Book Description
Making art, says Peter London, is a perfect vehicle for recovering our lost sense of unity with Nature. When we draw closer to Nature through art, we simultaneously draw closer to our Selves, and thereby enjoy a richer, more authentic creativity and a deeper, fuller life. Through exercises, theoretical reflections, poetic meditations, and stories, London presents an innovative approach to creativity that engages body, mind, and spirit. A series of guided "Encounters"—some to be done outdoors, some indoors in the presence of some natural objects, and some entirely in the imagination—invites the reader to investigate Nature's secrets and then to celebrate through making a work of art. Topics and exercises include: the essentials of creative practice, such as time, space, media, and intention; cultivating a simple, firsthand way of seeing Nature in all its subtlety, mystery, and intimacy; creating a personal sanctuary in which to communicate directly with Nature; conducting a sacred conversation with archetypal forms of Nature encountered in the imagination; seeking forgiveness from Nature, with the intention of healing our broken primal relationship with the natural world and rediscovering our rightful place in it.

Book Description
In this clever, humorous book, Robert Short reveals what man's best friend can teach us about life. From humility and obedience to singleness of purpose, The Gospel According to Dogs highlights the remarkable qualities that dogs possess and that we can all aspire to. The author of The Parables of Peanuts and the bestselling The Gospel According to Peanuts, Short again uses our favorite comic strips to illustrate his lessons. Featuring over forty comic strips, Snoopy, Marmaduke, Grimm (from Mother Goose & Grimm) and more all appear in these pages, as well as photographs of real dogs. This is a real treat for the millions of dog lovers out there ready to learn how their best friend can teach them a thing or two about being human. It is also a surprisingly insightful book for people looking to find inspiration in unlikely places. The Gospel According to Dogs will amuse and inspire.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2007-05-12
It's been many years since I first picked up this book. I love the way Robert L. Short juxtaposes Christian values with scenes from life in the world according to Peanuts. I always saw the little Peanut strips with Lucy, Linus, Charlie, Snoopy and the others as parables, really, rich with life lessons and deeper meaning. I was so glad to see that someone else saw that, too, and wrote a book, writing in detail, where this symbolism was found, and how it could be connected to the teachings of the Bible.
Though, I am not Christian, I believe that the messages about sin, life, love, envy and the other streams of emotions that these little characters, wise beyond their years, go through, as children, together, really speak volumes about the struggle of humankind. Every character is rich with symbolism about the plight of humankind, and, even Snoopy the Dog struggles with the same level of self doubt, anger, resentment and discouragement that his human counterparts must endure as part of the universal struggle. Great book!!! It has definitely stood the test of time. I highly reccomend it.
Great for you and the kids.......2005-03-06
Seriously. this is so much fun to read with the kids on a lazy day. Like the message of course.
A convincing argument for the use of modern-day parables.......2004-05-01
The Gospel According to Peanuts is a truly fascinating little book filled with insight, wisdom, and the type of joy that Christians should naturally espouse. Robert L. Short certainly does not argue that every single Peanuts cartoon carries a theological message, but he offers up an amazing selection of comic strips that do in fact encapsulate a number of important Christian beliefs. He begins the book with a justification for Christians embracing the arts as a means of spreading the Gospel to those around them. The fact that Charles Schulz himself was a Christian is, in a sense, immaterial; as Short argues, Christians should embrace all manner of things which will allow them to connect with others in a subtle and less holier-than-thou manner. You can't go around beating people over the head with God and get results, no matter how good your intentions. Engage them in the arts or some other object of mutual interest, and you open up innumerable outlets for Christian witnessing. For those who would scoff at the notion of linking Christianity with comedy, Short reminds us that, to the world, Christianity is itself rather comical. It is a wonderful argument that offers up much food for thought.
In the same vein as the parables of Jesus, Short makes use of dozens of Peanuts comic strips to shed light on a clear and understandable theology, finding many illustrative parallels in the lives of the Peanuts gang. Charlie Brown, in a very real sense, represents Everyman, a jolly good fellow who is always looking for something to improve a life that is, by and large, rather miserable - he never wins, just as mankind, on its own, never wins. Charlie Brown is also prone to moments of great anxiety, a fear of nothingness and emptiness. Short's most memorable comparisons, though, are to be found in the other central characters of Peanuts. Lucy's psychiatric business represents the rather modern fad of humans looking toward psychiatry to solve their problems and to reveal to them why they are so unhappy. Then there is Linus, who tends to try to run away from his problems and finds comfort only in his blanket. In Short's hands, the Great Pumpkin becomes a symbol of popular religious sentiment - Linus says, at one point, that it doesn't really matter what you believe as long as you are sincere. Of course, the Great Pumpkin never appears. Even more interesting is Linus' attitude toward Santa Claus, for, in Short's analysis, it represents the attitude of many professed Christians toward God. As Linus expects to be rewarded by Santa for his good behavior, some Christians seem to believe that by obeying God's commandments and doing good works, God owes them a reward. You can't pretend to be good and get to heaven, Short reminds us. Eternal life is a gift from God that no man can possibly earn on his own merits.
Short also expounds upon the dual nature of God's love, illustrating his argument with comic strips featuring, for example, the positive and negative qualities of rain. He concludes by offering a brilliant analysis of the words uttered so often by Charlie Brown: "Goof grief." Because you must become lost before you can be found and seek before you can find, grief can ultimately be a good thing, thanks solely to the death and resurrection of Jesus.
I was amazed at the insights into Christianity this book delivered. Non-Christians, even the Peanuts fans amongst them, may not enjoy this book because of its tenaciously theological design and purpose, but the truths that can be found in the comic strips of Charles Schulz can very effectively serve as the individual's exposure to and understanding of Christian faith. This is a remarkable book, and its importance goes far beyond its pages. Short shows how modern art and entertainment can help redefine and improve the effectiveness of the church in spreading the message of the Gospel to all men, women, and children.
first and best.......2001-06-06
This is the first book of theology that I ever read - and what a great introduction to theology! Short pulls out the theology of love and grace, the very human-ness of Christian faith (rightly understood), from the cartoon Peanuts, written by the unique Charles Schultz. This is actually the best introduction to real Christian theology that is available. Tillich, Kierkegaard, Niebuhr, Luther, Kafka, T. S. Eliot, and Karl Barth are only of the people you'll encounter in this splendid summary of essential Christian thought. I have valued this book for years, from when I first read it in high school to when I gave it as a gift to a lay minister in the diocese that I serve when I was consecrated as a bishop. Of all the dull and boring books of theology out there, this one is fun, and one of the best ever!
Good Book. Great Message. Bad Title.......2000-09-09
I found this book in a church Library and fell in love with it. the more I read the more I realize Short's Excelent perception on human nature and Christianity. I was especially fond of the titles of the chapters including: "The Wages of Sin is "Aaaughh"", and "Good Grief". These Titles and the titles of the book however are going to be offencive to some Fundimentalist Christians. That is a shame because if they read this book they would see how good of an evangelical tool it could be. I hope anyone struggling with their own faith could read this book. It really Pokes fun at human nature.

TURN THE OTHER MUZZLE.......2000-11-14
This book is subtitled "The Theology in Peanuts," and is made up of cartoons taken from "Peanuts" strips spanning the twenty-five years from 1958 to 1983. Philosophically and theologically, they give the reader a lot to think about, albeit thoughts flavored with Schultz's brand of humor.
Schultz gives us an example of unshakeable faith in Linus and his belief that "The Great Pumpkin" will rise up from the most sincere pumpkin patch on Halloween Eve, bearing presents for all the good boys and girls. Linus always rationalizes away "The Great Pumpkin's" non appearances, and the next Halloween finds him back in his pumplin patch, ready and waiting, one more time.
Sally Brown represents the commercial aspect of Christmas in a strip where, after Linus expounds on the true meaning of Christmas, she responds with, "If I don't get everything I want for Christmas this year, I'm gonna gross out."
Then there's Snoopy, the canine philosopher. When asked by Linus if he (Snoopy) is bothered by the fact that the Bible doesn't speak very well of dogs, Snoopy replies, in a thought balloon, that, yes, it bothers him but "I just turn the other muzzle."
And, of course, there's always Good Old Trusting Charlie Brown. In another strip where Lucy tricks Charlie Brown into attempting to kick the football one more time, she lures him by reciting the entire "To everything there is a season." Just as she pulls the ball away, and, as usual, Charlie Brown ends up flat on his back, she adds a new ending, "And a time to pull away the football."
These are but a few examples of Schultz's gentle humor turned toward philosophy and theology and how they affect the "Peanuts" gang.
Excellent Book -- I wish they'd reprint it.......2000-04-23
In the time since the printing of "Beagles and Bunnies" I have had two copies and I loved the book. However, I wanted to be able to share the experience and so I gave them away. The first went to a preacher in Yosemite who often quoted the strip and the second went a pastor here who also often quoted it. I don't regret giving them away... I just wish I had a copy now that Sparky is gone...
The Real Stuff.......2000-04-04
There have been a number of books discussing how Peanuts comic strips deal with biblical, moral, and theological topics, but this book gets down to the nitty gritty: it lets the strips speak for themselves. It has 125 strips from different periods of the run of Peanuts, and there's good stuff throughout.
A Great Collection Of Strips With Religious Themes.......1999-09-19
Peanuts was one of the first strips to bring religion into the comics mainstream and this is a collection of the more successful strips. The usual Peanuts style of bittersweet humor. Highly recommended.
Charles Schultz turns another blind eye.......1999-01-27
While this book certainly uses an interestingly stark, post-modernist style to capture the subtle ennui of the miserable proletariat world of one Charles Brown, Charles Schultz once again focuses on the 'comic' aspects of cartooning, rather than the myriad problems which affect me personally. Once again he ignores the fact that people like me are forced to eat leftovers, have been reduced to welfare collection (though we do maintain excellent computer systems). . .and don't get me started on his lack of gay characters. I've purchased some of his other books, and if I don't see any improvement, I'll be forced to draw the conclusion that he is pro-bald and pro-yellow shirt and anti-everything else.

Book Description
Garbo and Crawford. Ava, Hedy, Judy, Liz epitomized Hollywood's golden era. With a trembling lip or sultry eye, with a tear or song or husky whisper, these women held moviegoers across America in their sway from the hard times of the 1930s through the booming postwar years to the early sixties. They were royalty and box office, and led pampered public lives-furs, jewels, designer gowns; limousines, flash bulbs, handsome escorts-that captured the national imagination. They also signed seven-year contracts with a morals clause, and the more they slipped, the more the secret abortions, efficient cover-ups, legal legerdemain, and dropped charges bound them to the wizard in their Oz, Louis B. Mayer. The slips are here along with the successes. Here, too, are the Blonde Bombshell Jean Harlow, Million-Dollar Mermaid Esther Williams, Sweater Girl Lana Turner, and bad girl Ava Gardner ("She can't act. She can't talk. She's terrific," declared Mayer after her screen test). From Jeanette MacDonald and Norma Shearer to Princess Grace and Dame Elizabeth Taylor, the sixteen portraits in this lively, photograph-filled volume, each accompanied by the star's filmography, tell the tales that have long lay hidden behind the gossip and the glories of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's glamorous golden girls.
Customer Reviews:
pure speculation.......2007-06-09
i have read the book and i keep wondering if any of this really true. it is just pure specualtion. idle gossip. but it was fun reading it. why was so much attention given to grace kelly when she only made a couple pictures with MGM. katharine hepburn was a much bigger star and the author gave her a couple of pages. just not enough.
Not Worthy for the Collector.......2007-01-13
Miss Wayne clearly did not investigate the rumors that fills this book. Many of her facts are not validated and that many more are known to be just rumor. The typographical errors abound, i.e. Wiltshire Boulevard in Los Angeles - it is Wilshire Boulevard. Her dates are deplorable - i.e. Esther Williams and Fernando Lamas were married for 22 years from 1969 until his death in 1982 - that's 13 years, Miss Wayne!
As an avid collector of classic movies and the literature of the Golden Age of Hollywood, this book has no value to this or any other collector!
this is not what it purports to be.......2005-10-25
Jane Ellen Wayne's book "The Golden Girls of M-G-M" will not be everyone's cup of tea. The author seems to take serious advantage of the fact that most of these women are no longer around to protect their reputations, and thus this book is full of vulgar details more at home in the National Enquirer than a deceptively-stylish biography tribute book (which this purports to be). Though to be fair, Ms Wayne is somewhat sympathetic to each of the ladies she features here, but the book is riddled with typographical errors, misspelled names and wrong information. This book will probably never help Miss Wayne ascend the upper-echelon of biographers.
Covering as much dirt as possible, each actress gets a chapter (Jeanette MacDonald, Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor). There is also a `Naughty-But-Nice' section in the back, comprising of mini-chapters devoted to Hedy Lamarr, Katharine Hepburn, Esther Williams, Debbie Reynolds and June Allyson.
There are so many wonderful biographies available on these ladies, but I'm afraid this isn't one of them.
Dragged Through the Mud? Some jumped in on their own!.......2005-08-06
While we all know that these celebrity histories relate many falacies, some shocking tid-bits are true. For instance, it has been well known that Mickey Rooney, as baby-faced and non-sexual as he may seem, was quite the ladies' man. As a 16 year old he had an affair with a much older Norma Shearer (quickly broken up by Louis B. Mayer to avoid scandal). As for Hedy Lamarr, read about the admitted bi-sexuality and orgies in her own words... "Ecstacy and Me," her autobiography, does not hide that she acutally is an arrogant nymphomaniac, and she seems to be rather quite proud of it! We all agree that there are false rumors that are attributed to these actors and actresses, but let's not forget that a lot of them brought sensationalism and scandal on their own. That is what makes their stories so fascinating, and that is why we read them.
Another Wonderful Book From Jane Ellen Wayne.......2005-07-10
I always have a great time reading Jane Ellen Wayne's books. Once I started reading this one I could not put it down. Every chapter is filled with terrific stories about Hollywood's greatest actresses. You will learn all about Jeanette MacDonald's love affair with Nelson Eddy and Norma Shearer's marriage to Irving Thalberg. None of the ladies are portrayed as saints but if you can handle the truth you won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful, practical advice for the beginner.......2005-03-10
I like this book of card tricks for the fact that it is user-friendly and practical-minded.
After a brief introduction, Longe guides the reader through a series of card-manipulating exercises that have applications in hundreds of card tricks. He then lays out a series of card tricks, rated for their difficulty level, and complete with advice on what kind of audience might be best suited for any particular trick. The illustrations are simple and clear, and the tricks range from the basic to the extremely clever and inventive.
There's nothing new under this sun, but a beginner will find this guide much better than average when seeking to learn the basic skills necessary to amaze their friends and strangers.
The title is BS!.......2002-05-03
I have been doing card tricks for a while, and I have to say that anything of Bob Longe's is a waste of money.
The tricks in this book are terrible. These are certainly NOT the "World's Best Card Tricks". I can't believe some of this [stuff] is even in here.
I highly recommend the reader to learn card magic from great authors such as Jean Hugard, S.W. Erdnase, and Arthur H. Buckley.
If you are a beginner, get the "Royal Road to Card Magic" By Hugard and Braue. It is of MUCH higher value and the tricks in this book will be 100x better than the stuff that's in Bob Longe's books. There is absolutely no way you can be the life of the party with these tricks, as the author claims.
Fabulous for the beginning Magician!.......2001-12-03
I'm a magician member of the Magic Castle now, but in my early forays into card magic this book helped wean me away from trick Svengali and stripper decks, so that I could be handed a deck of cards from anyone and perform a nice trick. They're not all home runs. But I still get great responses from several of the tricks contained within here.
...and yes, I now own Card College, have read Royal Road to Card Magic several times, but those books should come after this one. This one will help you decide if you're serious about persuing more card magic or not.
A fabulous starter book, but make sure you practice!!
For those who are REALLY starting into card magic........1999-11-23
If you never read "Royal Road To Card Magic", "Expert Card Technique" or "Expert At The Card Table", you'll find this book a good one. It has some good tricks, but it has some dumb ones too. I recommend this book for those who does not want to learn some sleight of hand before starting doing card tricks. As Amazon warns, this book is juvenile literature. Last word: if you buy this book and you like it, then buy "101 Amazing Card Tricks". It's written by Bob Longe too, and in my opinion, they should be sold together, for their similarity.
THE BEST book I could find on card tricks........1999-09-16
No doubt that this is the greatest book on card magic. No sleight of hand is required and all you require is a deck of 52 cards, preferably the Bicycle brand Bridge sized cards which are easy to handle. Therefore the tricks are easy to learn.
I am not a professional magician, no way close to being even an amateur and yet I could amaze and dazzle my family members and friends. I am just a beginner to this world and now I am genuinely interested in magic in general and card magic in particular. Thanks, Bob for this great book. I am sure I will check out his other books as well.

Not Bad for the beginner, but not too good either.......2001-09-13
This book is fair for the beginner; it does teach some easy sleights and vanishes. For those who may be starting out in magic but are fairly serious about it, Modern Coin Magic is a much better value.
purely magical.......2000-09-01
Great tricks, easy to understand. It's a great book to flip through. At parties and around kids, I have shown off these tricks, andthey are very impressive. The book is well worth your money.
