Thanks a million.......2007-10-02
The book has minor water damage(not a big deal) and arrived really fast. Thanks for getting it to me before my classes got crazy.
I give it an A..........2006-12-30
I needed this book for one of my college classes and the Amazon price was almost 3/4 cheaper then in the schools book store. This book was only used for about 3-4 months and from what I saw from the textbook... it was great. I learned a lot and I might keep it around just in case I need it for a future class. But overall, I give it an A...
Everything you know about design principles but forgot.......2000-01-02
Pros: A definite must-have book and recommended reading for designers, artists and teachers. Excellent for art teachers seeking project ideas for students in traditional art/design media, also provides a design refresher for teachers with students in digital media, as the principles apply to web, cd-rom and new media design (but not animation. However, there is a section on objects in 3D space).
This book covers key design principles and art techniques that you may have forgotten after art school.
Cons: A lot easier to read for precticing artists and designers; may be brain freeze to art students goggling at the compact knowledge. Not recommended reading unless student is mature enough/is in the higher years/is truly interested.
Initial impression based on format, book thickness and the language used may appear too stiff and seem like very heavy reading at first, specially to first time art educators. Read the book in topics you need in order to digest info better.
After a while the format becomes familiar, the information astoundingly clear/well researched and you realize the book was brilliantly organized. Eureka!
As with all art/design reference book collections, this makes a good backbone book that could be supplemented by others, as it cannot cover everything. Ex: For selecting/using type and organizing layouts try "The Non-Designer's Design Book" by Robin Williams, Peachpit Press. There's a web book version as well.
Final comment: Basic Visual Concepts and Principles, a thumbs up, definitely must have reference.

Book Description
Not long ago the Raw format was limited to high-end digital SLR cameras–which meant you pretty much had to be a professional (or at least quite serious) photographer to take advantage of it. Not so today. Now that Raw is included on even the simplest point-and-shoot cameras, shutterbugs of all stripes can start taking advantage of its greater editing flexibility to produce better final images. This guide is the place to start. In these pages, veteran author
Ben Long begins at the beginning, explaining exactly what Raw is and why photographers should use it. He then describes the theory, shooting, and image editing practices needed to work with Raw files. Ben also provides an overview of software used to convert raw files and a thorough explanation of how to use Photoshop Elements to edit Raw images. Some cool Camera Raw tricks, tips for shooting for Raw format, and a glossary of important terms round out the offering.

Great Book for Beginner/Intermediate Users.......2006-03-17
If you're just starting out using Camera Raw in Photoshop or Elements I think this is a great book to start with. If you are, however, fairly experienced, it probably is going to help you only nominally. I think the layout of the book is very nice and there is very little "fluff". I think the problem some of the reviewers have with this book is that it wasn't matched with their experience level. I personally feel this is a well done book even for intermediate users.
Good Basic Raw Introduction.......2006-03-03
I had already been using RAW for some time and wanted to see if there was anything I was missing. This book does a nice job of explaining how to use RAW, but I didn't find anything I wasn't already doing.
Wonderful intoduction.......2006-02-27
I really enjoyed this book. It explains clearly the nature of raw capture, nicely describes the advantages, and takes the reader through "Camera Raw" the Adobe raw processing software. If you're experienced you might find the book too simple. But if you're interested in beginning raw processing I think you'll find this a readable and informative book. I particularly liked the beginning in which the differences between raw and JPEG are described. The one limitiation is that it doesn't deal adequately with some of the other well known software for raw processing. However, since the basic objectives are the same in all the programs and Adobe makes the most popular photo processing software this isn't a serious problem.

Very informative and complete.......2006-02-17
Very solid introduction into Camera Raw as used by Photoshop CS, CS2 and Elements. Many advanced ideas are pretty easy to follow with the fine examples included. Explains why raw format is the better choice for serious digital SLR photographers. Differences between CS2 & Elements should also help those choosing between those two programs.

UN UNH!.......2006-10-14
NO! Go to jail, do not pass go!
I bought it, big $26 mistake, same junk as comes with Aperture...Nothing at all new!
Skip this and go beyond. Shame on Peachpit for even passing this off as a learning tool.
SHAME!! ZERO STARS!!
Wait for the next one.......2005-12-28
This book is merely a text copy of the information that ships with the training DVD you get when you buy Aperture. In other words, you already have all this information if you own the program. The only value to this book is as a companion to the DVD or if you don't own the program and want to see what it can do. I'd wait for the next title in the series if you want some real training.
Do NOT buy this book! .......2005-12-22
This slim volume is mostly white space and very large type. None of the information in this little booklet is particularly helpful nor illuminating and it should have all been included with the application anyway.
Buying this dumb little "book" will only reinforce your frustration with Aperture and your distaste for Apple.
Don't do it.

Its beyond the techniques. Its about real photography........1999-07-13
This book goes beyond the equipment and techniques of wildlife photography, its goes into different ways of getting yourself into the position for the shot and different places to go for contact with the subjects. Learned as much from it as I have other books that deal with techniques. Well worth it to learn more about wildlife photography.

Political Nonsense.......2007-07-25
This book covers many areas of digital imaging, or appears to do. If you bother to actually try to get any benefit from the book, you're wasting your time.
The first thing you realise is that the author should be a politician - talks a lot of words but doesn't actually say anything or commit himself to anything.
I was "lucky" to obtain this book at 25% of the cover price, via a book club, and I still feel I was robbed!

No one knew more about manipulating a movie audience than Alfred Hitchcock, the legendary master of suspense. But while many film directors have written books about their ideas and techniques, Hitchcock discussed his personal theories almost exclusively in the short articles he wrote throughout his long life. Here, for the first time, most of these hard-to-find pieces have been collected. Sidney Gottlieb's well-edited volume features Hitchcock's thoughts on actors ("they should be treated like cattle"), effective film editing, the power of the thriller, proper uses of a director's talents, and the keys to any good suspense film: sex and murder. Gottlieb's introduction and running commentary is illuminating and helpful.
Book Description
Gathered here for the first time are Alfred Hitchcock's reflections on his own life and work. In this ample selection of largely unknown and formerly inaccessible interviews and essays, Hitchcock provides an enlivening commentary on a career that spanned decades and transformed the history of the cinema. Bringing the same exuberance and originality to his writing as he did to his films, he ranges from accounts of his own life and experiences to techniques of filmmaking and ideas about cinema in general. Wry, thoughtful, witty, and humorous--as well as brilliantly informative--this selection reveals another side of the most renowned filmmaker of our time.
Sidney Gottlieb not only presents some of Hitchcock's most important pieces, but also places them in their historical context and in the context of Hitchcock's development as a director. He reflects on Hitchcock's complicated, often troubled, and continually evolving relationship toward women, both on and off the set. Some of the topics Hitchcock touches upon are the differences between English and American attitudes toward murder, the importance of comedy in film, and the uses and techniques of lighting. There are also many anecdotes of life among the stars, reminiscences from the sets of some of the most successful and innovative films of this century, and incisive insights into working method, film history, and the role of film in society.
Unlike some of the complex critical commentary that has emerged on his life and work, the director's own writing style is refreshingly straightforward and accessible. Throughout the collection, Hitchcock reveals a delight and curiosity about his medium that bring all his subjects to life.

This book was a good entertaining read that provided fascinating information, but did not get bogged down in the process.
The Master of Suspense becomes Master of Boredom.......2007-05-28
I'm a huge fan of Hitchcock movies and wanted read more about him. I was greatly disappointed with this book though. Like others have said, it is repetitive to the point of insanity. After I read the first half of the book I found myself just jumping ahead to parts of interest just so I could get the dang thing done with. Whoever put this thing together obviously had even less patience and regard for this book than I the reader. While there were a chapter or two that were interesting, overall it wasn't worth the time or effort.
Very good reading.......2002-07-11
Yes, some of it dragged a bit. But overall I found it very interesting indeed. There was a chapter on the making of "Rope", as well as a speech Hitchcock made at a dinner which is worth buying the book for. His sense of humour is very humourous. It was fascinating to read all the things he had to say about filmmaking and how to please the audience. I read it straight through except that once I jumped ahead and read the chapter on Rope, but it's more the type of book where you read a chapter here and another there - whatever interests you at the moment. I thought it very good and I recommend it.
A rare chance to read a great director in his own (!) words........2001-06-01
So few of the great directors from Hollywood's Golden Age wrote about their craft, either its theory or practice, so this collection of articles, interviews, speeches, lectures and publicity pieces from Alfred Hitchcock is very welcome, even if most were ghost-written.
The volume covers his career from humble menial in 1919 to aging maestro in the 1930s, and includes his thoughts on acting, plots, the studio system, producers, production, technicians, genre audiences, Britain, and, of course, style.
There are some priceless anecdotes about Hitchcock's early directing days in the haphazard British film industry, a short story parodying Poe and sensationalist horror stories; the important essay 'Why I am Afraid of the Dark', acknowledging his debt to Poe and the Surrealists; an hilarious interview with a wannabe auteurist who doesn't even know what a cut is (Interviewer: 'our magazine is for 'the intelligent motion picturegoer''. Hitch: 'Are there intelligent picturegoers'!); and an intriguing transcription of a screenwriting session for 'Marnie' with Evan Hunter.
The great problem with this book is its editing. Firstly, Gottlieb's claims for the material are ludicrously disproportionate, and his lengthy introductions overstretch what is largely superficial material. Hitch's ruminations on the audience and narrative, say, do not look forward to the current interests of film studies as if he were some kind of soothsayer, but reflect the concerns of all film-makers working in the same periods. As Truffaut's book on Hitchcock proved in any case, it would be unwise to take everything the Master said at face value; and there is a typical unwillingness in these pieces to discuss the 'meaning' of his work.
More seriously, there is far too much repetition of material, as we watch Hitchcock recycling the same insights, stories and examples for different readerships; no amount of editorial sophism can prevent the reading becoming tedious.
Rambling And Forgettable.......2000-07-10
This should have been a great book. However, this collection of interviews, essays and writings from Alfred Hitchcock develops into an almost utterly incoherent mess that has no shape and is hard to get into.
The editor clearly loves Hitchcock and his work, it's just a shame this love is so poorly expressed. The constantly changing, unconnected 'chapters' will leave you confused and losing interest in finishing the book.
However, I endured all the way to the end. Whilst it's nowhere near the satisfying read it should be, there are a few - repeat a few - interesting tidbits of information. But unless you're a die hard Hitchcock fan you're better off avoiding this book.

'The Illustrated Collector's Guide To Hawkwind' - 176 pages.......2005-06-03
First book I've ever reviewed here on Amazon.I got this book with the copy of Hawkwind's 1975 epic 'Warrior On The Edge Of Time' CD reissue(see my review). It's an absolute must-have for all true Hawkfans, like myself. When I first got this book,I had SO much to learn about the long-running UK space rock/psych band. This book is just the place to learn about such.Except, now it's a bit out-dated perhaps. It has vital information from 1969-1992.Not only does this book have a cross-reference guide of songs from "Adjust Me" to "You Know You're Only Dreaming" that tells you each and every CD/lp that each song appears on,but B&W photos of most every Hawkwind album&video that was ever released up 'til 1992.Plus,there are two decent interviews with Dave Brock and resident sci-fi author Michael Moorcock.Let's not forget the group 'family tree' that lets you know when each past member like Lemmy,Ginger Baker,Simon House,Dik Mik,etc. had joined and left. But,wait there's more,a concert date list that's been already noted as being incomplete anyway and a few flyers as well as rarely seen artwork.Highly recommended.
An invaluable resource for any collector of psychedelia........1998-11-11
Formed in Early 1969 and playing one of their first shows outside England's Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, Hawkwind has always been at the forefront of musical exploration. Until now, getting a cogent perspective on the band's recorded oveure and ever-changing personnel has been as elusive as reading the spinning label of a 45 rpm record. Robert Godwin has undertaken this arduous task, and the results are close to stellar. With the help of Hawkwind members Dave Brock and Michael Moorcock (Moorcock contributed heavily in the lyric dept. in the 70s),Godwin has created a reference tool which is exhaustive in its scope and in every way essential. Tracing the band as buskers in England's Ladbroke Grove through countless benefit gigs and hallucinogen-fueled pyrotechnic excursions into the realms of high psychedelia, Godwin chronicles rehearsal tapes, bootlegs and studio outtakes as well as the band's 100+ vinyl and CD releases. Songs are cross-referenced by title as are the near epic-length space jams, EPs and singles. A must for every collector of 60s-90s psychedelia and an entertaining read for the uninitiated, Robert Godwin's Illustrated Collector's Guide to Hawkwind has "Quark, Strangeness and Charm."
Book Description
The how-to-win guide for the blue chip of poker games.
Texas Hold'em, the game featured on the popular television programs and dealt at well-known tournaments, has quickly become the one to playand the one to win. In the context of teaching readers the basics of Texas Hold'em, this revised edition covers No Limit strategies and tournaments, and the basics for winning bigger cash pots. Although the dynamics for this version of the game are similar to its low-limit cousin, No Limit strategy is quite different. This revised book covers no-limit in much greater detail, as it relates to cash games, online games, and tournaments.

Going from the home game to the casino.......2005-10-22
This book showed me how to play serious hold'em -- I've still got a long way to go, but at least now I know what I don't know. Like most Idiot's guides, it's great at giving you the nuts and bolts basics on the topic. I'm sure more experienced players have the odds nailed and know what "outs" are, but I didn't before I read this book. It's also useful for learning where to play, whether on the Internet and even for types of players to look out for. I've already reread it twice, and I'm sure I'll refer back lots more times.
OTTIMO LIBRO.......2005-10-10
scrivo in italiano cosi' mi capite ITALIANI.
Onestamente posso dire che e' un OTTIMO libro, tutte le tattiche del gioco PRE FLOP,FLOP,TURN,RIVER e molto altro.
Molto facile da capire(linguaggio semplice).
CONSIGLIATO per i principianti e NON
The best bar none.......2005-08-19
After watching hold'em on TV and holding my own in games with friends, I decided to give playing online a try. I found the games alot harder and was frustrated that I not only couldn't win, but I was actually losing. I picked up this book, thinking I wouldn't learn much and found out that I knew almost nothing about how to win -- and some of what I did know was wrong.
From starting hands to odds, counting pots to understanding other players this book got me to break even within a week of finishing it. Since then (in about 4 months), I've won over $750 playing .50 - $1 and have just moved up to playing $1-2 online.
Strongly recommended.
Won me much more than the price.......2005-07-14
Before I read this I just tried to wait for good cards and hope for the best. The strategies in this book have finally made me a winning player -- and helped me understand exactly what it takes to make money in this game and move up from the low limits I currently play. As long as you aren't at my table, I recommend it!
Not for Beginners, Certainly Not for Idiots.......2005-07-01
The Idiot's Guide to Texas Hold 'Em, while thoughtfully written and chock full of very useful information is certainly NOT for the novice player. While I've been a fan of the "Idiot" series and their chief competitor, this particular pocket guide is, unfortunately, written well over the Idiot's head. Although it covers a weath of topics, it is unfortunately brief on far too many of them and tried to cover too much territory in too short a span. As a result the passages are often overly complicated, tangential and confusing. If this was the first book I had read on Texas Hold 'Em, I'd be more confused than before I started it!
I would recommend this short work for anyone who is a fairly experienced amature player with a few hundred online hands under their belt and another book or two prior to this one. In that event, Randy Burgess' thoughts and strategies - although as with any single author's opinion are to be taken with a grain of salt and not gospal - are useful and insightful.

Please! As if we the TV audience could not see where real arrogance and hypocrisy lie and on whom! We can spot real compassion and humility from a mile apart, and these qualities are nonexistent in this Tv host! She is nothing but arrogant, inhuman and insensitive with her audience! Please!
Outstanding.......1999-11-16
I read this book and I profoundly recommend it. This book gives people that little push we sometimes need to get to where we want to be. I found it to be very inspiring to women in general because she struggled a lot and never gave up. This is how she has reached the point she is at now, which is mere success. I highly recommend it not only as a great book, but as a confidence and self-esteem boost.
Entertaining and good example of/and for the latino women.......1998-07-20
As a journalist and a latina woman when I read this book I really feel identify with all the troubles that Cristina had to deal altrough her career and with all the cultural things that we bring with us as working latino women that succeed. To all the latino women that want to do something in a country like the US or those who want to be successful in the media, this book its a good reading and encourage, to have an idea of what we can deal with in the same journey. Writing in the same way that Cristina speaks the reading of the book it's quick and entertaining, you simply can't stop reading it.
Excellent.......1998-04-17
I really enjoyed this book because she spoke of all the struggles she had to face as a woman, wife and as a mother. I really can compare myself in certain things with her because right now I am struggling as a mother and as a wife. But she let me feel that someday I would reach my goal. She gave me an inspiration with this book. I am going to recommend the book to my sister because when I like a book, I usually do that.
