Kiki's Paris: Artists and Lovers 1900-1930 presents a delightful evocation of the life of Alice Prin, or Kiki, and her generation in Paris--from her favorite cafés and the cramped artists' studios where she modeled to her relationships with so many of the great artists of the period. The historical and personal details culled from books, memoirs, and letters alone would constitute a fabulous biography; with the photographs--more than 650--the book is transformed into a work of art in its own right. Publisher's Weekly raves, "Kiki ... was outrageous, charming, beautiful, talented--and so is the Paris that emerges. We see ... Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Man Ray, Stein, Léger, Cocteau, Brancusi, Soutine and hundreds of others...." Kiki's Paris is a paean to the heady blossoming of an era and the height of the artists' community in Montparnasse, vividly woven from the fragile strands of time. It is impossible to walk away from this book unaffected: even Paris-phobes will swoon under the influence of such intoxicating nostalgia. --Jhana Bach

Wonderful........2006-07-04
A time long gone of the parisian model for the teeming artists. Lots of great photo's and listings of the people of that time period. Puts you " there " as soon as you open the book. A timeless book of a wonderful age.
It truly was Kiki's Paris.......2006-01-15
This book gives a wonderful photo journal insight into the free-spirited years of early 20th century Paris. The photos and descriptions are magnificent. This book will take you there in an instant.
A PAEAN TO HALCYON DAYS.......2004-07-30
"KIKI'S PARIS: Artist and Lovers 1900-1930" faithfully evokes the era when Paris served as the nexus for the flowering of artistic movements as diverse as cubism, fauvism, futurism, and dadaism. Each photograph tells a rich story of the personalities and the city that shaped and inspired them.
This is a book that you'll want to read and re-read again and again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
A good social history.......2004-04-21
This book gives both an excellent pictorial and verbal description of the evolution of the artistic life in bohemian Paris in the early twentieth century. Well researched and written, it brings the ongoing revolution in art (what defines art?) as well as society (the role of classes, women, etc) into both clear focus and understanding. The pictures are both numerous and superb and gives the book a real 'you are there' sense as well. The wealth of detail is sometimes almost overwhelming in fact. An very readable and enjoyable book!!
Queen of the Left Bank Artists Quarter.......1998-07-07
The quarter mile of the Left bank in the early 1920s is what Marcel Duchamp called, "The first really international colony of artist we ever had". This book contains thousands of photographs of the Montparnasse in the 1920s. It's an excellent resource if you are researching Man Ray, Calder, Duchamp, Matisse, Hemingway, Picasso or Stravinsky. Alice Prin or Kiki, was the queen of the artists' quarter. She had a beautiful body and a fine voice. She was the Man Ray's lover and modeled for many Left Bank artists. The book adds the human side of the times, and the art that was made in them. I would recommend this book to any working artist or collector.

Amazing images.......2005-06-27
Absolutely stunning images. Beautifully printed. Color and black and white prints with full descriptions. A beautiful fold out of Amithaba and his holy retinue, full singing band and all, descending to receive the souls of the dead. No wonder these are national treaures. Despite these being copies, the quality of the copies is masterful and I really can't say enough about this book. Received it as a gift and am very grateful. It seems to be very rare and if you come across a copy I really recommend picking it up. Some of the images have a fairly psychadelic quality to them, both in color and in their wonderful intricacy. The original artists had either profound realization or a profound imagination. Pretty fancy stuff. Pretty moving too. OK... Im going to stop gushing now but I really wish this book would get reprinted.

"Scoring" is a witty and wiley visual journey.......1999-01-30
Without seeing the contents of this delightful book you might be inclined to think the subject of gravestones and cemetery markers a bit morbid. Happy to report, it is humorous, insightful, and most of all very upbeat. The cemetery monuments which most intrigue photographers Bunnen and Smith are those which give us an insight into the people whose lives they summarize. There are bowlers (the title of the book refers to an avid bowler who couldn't resist featuring his favorite passtime on his tombstone), booze lovers, mystics and motorcyclists. There are cowboys and klansmen, soldiers and surfers. The range of treatments is so astonishing, so upbeat, such fun, that the reader (well, the traveler/viewer--the book is almost all photographs) cannot help but begin thinking of his or her own funerary arrangements in a whole new light. The the real subject of this collection is one of vitality, personal expression, and hope of a heaven in which the people and activities we loved in life will be ours forever. If you like visual books, I urge you to track down a copy of this tome and share it with your friends.

Trippy, Surreal Goodness.......2005-07-16
Mostly wordless, these short tales consist of odd creatures moving and existing in surreal landscapes. They are oddly both comforting and disturbng, and in their own inhuman way speak to the human condition through the lens of the cutely grotesque. The cartoons remind me somewhat of the Jim Woodring's Frank, though Brinkman's beings are less identifyable than Woodring's cartoon characters, and thus more of a blank slate upon which we the readers can project our own fears and yearnings. Published by the now-sadly-defunct Highwater Books, Teratoid Heights is a prime example of why that publisher will be missed.
Book Description
This approach, honed after years of on-set experience and from teaching at UCLA, NYU, and Columbia, and endorsed by many in the industry, including director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and producer/actor Edward Asner, aims to provide a helpful reference and resource for directors and actors alike. It combines underlying theory with dozens of exercises designed to reveal the actors craft. There is material on constructing the throughline; analyzing the script; character needs; the casting and rehearsal processes; film vs. theater procedures as well as the actor and the camera. Distilling difficult concepts and a complex task to their simplest form, the author explains how to accurately capture and portray human behavior. The author's discussion of creative problems she has encountered or anticipated after years of experience, and her suggested solutions and exercises, are immediately useful. Additionally, hear what the actors have to say in excerpts from interviews with such acclaimed actors as Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Glenn Close, Robert Redford, Christopher Walken, Julianne Moore, and Michael Douglas (to name a few) who discuss their work with directors, what inspires them, and what they really want from the director.
* A well-known director and coach shares her secrets on getting great performances from actors
* Hands on; loaded with exercises
* Relevant to film, TV, and theater directors
* Foreword written by Ang Lee, Oscar-winning director of Brokeback Mountain and a student of DeKoven's

Outstanding Teacher.......2006-11-05
I haven't gotten a copy of the book yet, and won't until I return to the US in February 2007.
I did, however, study directing actors with Lenore Dekoven, and Lenore was such a lucid, wise teacher than I wholeheartedly recommend the book sight-unseen.
Lenore's approach to directing actors may seem counter-intuitive or even rigid at first, but it's actually very flexible. Keep in mind it's an approach to constructing a framework from which to work, and once you've broken down a script and start actually directing it, you'll ultimately still have to rely on your own eyes and brain to determine whether you are communicating effectively with your actor(s).
Finally a book that simply illustrates the hardest part of directing!.......2006-04-10
I have been a filmmaker for over ten years, directing my own films as well as working as an assistant director on numerous indie productions during that period, and I have to say that anyone who is remotely interested in directing and filmmmaking must read this book.
Both from my own experience, and from my close observation of directors I have assisted in the past, there is no doubt that directing actors is the most challenging aspect in the panoply of arduous tasks that await the film director. Some shy away from it, hiding behind the monitor, some stumble through it hoping to arrive at a performance through trial and error, but very, very few actually know how to constructively and efficiently collaborate with actors to create truthful and compelling performances. I think it's because, unlike the creative process of writing a script or generating shot-lists and storyboards, actors are mutable, unpredictable - in a word, human - and somewhat like jazz improvisation, you can't completely plan the performances in a film. Instead, you are forced to observe them develop organically in real time and respond immediately. That's difficult, and the problem is most directors (even seasoned veterans) just don't know how to talk to actors - they don't speak a language that is useful to them. This is where DeKoven's book is immensely valuable and, in my experince, unique.
It provides a real step-by-step approach to learning a new language, which enables the director to give the actor a point of departure for a performance, and allows them to quickly communicate adjustments as that performance evolves. Although the process it describes is very complex, the writin is clear and the approach is very accessible. From the director's preparatory work (what DeKoven calls the throughline), to the on-set collaboration with all creative partners (not just actors), there is no part of a director's craft that will not be enhanced by exposure to this method. This book has filled a gap that I had hitherto been unable to fill in my library of fundamental texts for any filmmaker (you know the rest: Story, Impro etc.), and is a must-have for any filmmaker's toolbox.
Dynamic and Practical!.......2006-04-04
Lenore DeKoven's book on directing should be required reading for all directors. She preaches a straight forward and artistically rewarding process. Her book gives us all access to this process in a clear, concise way. As a director, you can really use her process as a shorthand to get the results you want from your actors, designers, your entire team. Stop reading this review and start reading the book! You won't regret it!
The Right Direction.......2006-03-25
Lenore DeKoven, doyenne of Columbia University's graduate film department has here, in "Changing Directions," documented the pragmatic approach to film direction that she has passed onto generations of film students. This year's Best Director, Ang Lee, figures prominently amongst her many successful disciples and he has provided a rather inspiring introduction to both the book and to the challenges of film directing.
Suffice it to say, this work is essential reading and reference for the dedicated filmmaker and it belongs on the shelf alongside other nuts-and-bolts film books like Robert McKee's "Story" and Mascelli's "The Five C's of Cinematography."
Written in no-nonsense prose, DeKoven teaches a directorial process that begins by articulating a "through-line" - a concise statement that captures a director's interpretation of the script. These critical 'one-or-two-sentences' serve as a reference point against which all the subsequent production decisions can be made, from design to casting. She then takes you onto the set and details how the director translates the "through-line" into language that will help the actors build their performances. DeKoven's best text is saved for a thorough and practical discussion of this relationship between actor and director.
The best, most useful, least mysterious book on directing I have ever read.
Book Description
This lively blast from the past peels back the many layers of the Top 40 phenomenon: the DJs, fans, singles, jingles, dedications, contests, requests and more. The book features interviews with such renowned radio personalities and programmers as Casey Kasem, Dick Clark, Wolfman Jack, "Cousin Brucie" Morrow, Gary Owens and many others, and includes an exclusive CD with "airchecks" - rare recordings from 16 legendary DJs on actual Top 40 broadcasts - so that readers can hear the crazed, creative and compelling voices that made Top 40 so memorable. Also includes lots of fantastic black-and-white photos to help readers put faces to the voices they know so well, a bibliography and index, and a special Top of the Pops section featuring the Number One records of Top 40 radio from 1957 through 1997 as calculated by the staff of Gavin.

A Snoozer.......2003-02-24
More like an encyclodia I could not really follow it inspite of my long term interest in radio.
If you like baseball cards..........2002-10-28
Ok, so I'm the party pooper here, but I'm not enjoying this book (still reading). What bother me about it is it's tunnel-vision focus on DJs (names, dates, station IDs etc.) while zilch on the music (how tunes were selected, politics, label preferences, payola, etc.). I'm personally curious why Top 40 has changed from period to period and how decisions were made behind the scenes out of hearing range of the listening audience. Telling us things like "Bill Balance, who had been at KFWB for three years when Blore blasted in to install the Top 40 format in late 1957" doesn't even pretend to discuss the kind of details I'm interested in. The publishers would have been more truthful if they'd named the book something like "The People Who Played the Hits." Also disappointing to me because I've read many Fong-Torres articles over the years that I've thoroughly enjoyed. If I change my mind as I read on, I'll revise or append this review.
This book is still a hit.......2002-06-30
Ben Fong Torres' love and admiration for the early days of Top 40 radio shows through in this book. He has crafted a wonderful history of how Top 40 began, features on numerous radio personalities (among them Tom Donahue, B Mitch Reed, Robert W Morgan, The Real Don Steele, Alan Freed, Dick Biondi, the list goes on and on). And the CD included with the book featuring airchecks of some of these amazing personalities is wild. Hearing DJ's like Gary Owens, B Mitch Reed, Casey Kasem or Tom Donahue in their early days is a hoot.
If the book has a West Coast slant on personalities, perhaps that's only because Torres grew up in the Bay Area. However, he does not give short shrift to anyone. He also goes into great detail about the people who helped create this format: Chuck Blore of "Color Radio" fame, Bill Drake and Ron Jacobs of "Boss Radio" fame, Gordon McLendon and Tod Storz, among others. It's ironic in a way that Torres' claim to fame came later as first a journalist for Rolling Stone and as a DJ on KSAN in San Francisco (one of those "underground" FM stations that loved to poke fun at the Top 40 stations).
The book traces the beginnings, development, and "growing pains" of this format. How at one time it was hip, then became "square" when the underground FM stations hit the airwaves, and how it now seems to have emerged again. And funny how the underground stations developed as a kind of "antidote" to very restrictive Top 40 formats, just as the Top 40 stations developed as something different to the standard fare of that time.
Amazing stories abound in this book, and being an ex DJ myself I could relate to them. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I agree with another reviewer that this book is must reading for any past or present DJ, or any student of the media.
My wife liked this book.......2002-06-21
I bought this for my wife. She really enjoyed it.
Definitive Chronicle Of The Top 40 Era on Radio.......1999-11-28
As an alumnus of a McLendon station, KELP, El Paso, Ben's book brought back the memories of decades past. Seriously researched and accurate, this is THE book of what TOP 40 was, who invented it, why it was a huge success and what happened to the stations and people who were involved. A "must read" for anyone who ever worked in radio or has an interest in the media. Also, it's great fun!
