Famous for outdoor scenes bathed in light, the impressionists are hard to imagine as dedicated still-life painters. By and large, they weren't. But Monet's rare small paintings of flowers were snapped up by contemporary collectors. And several artists who exhibited with the impressionists, influenced them, or were influenced by them--including Manet, van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cézanne--devoted a sizable portion of their oeuvre to the genre. While Impressionist Still Life is a somewhat misleading title--yet another marketing ploy to attract lovers of a popular style, it seems--this book makes a good case for the importance of this intimate genre of painting to major themes and techniques of later-19th-century art. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. (September 22, 2001, to January 13, 2002, then traveling to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), this volume is lavishly illustrated and rich in detailed information. Five essays trace themes ranging from the influence of 18th-century painter Jean-Baptiste Chardin on still-life composition and the use of color to the strikingly modern way Cézanne's famous apples devalued subject matter to emphasize the physicality of brush strokes. The stunning paintings featured in full-page plates include some rarely seen canvases, such as Monet's Jar of Peaches from 1866. In this tour de force of illusionism, the flattened look of peaches packed in a glass jar contrasts with fuzzy whole peaches that cast reflections on a marble table scribbled with bold white veins. A genre that could encompass both the luminous intimacy of Eva Gonzalès' White Shoes and the restless drama of Cézanne's Still Life with Ginger Jar and Eggplants turned out to be uniquely suited to individual perceptions of modern life. --Cathy Curtis
Book Description
The popularity of still-life painting continues to soar-as evidenced by the success of Abrams' recent book on Manet's still lifes, as well as by several major museum exhibitions. With lush colorplates reproducing more than 65 masterworks by 17 Impressionist artists, this exceptional collection of still lifes is a brilliant display of the genre in all its glory.
Van Gogh, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin, Pissarro, Monet, and Manet are among the artists featured. Illuminating the paintings are an introduction by Eliza Rathbone and essays on the still-life tradition and the influence of Chardin. This handsome volume accompanies an exhibition at the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Beautiful images.......2004-12-30
This book is just gorgeous! The essays are interesting and engaging and the plates are beautiful. Besides the most well known impressionists, you will find an Eva Gonzales, and BEST OF ALL--GUSTAVE CAILLBOTTE!! Buy it, you will not be disappointed.
Impressionist Still Life.......2002-01-06
I was surpised to learn new information that Manet made still lifes with the same-like object used in Chardin's paintings. They were arranged differently or presented in a different manner. There is infomation you cannot obtain when visiting exhibits or museums. It is hard to put the book down once you start reading. This is the first still life book on impressionism I have ever seen. And, it gives more information on still life in general. I am a professional artist and have felt still lives were boring and couldn't really get into them. Because this book excited me to look at still lives and do them, it deserves and 5-star rating.
More than 80 masterworks of still-life painting.......2001-10-15
Impressionist Still Life showcases more than 80 masterworks of still-life painting by seventeen Impressionists working in the latter half of the nineteenth-century. The featured artists include Cezanne, van Gogh, Monet, Cassatt, Degas, Manet, Renoir, Pissarro, Caillbotte, and Gauguin. Impressionist Still Life is the companion book to a traveling exhibition currently touring the United States beginning with The Philips Collection, Washington, DC (September 22, 2001 - January 13, 2002) and then traveling to The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (February 17 to June 9, 2002). A strongly recommended addition to academic, personal, and community library artbook collections, the superbly reproduced paintings comprising Impressionist Still Life are enhanced with informative essays by noted art scholars Eliza Rathbone (Phillips Collection); George Shackelford (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston); Jeannene M. Pryblyski (independent art historian and critics based in San Francisco); John McCoubrey (University of Pennsylvania); and Richard Shiff (University of Texas, Austin).
Book Description
The Impressionists showed us a new way to look at the world with their graceful and fleeting visions of city streets and the countryside. But one aspect of their work has gone largely overlooked--the still-life painting. Here are some of the most memorable masterpieces in this genre, from the most beloved artists of the movement including Caillebotte, Cezanne, Degas, Fantin-Latour, Gauguin, Mamet, Monet, Morisot, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, and van Gogh.
These works depicting flowers, fruit, and table settings provide glimpses into the quaint and beautiful private spaces of Paris in the late nineteenth century. They evoke the comforts of a well-appointed home during the era when a new modern lifestyle and a new modern style of painting were emerging.
This charming book was produced in conjunction with The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., which organized the landmark traveling exhibition Impressionist Still Life.

Bauhaus (World of Art)
ASIN: 0880641754 |
Book Description
The first history of the most important center of modernism reveals the clash of art and politics in an age of ideology.
The Bauhaus is the most celebrated artistic institution of our time. Its ideas transformed our urban landscape. Nothing we read, wear, or live in is devoid of its influence. Yet there has never been a history of the Bauhaus and its fourteen tempestuous years, when those who taught there included Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and many other great pioneers of modern art. It was here that the ideas that would dominate the world of art for the better part of this century clashed and became defined, in an era when the contest between ideologies was fought with the fervor of a religious war. Elaine S. Hochman's unprecedented access to the school's archives, formerly in East Germany, give this book an intimate and surprising view of the tumultuous day-to-day events that made the Bauhaus the world's most influential crucible of modernism.
Customer Reviews:
The Bauhaus Is Our House.......2000-11-07
This interesting book addresses an important gap in America's understanding of the Bauhaus - the social/political and historical context that gave rise to the architectural school and artistic vision that has come to permeate our everyday lives. Hochman convincingly argues that only by understanding the combat experiences of Walter Gropius during WWI and the chaos of the Weimar Republic, can one appreciate the socialist and utopian ideology that was at the core of the Bauhaus. Her descriptions of Gropius' ongoing struggle to protect his school, the valiant efforts of Dessau's mayor Fritz Hesse, and Mies van der Rohe's attempts to reign in the radical communist student faction, are particularly vivid. At times the narrative is hard to follow, but in fairness the author is trying to describe one of the most confused and chaotic periods of modern German history. If you're interested in the Bauhaus, Weimar Germany, or would just like to know how and why most of our houses and offices came to look the way they do, this book's for you.

Book Description
Built on a site of great and forgotten power, the mammoth Bentham International Hospital was to be the very definition of modern medical science at its best. But over the years, the spectres and dark secrets of the Hospital began to bore away at its heart, leaving its foundations cracked and vulnerable to the oldest of horrors and nightmares. When a prominent Commissioner of the City's Housing and Urban Development Department is brought to the Panopticon for evaluation after murdering her family, the haunted secrets of the hospital begin to unravel, leaving no one untouched. Julius, the prosthetic boy in room 13 is waking up. The black eggs are found. The lines between the patients and the doctors are blurring. This is where the end begins. Every cure is paid with a curse and every sin is birthed anew as the once brilliant light of modern medicine forsakes the world for the shadows it can no longer hide.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing is Quite What It Seems at Bentham Hospital.......2007-03-20
At Bentham Hospital, a psychiatric institution with an odd assortment of long term and short term patients, something strange is beginning to happen. However, despite the amazing illustrations of Greg Ruth, the story line is more confusing than it should be. There are links to secret societies (the raison d'etre for supernatural horror currently), a century old tuberculosis plague, people who may or may not have disappeared, and all sorts of other twists. Nevertheless, as the story unfolds, we only get more and more confused. Who is good and who is bad is never resolved. Nor, do we actually find out what the horror (or great benefit) that is supposed to arrive. This is the great shame. Despite elements that could lead to a really great graphic novel, it never quite gets there.
A lot of book for a little package.......2006-12-01
Well with respect to the previous review, Sudden Gravity is not a typical narrative, and if you're looking for a straight up easy to follow tale, then this clearly isn't the book for you. But IF you're the sort who like to engage a book actively, I think you'll find a wealth of treasures awaiting you. It's a week of time of the lives of the people in the hospital- somestories are brought to a conclusion, while others are left unresolved- but the overall sense of mystery and bizarro world logic will all but demand multiple readings. Think of it as a dream... a really really unnerving, unsettling dream that still is somehow warm and inviting.
Mixed Feelings.......2006-09-06
I bought this book because I was impressed by a preview of the artwork, and in that regard I was not disappointed. However, the writing leaves something to be desired. The story has a lot of plot points that don't really seem to be resolved and the ambiguity doesn't really contribute to the plot in a good way. In the end I felt let down, like all the things the book was trying to do were unfulfilled. Maybe this was too short a book to do the kind of story this was geared to be, but it still left me unsatisfied.
Book Description
This book provides a real life, in depth look at big league studio costume departments with an eye toward explaining what's involved, including costume design theories, department operations and management, from supervision to set labor, fittings, locations and more.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ.......2004-02-18
This book is probably THE most informative book I have ever read, irregardless of the subject. Everthing you need to know about costume design is here, in this book. Critical information when contemplating a career, that you cannot get in a classroom. The author has been there, worked in the "trenches", for years, has had a successful career, and is now willing to share years of accumulated knowledge. I was amazed at all I gained from this book.
Comprehensive and enjoyable reading........2001-12-01
An excellent "how to" for anyone in the costume or fashion business, or someone wanting to know more about the inside scoop of what it takes to make the costumes in a movie come together. Well written. Gave me a better appreciation for how movies look.
Book Description
During the years between the world wars, a small but dynamic community of African American jazz musicians left the United States and settled in Paris, creating a vibrant expatriate musical scene and introducing jazz to the French. While the Harlem Renaissance was taking off across the Atlantic, entertainers in Montmartre, the epicenter of the Parisian scene, contributed enthusiastically to a culture that thrived for two decades, until the occupation of the city by German troops on June 18, 1940. In Harlem in Montmartre, William Shack takes a fascinating look at this extraordinary cultural moment, one in which African American musicians could flee the racism of the United States to pursue their lives and art in the relatively free context of bohemian Europe. His book is the first comprehensive treatment of the rise and decline of the African American music community in Paris; in it, he considers the international dimensions of black experience in the modern era and explores the similarities and differences of Harlem-style jazz and culture in Europe and America.
Shack focuses on some of the principal actors who played critical roles in shaping the jazz scene in Montmartre--Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, and Bricktop--but he also discusses others who opened clubs, underwrote loans, and contributed their musical talents to this unparalleled experiment. As an anthropologist, Shack pays particular attention to the club culture. He describes the musicians' experiences, the settings in which they performed, and the response of French audiences.
Shack's meticulous research and encyclopedic knowledge of Montmartre's jazz culture, including the people and places involved, make this a riveting, authoritative work. Seamlessly fusing biographical, sociological, and historical details, he brings this unique era to life and demonstrates how the Paris jazz scene played a crucial role in legitimizing jazz--both in Europe and the United States.
Customer Reviews:
A Brilliant story!.......2001-10-10
William Shack, late professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, has done a terrific job in bringing to life the Parisian jazz scene between the Great Wars. At the end of the First World War black Americans in the US Expeditionary Force, most notably James Reese Europe's Hellfighters Band, essentially introduced jazz to France and, by staying in Paris or returning thereto after demobilization, they formed the condensing nucleus of the black American jazz community that flourished in Montmartre between the Wars. Contemporary to the Harlem Renaissance in New York, the "Harlem in Montmartre" community provided black jazz musicians, entertainers, and entrepeneurs, an exciting environment, largely free from the racial bigotry and Jim Crow policies common in the US. This book goes a long way to become the standard work on the matter, describing the principal individuals, the clubs, the shows, the music, all interwoven in a lively and fluent style that helps to revive these exciting and by now long gone decades. Wonderful!

Customer Reviews:
Great book. Highly recommended!.......2006-08-23
This is an extremely underrated book. I concede there may have been some errors in the hand ranking chart, odds charts and some pretty bad typos throughout the earlier printings of this book but in the edition I purchased these errors have been corrected. Anyway, if you can get past those (I know I don't need to be re-taught the hand rankings etc) then you will discover that this really is a gem of a book.
Maroon is a very articulate thinker and covers a lot of ground in this book. He explains some complex and subtle ideas in very clear, simple language. The section on short handed play is EXCELLENT and is worth the price of the book alone- especially for someone like me who only plays 6 max tables on the internet. His sections on expectation, pot odds, standard deviation, bankroll requirements, playing after the flop, moving up in limits, playing for a living, plugging leaks etc are all excellent as well and all this information is communicated in a very conversational, easily understandable way. The book is also presented in a unique way with colored diagrams and an aesthetically pleasant layout.
There are very few hand examples in this book but I think that's a good thing. I find sample hands really boring to read and would much rather get to work on understanding the conceptual ideas and considerations behind a given play than read hand examples. Maroon seems to me to be a great poker strategist and his recommendations seem well thought out and I imagine they would be very effective. I'm not surprised he has enjoyed the level of success that he has given that he obviously possesses such a deep understanding of the game of limit hold 'em.
This is probably not the ideal choice for a beginning poker player (although they would be far better off reading something like this than say, Phil Hellmuth's lunacy), I would say intermediate and advanced players will benefit more from this book. I highly recommend it and consider it a shame that the publishers were so careless in the printing of this book because in doing so they have really tarnished a great piece of work.
If this book didn't contain the mistakes it does I suspect it would be on the "must read" list of most players.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.......2006-02-11
This author is an arrogant, cocky, jackass who runs one of the best, most informative poker websites out there - yes, he is a dick, but his site is good! He is an above-average player and fairly knowledgable about the game. However his book is really nothing more than regurgitated material that can be found in every other poker book out on the market. Don't waste your money (unless you feel that it is a reasonable donation for the material that you get from his site). Some, including the author, have boasted about the section on shorthanded play being the "most advanced section ever written on the subject". This is ludicrous. It is indeed "short" (in length, that is), but not of good qualilty. It does NOT provide examples. It is general and watered-down.
There you have it: The "good" (the website), the "bad" (the book), and the "ugly" (the author).
Don't jump on Matt for the publisher's errors.......2005-12-27
I have only gotten to page 26 and like the other reviews have noticed many errors in the hand rankings. The hands are in order but the cards shown as an example are completely off and do not even match the text. A quick visit to mattmaroon.com will clear up the problem as the first thing you will see on the website is a link to "Book Errata" where he adresses all the errors mentioned by myself and the other posters. He cites publisher's errors as the reason and it is understandable as the pictures (put in by the publisher) do not correspond to what Matt actually wrote. He corrects the errors including the lack of formatting in the odds chart on page 245. You would expect thigns like this to be noticed prior to printing, but mistakes do happen. Other than that, everything has been excellent. His introdcutions have been clear and his examples completely illustrate what he is talking about.
One thing I have particularly liked thus far is the table of contents. He is appropriately divided up the book into Poker Conepts, Limit Hold'Em Concepts and Advanced Concepts. He also touches on aspects which I have found underrepresented in other books such as psychology, deception, slowplaying and even things such as guidlines to play poker for a living. Furthermore, it is not dry reading. Some books of this genre tend to be really hard to get into/not count cracks in the wall while you are reading it, this book is holding my impatient attention well. (Aesthetically, the book looks great. It's sleek, modern and just nice to look at.)
I will post final review when I finish the book, I just wanted to comment on some of the errors.
Worth it just for the shorthand info.......2005-12-24
While alot of this book is about the basics it still have alot of good information. The Short-Handed section is worth the $10 all by itself.
It only goes to 1, I'd give this a Zero.......2005-12-21
An aweful book from an arrogant, obnoxious 'professional' poker player. Expect to see it at the buck a book store soon. Personally, mine works well to balance my coffee table.
Book Description
Offers a first look at the all-Arab news network and its controversial role in the Arab world.
Al-Jazeera, the independent, all-Arab television news network based in Qatar, has emerged as ambassador to the Arab world in the events following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, and the war waged in Afghanistan. More than a channel reporting the news as it happens, Al-Jazeera (Arabic for "the peninsula") has access to the Arab world and is "scooping" the western media conglomerates. It has emerged as an international relations actor on the world stage with its exclusive access to Osama bin Laden and members of the Taliban. Its reputation has been burnishing quickly through its daily exposure on CNN in the U.S., even as it strives to maintain its independence as an international free press news network. Al-Jazeera sheds light on the background of the Al-Jazeera network, how it started, how it operates, the kinds of programs it broadcasts, its effects on Arab viewers, the reactions of the West and Arab states, its implications for the future of news broadcasting in the Middle East, and its struggle for a free press and public opinion in the Arab world.
Customer Reviews:
Very insightful.......2007-06-27
This book sheds light unto a very controversial subject- Al-Jazeera. It shows the history and financing of the station. It also, shows how this station has united, to a degree, the Arab world. In total, the material is factual and intrusive- just as a news channel should be.
Can an Arab writer pen anything about Al-Jazeera and still claim to be objective?.......2007-02-26
Yeah I know, incendiary title...but it certainly *does* get you reading my review, eh?
Frankly, I don't believe the word "objective" even comes into play when describing the push/pull affairs of the contentious Levant. It's amusing to observe the legions of Westerners and Europeans who have often never (or once) set foot in the region, willy-nilly casting opinions on the internal affairs of the countries of the region. They don't reside in these countries, and aren't compelled to live the day to day controversies. It beggars the question if they've even got the right to cast an opinion.
I know, I know, I realize there are going to be hundreds of people who claim that the now-globalized effects of terrorism have changed the rules of the game. Ever since terrorists began to take their road show international, there will always be those who claim that because of the aftereffects they suffer far from the MidEast, that they've got a say.
You know what I say? B.S.!
Of course, the cat's already out of the bag and that past-his-prime Jaysus-lovin' Jimmy C. seems to think that it's his God-appointed duty to inform every last one of us (the uninformed "us," in other words) about the "apartheid" (quotes intentional) in effect in the Land of Israel. Like I've said in other places and in other Reviews, who in that same deity's name appointed the former President spokesperon for the so-called Palestinian Arabs?
Anyways, compared to Hugh Miles book of a similar title, I'm less than inclined to go along with the musings of these two otherwise highly competent scribes and academics. Miles, I believe it can be said, might have had a bit of the old Jack Philby-esque Arabism nestled deep within his ticker. Though he still managed to pull off a nice piece of work in his overview of the Qatari news sensation. If you don't know what I'm talking about, do an Amazon search for "Al Jazeera, Miles" in the search field, and feast your eyes on some nice reviews.
In the case of El-Nawawy and his Canadian cohort Iskandar, howver, the proverbial jury is still out as to what their agenda might be. I don't know these guys, and they haven't proven their bona fides to me enough for me to go "objective" on 'em. Yeah, yeah, I even heard them over a couple of podcasts, casting stones and trading jibes with Miles and the podcast's host. They can talk a mean stick, that's for sure...but I dunno...
Am I profiling and being potentially libellous and prejudicial vis-a-vis these two authors?
I doubt it.
The two aforementioned authors of the present book certainly had to expect the sort of accusation I (and a host of others, I'm sure) am now levelling against them--par for the course, considering who's writing this book (read: check out the surnames and admitted [in the authors' own words] pedigrees, folks). Two gentlemen of clear Arabic heritage. Where do their sympathies lie, I want to know?
On the one had, you've got a relatively decent and objective overview of how Al-Jazeera functions. They go into the who's-who of who's paying the bills (the Qatari royal family, the emir in other words), where the bulk of its employees hail from (the former BBC Arab channel), and examples of the incendiary sorts of programming which are to be found on its airwaves.
On the other hand, the authors hint at where their loyalties lie. Their clear use of controversial terminologies in reference to certain parcels of land in the Middle East and peoples, and what's more, their lack of a clear-cut censure of some of the more repressive policies of the Qatari government (regime), for example, and bestowing heapful praise upon the sometimes brazeness of Al-Jazeera is a bit akin to being taken on a roller-coaster ride. Where should I stand as a reader? How should I feel about Qatar, as a nation and a culture, when the authors themselves place it on a pedestal in diametric opposition to this bastion of free speech, this Arab "phenomenon" known as the first "free" and "fair" media channel in the Middle East and the Gulf? After completing the book, I'm not sure what to believe anymore.
That makes two books now that I've read on the channel, and believe me I'm going to be on the lookout for the equalizer (three times lucky?). My hunch is that someone who doesn't have clear and declared Arabist leanings or tendencies isn't going to get a near shot at the contacts that Miles and present scribes did (not to mention Jehane Noujaim's CONTROL ROOM (2004), and the unbelievable access which she had). An Israeli journalist, or a any other Jewish journalist who isn't in an ambiguous no man's land such as Al Jazeera English anchorman Dave Marash appears to be on the surface, wouldn't have this kind of access. Believe me, they wouldn't! Putting a few token Israelis or Israeli government spokespeople on the Al Jazeera airwaves is a dubious exercise, at best. While it might seem to the rest of the TV-viewing world as if this is some sort of "fair treatment" approach--this side, and the other side, as the slogan goes--I still am not convinced that this is nothing more than window dressing.
Worth a read, but them thar's an agenda afoot here, folks. Just go at it with an open mind, and try not to be too heavily swayed.
--ADM in Prague
Very readable and informative.......2006-08-23
I've reread parts of this book several times and assigned it to U.S. college students too. If the Al-Jazeera TV network is influential, shouldn't we want to learn more about it? It's narrow-minded to think that all Arab people think it's a great network -- they don't. And it's a matter of ignorance to think that the network as a whole approves of everything that every Arab person does, good or bad.
By reading this book, you'll find out how the network was set up, how it was funded, where it is based, who its journalists are, what programming it broadcasts (it's more than only news -- just like the BBC), and what Arabs say against it -- as well as what Westerners and non-Arabs criticize about its programming and its decisions.
For example, does Al-Jazeera go soft on Qatar because of its primary funding source? Another example: Do some Arabs think that Al-Jazeera is really a pawn of Western governments because it broadcasts interviews with Israeli officials? The book addresses these questions and more.
Al-Jazeera/CNN.....Same ole same ole.......2005-05-07
The two most slanted news organizations on our planet.
Don't forget CNN had their own Baghdad bureau before the war.
The only people recommending this book are al-Qaida supporters.
Sad, but true.
Fair and well-researched.......2005-03-28
This books heaps a lot of praise on the network, but is also critical of it (as an example the author discusses Al Jazeera's lack of coverage of Qatar-Bahrain tensions). You get a view from inside and outside the network, a look at it's founding and how the networks covers issues differently than Canadian and American news organizations.
One reason in particular for reading this book is that you will get to see a side of the network that you wouldn't normally see in North America. I say this because Al Jazeera is much maligned in these parts. Consider that the CRTC (Canada's FCC) has placed unreasonably strict conditions on cable companies who wish to carry the Al Jazeera news channel- no other news network is subject to such ridiculous treatment. The fear seems to be that Al Jazeera inspires hate and incites violence. Contrast this with the easy approval, without such restrictions, that FOX news received to broadcast here. If you don't feel outraged at the CRTC's hypocrisy, then you really should read this book (and at least a few others).

Book Description
This global report on the questions of public service broadcasting examines the situation of public broadcasting worldwide in a number of different contexts and from a variety of thematic perspectives. Various contributors look at how, despite the current turbulence affecting national broadcast systems everywhere, the idea of broadcasting as public service continues to inspire creators, producers, programmers, and policymakers.
Book Description
New technologies and services have created explosive demand for radio spectrum, which is outstripping supply. Fortunately, these same technologies can provide the solution. More intensive use would meet existing and potential demand and could be the basis for unprecedented economic growth.
