, they know that it is a highly entertaining story with adorable, exaggerated, unique characters, edgy art, and even pinches of drama and the macabre. If Shaman King is new to you, then you will still love this volume. Just be sure to read the first couple pages for a brief overview of the previous chapters.
I love this volume because (I believe) it is the first in which Anna, the overbearing fiancee of our eternally laid-back hero, Yoh, really shows how much she loves Yoh (and gets jealous at the idea of him being unfaithful, though I will not reveal that hilarious scenario). The volume focuses on the fight that Yoh must face with his spirit, Amidamaru, to get into the Shaman Tournament, but he also faces a trial against Japanese Ainu shaman Horohoro in the end. There are more volumes, check those out too! I hope that everybody tries to get into Shaman King at one point or another. It is thought-provoking and also completely humourous, too. Highly, highly recommended.

Shonen Jump Series 1 Books.......2007-01-04
This was a gift for our son for Christmas! It was great he has read most all of them and now wants most of the series.
Shonen Jump Manga Magic.......2005-11-09
This is easily the best collection of Americanized manga out. As most know, Shonen Jump was at one time a Japanese exclusive magazine that made its hop across the Pacific in 2003 for American fans to enjoy. Since that moment, it's become the best in manga and now contains a majority of the manga juggernauts.
This collection is a great start for those of you who are interested in reading manga, or for those of you who missed out on some of the earlier issues of Shonen Jump and want to catch up on what's going on. It also has the beginnings to the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z mangas, which can't be found in Shonen Jump.
Below is a listing of the manga in this box, as well as a small description of each:
(1) Dragon Ball: This is the start of the Dragon Ball world. It explains the origins of Goku and his relationship with the Dragon Balls.
(2) Dragon Ball Z: The beginning of one of the greatest animes ever in its purest form. Unpolluted with minutes-long shouting and infested with excellent action and story, this details the story of Goku as a father and a husband, as well as following some of the other favorites of the Dragon Ball world.
(3) Naruto: Probably the best in Shonen Jump, Naruto is a tale of a boy fox-demon who wants nothing more than to earn his place in the world, and does so by training to become a ninja, despite the mistrust directed at him by some of his teacher and the hatred he receives from his fellow students.
(4) One Piece: A boy eats the mysterious Devil Fruit at a young age, making his body into rubber and also cursing his body: should he ever fall into water, he would sink instantly to the bottom. Despite that, he wants nothing more than to be the pirate king of a world of oceans.
(5) Shaman King: Yoh, a boy who can not only see ghosts but control them, comes to Tokyo to train to become a powerful shaman in the hopes that one day he'll win the title of Shaman King.
(6) Yu-Gi-Oh!: A story of constant morals and themes, it details a young, pint-sized, pointy-haired boy's struggles with a mysterious puzzle/necklace that grants him dark super powers as well as an alter-ego.
(7) YuYu Hakusho: A juvenile delinquent dies saving a child and finds out that his next was entirely unexpected and therefore gains a chance to come back to life. What he later finds out is coming back to life also makes him a spirit detective.

This pack is totaly awsome! If your obsessed about anime than this is the thing for you! I collect and read Shonen Jump magazine, and I kept getting curious about how all the stories had started. So I got this and it answered all my questions.

Book Description
He is one of the most amazing, popular, and iconic characters in the history of motion pictures. His 1933 debut was a legendary piece of pure cinema - simultaneously a terrifying monster movie, epic fairy tale, tragic love story, and deeply resonant cultural myth. His name is King Kong. Ray Morton's King Kong - The Making of a Movie Icon is the first book to chronicle the making of all seven feature films in which the character of Kong has appeared, including the hotly anticipated Peter Jackson film opening in December 2005. It is generously illustrated with photographs, production art, and promotional materials from the author's extensive private collection. Morton has interviewed the surviving members of each major film. A colorful overview of the tremendous amount of collectible Kong merchandise is also on view for all the fans of Kongdom to devour.
Customer Reviews:
Typical Movie book with long words and boring info............2007-08-12
I do not know why the writer spends so much time with the 1976 remake and only gives the 1933 movie shorter page time....and let's not even talk about the travisty film that Peter Jackson made.
A survey of everything from the masks and making of the films to their marketing........2007-01-07
Fans of the legendary 1933 monster will relish the first book to detail the making of all seven feature films about Kong in KING KONG; THE HISTORY OF A MOVIE ICON. From how the character was first created and developed to the sequence of films which starred Kong and produced a host of variants and spoofs, including reviews of the Kongs that never made it to screen, KING KONG packs in vintage duotone and color photos from movies, ads and scene shots to accompany a survey of everything from the masks and making of the films to their marketing.

Funner than a barrel of monkeys . . . .......2006-08-12
While I consider myself more a modern horror afficianado I found this book to be a fascinating read. The opening portion which details the making of the original KING KONG offered enough intriguing tidbits to convince me to watch the classic for the first time. It also features an equally detailed on the much maligned 1976 KONG remake as well as his occasional bouts with a variety of ovesized Japanese mutants. However, my favorite section had to be a tongue-in-cheek exploration of the handful of godawful monkey ripoffs. With all this, what more could you really ask for . . . Except possibly for the author's precise yet fun exploration of other classics. I myself would love to see his version of all things JAWS.
KING KONG LIVES!.......2006-04-26
KING KONG: THE HISTORY OF A MOVIE ICON FROM FAY WRAY TO PETER JACKSON is THE book on the history and magic Kong. It is detailed, intelligent account of the KONG phenomenon both on-screen and off. There are many books that are written about film franchises and this one is a cut above the rest because Morton is so passionate about his subject. It is an enjoyable read! This is the KONG book for die hard fans and newbies who are discovering KONG for the first time. Highly Recommend!
Superb from start to finish.......2006-04-07
Ray gives a detailed and intricate insight into the King Kong phenomena. I believe this is the first time the 1976 film is laid bare in such rich, authetic detail - startling information on every aspect of the maligned Dino production. Don't worry, everything that is Kong is given its due including the collectables! Nice one, Ray. Look forward to your next book!

Book Description
A lyrical combination of memoir, poetry, trivia, and rock history provide the follow-up to Daniel Nester's first book on the British band Queen. Nester blends personal anecdotes with Queen's music to form the liner notes to his own psychosexual awakening, including an exquisite tribute to the unforgettable Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991. Short essays — or riffs — are devoted to each Queen track on their last five studio albums, as well as a few solo and live efforts. The book is seven inches square, the same size as a vinyl 45-rpm record.

Customer Reviews:
Take the book for what it is.......2007-09-27
You've got to accept this book for what it is -- a very large set of chess puzzles to solve. No, it's not a comprehensive manual of the game. No, it doesn't teach openings. No, it's got nothing on strategic conceptions of middle-game play. There could be a whole long list of what it is not.
But take it for what it is. One, it's fun to try to solve these puzzles. If you like that kind of thing, you can throw this inexpensive book in a briefcase, purse, or pocket. (Or keep it in the john.) The puzzles are nice diversion. Two, I believe it can really help play to go over and over the puzzles. Doing that will, I think, imprint the repeating patterns that allow these kinds of combinations. It will become easier feel when a position offers combinational opportunities - for you or your opponent - and smoke the combinations out.
A word about the descriptive notation. The publishers have kept this book in print by some photoprocess from the original of it, which is now a half century old. A half century ago, descriptive notation was the standard in the English-speaking world. It's now all but died out. The publisher could find a wider audience by having someone translate the notations to algebraic. I assume they've thought of it but decided it's not a profitable move. I don't know; maybe they're right. Hate them for that decision if you will, but anyone still can enjoy and profit from this book as is. Descriptive notation is very easy to master, even if you think it stinks, and the the book includes a clear explanation of how it works.
LOW QUALITY BINDING, DO NOT BUY.......2007-06-07
This book has the worst quality binding. Every page you turn will drop out. And the puzzles are categorized, making it too easy and pointless. When you're in a game, someone doesn't say to you, find the pin or find the x-ray attack. No, the themes must be jumbled for it to be of any use.
Fun. .......2007-06-02
What I like about this book, is that it doesn't have anything like stars according to how "difficult" it is to solve each problem. What really matters is how beautiful it is, how it makes one surprised. If you agree with me, get this.
A great tool for working on the calculation of variations.......2007-02-24
Of course, this is not a revolutionary work or somesuch, but it is a great tool for working on and improving a player's calculating power. The exercises are not terribly difficult, but for intermediate players, the tough part will be doing them in your head. However, this must be learned!
The genius of the book lies in its size--convenient to carry around in one's pocket. If that's the "genius" of the book, then why the five stars? Well, someone had to actually write the book! I have not yet seen anything that compares to Laszlo Polgar's chapter on 600 king's field attacks in "5,334" but c'mon, do you really want to carry that thing around? Sometimes I do carry it around for that one chapter, but still...
And for those of you out there who are screaming that Alburt's "Chess Training Pocket Book: 300 Most Important Positions and Ideas" accomplishes the same, I would say that "1001" is just as good, has more examples, and in general involves tougher calculating tasks. "300" is overrated and overpriced (for its purpose). I no longer buy into all this garbage about "secret Soviet training methods."
But I digress. I recommend this book not so much because the examples are brilliant, but because you have to practice doing the calculations in your head. This is what intermediate players need to advance to the next level.
Tatics is 99% of chess and 99% of the fun too!.......2007-01-09

Book Description
Centuries ago, in 1972, when flares were hip, "Layla" was in the charts for the first time and everyone had long hair, a thin, sly youth with an art O level and anarchic dreams went to live in an Oxford commune. Although his career was embryonic, he became known as Rob the cartoonist. Life was a round of parties, illegal substances and world-changing ideas. But before long, Rob's geodesic dome leaked rain, his dog fell pregnant, and his girlfriend fled to New Mexico. Real life began to intervene.
Some time around 1973, the party ended--abruptly and humiliatingly--in a police station in Newbury. Reserving his right to remain silent, young Robert decided to save his excuses for a future generation. Now it's time to come clean. "Thin He Was and Filthy-Haired" is his remarkable (teenage) life story. And it's funnier than you'd ever believe.
Customer Reviews:
Thin I Was and Filthy Haired Too.......2002-11-13
Being of the same generation as Bob I shook my head knowingly between outbursts of hysterical laughter, whilst reading the book in only three days. Apart from being relieved to learn I'm not the only bloke whose early sexual experiments were about as successful as Kryten's attempts to tell lies, I also shared his frustrations in coming to terms with Straights and their bread-head world. But far from being self-indulgent nostalgia this book captures those years in our lives when events seemed to sweep us along by their own momentum. In the company of people who likewise challenge the secure world around them, Bob finds himself caght up in a conflict between easy middle class existence and trying to be a working class revolusionary. The gate crashing of the Oxford Ball is perhaps the hardest bit to believe, but any creative license is well justified. I liked the fact that he adds an update as to the present whereabouts of the main characters at the end of the book. To be honest they mostly come across as a better crowd than the tossers I used to knock around with and now avoid like one of Rimmer's lectures on the Hammond Organ.
Bobbie, you middle-class bastard!.......2001-06-25
Bobbie, I am extremely annoyed that a middle-class bastard such as yourself should write a book this good, which is why I am trying to reduce your average star rating. And subtitling it Memoirs of a Bad Boy? Everyone knows I'm the bad boy of the Red Dwarf cast and you're just an overprivileged middle-class whiner. Everyone: read my books instead! They're honestly quite good!
Not so thin and filthy anymore.......2000-12-19
For fans of Red Dwarf or Junkyard Wars, the early years of Robert Llewellyn's life will leave some wondering "How did he ever wind up as an actor?", and for others it will all make sense. This wonderfully written auto-biography invites us into the '70's world of sexual self-awareness, upper-class prejudices, free-spirited hippies, silver polishing, party crashing, toast, weed, and geodesic domes.
Mr. Llewellyn manages to keep the reader trans-fixed from beginning to end. His "tell it as it is" writing mixed with copious amounts of humour makes for some embarrassing moments if you're reading this in public places.
I highly recommend this book for true Llewellyn fans. It's a very revealing look into his youth and his background. From cartoonist to convict, from visionary to drag queen. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll laugh some more, but all through-out the book you'll never stop wondering "this guy is Kryten?!"
"Thin He Was and Filthy-Haired", "Man in the Rubber Mask", "Man on Platform 5", "Punchbag", and "Sudden Wealth". An impressive collection of truly wonderful works.
Far out and ethnic..........2000-12-03
I love Mr Llewellyns books. "Rubber mask", "Punchbag", "Platform 5"- they are all first rate. I finished reading "Thin he was..." his teenage autobiography last night and I have to say its my favourite so far. The title is derived rather arcanely from a quote about aliens- "Dark they were and golden eyed".
The novel tells the story of Rob(the cartoonist) who in his teens went ever so slightly off the rails. He lives in a geodist dome, smokes weed and crashes Oxford balls in drag. A fantasy writer called Duncan finds Robs rebellious behavoiur extremely rich and makes a pass at him. Young Rob is flattered, but his hormones are too much raging for attractive females. He is also desparetly seeking a direction in life. His romantic and anarchic ideals seem to have no place in "The System".
Unlike anything else Llewellyn has written, this storys innocence goes straight to the soul. He perfectly captures the sights and sounds of the time and his characterisation is utterly charming. At one point he mentions having never read "Catcher in the rye". This is interesting because his book has a similar engaging narritive with the wild excitment of "On the road".
