Book Description

With more than 2400 marks illustrated and brief histories and cross-references of more than 1600 manufacturers, this is the most comprehensive reference source on the subject. To compile the information presented here, the authors devoted much time over several decades researching numerous sources. These include various editions of Trademarks of the Jewelry & Kindred Trades, U.S. Patent Office records, silver and jewelry catalogs of manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, records of companies still in business, and pieces examined in antiques shops all over the country. This fourth edition includes many new trademarks, many additional companies, and brings up to date the many changes in company ownership during the last decade. , over 2200 marks, 6" x 9"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Silver information.......2007-01-12

This is a "must have" for anyone who collects, sells or loves sterling silver.

5 out of 5 stars silver collecting American antique.......2007-01-04

this is the book to have if you are an antique silver collector. Wonderful addition to my silver library

5 out of 5 stars 5TH EDITION.......2006-11-04

This is the 5th edition of one of the most inclusive and readable books on American silvermakers. A lot of encyclopedic silver books are mostly concerned with 18th or early 19th makers, this book includes 19th and 20th century makers with their marks and information about each one. My 2nd edition is worn and I'm delighted to have this new one.

5 out of 5 stars Really good on the details!.......2003-08-17

I have found this to be of immediate value in figuring out who made what. No, it doesn't have all the answers, but covers most things pretty well, and certainly better than any other reference I have. A must for any serious collector or dealer of American silver.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference for collectors or dealers..........2001-02-22

This reference would be a wonderful addition to any silver collector's library. It contains over 2400 marks, along with information about over 1600 manufacturers of American silver. Unlike some other books (Kovel's wonderful guide comes to mind), it goes into a bit more depth, with histories of and information about the makers themselves, rather than just the marks. There are lots of black and white photos, showing some of the marks themselves as well as samples of the works on which they appear. All in all an excellent reference for either the collector or the dealer of American silver, and worth the wait to order.

The fifties was the unforgettable decade in which movies exploded on the screen, more colorful, sexier, and wilder than ever before. Faced with the new challenge of television, the studios conjured up a host of irresistible attractions: Cinemascope, Vista-Vision, and 3D; the sexy Marilyn Monroe and voluptuous Jayne Mansfield; the moody figures of Paul Newman and James Dean; and the emergence of the sci-fi and horror genres.

With more than 250 full-color posters from all over the world, Film Posters of the 50s is a must-have for all film buffs as well as anyone interested in graphic design and advertising.

Like the other decade books in this series Film Posters of the 50's is a sensational buy. You could either keep it intact as a collection of posters in a book to show and discuss with friends, or cut the book up and actually have a vast number of posters up on your wall. This book is about a third the size of your standard film poster and most movies are full page colour. Any of them would look great up on the wall. Don't know what the previous reviewer is complaining about, must have confused this book with a similar title or something because this ain't like he describes.

The 50's decade has films by Bogart, Cary Grant, James Dean and Grace Kelly. Alfred Hitchcock made some gems as well. You'll find them all here along with your 50's movies like I Married a Monster From Outer Space, Attack of the 50ft Woman, Creature From the Black Lagoon and The War of the World's.

I wasn't even alive back then but I recognise most of these movies. They're classics. This is a sensational book to own.

4 out of 5 stars Well-Chosen Poster Selection Marred by Layout and Brevity.......2001-02-05

If I were only measuring this book by the 250+ images of movie posters in it, I would say it deserved more than five stars. Unfortunately, the layout has two flaws. Many of the images are reproduced in unnecessarily too small sizes. Some of the two page spreads have the key point of interest right in the middle of the crease. The book also would benefit from a much more thorough discussion of the techniques used in the posters.

This book is the third in a series that also covers the 60s and 70s in earlier versions.

This volume could have been entitled "The Movies Strike Back at Television." The posters emphasize new technologies (like 3-D glasses), lurid promises for the dying "B" pictures, and lush designs to help attract people away from their TV trays. Attractive new stars like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean helped.

Photographic reproduction in these posters is uniformly grim, so those posters which only feature drawings are the best. The most abstract ones appear in European and Japanese versions, and are usually the most outstanding.

A movie poster can help set the mood for the movie experience, and enhance the emotional impact much like music does on the film track. In some cases, these posters seemed to go beyond the movie itself. The poster for War of the Worlds seemed clearly more forbidding and overwhelming than anything I remember from the movie itself.

You will also enjoy recollecting your memories of these movies from looking at the posters.

What was most impressive to me was the way that a poster used a gesture, a moment in a scene, a character, or a design to capture the essence of the whole motion picture. This is the ultimate test of the old saw, "a picture is worth a thousand words." In this case, the best posters are worth many tens of thousands of words, and speak more eloquently than any words could.

Here are some of my favorites: La Dolce Vita; Sunset Boulevard (Polish version); The Bad and the Beautiful (Italian version); A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Japanese version); Vertigo; The Man with the Golden Arm; Anatomy of a Murder; Attack of the 50 Foot Woman; The War of the Worlds; The Ladykillers; The Man in the White Suit; Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (French version)(2); Mon Oncle (French version); Moulin Rouge (Polish version); French Can-Can (French version); Casque D'Or (French version); Lust for Life (British version); Kanal (Polish version); The Steel Helmet; The Dam Busters (British version); Reach for the Sky (British version); The Bridge on the River Kwai (British version); From Here to Eternity (French version); Bio Bravo; High Noon; Carmen Jones (Italian version); Gigi; Jailhouse Rock; and On the Waterfront (Italian version).

We are indeed fortunate that Mr. Nourmand has shared his taste and collection with us in this volume.

After you have finished enjoying these images, I suggest that you take a look at the logo for the organization, project, or company you work for. How well does it establish what you are trying to accomplish? You can use these posters as a guide to what is possible.

Be sure to make your visions vividly available to all!

Walter Wick's fun photos and Jean Marzollo's tricky riddles have returned in this I Spy "best of," a compilation of some of the duo's most entertaining "Where's Waldo?"-style visual scavenger hunts.

Kids and grownups should be amply entertained digging up hidden treasure from a dozen different two-page tableaus, like "Baking Cookies": "I spy a boot, five arrows, blue hair,/A deer, four flames, a little green bear;/Five white beards, two three-string guitars,/Six raisin eyes, and three treetop stars." Wick's detail-rich photographs span from the realistic--like The Rainbow Express (an excitingly in-progress train diorama) and Arts & Crafts (a craft table crowded with thumbtacks, pipe cleaners, and the like)--to the more surreal, like Inventor's Workshop, a confabulation of live electrodes and steaming test tubes.

Ultimate Challenger makes a fine introduction to the 20-plus-volume I Spy series (Treasure Hunt, School Days, and Marzollo gladly adds value here with two pages of brand-new additional riddles. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

My son loves the entire I Spy series so it came as no real surprise that he was excited to get this book. I like the idea that the puzzles are challenging even to an adult and cannot be solved in mere seconds. They take a certain amount of concentration of the part of the child but not so much that puzzle becomes so difficult that they want to quit.

The book is both challenging and interesting to all ages. I also like the size of the book and that it's a hard cover.

I like this I Spy book best of all. Not only does it have some of the best scenes from some of the previous I Spy books, but it also has some cool new riddles. Various scenes include "Rainbow Express" From I Spy Fantasy, "A is for..." From I Spy School Days, and "Baking Cookies" From I Spy Christmas. I read this whenever I feel like I need to pass the time because it is so much fun looking for things.

Overall, 5 Stars. If you can find this book, buy it. It is top-notch fun!

3 out of 5 stars More (and Less) of the Same.......2004-09-17

While there's nothing particularly wrong with this book, there's nothing groundbreaking, either. The pictures are taken from other books in the series, and while the riddles are new, they aren't any more difficult or involved than usual. Think of this as "ultimate" in the sense of "last in a series" (until the next one comes out), not "highest in degree or order, utmost or extreme" (definitions via WordNet).

In addition to this book, I also have the Spooky Night, Christmas, and Mystery I Spy books. Of the 12 pictures in this collection five come from those books (two each from Spooky Night and Christmas, one from Mystery). Also with only 12 pictures, "Ultimate Challenger" has one fewer picture than the Christmas and Mystery books. And because the pictures come from a variety of sources, there isn't even a "find the common element" usually present at the end of an I Spy book.

To be sure the pictures are creatively staged and the riddles occasionally make good use of word play (trunk: is that elephant, tree or luggage?), and there are the usual bonus riddles at the end of the book. Make sure you have a very good light source over your shoulder or head because the finish on the pages and lighting of some of the pictures can make the objects even harder to find.

If you're new to I Spy or don't have any of the books recycled here (check the Amazon Search Table of Contents for a list of the pictures, the Back Cover has, I believe, a list of the books involved), the "Ultimate Challenger" isn't bad - and it's more disappointing than terrible if you do have some of the books already. Just don't expect anything too incredible (either in terms of quality or quantity), or you'll be let down.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Definately Worthwhile - A Must-Have Book for Mayberry Lovers.......2003-02-24

Originally written & published in 1987, this 272 page collection interviews, articles, essays, letters, and encyclopedia-style entries is a GREAT READ! For Y2K folks used to fast-paced short articles, this book has a surprisingly up-to-date format, though the limits of 1980's technology can be seen in some of its map schematics and Mayberry set layouts. Definitely worthwhile reading for Mayberry fans, as well as those interested in the series or its actors. A very important book for any Mayberry-related collection.

Contents include: How to Get to Mayberry; Floorplans of 10 of the Main Rooms and Buildings in Mayberry; complete verses to theme song "The Fishin' Hole"; an alphabetic Encyclopedia of All Things Mayberry; a chapter on the movie "Return to Mayberry"; 1980's interviews with Jim "Gomer Pyle" Nabors, Aneta "Helen Crump" Corsaut, Betty "Thelma Lou" Lynn, Elinor "Ellie Walker" Donahue, Rance Howard (real-life father of Clint & Ron Howard), Clint "Leon"(the little PB&J cowboy)Howard, and Ron "Opie Taylor" Howard.

Scattered throughout the book are over 57 photographs, most full 8x11 page in the familiar glossy black & white that was the hallmark of the early years of the show. Most are production stills, promotional portraits, and some candid shots. Many of the photos are from the private collections of the actors.

There is also a short fun section especially for fans rating the Top Ten favorite episodes, plus over 225 trivia questions with answers suplied later in the book. This section includes an interview with the then-president of the largest fan club (over 12,000 members at that time) and a samples of several fanclub newsletters. (One of these at least currently has a great online website which I have visited!)

Finally there is a special index (to the encyclopedia listings)that are grouped by topic to help make use of the encyclopedia section more rewarding. Topic headings include "Animals of Mayberry", things relating to "Ernest T. Bass", another called "Kin and Family Connections in Mayberry", and "Mayberry in Song Including all Musical Matters".

We especially appreciated the color cover on the hardback edition: an 8x10 photographic reproduction of a cross-stitch pattern showing a main design of Opie's birds (Winkin, Blinkin & Nod) on their tree branch, with a border of the names of eighteen main characters of Mayberry surrounding the title of the book. This is a frame-able book cover!

Our one "complaint" was that the author's love of Mayberry is sometimes "too evident" however, that small "flaw" is easily and indulgently overlooked by those of us that feel the same way.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it!.......1999-05-21

This is over-priced for what it delivers. The format is not very interesting; the bulk of the book is an A-Z encyclopedia-like guide to just about everything that was seen or heard pertaining to The Andy Griffith Show. While some of the information is revelatory a lot of it is TOO trivial. I believe I read somewhere else that this book has a synopsis of every episode; that is not true, it does NOT, which greatly disappointed me. Also, drawings and diagrams in the book are crude and unappealing. There are some decent black and white photos, but not one color photo. The only thing I did enjoy were the interviews with some of the stars, but they were condensed (I wanted more). There are 272 pages to this book but when you consider the price it seems like it's not a whole lot for the money. A big, big dissappointment!
