A great book about how to practise as a graphic designer.......2006-03-09
I love my mac, but I also love not using it. This book tells a lot about a designers prosess outside the mac. I found this sentence in the book: "Designers have a responsebility to do what they are paid to - design .... To many designers use the (mac) for a substitute for thinking". So right!
A real world book.......2004-07-09
Unlike design books filled w/ eye-candy & no direction on processes, Mark Oldach steers the reader through well defined concepts & thoughts. An excellent book for all designers who wish to communicate through design.
definatly not a picture book.......2003-12-12
I found this book to be very helpful in getting you to think of the box. Instead of being like a picture book with not much information, it tells you how to come up with ideas and explains the process of making a good design. This is a great book to have if you already have those picture books with just designs and need something to help you with actually creating your own designs.
The book of all books.......2003-02-26
I had been looking for a book about creativity, I wanted to understand the process more, and hopefully increase my productivity. This book was one of 12 that I bought related to the design and creativity area, and was by far the best I've read yet. It gives so much information about the process of idea generation that even I understand it more now (and I've been doing it for 4 years). I have already used the advice on handling clients to great success, and I'm reading the book a second time round.
This book is a MUST for all designers at all levels!!
Enjoy
great starting point for formalizing/mainstreaming process.......2000-07-14
A lot of time is wasted in the creative business just doodling and waiting for one's muse to pop in and show us the light. This book takes the sloppy creative process and pretty much streamlines it into a more productive method of thinking things out and solving problems.
While there are examples of real creative work, the book focuses more on process than one product. If you're constantly living on mental post-it notes and flying by the seat of your pants when coming up with new ideas, this book might just be the ticket for you to get the creative process more organized. I have seen a few reviews that cited a problem with the size of the font used in the book... I held the pages of the book up to my computer monitor and find that the font used on this webpage is actually smaller than that used in the book... so if you can read this page, you can read the book. :-)

lets not forget the artist!.......2005-02-27
I loved that Art that goes with this book. Mystical and subtle, they really take you to an other world altered state!
Margot is a professional artist , not a book illustrator, so her paintings do not fall into the trap of overexplaining the author. I believe she did them independently of the author.
The ideas and dream-scape art in this book are intriquing........1998-07-04
This book is about animals that come to us in dreams. Hillman encourages us not to turn them into "dream symbols" because in so doing we lose the animal. Instead we should recognize it as real, as choosing to come to us from the great unconscious. He suggests that we honor the animal for being present by asking it why it appeared in the dream. "What is the animal offering you by coming into your life in the dream?" Through exploration of this idea, Hillman feels we can regain our kinship with animals. He offers the exciting idea that animals are trying to communicate with us in order to stop their exploitation and extinction. The ideas offered in this book are of interest to anyone who appreciates and respects life in this time when many species are driven to the brink of survival. The artwork is hauntingly beautiful.

Excellent.......2007-05-27
This is not a how to book, but rather an exploration of the creative process. Well written, insightful and inspiring!
More of Carbonetti's gorgeous work--advice for creativity.......2001-11-21
This is not a painting how-to book. Making Pearls is Vermont artist Jeanne Carbonetti's attempt to verbalize her creative exercises she uses and teaches for her free style of watercolor.
If you are a fan of Carbonetti's paintings, there are many photos of her work in this book to drool and marvel over. There is one useful exercise--making a "creation cycle" using the seven colors based on the India Chakras. Her theory is that we are always within the cycle of creation and need to recognize where we are in the cycle to be in rhythm with the flow. If you can't take one of her workshops, using this book can lead you through the exercise.
Why "Making Pearls" as a title? This is a metaphor for taking irritations of daily life and making something beautiful from them, just as the oyster takes a grain of sand and creates a pearl.

Book Description
Bonnie Gillespie's new book, "Casting Qs: A Collection of Casting Director Interviews," is a compliation of over 120 interviews with casting directors in Los Angeles and New York, all of which originally appeared in her weekly column, "Casting Qs," in "Back Stage West," the actors trade weekly.
Casting directors are the gatekeepers to every producer, director, and filmmaker in the entertainment industry. Their ability to size up and actor's fit to a role is what makes them the ones that filter the thousands of potential actors into the handful the decision-makers will see audition for one role. Actors must have an understanding of this process!
Certain actors have an edge over their competition. Part of that edge comes from being keenly aware of what casting directors are looking for. That awareness--and an actor's edge--starts here.
Other casting director guides on the market are not as comprehensive or as business-minded as "Casting Qs: A Collection of Casting Director Interviews." Bonnie Gillespie's experience as a former actor allows her to ask questions on behalf of working actors everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Must read book for parents of child actors!.......2007-01-09
This book is jam packed with great information! As the parent of child actors, I wanted to get the scoop on what casting directors are thinking. On auditions, parents wait in the reception area while their kids meet with casting directors in a separate area. Most of the time, the parents do not meet the casting director at all. So I never really get to see how the process works.
By reading "Casting Qs", I got all of my questions answered, without having to nag my kids for info! The best part is that even after reading the book from cover to cover, I can go back use the book as a reference if my kids have a meeting with one of the CDs interviewed. I think that this book is a MUST READ for any parent of a child actor, seasoned, or just starting out. I wish that I had read it even sooner!
This book is far more than "Casting Q's"--It really should be called "Auditioning Answers".......2006-02-17
The most fascinating book on auditioning that I've ever read. Nearly 100 casting directors share their thoughts on what they like, hate, and everything else that falls inbetween. The most incredible aspect of it all is how often the casting directors say the same things.
I learned things in this book I wouldn't (and couldn't) have possibly learned without it.
Simply a great book!.......2005-11-09
With all the research that has been done for me in this book I've been saved a lifetime. I've just started utilizing some of the words of wisdom gathered and have a new perspective and energy on the industry because of it.
This Book Helps You Take Control of Your Career.......2005-11-04
Bonnie Gillespie's book "Casting Qs" is a totally invaluable resource if you're an actor in LA. Every actor needs a leg up and every casting director is different - how great to have a resource that allows you to differentiate yourself while appealing to the Casting Director's own sensibilities! I go to this book every time I read for a new casting director, and also for ideas on how to gain access to casting directors I don't know yet. It's not what you know, it's who you know - so why not learn how to know the people you need to know? This book helps you do that. One casting director says flat out to send in your headshot with Casting Qs on the outside of the envelope, he'll know you know a little bit about him and he'll take a look at you. I took him up on the offer, and he's serious! But you'll have to buy the book to find out who.
The most important book to have on hand!.......2004-09-12
Bonnie Gillespie's "Casting Qs: A Collection of Casting Director Interviews" is the most important book to have on hand if you are an aspiring actor in the entertainment industry. This book has been referred to numerously by myself and my daughter, a child actor. Bonnie's format is non evasive yet to the point - a perfect blend of insight for a new person to this business or a seasoned professional. This book should be in the hands of everyone with a true passion for "making it". Each Casting Director that is featured offers an enormous amount of hits and misses to their daily grind. Anyone wishing to embark on this business would be a fool to ignore the straightforward words from these top casting directors....I give it two thumbs up...but if you ask our whole family (immediate and who have read it) WE give it 10 thumbs up!!!

King of Jazz Criticism.......2005-01-15
What I love about Morgenstern is that not only is he the greatest critic since John Hammond, but he never interjects himself or his emotion into his writing. While sometimes dry, this is the greatest collection of essays, reviews, liner notes, etc. A must for any fan of jazz or jazz scholor.
Finally, a collection by one of our most respected critics.......2005-01-09
I have been waiting a long time for this book, speaking as someone who has often bought reissues of records I already owned, just to have Dan's liner notes.
From his days at Down Beat to the present, he has maintained the highest standards of critical integrity, tempered with kindness. Unlike many "critics" he is not a slash and burn operator, seeking to trash some performers to enhance the reputation of others, or praising one school of jazz to denigrate another.
He has his favorites, of course. The book is heavily weighted toward more mainstream performers, which is fine with me.
In particular, his appreciation and love for Louis Armstrong comes through in the 81 pages devoted to his live performances and recordings, as well as critical reviews of two biographies. There are insights into his true character, some of which will be surprising to readers who know only his show business face.
Jumping forward a few generations, he says this in a 1958 review of Ornette Coleman "...whatever may happen, this music is not the jazz of the future but a sincere and somewhat raw attempt to chart new tributaries." Do you see what I mean about "kindness?"
So, from Bessie Smith and Louis to Ornette and Bill Evans, there is a lot to savor in this collection, one any jazz fan will enjoy.
Otherwise, 5 stars. Bravo to Morgenstern and his editor, Sheldon Meyer.

Book Description
Shooting the Family, a collection of essays on the contemporary media landscape, explores ever-changing representations of family life on a global scale. The contributors argue that new recording technologies allows families an unusual kind of freedom—until now unknown—to define and respond to their own lives and memories. Recently released videos made by young émigrés as they discover new homelands and resolve conflicts with their parents, for example, reverberate alongside the dark portrayals of family life in the formal filmmaking of Ang Lee. This book will be a boon to scholars of film theory and media studies, as well as to anyone interested in the construction of the family in a postmodern world.

Family science filmaking.......2007-07-05
Shooting the family: Transnational media and intercultural values.
Edited by Patricia Pisters and Wim Staat.
As the roles of families shift due to globalization and migration, the authors of
Shooting the Family: Transnational media and intercultural values, try to present some of these changes and the good and the bad from media exposure. A group of twelve media scholars wrote the book that originated in the Department of Media and Culture of the University of Amsterdam. The authors try to explain some of the shifts in the perceptions of the nuclear and extended family by adding to the complexity of the subject of the influence of media on families using an intercultural perspective. The family is addressed from a humanities viewpoint, focusing on philosophy and esthetics examining identity, ethics, and traditions. The family is viewed using media texts including fiction films, documentaries, photos, television series, and home videos. This is not a study of traditional family relationships pointing out cultural diversity as presented by Bron Ingoldsby and Suzanne Smith from their research. Nor does it try to shatter the myths of family life, as did Stephanie Coontz, in The Way We Never Were. The editors, Pisters and Staat, speak to the issues that the studies of the family in film and television in the past have been Freudian in nature, of the Oedipal family, which was an important paradigm in interpreting the world of cinema.
An excellent source for filmakers interested in family science.
