Many congregations today are examining the role the arts play in creating sacred space and in inviting people into the presence of God for encounter and engagement. They are realizing that the work of the artist and the work of the church are inexorably bound. Both seek a response, a transformation of thought in those who come to see and enter to hear. When art and art-making become embedded in the religious community, work side-by-side, look at each other face-to-face, and listen to each other, each helps the other do its work.
Art in Service of the Sacred encourages congregations to take seriously the role of visual art in worship and in the broader life of the church. This rich resource explores the dynamics between art, artist, and the church. It proclaims the power of art when used as art, reclaims the presence of religious symbols in worship, asserts the importance of the aesthetic dimensions of ecclesial space, and recovers the role of visual art to engage our senses and imaginations as we seek to encounter God in our lives.
The DVD included in this book shows scores of photographs of the author's art: before and after photographs of spaces that have been transformed, vestments and paraments, and temporary liturgical art for conferences and retreat settings. There are also images depicting the transformation of a narthex, fellowship hall, balcony, and church hallway. Several images give insight into the author's creative process, from the original imaginings to the completed project.

This volume includes multiple renditions of every prayer, thus illustrating the broad diversity within traditional intonation of each prayer mode. In accordance with the traditional role assigned to the prayer leader of each service, renditions are presented at levels appropriate to the lay cantor (baal t'filo) as well the professional cantor (chazz'n). Liturgical texts that were traditionally intoned by cantor and choir, or by choir alone, are also included.
Annotative commentary explains the liturgical role and character of each service and analyzes the musical content of each prayer mode within it. It also explains the techniques employed in applying the prayer mode to specific liturgical texts and how the applications reflect the literal as well as spiritual content of the texts.
This set comprises four books covering the fourteen weekday liturgical occasions, with annotated commentary.

Book Description
Following the conquest of Mexico by Cortés and much of Central America by Alvarado, cathedral churches were established throughout the region, all with European-style polyphonic choirs. Among the most important of these early centers of Spanish culture was the cathedral of Guatemala City, where polyphony was already in use in the 1540s.
Shortly after 1600, the organist and choir director of the cathedral collected, organized, and copied into choirbooks all of the then-extant music used by the choir. The manuscript presented here in modern edition, one of at least five choirbooks prepared at the time, contains a number of otherwise unknown works by such major Old World composers as Francisco Guerrero and Cristóbal de Morales. Significant works by Hernando Franco and Pedro Bermúdez, choirmasters of the Guatemala City Cathedral, are also included. The manuscript presents a unified repertory for Holy Week and for the Salve services in Lent, including four settings of the Passion, for which the Spanish were famous throughout Christendom. Some of the works predate the sixteenth-century reform of the Roman Breviary and Missal, among them the original versions of several Vespers hymns and Magnificat settings by Guerrero that are otherwise known only in later versions found in Spanish sources. An extensive historical introduction by Robert J. Snow discusses the formation of the cathedral's musical repertory and illuminates both Old and New World practices of sixteenth-century Spanish liturgical music.

Josef Hoffmann: Furniture, Designs and Objects provides a comprehensive look at the designs for furniture, decorative objects, and printed material that cult designer Josef Hoffmann (Austrian, 1870-1956) created for the interiors of his visionary buildings. The book shows how Hoffmann produced a sense of aesthetic unity in his built environments by balancing bold formal innovation with simple yet elegant geometric and organic motifs.
Hoffmann was among the first architect-designers to apply the concept of Gesamtkuntswerk, (the effort to produce a "total work of art") to his field. Along with the painter Gustav Klimt—a major collaborator and influence—Hoffmann was a founding member of the Viennese Secession. He went on to establish the Wiener Werkstätte with Koloman Moser in 1903, a commercial design workshop that successfully blurred the distinctions between fine and decorative art.

I was raised on this book from the age of 3 up, and it never "terrified" me; it was fascinating and a little scary to think these things COULD happen, but overall the lessons from the book stayed with me FOREVER. Stay well-groomed; eat your food; don't play with matches; don't suck your thumb... All great lessons, beautifully illustrated and cleverly told!

I have to disagree. Parents of today obviously have not developed a better way of socializing and civilizing their childen. kids are crazy, rude, obnoxious and don't care about manners anymore these days. Adults have no control over their kids because of what you CAN'T do or say to your kids. Instill fear on kids again. It worked for me and it worked or my kid. This book has been handed down from generation to generation in our family. None of us ever got in trouble and we have learned respect for ourselves and others. Take a look at the kids of today. They are your future. Scarey, isn't it? You may want to reconsider your thinking.

As I just wanted to redeem a gift certificate and on this line looking for some books written in German I found Der Struwwelpeter that has been one of may be the best books to teach me as child like later as father to educate my 3 children. Meanwhile, each of them are living in his/her own families...together with their children and Der Struwwelpeter...That's great.

I am a American student learning German as my second language. My German teacher recently purchased this book and I thought it was wonderful!! It's a good book to read to children and it makes me not want to play with fire! :) I can't understand every word in the book because I'm only in my second year of learning German but what I can read of it is great! When I am older, much older, I hope to teach my child/children english and german at the same time. I also plan to read this book to them. Having children is a FAR way off but it's a plan! And don't worry about me talking about children because I plan to be married and 26 or 27 when that happens! lol.
Der Strwwelpeter.......2001-09-03
This is a classic German children's book. My parents read this to me when I was a child; it was one of my favorite books. The book teaches children about manners. It teaches you that when you do something wrong, there are consequences. Der Struwwelpeter was originally written about 150 years ago.

Great Reference, however..........2007-07-19
This is actually a great book, and I would give it 4.5 stars. The other reviewers are correct in the wealth of information between the covers; not only in-depth reviews of almost 600 movies (which as a reviewer said, comes in handy in a genre where there are sooooooo many stinkers; this book saved me from one or two costly purchases), cross-referenced by writer, director, actors, alternate titles (re-"Duck You Sucker-Fistful of Dynamite") and possibly most important, musical composers. My only two contentions with this book are the following:
Not all of the alternate titles are listed consistently. It took me awhile to find the original title for "Samurai!" (aka "The White, the Yellow, and the Black"). Luckily for the directorial filmography, I was able to look it up by director. 1/2 star off.
But a full star off goes to the binding. Most likely a low-budgeted produced book with a high price, the binding split just hours after I began reading it. At almost $40 list price, it almost is priced out as a cheap college course textbook. I would have hoped at least it would have been in hardcover.
All in all, if you can look over these two details (one minor, one major, in my opinion), this is a FANTASTIC reference for anyone's genre library, up there with "Videohound's Dragon: Asian Action & Cult Flicks". Check that out too!
Very comprehensive..........2007-05-23
I purchased a hardcover of this book some time ago. [It's dated 1992, first print?]. Amazing that over 500 of these films were made.
Worth it for the lists by performer and director (among others).
The illustrations are mostly movie posters and are in B & W, unless this new book has changed that.
Something to be aware of is spoiler alerts. In quite a few of the descriptions Weisser gives away key moments like the character dies or the money is counterfeit and the like.

Great Compilation.......2007-02-02
This book describes most if not all of the Italian Westerns made in that era. It's a great book to go to about certain westerns that were made by the directors like Sergio Leone, Corbucci and Sollima. I have many books of this type and this one stands out as one of my favorites. Thank you Thomas Weisser for producing this book!!
The "Bible" for the Spaghetti Western enthusiast.......2006-04-06
This is the definitive reference guide on the Spaghetti Western. An excellent, well written and informative book. In addition to factual information on each film (titles, original foreign language titles, cross references, director, actors, basic plot, etc.), Thomas Weisser also gives brief recommendations and opinions, which definitely come in handy in a genre in which there were a lot of really bad, low budget movies made. For the most part, the facts are accurate, and the opinions are useful. There are also best and worst lists, actors appendices and other great extras. Absolutely recommended!!

Great book for elementary school kids!.......2006-07-09
My 9 and 7 year olds love this book! I was looking in bookstores for crossword puzzle books (only crosswords, not all the other puzzles that come with them usually). There were none to be found. Amazon has this great series of just crosswords and they're perfect! Clues are just hard enough that they have to think a little, but not so hard that they get frustrated and give up. A great find!
