My review.......2007-01-11
This is a small very big book, shows how the sintesis of a graphic can be clear and great.
Yikes! Overrated!.......2006-08-01
From some of the other reviews and the book description, you might get the idea that this book is chock full of information. Not so! Aside from the intro, you'll be hard-pressed to find even a single sentence on a page. The second section which is 'dedicated' to showing how to create a great icon is a joke. The information provided is either too basic (a spread showing you what the tools in freehand are for) or grossly underdeveloped (ah, I see, so you use perspective...now I GET IT!) Section three is chock full of the firm's vector icons and logos and is the most rewarding part of the book.
Anyway, this a quirky, short and small book. It is fun to flip through and is bound to provide some inspiration the next time you need to create an icon, but as an instructive tool it falls short in most areas.
Icons and Logos are made of vector shapes.......2004-10-14
This book illustrates the basic concepts of creating a successful icon or logo (a shape with a visual message). Icons/Logos are created by combining and subtracting positive and negative space using vector shapes (shapes drawn in a vector illustration package such as Adobe Illustrator). It is also printed in red and black only, illustrating that a message can be carried across by simply using a shape, instead of lustrous colours. It is extremely handy book and the authors come to the point to brainstorming, designing and creating effective logos and icons from scratch. It also showcases their abilities and skills. The book speaks of its title; "vector shapes with a message".
inspiring.......2002-03-20
the first part of the book displays some examples of the icon and logo work they have done. the second part gives insight on the process of creating the "perfect logo." the third is a library of work they have done for clients.
from beginning to end, the book inspires and also simplifies the icon and logo creation thought process for me. it's a great book with great examples of 2d icon and logo work.
inspiring.......2002-03-20
the book is broken down in 3 sections. the first section is a display of some logos and icons. the second being an insight into how they create a perfect icon. the third is a library of logos and icons created for clients.
from beginning to end, the book inspires and really simplifies the creation of 2d icons and logos for me.
great book.

Mediocre at best.......2004-05-31
If you're looking for in-depth advice on how to take better nudes, this is not the book for you. Setups are glossed over, photo's are average, and book production was terrible.
In the copy I received, around 15 pages were duplicated, and corresponding pages were missing.
Book Description
Mike Crawley's Photographing the Nude is a thoroughly practical and inspiring guide for photographers of all levels. It begins by teaching a number of basic skills key to developing a sound understanding of the art--nude photography shares many of the same technical problems as other areas of portraiture.
Crawley demonstrates a wide range of classic lighting techniques, from soft diffuse lighting for a romantic mood to direct lighting that emphasizes the contours and musculature of the body. Knowing what poses are good for figure work is also essential. To that end, specially commissioned photographic sequences demonstrate the dos and don'ts.
Readers will also find information on taking more creative shots such as semi-abstracts, and technical challenges such as infra-red prints and digital manipulations. Chapters on darkroom and digital know-how form the final invaluable section.
Mike Crawley is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. He exhibits his work in the UK and Europe, including the prestigious Austrian International Salon, and last year won the George Eastman medal in the Kodak International Salon of Photography.

A real disappointment.......2001-07-03
As an amateur photographer, interested in the black and white nude this was one of my first purchases. It was a real disappointment to say the least. The images in the book are technically well done but I continue to ask myself, "why are these people nude?" For me the images say nothing about the models nor does the interaction of shadow and highlight move me.
Interesting look at the human form via infrared film.......1999-05-04
This is a fairly traditional photgraphy instruction book. The photographs are presented in a gallery format in the front of the book. The second half shows them as a contact sheet with the technical notes added. Fairly comprehensive look at body makeup and lighting. This book strives to be artistic first and educational latter. Ms. Khornak is quite skillful in the art of photography. The infrared images are beautiful. As an educational tool, the format does not really work. Perhaps it would be more educational to have the technical details directly following each image.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A great book for Beginners........2003-02-22
I have noticed that the people that have reviewed this book did not give it very good reviews. But I think I know why. Well for one, one of the guys thought it was an art book, when it is obviously an instrutional book.
Before I go any further, I would like to emphasize that this is a BEGINNERS book. If you are looking for advanced techniques on photographing the nude, you may not like this book. As for me, I found it very helpful. As I am a beginner in nude photography.
The author does not go into much detail about each subject, but gives enough information to help out well. Plus, i find that part of the fun of photography is exploring, and we dont want all the fun spelled out for us.
The author goes step by step through the different kinds of nude photography. I have to say that the models are not very attractive, but that is a part of the beauty of photography. We are not looking to make playboy models here. For me, I am into black and white, so I was able to skip through much of the book to the parts where I was interested in. I also prefer real sunlight rather than artifitial light. This was an area of the book that helped me a lot. You are shown different views of models and how the light effects them. Also, the diffence in sunlight and lamp light. And trust me, there is a very big difference.
All and all, this book was a good buy for me. I am glad that I purchased it. I dont plan to read it and follow it as a photography bible, but there are some helpful tips that are nice.
Again, I will say that this book may not be for experienced photographers and is not an art book. But to help all of us amatuers out and to show us what we need to know.
not an art book.......2000-12-30
this book is not a book of art to look at, rather it is more of an instructional book, how to photograph nudes. though i don't think that these principles apply just to nudes, you could use them on any portriature. hedgecoe really has the basics down. the problem with the book, why i only gave it a three, is that the examples he uses are not very good pictures. i've never seen any of his other work, so i don't know what kind of photographer he is, but my understanding is that he can create better images that was shown in this book (in fact, many of the pictures look like leftovers from his work done in the late 70s early 80s). also, many of the techniques he describes are ones any photographer should know about, or at least any photographer who isn't just starting out. and a beginning photographer shouldn't try to take on nudes until they have a little experience under their belt. the final problem with the book is hedgecoe's apparent surprise at using computer imaging. it almost feels like he has just discovered the digital camera and photoshop.
it's not a horrible book, but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't a beginner.
Don't bother.......1999-10-04
What a disappointment. This book contains very little that specifically relates to nude photography and nothing about glamor. It's a mediocre photo book. Most of the pics aren't even very good. This book doesn't come close to matching the quality of the author's other books I've seen.

Customer Reviews:
Technically interesting, visually terrible.........2004-09-08
Pros: Valuable informations and techniques. His approach to nude photography is enriching and motivating. Very soft and almost spiritual use of the naked body.
Cons: The pictures in this book are totally outdated (70's type), grainy and poorly printed. Few models are interesting and I personally don't like John's work. The technical info only refer to film cameras. Needs some serious update.
EXCELLENT!!!.......2003-01-22
Probably one of the best books I own. Very informative and detailed. Well illustrated. Teaches you what to look for in a picture. Gives you an idea of what you are trying to capture and how. If you are looking for a "how-to" book, then this is one of the best. Definitely a must have.
The "Pocket" Reference for Photographing the Nude.......2001-12-09
John Hedgecoe has provided many photographers (including me) with uncountable reference books on learning photography for many years. In fact, considering I had his volume on Basic Photography almost 25 years ago, he's a premier contributor to photographic education. "Photographing the Nude" continues his excellent and very in-depth style of covering a subject. As an idea and posing guide alone it's well worth the (very affordable) price. The only small criticism is that he has pulled the images from those same 25 years I've been following him. Some are dated and have the stale, British "Page Three" look. Easy to overlook considering the value elsewhere!
Brilliant work by a brilliant photographer.......2001-06-22
All in color! Capture the sensuality of the human form--male and female, alone and in couples--in artistic photographs. With expert photographer and best-selling author John Hedgecoe as your guide, you can master this difficult subject. More than 300 photographs in both color and black-and-white fire the imagination and illustrate Hedgecoe's practical advice. Explore Finally!! There are many nude books out there, but very few of them actually "teach" you how to photograph "the Nude."
Hedgecoe, bestselling photography author of many books, discusses all aspects of shooting indoors, including posing a model, lighting, choosing film, and selecting props and accessories. He also discusses outdoor shots, but most Nudes are traditionally shot indoors. (Try to find a model willing to pose in the middle of Central Park!)
This book teachs and helps you create *your own* style using unusual viewpoints, reflections, soft-focus effects, texture, and more. Also discussed is the use of special effects (body painting), depth of field, and computer images.
This is a must have for the aspiring photographer.

Book Description
"I find John's critical writing immensely entertaining even when I'm not in agreement... He has the gift, such a rare one, of being able to analyze the work in question, to be able to say why it is that it's so powerful, so touching; or, on the other hand, so trite, so meretricious, or so banal... I find his reviews full of insights and perceptions that make reading a collection of this sort as exciting as reading a gripping novel. John's wit is dazzling and is never displayed for its own sake, but to drive home an aspect of the review... It was exciting for me to read through this collection and see such warm praise for so many films that I feel have been unjustly ignored." -Bruce Beresford
Customer Reviews:
John Simon, Unplugged and Mellowed........2006-12-25
Yes, he's calmed down. His last collection of reviews, "Reverse Angle," appeared in 1982. I remember the NY Times critic saying that by his reckoning, out of the two hundred or so films, Simon could bring himself to recommend only about fifteen.
He's far more generous here. Even movies that I myself thought were little more than commercial trash earn his endorsement. And there is less of his quirky word play.
I've waited for twenty-four years for this volume to appear and I can't say I'm at all disappointed. Simon is a responsible professional and a reader always learns something from him, even if it is only the meaning of words like "condign" and "pleonastic." His latinate prose with its parenthetical inserts rolls informatively along.
I don't know exactly how to feel about his newly opened mind. I kind of enjoyed the Simon that described Barbra Streisand's nose as "a ziggurat of meat" and argued for the similarity between Liza Minelli's face and a turnip. I was always amused by the Loathesome Simon, the guy who said on national television that Andrew Sarris was insane, the guy whose head was decorated with a plate of pasta in The Ginger Man restaurant by Sylvia Miles, an actress he had insulted.
He's firm in his judgments here, but not loathesome anymore. The approach is more even-handed. Movie people who would have been mercilessly skewered a quarter of a century ago are now treated politely. I kind of like it although, as I say, I also kind of miss the hilarious venom.
I'm glad I bought this book and you probably will be too, although you might be surprised a little by it.
A talented writer who's wrong more often than right..........2006-08-07
Reading John Simon's latest compilation of film reviews begs the question, does one have to be "right" to be a great critic or can simply writing cleverly and rigorously in defense of a basically incorrect critical assessment suffice? What I have always admired about Mr. Simon is his unflappable way of sticking to his own view irregardless of the popular/critical consensus surrounding him. Yet Stanley Kauffmann tended to give negative notices to many of the same films as Simon while writing more sympathetically, insightfully and fairly about the works, so where does that leave Simon? Out in the cold I'm afraid. Reading this latest Simon book is exasperating as he snootily dismisses one great film after another (Au Revoir Les Enfants, Saving Private Ryan, etc.) I finally came to the consensus that however good a writer he is, he is simply too far off the critical mark...too often.
Simon has a famous reputation for been gratuitously nasty toward female actresses whom he doesn't care for the looks of and that continues in this collection. As another reviewer notes, this latest collection also appears to solidify his reputation for being a homophobe too. Going all the way back to his review of Zefferelli's Romeo and Juliet in 1968 (where he accuses the director of being a [...] because of the nude love scenes) to his recent review of My Own Private Idaho which he quickly dismisses as a "homosexual fantasy" his reviews have had a nasty homophobic edge to them, something Stanley Kauffmann, Pauline Kael or Roger Ebert's writings have never had. And the fact that he liked Outrageous! (about a drag queen) back in 1978 and Savage Nights (about a bisexual HIV+ Frenchman) in the 1980's doesn't absolve him in my mind for all the nasty remarks he's voiced elsewhere over the years regarding "homosexuals" (he never uses the word gay, it's always "homosexuals".
Simon's writing is just as caustic and technically proficient as always (and he still loves providing untranslated foreign quotes) but all that effort is at the expense of all too often unappreciative and skewed critical views. For my money, the essential critics remain Pauline Kael, Roger Ebert, Stanley Kauffmann and David Thomson, soon to be joined by Anthony Lane of The New Yorker.
very smart but fundamentally mistaken.......2006-02-12
Mr. Simon is very smart. His reviews are very smart: well written, fairly well argued, and observant of detail. But for an intelligent person, Mr. Simon is not very smart about examining his own assumptions. His main mistake is that he assumes that movies should be evaluated as Art. As a result, he hardly likes anything, and he misses what movies DO have to offer because he wants them to offer something else. He should have learned something from Pauline Kael, who was just as sophisticated (although less intellectualized), but knew how to enjoy The Movies. There are rare movies that are also Art. They are special treasures that need appreciation, and their makers deserve special encouragement and esteem. But unless you are edified by reading endless and cheerless carping, beware this book. One last thing. Mr. Simon is homophobic. This is especially so because these reviews are, at most, only 25 years old, so they cannot be forgiven as period pieces. If Mr. Simon observed anyone taking his persistently dismissive and fusty tone toward any group of which Mr. Simon himself was a member, he would have no difficulty recognizing the prejudice. Not surprisingly, he's not so great about women, either.
Trenchant critical acumen; a heart that loves even the most emotional film, if it is done well. A genius of a Critic.......2005-10-25
Publishing so many of Simon's reviews is great. Hats off to the publisher. Its too bad it didn't include a few more of Simon's "bad" reviews, because I feel strongly that you learn more about the cinema when he is rebuking or castigating a film. Also, if it is a bad review, I can read the entire review, with the good ones that I haven't seen I must skip much of the review of a film because Simon gives away so much of the plot. I skim lightly a Simon review to see if it's negative or positive and if it's positive, I don't read it until I see the film.
Apart from that verbiage, Simon is a fabulous writer; he loves film as art (I would argue that film is per se entertainment, never art, except for a very, very few films and not Persona or Wild Strawberries by Bergman: e.g, The Dreamlife of Angels approaches art, as does The Wild Bunch (though Simon didn't like the film), Psycho (yes it is entertainment but it;s art all the same.) The shop around the corner 30' version; and 10 or 12 more.)
As for this book, it is a nurturing learning experience, not just about films, but about life and how filmakers perceive and approach life. You will learn how to watch films with a more understanding mind as you watch them, and not by giving up the entertainment component of movies. Simon likes to be entertained, just like all of us (see eg Analyze This) But he want more from a film--depth, authentic characters, serious attitude towards life; good acting; an honest and truthful depiction of what it is the filmaker is trying to say. His criteria for a good film is rigorous, but he likes a variety of films (not just h.e.a.v.y dramas: se Fried Green Tomatoes; Rich in Love; As good as it gets; driving miss daisy etc.) This an extraordinary book: the writing itself is a teaching lesson--when i was teaching high school for a few hears, I used his reviews as samples of what good non-fiction writing is.
A negative: I think, Simon should spend more time analyzing the scripts of the films, and less time praising cinematagrahers (sp?). I think, like most critics of film or theatre, he simply doesn't see how significant the screenplay is.
I disagree with several of his reviews; I read most of them at the time the films came out in National Review (although Simon is a moderate liberal and does not agree politically with the editors of N.R.: they still let him write whatever he wanted. He does despise cant and p.corrctness. It's too bad the publisher can't go back and publish comprehensively his reviews from the 60's and 70's where some came from The New Leader.
Anyway this is a hugely enjoyable book that has given me a long list of movies that I want to see, given Simon's recommendations are invariably golden and RIGHT-ON. Also, try his book on plays: he is even a better critic of live theatre, because he really has a passion for theatre that flows and rockets through his mind and heart, that he simply doesn't have for film. But he also loves film, even though he laments that most movies can't even reach the level of positive entertainment, let alone art.
I've waited 20 years for this book!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-27
John Simon is my all time favorite film critic and Reverse Angle was my favorite book of film criticism....until this one. 20 years of some of the best movies ever. Who better than Simon to disect them? Year after year I've waited for all these reviews to be put into a compilation and finally it happened. Thank you, Mr. Simon for your all the years of great reviews and for this very early, wonderful Christmas present.
Book Description
Has the global phenomenon that is Pop Idol ruined pop music, or is it just the natural evolution of a genre of music that has always been manufactured? From Tin Pan Alley to The Monkees, Bay City Rollers, Spice Girls, and boy bands, Bubblegum showcases the rise of Pop Idol and its many predecessors, in the process creating a witty, thorough history of what is arguably the most popular musical genre ever. This colorfully illustrated look at pop's manufactured mega-brands includes original interviews with the movers and shakers of the pop world.
Customer Reviews:
Svengalis all.......2005-08-01
I've been reading up on bubble-gum music and I found this to be one of the better books. It follows a chronological pattern and covers "prefab" music from the 1950s (not really Tin Pan Alley) through about 2002, treating it by decades. Especially interesting was the focus on managers who, realizing they had the formula down, would reinvent it in the next wave of music with a new band in a new style. The author also admits the fuzziness between "well-packaged" and "plastic," including a discussion of Beatles vs. Stones as nice boys/bad boys. The vignettes about individual stars and groups were useful to read in counterpoint to the narrative, but the layout meant every 4 paragraphs I was interrupting my train of thought to read about another band. The book is British (read "gigging" for "jobbing"), and as such is probably more balanced across the Atlantic than some American books on the subject, but it also means they make a few mistakes about American phenomena like understanding Toni Basil only in terms of the song "Micky" and omitting Davy Jones' pre-Monkees Broadway stint as the Artful Dodger in Oliver. The typos are pretty minimal for this sort of book, and the photos are great. The author's tone is generally pretty matter-of-fact about his subject in a "that's show-biz" sort of way: he only occasionally scoffs at a group or fawns over another one. Occasionally he is quite witty.

Of special interest are the super-sudoku puzzles in this book, they're definitely not for a coffee break: you'd better have a good block of time available to work them out!

Book Description
The early history of American settlement, pioneering, and independence is marked by fascinating characters and events who are often shrouded in legend. Through the eye of the movie camera, filmmakers have sought to capture these characters and to penetrate the mists of time. Films and television programs have been based on figures as diverse as Daniel Boone, Francis Marion, and Pocohantas, and events as disparate as the disappearance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Boston Tea Party, and the French and Indian War. This comprehensive filmography provides production information and commentary on all films and television episodes set during the years between the first settlements in the future United States and the fledgling country's War of 1812 with Britain. Films are arranged alphabetically, and a detailed introduction provides a thorough overview of the period, with references to films chronicling specific events. Photographs accompany many of the entries. Helpful for those interested in either film or in this particular period in history, the text is thoroughly indexed.
