Impressionist Coloring Book For Kids Of Any Age.......2005-12-17
I am a fan of this series of books, and especially appreciate their utility in introducing great art to children and young adults. I am a great admirer of Vincent van Gogh, and have always appreciated his unique style and especially his brushwork. In my mind his use of dynamic brushstrokes and bright contrasting colors defines impressionism for all time. The problem, of course, is that these characteristics are impossible to reproduce in a coloring book or paint-by-numbers book of any sort.
While I prefer the abstract coloring books from the same series, I recognize that impressionism is more difficult to reproduce than the (generally) hard-lined linearity inherent in abstract art. While I considered giving this book four stars due to the impossibilities in reproducing a van Gogh masterpiece, I elected to give it five because of the educational and inspirational value that exposing people to these great works intrinsically has.
The book is well printed, and comes with a nice color guide for rendering the individual pieces. It is a bargain, and is a great, interactive way to introduce kids (or adults new to van Gogh, for that matter) to the work of the master impressionist.
Pretty good.......2005-08-18
This is a great coloring book for adults. I use it as a time to just do something a little mindless. Its a nice change to have a book like this that isn't a bunch of cartoons intended for 5 year olds.
Careful!.......2005-01-25
I think we can all agree that, although he depicted some perfectly pleasant scenes of quaint countryside and rural life, Van Gogh's approach to paint application and colour was way off. How many times did he spoil, say, a nice waving wheat scene with turmultuous swirling colours, giving a dark psychological insight into a tormented psyche, at odds with the scene depicted? He couldn't even paint a nice starry sky without expressing through colour, texture and dynamic motion a radical and unique vision of personal torment, at odds with the artistic conventions of the time. This book, then, is a godsend; a chance to rectify Van Gogh's stylistic mistakes in the area of colour application, while retaining the charming scenes of the French countryside.
A word of warning, however: this book is really not suitable for children or similarly impressionable people. I gave it to a young nephew who, after spending quite some time colouring in the nice birds over the wheat field, cut his ear off!
Good adult therapy.......2002-02-21
I was looking for a good "adult therapy" style coloring book, and this is exactly what I was hoping for. Since I can't draw, I satisfy my creative yearning with coloring. The pictures have a enough detail to be absorbing, but not so much detail as to be tedious. The paper and granularity of the drawings are perfect for crayons, which I prefer over markers or pencil. My husband still teases me for playing with crayons, but at least my subjects are adult now.
Color Your Own VAN GOGH Paintings.......2000-04-05
"Color Your Own VAN GOGH Paintings" is a great way to introduce children to a famous painter. As an elementary art teacher (grades K-6), I'm always looking for creative ways to introduce famous painters and techniques to students. This book will be a great asset to the Van Gogh study I introduce to the kindergarten class. We currently read "Camille and the Sunflowers", a book about Van Gogh, and then do a Van Gogh-like sunflower painting. This book will give them another look at Van Gogh's work... and THEY get to give his pictures life by coloring them in! There are 30 meticulously rendered black-and-white drawings of some of his masterpieces. (Also included are the 30 accompanying full-color illustrations depicted on the covers!)

Great Game - Buy It.......2006-12-26
We have had this game for a couple years and love it. My kids (7 yrs, 10 yrs, and 12 yrs) absolutely love to play it as much as I do. We make a pot of tea and have some great family game time. You play it just as you would play Go Fish. They are learning about great art and artists while having fun. What's better than that? A definite 5. One suggestion, though: the only thing that this game gives you over the Go Fish deck only is the book which tells about the art, which we rarely if ever look at. So you could certainly save money by just buying the Go Fish version which is just the deck but the exact same game.
A Great Homeschool Product!.......2005-08-18
Go Fish for Art is a fun way for your kids to learn artists and their works. You get a beautiful deck of cards and a mini booklet that includes brief biographies of the painters. Artist studied in this deck include Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, Seurat, Rousseau, and Toulouse-Lautrec. The game is easy to learn because everyone knows how to play "go fish." A memory game suggestion is also included. The cards are printed on high quality cardstock that is coated in plastic so the deck should hold up well for many years of use.
VAn Gogh & Friends: Art Game.......2005-07-29
Beautiful card game, BUT the best is the enclosed art book that tell about the style, color, texture, description, etc. at a level children can understand. Great book and cards for teaching adults and children about Impressionistic art. I will be using this set in my classroom.

"I urge you: learn how to look at 'bad' films, they are so often sublime." This remark by Ado Kyrou heads up the introduction to Immoral Tales, from which horror and exploitation film fans, especially Americans, can learn much indeed. Not so much a movie guide as an insightful critical overview of European sex/horror films (there is much overlap between the two genres), this book is elegantly organized into a sequence of essays proceeding from general themes (the history of horrific art, the surgical metaphor), to regional styles (Italian, German, French, Spanish), to individual directors (Jesus Franco, Jean Rollin, José Larraz, José Bénazéraf, Walerian Borowczyk, Alain Robbe-Grillet). The writing is intelligent, engaging, and packed with fascinating historical and technical details. The book includes plenty of photos and poster art (including many in color), a useful appendix covering miscellaneous actors and directors, an index, and a bibliography. Immoral Tales was a finalist for the 1995 Bram Stoker Award in Nonfiction.
Book Description
European cinema has always excelled when it comes to "bad" movies. When continental moviemakers combined horror with sex, they unleashed a tidal wave of celluloid strangeness that lasted nearly thirty years. From sexy thrillers to pulp surrealism, from decadent erotica to blood-soaked vampire epics, nothing could go too far. Immoral Tales tells the fascinating story of this unique period, peeking into the kaleidoscope of visceral horror, maverick directors, and erotic invention.

Invasion of the Eurotrash cinema babes!.......2007-08-11
Great overview of a genre much looked down upon by many "serious" cinephiles; the trashy, sexy, bloody sex-and-horror Euroflicks of the 1950's through the early 1980's. With the advent of DVD's, many of these classic (yes, I said "classic" and I mean it!) films can now be seen by the genre fan, especially if one happens to own a DVD player that can play Region 2 European-issue discs. The Euroexploitation movies of this period adumbrated the "slasher" flicks of 1970's and 1980's US cinema, and in many cases, IMHO, were better-assembled with sexier actresses and a more uninhibited approach toward the mixture of sex and horror. Lots of fine B&W pictures, but, I have to say, not a lot of color pictures (a 16-page insert). NOT a "safe for work" type of book (but then, neither are the movies reviewed herein!) Not for everyone, but recommended for fans of "trash" cinema, horror, and the beauties of classic Eurofilm.
Essential for Euro-horror and sleaze freaks!.......2005-09-07
An instant classic, Messers Tohill and Tombs (and with a name like that you've got to go into horror or undertaking) lead the reader into the bizarre realms of European horror and sleaze cinema with verve and style. The movies they describe aren't for everybody, and neither is 'Immoral Tales', but if you enjoy poetically choreographed gore, naked chicks with too much mascara, and sheer oddball exotica, this volume's your unholy bible. The book's as slick, garish, sleazy, playfully pretentious, and exquisitely tasteless as its subject is apt to be (though not nearly as cheap-looking!). It's easy to forget in the age of the DVD how alien and obscure much of this was when 'Immoral Tales' was first published a decade ago, and its authors deserve kudos as authentic pioneers, just as you owe yourself a copy of this book you sick little cine-phile!
This book is great for EuroTrash fans >:)~.......2003-04-01
I got this about a year ago and I still read it! It goes into some detail about the Horror scene from day one in Europe so to speak which I thought was very cool.. It also talks about the differance in Directors in Europe, which I thought ok but why talk about so of there most terrible movies instead of the great ones?
Excellent book, but maybe not enough of it........2002-03-10
Easily one of the most entertaining books I have read on the sex/horror movie subject(although most don't concentrate solely on sex/horror). The problem is that it's so well written that I ripped through it in no time at all. I suppose when you look at it it really isn't such a small book, it just felt like it. You can't really criticize something that makes you want keep reading, but I just wish there was more.
Tremendous.......2001-12-05
A well-researched but light hearted look at the often kitsch always entertaining horror/sexploitation flicks of the period. My husband (...) thoroughly enjoyed Tohill's nostalgic treatment and so did I.

The construction of shoji-Japanese sliding doors-requires intricate skills and attention to detail. This guide to creating shoji brings together both traditional insight and technical mastery of the craft from the perspective of an apprenticed sliding-door maker. Step-by-step instructions, illustrated with photos of each work in progress, give detailed information on how to construct both common shoji and Japanese transom (a piece found between rooms and above sliding doors). The correct use of Japanese tools is discussed, as are techniques for marking lines, making specific joints and handles, using rice glue, and applying shoji paper.
Customer Reviews:
Making Shoji .......2007-05-17
This is a very comprehensive guide to make japanese screens in the traditional style.I found it useful and you can figure out the western tools needed if you dont have the Japanese tools.
Art On Purpose.......2004-06-08
If you ever want to be deeply impressed with the human ingenuity take a look at this book. The lowly shoji door, is a commonplace in Japanese homes. Not just as doors, but as windows and room dividers. And each is a work of art, put together by craftspeople like Toshio Odata using the same tools they did a thousand years ago.
For the woodworker this book is a detailed study of the techniques and processes involved in creating an object that is simple in its concept and incredibly complex in it's potential. To the student of Japanese culture the book is a vivid tour of the philosophy and commitment that underlie many of the simple, traditional factors of their lives, from doors to teacups. An insight into some of their aesthetic underpinnings.
Homeowners in Japan would collect and age wood, especially for their houses. Then an itinerant craftsman would take up residence for the time needed, building both his workshop and then features expected of him. All the tools he used must be easily portable and capable of work both delicate and massive. For a true master, an intricate door would take a day, despite being made completely from scratch.
Odate combines instruction with anecdote, while the photographs and diagrams are easy to follow. Compared to the traditional way a Japanese learned carpentry (by 'peeking' at the master) this book is a gift for those who want to master the Japanese toolset. For someone like me, who is used to modern machinery and automation, the book is a lesson in humility as well.
Impressive, unique, "woodworker friendly" instruction guide........2000-06-06
Shoji is the word for Japanese sliding doors and screens made of wood. Their making requires a degree of skill and attention to detail previously thought to be beyond the reach of amateur woodworkers. Now master craftsman Toshio Odate provides an illustrated, step-by-step, compendium of practical instruction that will enable the novice to successfully create and assemble two shoji projects: the common sliding screen with hipboard, plus an intricate transom featuring the beautiful asanoha pattern. Building on this foundation, Odate gives construction details and nots on eight shoji variations. Technical chapters cover the Japanese mortise-and-tenon joint, shoji paper, and home-made rice glue. Making Shoji is an impressive, unique, highly recommended, "do-it-yourself" woodworker friendly instruction guide.
Book Description
Basic Connections provides basic information about expressions and usages that facilitate the flow of ideas and thoughts in written and spoken Japanese. It explains how words and phrases dovetail, how clauses pair up with other clauses, how sentences come together to create harmonious
paragraphs. Since this is a book about the basics it starts with the fundamentals, explaining first the two types of Japanese sentence-"A is B" and "A does B." Then it proceeds to the problem of the modifier and the modified-a matter of "which is which." Wa and ga naturally get considerable play;
after all, it is downright impossible to speak properly without them. There is also a discussion of linking nouns and noun phrases, not to speak of verbs and verb phrases. The book goes on to devote a whole chapter to common mistakes and troublesome usages. The final chapter attempts to pin down
some particularly slippery locutions: such as toshite, imada ni, sore kara, whoppers like "Sentence A-te sae inakereba, Sentence B," and many more.
Any beginning or intermediate student, having spent a certain amount of time and energy studying this book, will be able to speak and read Japanese in a much more coherent fashion.

anthing BUT basic.......2007-04-17
I bought this book in order to prepare myself to take the JLPT4 exam. And, well, I was in for a shock. The title is nothing if not misleading. The grammar covered DOES NOT focus on what you would expect to be basic material. Of the hundred odd "connections" that the author has chosen, only a handful are JLPT4, and the other half are split between JLPT3 and JLPT2. Other cons are that the language of the author is of a very wordy and academic nature, so the explanations seem more complex than clear or concise! And, contrary to the premise that much of this book is aimed at beginners, in the majority of cases the author clearly expects readers to already have a grasp of intermediate grammar, thus leaving far too many things improperly explained, skimmed over, or even lacking in any explanation at all.
However, this is not to say that this book is a waste of good paper. If you are of an intermediate-higher level (read: higher JLPT3 and above) it can come in quite useful, because it at least alerted me to a lot of aspects many other grammar books did not even touch on, even though it failed to explain many of these in detail. And if you're a beginner, consider it for future reference, but don't be in any hurry to buy it.
If you have a certain backround- it's a nice book.......2006-11-04
The field of language books and Japanese language in particular, is as enormous as can be. It's important to know where to start, and how to accumulate information in order to make a steady move forward while learning any language. This book, though trying to give you as much general information about the language as possible, is not for beginners. If you want some real basic Japanese, try any Kodansha book or any other college students book that will give you the right start. Although not for beginners as I said, it's a very handy book for the more experienced Japanese learner, and will give you bunds of information that'll make your language familiarity better. Again, a book not to start from, but a great supplementary didactic tool for the advanced user.
Clear and In-Depth!.......2005-11-13
This is a great book for beginning/intermediate Japanese students. It describes the usage of particles, select verb phrases, and common sentence patterns very thoroughly, especially where appropriate context is required. Instead of just saying "A kara, B" means "because of A, B", this book delves into the complexities of kara implying direct cause and effect, even blame.
As for the use of romanji, it's annoying and ill-suited to a book that is not for absolute beginners. However, in a way it's also better than furigana because it's easier to practice reading kanji. I find that I've developed the annoyingly lazy habit of just reading furigana even if I know the kanji.
All in all, a great supplemental text!!
I love this book.......2005-03-11
This is a very good book for beginners, but you still have to sit down and practice the basics with it... it's very good.
The most important grammar book you'll find?.......2004-05-31
This could be the most important Japanese grammar book you could buy, and I'll tell you why. If you're already learning Japanese, you know how complex the sentence structures and grammar can be. It's one thing to be able to get your ideas across in a reasonably intelligent manner, but it's another thing entirely to make what you're saying flow and sound natural. This book teaches you how to connect ideas and sentences so they more naturally flow into the next one. Now, if you're like me, you might be really good and saying things in Japanese, as long as you don't have to build on what you said the sentence before, or put together one long thought or sentence. This book shows you how to "look ahead" so you can figure out how to construct the sentence from the beginning so that, by the time you get to the end, everything has neatly connected itself along the way.
My only regret is I didn't find this book sooner than I did. It is truly invaluable for the beginning student, and even for the intermediate student, as well. Don't even hesitate to buy this book. It is cheap and EASILY worth the price.
