Product Description
Ann Hamilton: An Inventory of Objects is a major new publication of the work of one of today's most important and influential artists. The book is a comprehensive catalogue of Hamilton's object-based work from 1984 to 2006. The more than 130 color plates document photographs, sculpture, video, audio and language pieces (both unique and editioned), as well as multiples and prints. Many of the objects relate to the large-scale installations for which Hamilton is internationally known. Each object in the inventory is accompanied by a text by Joan Simon, who also contributes a significant new essay setting Hamilton's objects in critical context. The complete inventory of Hamilton's objects made over the past 20-plus years is reproduced in this essential publication, which also contains an extensive biography, bibliography and index. The book, designed by the Swedish designer Hans Cogne in conversation with Ann Hamilton, is a beautiful object in its own right and evokes many of the conceptual qualities of Hamilton's art.

Book Description
The installations created by American artist Ann Hamilton are as atmospheric as they are intellectually complex, as grandiose and whimsical as they are serious and political. Whether she is employing tons of work clothes, a herd of ostriches, thousands of dollars' worth of pennies, kilometers of typewriter ribbon, loaves and loaves of bread dough, or teams of volunteer workers, Hamilton's process-oriented, site-specific environments incorporate viewers, teaching them to use their senses anew. In one of her most recent and spectacular works, which gives its name to this book, the artist inhabited a former torpedo factory at Yokosuka--a symbol-laden place in Japan, consecutively used by domestic and American armies for extensive military bases--and hung charcoal rods from the ceiling on strings of different length. The result was a space oppressed by the heavy shadows of the dense, blackened mass of dead matter that hung from above, filled with an abysmal sadness that conjured up the darker chapters of the history of Japanese-American relations.

Book Description
For painters faced with the metaphorical death of painting, the way forward has indeed been puzzling. nevertheless, the territory continues to be explored. As Luc Tuymans put it, iPainting is a way of thinking and constitutes an enormous archetypal pattern which artists constantly fall back upon.i The Undiscovered Country addresses, through 84 stunning reproductions, the ability of painting to tackle issues of representation now that, in the broader culture, the representational function is occupied almost exclusively by photography. Chronogical, it begins in the 1960s with paintings by John Baldessari, Fairfield Porter, Gerhard Richter, and others, which range in approach from painterly to conceptual. The argument continues with figurative painting from the 70s by Philip Guston, and proceeds via influential paintings of the 80s and 90s by Thomas Lawson, Kerry James Marshall, Luc Tuymans, and others. Also discussed is a group of younger contemporary painters including Mamma Andersson, Mari Eastman, and Thomas Eggerer. The Undiscovered Country does not position painting as a threatened medium, nor as one unjustly underrated, but instead looks carefully at the work of a number of painters who have thoroughly examined their own practices, and who continue to find approaches to representation that can only be resolved through painting.

Book Description
One of the most serious challenges to environmentalism that has emerged in the 1990s is the so-called Wise Use movement. While operating under the guise of an independent movement of small landowners, it is in reality a backlash against environmental protection measures, funded and organized by corporations with a vested interest in preventing further environmental gains.
Let the People Judge collects the writings of a wide range of thinkers on the Wise Use movement and the controversies that fuel the Wise Use debate.

Book Description
It has been known for over a century that there is an afferent(body-to-brain), as well as an efferent(brain-to-body), component to the visceral-atonomic nervous system. Despite the fundamental importance of bodily afferent information- sometimes called interoception- to central nervous system control of visceral organ function, emotional-motivational processes, and dysfunction of these processes, including psychosomatic disorders, its role did not receive much attention until quite recently. This is the first comprehensive review of this topic and it covers both neurobiological and psychobiological aspects. The author first defines the issue and gives an historical background starting with the James-Lange theory of emotion, and addresses learning and motivation, roots in Pavlovian conditioning research, and operant conditioning of visceral function. In the second section he reviews recent scientific findings in the neural basis of visceral perception and studies in cardiovascular-respiratory and alimentary interoception. Finally, he discusses several related areas of research and theory including drug state issues, interoception and psychiatric disorders, and bodily consciousness, and suggests directions for future investigation. The book will be of interest to scientists in neurobiology, psychology, and brain imaging, to indivuals in related clinical fields such as psychiatry, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, and clinical psychology, and to their students and trainees.

Installation Art in the New Millennium: The Empire of the Senses

Temporary installations are ubiquitous in art spaces today, but there is one artist whose mysterious and sensual room-sized works unsettle even the jaded viewer. In Ann Hamilton, art writer and independent curator Joan Simon offers an intensive guided tour of nearly two decades of projects that now exist only in the 300 evocative photographs that illustrate this book. Simon lucidly discusses Hamilton's explorations of time, language, and memory, beginning with the early pieces involving massive quantities of unlikely objects (a floor carpeted with thousands of pennies stuck in honey; a table covered with 14,000 human and animal teeth embedded in iron oxide) to the "slow emptying" of recent work in photography, video, and performance. While no book can re-create the complex of sounds, smells, and actions that make Hamilton's art so compelling, Simon helps those who have experienced some of the artist's works to understand their connection to the realm of ideas. --Cathy Curtis
Book Description
A 118-foot-long wall seems to weep as droplets of water ooze from thousands of tiny holes . . . 750,000 pennies form a vast copper mosaic . . . . Creating massive sensory environments that combine sound, text, video, photographs, books, and huge quantities of material substances, Ann Hamilton makes theatrical installations that have been praised as "evocative . . . powerfully disturbing . . . always compelling" (Vogue). Now this internationally acclaimed artistwinner of a MacArthur Fellowship and chosen to represent the U.S. at the 1999 Venice Biennaleat last receives the comprehensive study that her work merits. Author Joan Simon has had unprecedented access to Hamilton's archives, and she has drawn heavily on the artist's own words and photographs to prepare this incisive portrait, the only complete documentation of Hamilton's art to date.
Customer Reviews:
First timer for Ann Hamilton.......2007-03-23
This is a great book about Ann Hamilton. It contains far more information if you would think with amazing big size photos of her work. While, it does missing a few of her works that contain more of audio in them. I still think this is a great book. Additional paper cover is pretty, but it gets damage very easily, so I don't like that. Without the paper cover, the solid cover is very plane and boring. I think the book could have used some more design though in its cover, but I forgive them because book is so good.

The Complete Films Of John Wayne (Film Library)
ASIN: 0967053404 |
Book Description
Once in a lifetime there may come to an author the opportunity to produce a book as distinguished as this acclaimed tribute to the Dukea man as large as the American West he so loved. It is the first book ever to have the complete cooperation of the late Michael Wayne and is a classic production that spotlights John Wayne's West from reel to real through 400 exciting images, with text by Jane Pattie. These visual remembrances, many from private collections, are high points from five decades of his film and ranching careers. There are 276 pages of colorful reminisces of the man who was John Wayne, the film icon, and Duke Wayne, the loyal and generous friend, including the story of the 26 Bar Ranch in Arizona co-owned by Wayne and his best friend, Louis Johnson, cattleman extraordinaire.
The centennial celebration of John Wayne's birth will occur on May 26, 2007, 100 years after he was born Marion Michael Morrison in Winterset, Iowa. This imposing western biography salutes him as a timeless American.
Customer Reviews:
Man Of the West........2006-05-27
This book is a book Mr. Wayne would have enjoyed. The pictures and text is excellent. The true cowboys of the west were not of the moral statue of Mr. Waynes Movie roles but they should have been. Yes he made some less than able pictures but they were rare. And of the many western stars - ie- Mcrea, Scott, Ford, Holden. Lancaster, Cooper, Flynn- they were very good but John Wayne star shines greater and will forever. He was the embodiment of the Western American. He was what young boys hoped to become, and grownup they regretted never becoming!!!! Thank you Mr. Wayne for your life in films.
John Wayne, the western legend.......2006-01-09
For the western movie or John Wayne fan this is a must add to your library. A bit about the man and a lot about his western films, and the films are where the legend springs. Well done with lots of pictures and Michael Wayne's pick of his dad's ten best western films, which I as a fan of the genre, would concur. Maybe not the greatest actor ever, but certainly a darn good one who was underrated for most of his career, and one who gave a picture of the west that, while perhaps not terribly accurate, has endured for decades because it celebrated most of the positive attributes of the spirit that made the country what it had become, at least as of mid century.
There have been few actors that have reached the statue of this man, and endured for anything close to his run of popularity. Recommend the book for what it is, the celebration of that portion of a career that made the man an icon.
Enthusiastically recommended for Western film buffs.......2002-05-06
Enhanced with a foreword by actress Maureen O'Hara, and graced with an informative text by Jane Pattie, John Wayne: There Rode A Legend is a gorgeous, superbly illustrated coffee table book showcasing the life, career, movies, deeds, and memories of the world famous actor John Wayne, best known for his many classic American West movies. Filled with both color photographs and black-and-white television and movie stills from before the firm establishment of color TV, John Wayne: There Rode A Legend is a remarkable tour of and tribute to the actor's life and work, from the 30's to the 60's. Of special note are the highlights that reveal John Wayne's humanitarian legacy, from when he had a gravely ill Navajo girl flown to a hospital 100 miles away on his personal plane to the creation of the John Wayne Cancer Institute years after the great actor's death from stomach cancer. John Wayne: There Rode A Legend is beyond compare and enthusiastically recommended for Western film buffs and the legions of fans of a truly unique actor and his enduring work.
John Wayne...There Rode a Legend.......2001-08-21
All I can say about this book is that it is the best book out there about our national treasure, John Wayne. He is as popular today as he has ever been and it was a pleasure to find this book through a friend. It's a huge book, with great, rare photographs about Duke's West. I had read some of the other reviews, and I was also not aware that Duke was a cattle rancher in real life. The book is brimming over with great art and photographs. If your looking for a gift for a friend or just to give yourself a treat, this is the book for you. I was impressed as much as the great 'impressiveness' of the book.
A NEAR HIT.......2001-08-04
BEING AN AVID JOHN WAYNE FAN I AM COMPELLED TO KEEP THIS BOOK IN SPITE OF THE HAPHAZARD PRESENTATION OF HIS CAREER. THE QUALITY OF PAPER,PICTURES,AND PRINTING WERE EXCELLENT. IN MY OPINION THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PRESENTED IN THE ORDER THEY OCCURRED.

No Limit Hold 'em: Theory and Practice

Book Description
Poker is a game which many people play, but in which few excel. To be successful requires a great deal of work and study, and a deep understanding of those concepts that govern winning play. Yet it is fairly easy to win at poker. All you need to do is learn to play tight, and stick to easy games usually those prevalent at the low limits. But there is a problem with this. While this is a winning formula, it won't allow you to do much better than "minimum wage." But there are a small number of players who do much better than this. These are the experts who have mastered the proper skills and have done their share of thinking.
This text contains those essays the author wrote from 1996 through early 2001. Topics include: General Concepts, Technical Ideas, Strategic Ideas, In the Cardrooms, Hands to Talk About, The Ciaffone Quiz, and Two More Quizzes. In addition, advice is offered on which game to play, controlling steaming, marginal hands, selecting the best game, bluffing, unusual strategies, raising with suited connectors, keeping poker honest, reading hands, checking aces, and much more.
As with the first two books in this series, Poker Essays, Volume III is designed to make the reader do a great deal of thinking. In fact, very few readers will agree with everything this text offers, but the information provided should help most people become better poker players.
Customer Reviews:
For serious players, Malmuth is always worth reading.......2006-10-11
This is the third collection of Malmuth's poker essays, and like the other two is interesting to read and full of valuable information. It is also more recent that the other two volumes (see my reviews) with a copyright date of 2001. Much is the same with the quizzes on hands played, discussions of the differences between hold'em and stud, and strategy considerations in various games, and Malmuth's signature section, "In the Cardrooms" in which he writes about cardroom problems, gives suggestions, etc. Here he delves into possible collusion in the games and gives some advice on how to keep the games honest.
In this respect I recently read Dirty Poker (2006) in which cheating in poker is examined at length, although by a writer (Richard Marcus) who is not a regular player. Here Malmuth with an assist from David Sklansky makes it clear that collusion in the cardrooms he plays in is unlikely and certainly couldn't last long. A good point he and Sklansky make is that it is not all that easy for two players to successfully scam a game, and more players working together would be fairly obvious to the regulars. I believe they are correct, and my experience over the years has been about the same as Malmuth's who says he has never encountered collusion in the clubs. I believe I did once, in the early nineties at a ten and twenty game at a club in the Los Angeles area. The betting pattern was not just obvious, but glaringly obvious. I got up, and before leaving and never returning, said something to the floorman. I don't know what the result was. Possible collusion on the Internet is another matter, however.
Which brings me to the weakness of this book for the contemporary player, which is the dearth of writing about Internet games. I hope Malmuth is currently playing on the Internet and is writing some essays about that experience that will appear in his next collection.
One of the more interesting essays is "Which Is Bigger?" (stud or hold'em). Malmuth and "an associate" compared records at the $20/$40 level and discovered to their surprise that they had a larger variance at stud. Malmuth's explanation is a bit convoluted but seems essentially right. However, his statement "the bigger the standard deviation, the bigger the game" is true only if the games are the same size. The fact that they had an hourly standard deviation of $280 for the hold'em game and $350 for the stud game is not a reflection of more action at the stud game but is a direct result of the fact that stud and hold'em games with the same betting limits are not equal in size. Because there is an extra betting round (a Big Bet betting round) the stud game is bigger. Malmuth dances around this most salient point when he should make it clear that that extra double bet round is the real difference and not because he and his associate as expert stud players have learned to play looser. (Their relatively small S.D. suggests otherwise!)
The way to figure the standard deviations for comparison purposes is to adjust for the absolute size of the games, which would lower their higher figure for the stud game. If that is done, I believe it will be seen that hold'em is relatively speaking both a bigger and a chancier game.
Personally I believe the expert player has more control at stud, despite the hidden river card than he does at hold'em in games with mixed talent. Quite simply seven card stud requires more skill because in addition to all the skills required at hold'em (which also exist at stud), there are the exposed cards to watch and evaluate. Malmuth has previously argued about which is tougher, stud or hold'em, and if memory serves has come to the conclusion that stud is indeed tougher.
Malmuth might ask himself if he had to play against the best stud players in the world or the best hold'em players, who would he prefer to play against? For myself, even though I am probably a better stud player, I would definitely try to get lucky against the hold'em experts rather than the stud experts.
One other thing. I know Malmuth was a math major but there is no excuse for a sentence like this: "That is only the person for whom they are intended for should have knowledge of them." (p. 161) The second "for" should be "that," I presume, but it's still ugly. Also on page 159 there is this, "You must be able to work successfully with your fellow dealers...and the players to whom you deal the cards to." (Cut "the cards to" or at least the dangling "to" on the end.) Additionally, Malmuth habitually uses the word "less" in such constructions as "This not only slows down the game...but it reduces the house drop since less hands are dealt." (p. 163) "Fewer" is the correct word when you're talking about things that can be counted rather than, say, weighed or measured.
But these are small matters. What really counts here is the value of the book to the serious poker player, and that is considerable because Malmuth is an accomplished professional who has a deep and abiding love for the game. For many readers, because of the increase in the number of quizzes and the thorough hand discussions, this collection may be his best.
Best in the series, maybe one of the best poker books ever........2003-01-22
I got this book two days ago, and have already read it twice. It came highly recommended by a winning player in my ...10/20 stud game, and I haven't been disappointed.
The essays are taken from Malmuth's writings in Poker Digest and other magazines over the past few years, as with the first two volumes. I thought the first volume was excellent, and the second was very good. This is by far the best.
Poker Essays III, in my opinion, now joins "The Theory of Poker", "Super System", and the "for Advanced Players" series on the list of the most important poker books.
As usual, Malmuth succeeds admirably in forcing the reader to think about many aspects of their game most players are usually unaware of. He discusses, for example, specific flaws in many average players who overrate their own abilities. And the last two sections are wonderful additions to this volume: "Hands to Talk About", and then quizzes. The "Hands" section discusses specific hands/situations in depth, to try to bring together all poker ideas into making a decision. The quizzes section includes two of his own, one hold'em and one stud, and one previously published by Bob Ciaffone (whose book "Improve Your Poker" is also on my short list of great poker books). There are 50+ essays in the book, and I found all of them interesting, thought-provoking and relevant. One of the things I like best about Malmuth is that he finds topics to write about that are completely ignored or forgotten by most players but that are either directly or indirectly relevant to winning play.
As with Poker Essays I and II, I'm sure I'll be rereading this book several times over the years.

Customer Reviews:
Everyone has a purpose...........2007-08-17
A feel good movie that leaves you feeling that everyone has a purpose no matter how insignificant people around them think they are.
A Beautiful Collector's book.......2006-10-15
This is more of a collector's book than an informative book--what's in the movie is exactly in this book. However, there's an interesting section about making the film--the penguins were very curious about the camera! This has a beautiful cover and beautiful pictures. If you loved this film as much as I do, get it! The only problem is, some of the panoramic shots are grainy, and you have to hold the book out to see a smooth picture. I knocked a star of for that.
Penguins march from the pages in full color.......2006-04-13
Luc Jacquet's MARCH OF THE PENGUINS (0792261828, $30.00) was a surprise movie hit, attracting many audiences who didn't particularly care about penguins or nature films. Narration written by Jordan Roberts accompanies vivid color photos by Jerome Maison in a movie companion book filled with full-page vivid color. Both are top picks for general-interest libraries.
Amazing.......2006-02-17
This book brings the movie, and indeed the penguins, to life. It is a pleasure to read and to get lost in the beauty of Anarctica and the amazing feats of the penguins. I highly recommend it!
If you want to completely relive the movie..........2006-01-04
If you already saw the movie, loved it with every fiber of your being, and you want to relive it over and over again, then by all means get the book--it has absolutely stunning photography and those too-cute-for-words penguins.
I love penguins and love seeing great photography, but since I already saw the movie (a documentary), as well as watching the (somewhat inane) extras on the DVD, I don't really feel the need for the book. It is basically a picture book of the movie, with much of Morgan Freeman's narration as the text. There is no additional penguin information, just what you saw in the movie.
So your options are: If you thought the movie was good but you probably wouldn't watch it again, then you may want to find a different penguin book. If you liked the movie and want a nice coffee table book, then you will probably like this book. If you could not get enough of the movie, then this book is for you.
