Ideas about images as evidence.......2003-05-07

Burke discusses using images as historical resources and evidence, focusing on both the positive insights that might be garnered from imagery as well as the potential problems. One such historiographical danger is that the historian might view images from within their present context and not with the same significance or contextual milieu that the original historical actors might have attributed to them. This point, and others throughout the text, are elementary to many historians; others could use a friendly reminder of presentist tendencies. While there is nothing revolutionary to modern historians in Burke's text, it is a pleasant reminder of some of the pitfalls in constructing historical narrative based on visual evidence.

great stuff!.......2006-08-29

I hadn't read "comic books" or graphic novels or whatever they are called now since I was a kid. Superheros don't really do anything for me, and the few graphic treatments of literature I'd read seemed forced.

But then a friend recommended this slim volume, and I bought it here on Amazon.

I was very surprised - the expressive b&w art and the very original story are seamlessly complementary, and I was glued to it all the way through. It's a slightly surreal - but also, at the same time, very realistic - story, and while I don't want to give anything away, if you're a fan of LOST or unexplained natural phenomena or things like that I think you'll get a kick out of it.

I am anxiously awaiting the next issue!

An excellent follow up.......2000-10-10

If you are interested in nostalga and/or drive in theatres, this is an excellent book. You may remember that Don and Susan Sanders came out with an excellent coffee table book entitled: "The American Drive-in Theatre." The original book was packed with previously lost photographs and memories of the drive in theatre.

Don and Susans latest work, "Drive in Memories : Popcorn and Romance Under the Stars," while physically smaller, is full of additional pictures and information about the drive-in theatres of yesterday. The new book is well written and edited. It will make a worthy edition to any one interested in the drive-in theatre.

...and hear the crickets. What a trip! Although drive-ins survive today, only a select few go to the trouble to capture the essence of the hey-day of the drive-in theatre. What is lacking in reality has been captured on paper. I didn't know what the Sanders could do to add to their previous book, The American Drive-In Movie Theater, but I was pleasantly surprised. I love drive-ins.......2000-07-30

People remember different things from their youth, and one I remember most fondly is going to the drive-in movie. Because of that, I am drawn to books like this one. Though the text of the book is somewhat limited, it still evokes wonderful memories. It would be on my recommended list for anyone who wants to relive the "good ole days!"

The Sanders have perfectly captured the essence of the drive-in movie theatre. My own work on the subject has given me the chance to verify that Drive-in Movie Memories is a celebration of outdoor movies! It is even better than their first book.

Daylle's books are a wealth of information for the artist who is serious about their craft and wants to make a living from it. As I've stated before she makes daunting tasks seem achievable and her real life experience is absolutely encouraging and inspirational.

My music biz bible!.......2000-09-05

This book is the best I've read on how to get a record deal. Actually, there are no other books out specifically on this topic. Ms. Schwartz has organized a lot of great information into a concise book. She includes lots of specific things that are common sense but we still don't remember to do. I've read it twice already, there's so much info packed into each chapter. I'm putting out my own CD and the info in the Real Deal was very relevant since I'm trying to get a distribution deal. It's also great for artist development. I read her other book, Start & Run Your Own Record Label and got just as much out of this one. They have different info - she didn't rehash much so you have to read both. The Real Deal is the real deal - she tells how hard it is to get a deal. But it offers lots of motivation and a good spiritual attitude. Thank you Daylle Deanna Schwartz for writing such informative books!

An Essential Guide for All Musicians.......2000-08-18

As a former recording artist turned entertainment lawyer, I highly recommend this book! This is a great basic guide for new musicians (and their managers) who are learning their way around the record industry. It is detailed yet infinitely readable. It is a good reference guide to the ins and outs of getting a record deal - and has other valuable information about the inner workings and politics of getting signed.

I thought this was a great book for getting familiar with Sudoku. I had tried another one before, "Pocket Sudoku" with a forward by Will Shortz, and found it to be tedious. This one is more straightforward and fun. Plus - the paper holds up better to erasing - which I did a lot of at first!

A good number of easy and medium ones to start off with, then difficult ones to enjoy and solve. Then there are the fiendish ones to really satisfy when the 'urge' kicks in--not so tough that you need a computer to solve, yet challenging enough to take half hour, fair bit of concentration, some pencil markings, some head-scratching...then voila, the EUREKA moment!

Oh, the four stars is for the limited number of Fiendish puzzles; there are only 25 out of the 100. Would give it a '5' if the whole book were all of Fiendish level.
