"A Collection of Interviews with Leading Product Designers".......2004-04-27
This book should be re-titled, "A Collection of Interviews with Leading Product Designers." I purchased this book, thinking that it would provide some sort of insight into the process of becoming a product designer - the education, experience, portfolio build-up, etc. Instead I read through eleven chapters of interviews with some of the leading industrial designers, but nothing, really, on "Becoming a Product Designer." I have taken a few product design classes and have discovered that product design is ineffectively taught through endless hours of lectures about past experiences of other designers, instead of actually helping to develop the skills of the aspiring designer. This book was reminiscent of those classes, and thus, i was somewhat disappointed. However, I gave it two stars because it does indeed have alot of info about other designers and it also does provides some insight into the other branches of product design. Unfortunately, none of the information actually talks about "How to become a Product Designer. This book merely describes how other designers decided to choose a career and what their opinions are in product design. So, if you're looking for an informative book on how to become a product designer, then don't buy this book. However, if you like reading about other designers and what their experiences are like as product designers, then by all means go ahead and read this book.

Book Description
A study of world architecture as seen through the eyes of ninety great masters of the camera, this magnificently produced book includes some of the earliest and finest photographs of architectural subjects. It takes us from the Paris of Atget and Baldus to Beato's imperial Japan, and from August Sander's vision of Germany between the Wars to Atlanta after Sherman's march.
Among the other photographers represented in the book's 148 plates are Talbot, Fenton, and F. H. Evans in Britain; Macpherson and Ponti in Italy; Salzman in Jerusalem; Chamay in Mexico; and Watkins, Stieglitz, Steichen, Abbot, and O'Sullivan in the United States.
Phyllis Lambert's introduction discusses the importance of photography to the architect and architectural historian. Richard Pare's essay examines the history of architectural photography and photographic techniques. The extensive catalog by Catherine Evans Inbusch and Marjorie Munsterberg provides detailed information on the photographs and biographies of the photographers.
Richard Pare is Curator of Photographs at the Canadian Centre for Architecture where Phyllis Lambert is founder and director. All of the photographs in this book were selected from the Centre's collection. Book Description
"This book will have significant impact in film and media studies because Kaplan so skillfully 'translates' the most interesting work done in trauma studies and takes it in new and original directions. It is illuminating, lucid, and persuasive." --Patrice Petro, author of Aftershocks of the New: Feminism and Film History "This book is an engaging read--a real page turner--not only because of its conversational style and beautiful prose but also because it addresses some of the most complex psychological issues facing our culture today." --Kelly Oliver, W. Alton Jones Professor, Vanderbilt University It may be said that every trauma is two traumas or ten thousand--depending on the number of people involved. How one experiences and reacts to an event is unique and depends largely on one's direct or indirect positioning, personal and psychic history, and individual memories. But equally important to the experience of trauma are the broader political and cultural contexts within which a catastrophe takes place and how it is "managed" by institutional forces, including the media. In Trauma Culture, E. Ann Kaplan explores the relationship between the impact of trauma on individuals and on entire cultures and nations. Arguing that humans possess a compelling need to draw meaning from personal experience and to communicate what happens to others, she examines the artistic, literary, and cinematic forms that are often used to bridge the individual and collective experiences. Case studies, including Sigmund Freud's Moses and Monotheism, Marguerite Duras's La Douleur, Sarah Kofman's Rue Ordener, Rue Labat, Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound, and Tracey Moffatt's Night Cries, reveal how empathy can be fostered without the sensationalistic element that typifies the media. From World War II to 9/11, this passionate study eloquently navigates the contentious debates surrounding trauma theory and persuasively advocates the responsible sharing and translating of catastrophe. E. Ann Kaplan is a professor of English at SUNY-Stony Brook, where she founded and directs the Humanities Instiute. She was recently the president of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.

Phil Capelle's Play Your Best Pool is by far the most comprehensive book ever published on playing pool. The book's 442 pages reveal hundreds of secrets and strategies that can help improve your game regardless of whether you are new to the game or are on the verge of going pro.
A complete course on the fundamentals includes over 40 photos that demonstrate the correct stance, bridge, grip and stroke. A series of checklists shows you how to practice and evaluate your game. The next two chapters cover everything you need to know about aiming and shotmaking. Ninety diagrams demonstrate gamewinning shots including banks, cuts, combinations, billiards and caroms.
The pros make pool look so easy because they've mastered the art of position play. Play Your Best Pool shows you how to use english and then provides you with over 130 diagrams on all facets of position play so you can also learn expert cue ball control. Phil Capelle's 21 Principles of Position Play alone are worth far more than the price of the book. Speed control, natural position, how to plan for three balls at a time and down the line position are just a few of the principles covered in this section.
Your success at 8-ball and 9-ball, America's two most popular pool games, largely depends on how much you know about the strategy of each game. In two big chapters you'll learn all about offensive and defensive strategies that can help you gain control of the table and keep your opponent in his chair. You'll find solid advice on kick shots, safeties, pattern play, break shots and much more. These two chapters alone contain over 170 illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
Very good!.......2007-05-16
I've read a number of books on the game of pool. I was very impressed with the authors grasp of the game as well as his very apparent love of the game. He has obviously studied the art form intensely for many years. I felt that his realistic, open minded approach and access to many of the current greats of the game make his advice quite invaluable to the commited student of the game. Buy this book if you're serious about improving.
wealth of resource.......2007-05-07
Phil Chapelle's book "Play Your Best Pool" is a wealth of resources. It is quite thorough and would be good for someone seriously interested in pool. It's got a 60+ page section on 8-ball, an equally thorough section on 9 ball, and more on the fundamentals, shotmaking, position play, how to improve, practice techniques, and equipment. My games have significantly improved by reading and using Chapelle's book. Highly recommended. So much information that a novice might be overwhelmed, and it might not be so useful if you don't have a home table to go through it all (I wish I did)...but still, an indispensable book.
Awesome indepth book.......2007-03-04
I got this book when i first became serious about playing pool, while reading it my game just kept going up and up and up, now i break and run several times a night. before it would be make a ball or 2 and that was it for my runs. it is a great book.
Play Your Best Pool.......2007-01-22
I have read eight books on pool. This is by far the best of the eight. The book is cramed with pool information. A no nonsense approach to playing the game. If you want to learn more about playing pool, this is the read.
Good fundimentals.......2007-01-13
I was pretty good at pool many years ago and finally have the ability to play again. I don't play at all well now. This book has helped me discover where my game is off. I needed to break down the basics and fix some problems areas. The info. in this book has helped me direct my children's pool game as well. It's easy reading and always there when I find the time to focus on the great game of pool.

Customer Reviews:
A Rare Find!.......2007-07-11
I've looked everywhere for books or video's that would provide instruction on the proper way to play Straight Pool. There were dozens of players that offered dozens of home-spun versions of the game, but until now, I have been spinning my wheels. This is the best and most comprehensive book that I have ever seen on ANY game of pool. I'm well aquainted with Mr. Capelles previous publications, but none of them even come close to this one. I think the knowledge that a Player gains in Straight Pool is vital to his/her overall growth & skill potential. This book gives more and better information than many Instructors provide. It's worth every penny!
straight pool bible.......2007-05-11
I have skimmed all of the book, have read parts of it carefully, and will continue to consult different chapters from time to time. I seldom play straight pool but practice it quite often. This book showed me some things I didn't know and pointed out some things I knew but hadn't paid enough attention to. It's detailed and thorough. I may not reach my lifetime goal of running 100 balls but this book will put at least a few balls on my occasional high run. It's a good book to read just before going out to hit balls.
Your Pool Reference.......2007-04-10
This reference guide for pool will show you every possible shot you may have to take. Your game will greatly improve with the tips in this book.

Customer Reviews:
Maverick is a misnomer.......2003-12-08
In fact, far from being a 'maverick' view of broadcasting (that presentation can only have been a misjudged marketing ploy) this book is the result of the author's ( a renowned Irish film maker) forty years experience as an insider and outsider in Irish film making and broadcasting circles. It articulates clearly and with insider knowledge the crisis of broadcasting brought on by the phenomenon of 'the market'.
An indication of its powerful insight into public broadcasting in Ireland is the fact that discussion on it has been effectively censored by the best-known personalities in the incestuous world of Irish Public television and radio. The reason? Many of them are shown in this book as having a vested interest in the trivialisation of broadcasting.
The author's insights ( based on a four- year tenure on RTE's governing body) into the political and economic attitudes of such as Garret Fitzgerald, ex- premier of Ireland, Des Geraghty, head of the most powerful Union in Ireland, two Director-Generals of RTE are quite unique. The self-serving culture of Irish public broadcasting and its total subservience to the pressures of commercial and political expedience, have rarely been so clearly and worryingly dissected.
This book could only have been written by an artist who is a maverick only in the sense that he has not yet submitted to 'branding'
