From its loud purple and orange cover to its innovative page layout and design, inspiration=ideas is stuffed with creative samples-posters, packaging, book jackets, logos, illustrations-inspirational photographs, honest advice, text and quotes. Inspiration=ideas is an essential reference for creative types-designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers and writers. Or anyone who has a care to be pushed and inspired.

A Must-Have for Creatives.......2002-10-26
I can't stand chain restaurants-TGI Friday's, Bennigan's, Applebee's, Olive Garden-they're all cut from the same tired rug. I bet, however, if I went to one of these establishments with Petrula Vrontikis that I would be overjoyed, eating up every bite of my shrimp fettuccine alfredo or potato skin appetizer.
I had the privilege, actually, of sharing a meal with Petrula-at a small uptown cafe-in Atlanta several weeks ago. She was visiting as a guest speaker at my school, The Portfolio Center, where I study graphic design. During her presentation, she showed her work and talked about her design career. She presented slides of her creative work, including restaurant identity design for Kozo Hasegawa of the Global Dining group in Tokyo. At lunch, she named several books (The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd; Made You Look by Stefan Sagmeister; Flatness is God by Ryan McGinness) that were must-haves for young designers, like me.
Weeks later, my classmates and I still talk about Petrula-and her inspirational book-both in and outside of school. That speaks to the type of woman that Petrula Vrontikis is-present, compassionate, caring, of-the-moment, not afraid. She designs with her whole self, pulling creative influence from unlikely sources-travel photographs, signage, international currency.

The pool of responses to the "ongoing sources of inspiration" question posed to each designer is fun. Or design radical Stefan Sagmeister whose best situation for coming up with an idea is sitting on his roof at 5:30 A.M., sipping espresso, smoking a cigarette.

It Fed My (Designer's) Soul.......2002-07-30
I had hurt my back earlier this summer, and read this book from cover to cover during my recovery. It was SUCH a treat, and there was so much more to it than your average design book.
The layout of the book is beautiful and innovative. Within the structure, the elements in each chapter would change colors or form to reflect the inspiration of the highlighted designer.
I think what is most appealing about this book is that it includes the spiritual and philisophical motivations behind the design process as viewed by these designers. It was a way to get to know some of these talented designers, and to realize that many of the things that motivate and inspire them, also stir my creative juices. It also enlightened me to the fact that everything we do that feeds our soul - whether it be spending time in nature, appreciating a disintigrating billboard, or listening to music we love, is fuel for our creativity.

No doubt, professionals will enjoy Petrula's book, but as an educator I'd especially recommend it to design students and young designers considering or entering the field. This breathtakingly beautiful volume, chocked with gorgeous images, is so simple and elegant in its structure, you can flip to any page, any name, and be moved, inspired, stimulated, and informed. The first half is like a window into the minds of your favorite designers, giving you a peek at what drives them to create and what is born of that drive. The last half of the book is a salvo of spectacular, superlative found images that will force you to raise your own bar. As the title says, inspiration equals ideas, and there is much inspiration to be gleaned from these pages.

A meticulouly researched book. Unlike other books written on the subject, Mr. Robar injects facts, not personal emotion.
This book has clarified many questions I had on the relocation and the reason behind it. I always felt our government did NOT relocate people based on race and this book proves it. 'Intelligence, Internment & Relocation' by Keith Robar actually compliments 'MAGIC' by David Lowman and 'In Defense Of Internment' by Michelle Malkin. All MUST READS!
Attempting to present a balanced viewpoint.......2003-07-17

Truth really is stranger than fiction.......2002-03-23
Here is book lovers of history will enjoy. Unlike other histories on the subject, this one emphasizes the government's justification for the evacuation order that moved ethnic Japanese from a potential battlefield on the West Coast.
It is not written in the usual pedantic, professorial manner of many histories but in a thoroughly entertaining and readable style. Facts not generally known are found in abundance within its pages. For instance, we learn that the Civil Rights Act of 1988 owes its final form to the fact that a Republican senator had to leave a meeting of the predominately Democratic committee to take care of some urgent personal business in the men's room. In his absence, the member of the congressional Joint Committee ganged up on him and held a "voice vote" that guaranteed the passage of the bill in its present form. Readers may be shocked to find that serious government business is conducted in such a cavalier manner. You will also learn of instances where documents were altered before being submitted into evidence and of outright lies told to the court.
The commission established by congress to study this issue is subjected to some penetrating and caustic scrutiny by the author. Irrefutable evidence is presented to prove that the commission was biased against pro-government witnesses. These witnesses were accused by the commission members of being racist, and were booed, and jeered by an out-of-control audience. The Commission's report is subjected to particularly trenchant analysis of what is a skillfully and maliciously revised history of these WW II events. This is the report that is to be used as a text in our public schools to propagandize our students.
Important Historical Reference material.......2000-08-21
This book stands out, not just because of its flashy red cover! Although it is a history of World War II events on the Pacific Coast and Hawaii he avoids the all-too-common pedantic, textbook style that is so prevalent. The result is a book that is quite readable without sacrificing accuracy. The author goes into detail on the formation and activities of the Congressional Commission (2 out of 9 of whom received payments based on their own recommendations mind you!) which was formed in 1980 to study these issues. Why am I not surprised to find out about such a built-in bias to a congressional commission?
One of the major issues in the book is the impact of our penetrating Japan's Foreign Ministry code (nicknamed "MAGIC"). This operation, the author tells us, permitted our wartime leaders to see the "cards" in Japan's hands and helped enormously in the effort to beat Japan. Much of this secret intelligence has been declassified since 1976, yet none of the Commissioners were aware of this major coup of WWII and ignored the evidence when others tried to give it to them. Many of these documents are published in this book for the first time. One member of the Commission staff is quoted as having referred to the "MAGIC" intelligence as "a myth and an illusion." Tell that to General McArthur and Admiral Nimitz!
Its clear that this book is a good addition to any effort to understand World War II, military intelligence, espionage, and what information was available to President Roosevelt when he decided to try to win a war he worked so hard not to get involved in.

Groundbreaking Sitcom that Paved the Way for Others!.......2006-09-18
A great book about the genesis and history of what I believe is the funniest sitcom ever. When you love something as much as I do like the Dick Van Dyke Show, the little nuances and details are fascinating! Vince Waldron goes into great detail without boring the reader in the meantime. It is too bad that this early sitcom has not gotten it's due as a groundbreaking show-- showing where the male lead works and his co-wokers, the reality of married life, a married couple in bed (albeit twin beds) and, of course, Mary Tyler Moore in Capri pants (scandalous)! All kidding aside, if you are a fan of the background scenes of TV or movies, this book is fun to read and reveals how the cast came together, the family atmosphere that resulted, the awards won, the demise of the series and the eventual post-series cast successes. You will find this book refreshing and hard to put down and won't be disappointed in purchasing it. The only thing I was disappointed in was that some of the episode descriptions were sparse. Buy the book, read it, enjoy....then, go buy the DVD series sets or set of all five seasons!
Toe in the Faucet and other stories..........2004-03-21
The other reviewers have pretty well covered it. This show was as good as it gets, and it never seems to date with time.
This book is an invaluable guide to the greatest show/series of all time, and represents oustanding value. The pairing of Dick and Mary was a stroke of genius, and the chemistry between them lifted this brilliantly conceived and well-written series onto another level. Remember the 'Nuts' episode?
Even the cutesy touches, such as the way Dick randomly tripped over or side-stepped the ottoman just added to the seemingly endless magic that was the Dick Van Dyke Show.
I had been itching to get my paws on this guide ever since I read Mary's autobiography After All, in which she rightly sings the show's praises - they both won Emmys of course - and this Definitive History illustrates just why it was out there on its own.
A wonderful book, and absolutely essential for the serious fan of this unique and unforgettable series.
"DEFINITIVE" Is Right! A Fascinatingly-Detailed Volume!.......2003-07-21
This book features an amazing amount of insight into one of the very best television programs to ever grace the airwaves, "The Dick Van Dyke Show".
If you're an avid fan of this 1961-1966 CBS-TV program, trust me, you will NOT be able to stop turning pages until you've read the whole thing!
In each chapter, we learn new tidbits of behind-the-scenes information. There's info (including some brief biographical data) about every single member of the show's stellar cast.
For example: Did You Know .... that the audience laughter went on so long when Greg Morris & his on-screen spouse entered the Petrie home at the end of the episode "That's My Boy??" that the editor actually had to cut out some of the audience hysterics in order to fit the episode into the allowable timeframe? (Too bad, too. I'd love to have heard the WHOLE thing. A great episode indeed.)
The book also reveals the fact that Mary Tyler Moore stormed off the set in a huff one time, while doing the ultimately-classic episode, "Never Bathe On Saturday". She was upset because she was off-camera and talking through a door for most of the show. But, after seeing how funny the show worked as written, MTM felt bad about her tirade.
"Never Bathe On Saturday" features Dick's great line, after finding that the hotel bathroom door is locked: "Don't toy with me, you saucy wench." :) LOL!!!!
Plus there's a complete episode guide, with still more tidbits written within most of the episode descriptions.
I cannot imagine a more thorough and detailed Dick Van Dyke Show volume than this one. This book is a MUST for any fan of this highly-intelligent and magnificently-written TV program.
Awesome Book about An Awesome Classic TV Show!.......2001-12-18
This book is super awesome, it's just the best episode guide book ever written and I'm kind of partial since The Dick Van Dyke Show is my favorite classic TV show, I especially like the episode guide part which explained in a wonderful well written detail about each different episode, when they were made when they were originally shown on TV what they were about, who the guest actors were etc. I very strongly recommend this amazing book to any major Dick Van Dyke Show fan!

Good introduction to sound healing, but not music therapy........1999-09-09
This book is a readable introduction to the world of "sound healing" (as opposed to the music therapy discipline). Gardner discusses practices like toning, chanting, mantras, and the various ways tones, rhythms and timbres may interact with one's body in order to produce healing effects. She takes examples from different cultures and different time periods; however, not all of her evidence has a strong background, and some of her ideas appear to not be supported by evidence at all. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the world of sound healing, but if you are more interested in therapies that can be supported by emperical evidence, you'll want to bypass this one.

Phase 10 is very fun (especially when you bring it to family gatherings). The more people you have playing, the longer the game will last. It's for ages 8 and up and for 2-6 players. It's a game of both skill and luck and never gets old.

If you are looking for a challenging game that is easy to learn, Phase 10 may just be what you are looking for. We encountered this card game after Thanksgiving dinner ... it seems complicated at first but once you get started, you want to keep playing.
If you like Uno, Rummy, Yahtzee, Poker.. it's all of these games meshed into one.
We are addicted now and play weekly.
Addicting LOTS OF FUN.......2005-07-28
If you enjoy playing, uno, spades, or rummy this is the game for you. I was introduced to this game at my neighbors get together. I went out the next day and bought it for myself. The game will drag on if you have too many players. For the most enjoyable game I recommend 4-5 players and age does not matter. My players are usually between the ages of 9 - 26. I play so often I don't even take score anymore. I suggest only keeping score if it's just 2 players. Other than that its a waste because whoever completes phase 10 first wins.

This is a very good card game. It is mainly luck of the draw but there is some skill involved at times. I will say that I just finished a game, no, we didn't finish, but we were going on playing for 4 hours straight. WARNING! Don't play with too many people, you will suffer a game of great lengths. Although, I have played games that took more than one day to complete.
This game is very fun though. Great for those camping trips, family get-togethers, long rainy days (like today). I highly recommend. The only bad thing I have to say is that the games can go on, and on, and on....but that is easily dealt with. Give it a try if you're a fan of UNO, Skip-Bo, Rummy, etc...
