Book Description
The fifties was the unforgettable decade in which movies exploded on the screen, more colorful, sexier, and wilder than ever before. Faced with the new challenge of television, the studios conjured up a host of irresistible attractions: Cinemascope, Vista-Vision, and 3D; the sexy Marilyn Monroe and voluptuous Jayne Mansfield; the moody figures of Paul Newman and James Dean; and the emergence of the sci-fi and horror genres.Customer Reviews:
So Good You Can Hang the Book on the Wall.......2003-08-26
The 50's decade has films by Bogart, Cary Grant, James Dean and Grace Kelly. Alfred Hitchcock made some gems as well. You'll find them all here along with your 50's movies like I Married a Monster From Outer Space, Attack of the 50ft Woman, Creature From the Black Lagoon and The War of the World's.
I wasn't even alive back then but I recognise most of these movies. They're classics. This is a sensational book to own.
Well-Chosen Poster Selection Marred by Layout and Brevity.......2001-02-05
This book is the third in a series that also covers the 60s and 70s in earlier versions.
This volume could have been entitled "The Movies Strike Back at Television." The posters emphasize new technologies (like 3-D glasses), lurid promises for the dying "B" pictures, and lush designs to help attract people away from their TV trays. Attractive new stars like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean helped.
Photographic reproduction in these posters is uniformly grim, so those posters which only feature drawings are the best. The most abstract ones appear in European and Japanese versions, and are usually the most outstanding.
A movie poster can help set the mood for the movie experience, and enhance the emotional impact much like music does on the film track. In some cases, these posters seemed to go beyond the movie itself. The poster for War of the Worlds seemed clearly more forbidding and overwhelming than anything I remember from the movie itself.
You will also enjoy recollecting your memories of these movies from looking at the posters.
What was most impressive to me was the way that a poster used a gesture, a moment in a scene, a character, or a design to capture the essence of the whole motion picture. This is the ultimate test of the old saw, "a picture is worth a thousand words." In this case, the best posters are worth many tens of thousands of words, and speak more eloquently than any words could.
Here are some of my favorites: La Dolce Vita; Sunset Boulevard (Polish version); The Bad and the Beautiful (Italian version); A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Japanese version); Vertigo; The Man with the Golden Arm; Anatomy of a Murder; Attack of the 50 Foot Woman; The War of the Worlds; The Ladykillers; The Man in the White Suit; Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (French version)(2); Mon Oncle (French version); Moulin Rouge (Polish version); French Can-Can (French version); Casque D'Or (French version); Lust for Life (British version); Kanal (Polish version); The Steel Helmet; The Dam Busters (British version); Reach for the Sky (British version); The Bridge on the River Kwai (British version); From Here to Eternity (French version); Bio Bravo; High Noon; Carmen Jones (Italian version); Gigi; Jailhouse Rock; and On the Waterfront (Italian version).
We are indeed fortunate that Mr. Nourmand has shared his taste and collection with us in this volume.
After you have finished enjoying these images, I suggest that you take a look at the logo for the organization, project, or company you work for. How well does it establish what you are trying to accomplish? You can use these posters as a guide to what is possible.
Be sure to make your visions vividly available to all!

Walter Wick's fun photos and Jean Marzollo's tricky riddles have returned in this I Spy "best of," a compilation of some of the duo's most entertaining "Where's Waldo?"-style visual scavenger hunts.Kids and grownups should be amply entertained digging up hidden treasure from a dozen different two-page tableaus, like "Baking Cookies": "I spy a boot, five arrows, blue hair,/A deer, four flames, a little green bear;/Five white beards, two three-string guitars,/Six raisin eyes, and three treetop stars." Wick's detail-rich photographs span from the realistic--like The Rainbow Express (an excitingly in-progress train diorama) and Arts & Crafts (a craft table crowded with thumbtacks, pipe cleaners, and the like)--to the more surreal, like Inventor's Workshop, a confabulation of live electrodes and steaming test tubes.
Ultimate Challenger makes a fine introduction to the 20-plus-volume I Spy series (Treasure Hunt, School Days, and Marzollo gladly adds value here with two pages of brand-new additional riddles. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

Mayberry, My Home Town: The Ultimate Guidebook to America's Favorite TV Small Town
Stephen J. Spignesi Manufacturer: Popular Culture Ink ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1560750235 |
Customer Reviews:
Definately Worthwhile - A Must-Have Book for Mayberry Lovers.......2003-02-24
Contents include: How to Get to Mayberry; Floorplans of 10 of the Main Rooms and Buildings in Mayberry; complete verses to theme song "The Fishin' Hole"; an alphabetic Encyclopedia of All Things Mayberry; a chapter on the movie "Return to Mayberry"; 1980's interviews with Jim "Gomer Pyle" Nabors, Aneta "Helen Crump" Corsaut, Betty "Thelma Lou" Lynn, Elinor "Ellie Walker" Donahue, Rance Howard (real-life father of Clint & Ron Howard), Clint "Leon"(the little PB&J cowboy)Howard, and Ron "Opie Taylor" Howard.
Scattered throughout the book are over 57 photographs, most full 8x11 page in the familiar glossy black & white that was the hallmark of the early years of the show. Most are production stills, promotional portraits, and some candid shots. Many of the photos are from the private collections of the actors.
There is also a short fun section especially for fans rating the Top Ten favorite episodes, plus over 225 trivia questions with answers suplied later in the book. This section includes an interview with the then-president of the largest fan club (over 12,000 members at that time) and a samples of several fanclub newsletters. (One of these at least currently has a great online website which I have visited!)
Finally there is a special index (to the encyclopedia listings)that are grouped by topic to help make use of the encyclopedia section more rewarding. Topic headings include "Animals of Mayberry", things relating to "Ernest T. Bass", another called "Kin and Family Connections in Mayberry", and "Mayberry in Song Including all Musical Matters".
We especially appreciated the color cover on the hardback edition: an 8x10 photographic reproduction of a cross-stitch pattern showing a main design of Opie's birds (Winkin, Blinkin & Nod) on their tree branch, with a border of the names of eighteen main characters of Mayberry surrounding the title of the book. This is a frame-able book cover!
Our one "complaint" was that the author's love of Mayberry is sometimes "too evident" however, that small "flaw" is easily and indulgently overlooked by those of us that feel the same way.
Not worth it!.......1999-05-21
