Not too good of a book.......2006-04-05
When a kid is trying to draw a cartoon insect, there are a few ways they could approach the task. One might make the cartoon bug a sort of characature of the insect by exagerrating the existing features of the insect. Another might be to abandon reality and go a more creative route, giving the bug life and personality. Unfortunatly, this book does niether. The scant 24 page book consists of only 6 pages that having drawing insructions. The result of these pages produce unimaginative drawings of only six different bugs that resemble unimpressive clip art style renderings that aren't at all anatomically correct. The Mosquito looks like a flying ant-eater. If you want to teach a kid to draw bugs, a quick internet image search would produce a better outcome.

Very Disappointing.......2007-07-10
I have been looking for a history and filmography of Hammer Studios films for awhile now. This book turned out to be very disappointing. Half the movie stills didn't have captions and the plot summaries had glaring errors.
For Hammer completists only.......2004-12-28
Stay clear of that one!
This is an updated (or so they have you believe) edition of a book that was originally published in the 1970s. The first edition didn't even carry an author's name and was more or less the first book length publication about Hammer movies ever. It was effectively just a rehash of two or three sentence summaries of all the films without any real film historical info. It did have a good number of pictures, mainly black and white and poorly reproduced. The first edition at least has historical value and a gallery of a dozen or so one page Hammer Glamour photos. The current edition here has decided to drop all Hammer Glamour pics (THE main reason most even remember the book) and to replace it with a general chapter on Vampire Cinema (written by Jack Hunter) that is neither here nor there. All the remaining chapter are pretty much identical to the 1970s book.
I have both of editions. The Glamour pics are now graced by autographs of some of the ladies. The newer edition I got as I foolishly thought it would add some info.... as opposed to actually offer *less* for the Hammer fan!
For Hammer completists only. If you really need to buy this, at least try and get the original version from the 1970s. If you need an introductory book full of info and decent pictures, go for Marcus Hearn's/Alan Barnes' HAMMER STORY instead.
A Great Place for Newer Devotees of Hammer's Horrors.......2004-01-02
This is a wonderful guide through Hammer's world of monsters, and should be of particular use to the newer initiate into the Hammer Cannon, yet still manages to provide enough bits for the seasoned veteran, such as the many photos (a good amount are color) and a chapter on the movie-almost-weres. It is a light read, and doesn't contain much critical commentary other than whether or not the film was successful. A few behind-the-scenes tidbits are mentioned, and a quick summary of each movie.
This was the first book of Hammer I bought, and I read through it in a night. It helped me base my opions on which film series I wished to pursue first (my favorite still being the Frankensteins), as well as lend a general knowledge to the company as a whole. Though it really is a scratch on the surface, it whet my appetite for more serious readings.
The only slight fault - and it's nothing to gripe about really - is that the movies are not listed in chronological order, which makes cross referencing between series somewhat awkward. However, on the other hand, if one is only interested in the Frankenstein Series (or whatever have you), the movies are laid out in one solid chapter, and therefore easier to reference to each other. So, a give and take, but essential nonetheless.
Everything you always wanted to know about Hammer Films.......2001-06-30
This reference book provides excellent behind the scenes looks at not only the films in Hammer Studio's famous Dracula and Frankenstein series, but all their other horror films (e.g., "Quartermass and the Pit"). You will read about Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, of course, but also of Terence Fisher and some of the other directors the studio employed to lesser degrees of success. I especially like when Hunter talks about how the studio decided to approach the Dracula series (you know I have a soft spot in my heart for the undead). It is amazing how well I remember so many of these movies and I know I have not seen them for years. Fortunately, AMC has been running a lot of Hammer films on Friday night's this year. Not a scholarly work, "House of Horror" is a treat for fans, not academics.
Fangtastic!.......2000-03-19
One of the best reference works on Hammer Horror. Lots of film making history and behind the scenes goings on plus some great interviews with the leading names. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the great British horror movie. It could also help you in choosing which Hammer films you would like to buy from Amazon.

Excellent guide to Hammer Studios film, includes the history of the studio from the very beginnings, lots of B&W pictures; check out the Hammer leading ladies gallery (Va Va Voom!!!), includes 8 page color section of publicity hand out art, interviews with Michael Carreras, Terence Fisher, Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing. Complete filmography. Hammer films are being released on DVD, if you need a handy reference before purchasing any of them check this book out.

Absolutely fabulous book - goes over all the details of setting up and configuring your Mac or PC for doing computer based music production. Yes, it's Dory, the blue friend of Marlin from "Finding Nemo". Dory introduces herself to the reader and tells us about what she is doing. Of course, her short-term memory loss thing shows up. The illustrations are fun and I suspect that adults will chuckle more about this book than kids will. You'll love the ending, if that is what it is.

I was disappointed.......2007-07-14
This book was too focused on their particular company, their yarns, their techniques. Not too much to generalize from. Pictures are GORGEOUS and the sweaters are too -- though so modern-looking! I wanted something more along the lines of teaching the traditions in general, and also wanted discussion of how the colors are chosen & matched up. However if you want specific patterns & want to use their yarns (which are beautiful but beyond my budget), this is a good book.
New way to knit fair isle.......2007-05-10
What a great book for learning a new way to knit Fair Isle sweaters! Requires reader to have some knowledge of knitting, but the technique is easy to learn after some practice. No more tangled yarn or puckered surfaces when switching colors. Book also contains some of the background on "Philosphers Wool" which I found interesting. Contains some great patterns and encourages a knitter to use imagination when combining colors.
A fair isle book for beginner's.......2007-01-11
A very nice knitting book for beginner's it's my first attempt for fair isle knitting. I just received the kit I ordered for one of the designs fractured diamonds that is in their book. Very good price for the kit and for this month their video is for free when you buy a kit. Very fast delivery of the kit in 3 days it was here from Canada. Their video explains everything very well for making a fair isle sweater it's 56 minutes. And when you buy their products you know you are supporting a small independent producer who is trying to pay other farmers in the area a reasonable price for their wool. And from the story of their farm in the beginning of the book I understood why here in Greece come people from Brittain to shear flocks and as a payment they get the wool they shear. It was on the news some time ago.

THis is an excellent book. There is important information about care of your handmade garments that is without a doubt - super.
The patterns was my intent in purchase but I got much more than was I was expecting.

I loved this book. It was one of the best investments I could have made at this point in the evolution of my knitting skills. I had done some knitting with more than one color before and loved the feeling it gave me, so I really wanted to try a Fair Isle sweater. A friend loaned me this book and I was so impressed that I bought my own copy. The photographs are beautiful, the instructions and tips are well written and well placed. The step by step instruction and illustrations for knitting with two colors was very easy to follow. I was able to feel like a pro at this technique relatively quickly and loved every minute of time I spent with it. I just finished my first Fair Isle sweater and I can not describe how thrilled I am with the results. I just bought the yarn today to begin my next sweater!
This book is good for a confident beginner, but will easily boost your skill status!
