Good Book.......2007-02-23
When I first got this book, I was a bit fooled by the thin size but it has a great store of information in the thin size. Highly recommended for anyone that wants to learn more about making bows, arrows, and equipment the old way
Native American Know How.......2007-01-11
This is a very detailed book on how to make authentic Native American Bows & Arrows, and it's very easy to understand.
Informative.......2005-08-25
Informative book, pretty deep insight into how NA bows and arrows were made, used, decorated, etc. Some good photos, descriptions, worth the money and read. I keep mine for reference, as it has loads of specific info in the book. Advanced bowyers would likely not like the book, folks who are just starting or want to learn the NA way that these things were done will like it.
Thank you for the criticism.......2003-01-27
I'm the author of the book, and appreciate the criticisms and praises. I *would* like to let folks know that I wrote this book when I was 19 years young, and had a lot to learn. I wrote it in response to a very bad, and misinformative book that was considered the 'bible' of indigenous archery books at the time. Now, there are many books available on this wonderful subject.
Jim Hamm's book, video, and classes are invaluable. So is TM Hamilton's book, and DC Waldorf as well.
Don't miss my "Voices of Native America" music book as well.
arrows are included !.......2002-10-03
The other title of the same author "making arrows the old way" has its text already fully printed within "making indian bows and arrows the old way". Amazon gave me a discount so I could get both titles at once, and I end up having twice the same text and pictures on arrows... Do not do like me, buy only this title, not the arrow one. Nice book by the way...

Eye Opener.......2007-03-09
This book really opened my eyes. I couldn't put it down for days. I'm still amazed by the high level of workmanship that the Native Americans achieved with these so-called "primitive" weapons. More amazing to me, however, is the realization that there are so many poor quality reproductions on the market...and thanks to this book, I am able to see them for what they are...."ugly" reproductions lacking the artistic, technological, and even spiritual aspects of the originals.
The second book is available (but not on Amazon...for some reason) and I have purchased that one also. It is even better than the first.
Overall, I think that books like this will lead to an appreciation of the art of Native American archery....and for those who think that pictures alone cannot give insights into the construction of these weapons, think again. Anyone who has advanced experience in both woodworking and archery will immediately appreciate this book.
My only question now is why books like this are so rare. Perhaps it is because we are caught up in the "engineering" of archery and not the "art" of archery. Perhaps these weapons are considered "inferior". Perhaps we don't care.....
Excellent reference.......2006-07-24
This is a very useful book for studying tribal or regional designs of bows. Most bows on the market have incorrect or nil provenance on the origin of the bow. This book gives the ethnologist some indication of common characteristics of bow design from the regions listed. If you are looking to build your own bow, Hamm (and others) have different works specifically written for would-be bowyers.
Where is Vol. II ??
From an arrow collector.......2002-05-18
This book, thanks to the very accurate drawings and precise indications (length, diameter, type of wood and fletching, colours indications) have enabled me to duplicate native American arrows with precision. I have often counterchecked the descriptions with some information I have found in museums and found the book very reliable. First pity, there aren't enough photos or colour drawings. Second and most catastrophic pity: why has the publisher apparently given up the idea of publishing the second volume about the Great plains, Columbia and Southwest?
One of a kind, at least for now.......2002-05-17
It is true that this book is not a how-to book, but I think that was the author's intention. What it is, is a much-needed reference work, indeed, it is the first and certainly most up-to-date record of American Indian archery equipment. It's been at least 50 years since a book of this sort has been published. My only objection is that the book does not (cannot?) provide enough context or provenance; this is a minor objection. Perhaps fans of Hamm would be more satisfied with Bows and Arrows of the Native Americans. I'd say the book is directed more towards the ethnographer or anthropologist; however, the book is clearly an invaluable reference for the traditional archer/bowyer (hey, this is a "living" hobby - be creative), as it provides dimensions, materials used, colors, and closeups of designs. Fans of American Indian art in gerneral will also appreciate it. Volume II, which should be available before the end of the year, should be at least as good.
A catalog of Native American Bows.......2001-12-31
I read the two previous reviews, so before buying I exactly knew what to expect.
I received my book a couple of days ago, I really liked it, at least for what it is, a kind of catalog of bows, perfectly drawn, with explanation of wood used, dimensions, and colours.
This on Tribe by Tribe basis.
I'll wait volume 2, about western and Plains Indians.
So, if you are really intrested in Native American bows, this is a book to buy, if you prefer something like a "how to", than the traditional Bowyer's bibles are more fit to what you want. Alberto

This is a book of Turner postcards with perforations -- so that you can send the postcards or keep them as a reference. At around 20 cents each (even less when I bought it) it seems like good value.

How do you write the biography of a cipher? That's the daunting challenge veteran Hollywood biographer Ed Sikov tackles in exploring the life of one of the 20th century's most acclaimed comic actors. Peter Sellers' uncanny talents as a mimic would inform everything from English radio's Goon Show and the highly profitable--if increasingly broad--cycle of Inspector Clouseau Pink Panther films to his brilliant turn as Chauncey Gardiner in Being There, a role that had all too many discomforting parallels to Sellers' own cryptic personality. Sikov reveals that the man long hailed as comedy's greatest chameleon was in fact a tragic, troubled personal vacuum, the only child of a literal stage mother who indulged his every whim, yet left him a distinct void for a soul. Sikov interviews many of the relatives, intimates, and survivors of Sellers that filled his alternately strange and spectacular life, while thoroughly chronicling every professional triumph and more than a few missteps. Sikov's straightforward reporting, seasoned by his own dry wit, details the parts that made up the man, but the sum remains an ever compelling enigma. As Lolita and Dr. Strangelove director Stanley Kubrick, no slouch in the personal riddle sweepstakes himself, once said of Sellers: "There is no such person." --Jerry McCulley
Book Description
eter Sellers' explosive talent made him a beloved figure in world cinema and continues to attract new audiences. With his darkly comic performances in Dr. Strangelove and Lolita and his outrageously funny appearances as Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther films, he became one of the most popular movie stars of his time. In this lively and exhaustively researched biography, Ed Sikov offers unique insight into Sellers' comedic style. Beginning with Sellers' lonely childhood dominated by a mother who wouldn't let go, through his service in the Royal Air Force, and his success on BBC Radio's The Goon Show, Sikov goes on to detail the actor's relationships with his family, costars, directors, and admirers-a portrait that is as comic and tragic as Peter Sellers himself.
Download Description
The first American biography of one of film's greatest comedians, MR. STRANGELOVE is the story of a screamingly funny, desperately unhappy soul-a man who thought he was empty. Sellers, who could mimic anyone and don any mask at will, was privately convinced that his personality had no core-that there was no personal substance under the put-on characters he so readily and hilariously assumed. "The Goon Show" made him famous; "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas" and "What's New, Pussycat?" turned him into a 60s flower-power icon that still resonates today. And yet Sellers, whose blistering improvisations could ruin takes by sending the casts and crews of his films into peals of uncontrollable laughter while the camera was running-remained confused and lonely, difficult to work with, volatile one minute and hopelessly lethargic the next.
Customer Reviews:
A Film Critic's Bio.......2006-04-15
Many of the other reviewers on this page complain that Sikov's book is stuffed with too many details on the movies and other show biz background and doesn't give enough on Sellers' personal life; others love the movie details and think Sikov gives just enough info on Sellers' mother and wives and kids and so on. The thing to remember, I think, is that Sikov is a film critic, not a psychologist. He writes what he knows, and he really does know film. His discussions of the often chaotic details of the development, production, marketing, and reviewing of the Sellers movies are in fact wonderful, if that's what you're mostly looking for in a biography of a movie star. I had the same reaction as another reviewer: his plot summaries and quotations from the movies made me want to go out and buy the DVDs.
If you're looking for the dirt, well, there's enough of it here for many readers, but Sikov isn't really interested in all the sordid details of Sellers' life, and it's easy to understand why some readers grew frustrated. Sikov tends to pass over the steamier moments of his story with a quick quotation from a friend of Sellers, or somebody he was working with at the time. The book you want if you're interested in the dirt is Roger Lewis's The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, on which Stephen Hopkins' 2004 movie starring Geoffrey Rush was based.
Lewis is also much more interested in psychoanalyzing Sellers than Sikov. I must admit that I would have liked to see a bit more of that in Sikov's book. How exactly did bad mothering make Sellers the depersonalized terror that he became? Sikov quotes a number of Sellers' friends as "diagnosing" him as "manic-depressive," but we never get any background for or comment on that claim; it's just something that several people say about Sellers. Once again: Sikov really isn't interested in such matters. He's interested in the performances, and uses stories about Sellers' personality or private life as occasional fillers to get us from one movie story to the next.
Another aspect of Sellers' life that doesn't particularly interest Sikov is money. We are told about Sellers' love of money, his need to be rich and to flaunt his wealth, and we do hear of his salary negotiations on many films; but in the seventies, before he and Blake Edwards get back together to start making Pink Panther movies again, he goes into a slump, makes six or seven dogs in a row, and Sikov tells us "the money was running out." Really? What does that mean, exactly? Shortly afterwards, we begin to hear that Sellers had to move around a lot, and eventually settled in Ireland, because of "tax difficulties"--what tax difficulties? Sikov never tells us; that just isn't interesting.
Still, if you love movies (and why would you be reading about Peter Sellers if you didn't?), and are endlessly fascinated by how movies get made, this is an excellent biography. Sikov's light touch, flawless journalistic style (which often borders wonderfully on the grotesque, as when he writes of Sellers' Chauncey Gardiner in Being There that "He is a mental earlobe trying to be a fin"), and cheerful cynicism about marriage, love, happiness, and so on give the reader a reassuring (I want to say MORAL) standpoint from which to view the miseries of Peter Sellers' life.
Too much career, not enough personal.......2005-12-02
I really enjoyed this book and I'm becoming a bigger and bigger Sellers fan. Being that I'm 20 everything I watch of his new to me. The book just really really yammered on about every movie and I mean EVERY movie he did. I could have taken a little more personal stuff; more stories of eratic behavior, drug taking, and sex. I got through it quick, but by the end it had worn itself out and I was ready for it to be over. I recomend watching the movie, "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" I really enjoy it.
Extremely Interesting, Will Permanently Change Your View.......2005-11-10
If all you know about Peter Sellers consists of what you've seen in his films, and you want to keep things that way, then stay away from this biography. It will permanently alter your regard for him, when after reading it you see him onscreen -- conceptually similar to the way you can't truly concentrate on a movie, any more, when Woody Allen or O.J. Simpson or (for wholly different reasons) Christopher Reeve appears. Sellers' childhood life, monstrously mismanaged by his mother, gave rise to both his immense talent and atrocious immaturity/impropriety as an adult. He comprehensively lived a child's life during his childhood, wholly unstructured and unorganized and undisciplined, propagating a glorious sense of fun, imagination and mimicry which formed the foundation of his adult career. Simultaneously, as the author points out, he never developed the "inhibitors" that prevent normal grown-ups from losing emotional control and/or unpredictably launching into violent behavior. Sellers' sporadically terrible behavior toward his first wife and children, were it to occur today and become public knowledge, would completely taint his career. He behaved abominably toward them and, objectively speaking, should have been brought to justice as an abusive husband and father.
This is a good bio to read, but be aware it will add another, and not too pleasant, layer to your thoughts about its subject.
A very insightful and sad look at a brilliant comic........2005-04-13
It's to bad that Mr. Sellers did not see himself the way many of us who watch his movies see him. To me, and many more, he was and is the king of physical humor and sight gags. His body movements were perfection and his delivery was always prefect. This book goes behind the camera and takes a look at the man himself and that look is not always a pretty one. He had many demons like drug addiction he was unfaithful many times, also he was a terrible father and he was by all accounts an *.*hole to everyone. But at times he could be very generous and caring. If you do not want your image of Sellers to be tarnished then you may not want to read this book, but if you are still curious about the man and his life then this is the book to read. It isn't always pretty, but it is very thorough and does not hold any punches. I still think he is the king of comedy.
The Real Face of Peter Sellers.......2004-11-17
What with a film about Sellers's life and work to be shown on HBO this Decemeber, it only seems right that I, as a confirmed Sellers-aholic, weigh in on one of the two major books written about the man behind the many masks (The titled work on which the film was based, I have yet to read).
Peter Sellers onscreen was a delight to behold, even in his most mediocre films. Peter Sellers offscreen could be a monster to those around him, but this was all part of his many moods. A man-child with no distinct personality of his own, he found himself only through the roles he took on (Dr. Strangelove, Inspector Clouseau, Chauncy the Gardener).
Ed Sikov's book, which I read about a year ago, recounts all the triumph and tragedy, angst and ecstasy, and the many contradictions of Sellers the man and movie star. It reads like a sympathetic but unbiased take on the man and his work. Sikov goes at great length to show not only the horrible things that Sellers did, but also the wonderful things he did on occasion (while tempering this with the knowledge that Sellers expected much in return). I doubt a more honest and yet tender portrait of the man could be written.
Sikov doesn't shy from Sellers's problems, but he offers some insight into why they might have come to be: a distant father, a needy mother, and relatives who indulged the young boy, all the way to his last wife's abuse of their estate in order to kill herself with drugs. Throughout it all, Sellers is the central figure around which madness unravels, and unravele him as well. You come away from it feeling pity for Sellers because of the circumstances which contributed to his madness, but mindful as well of the lives he touched (for good or bad) with his talent and ego.
You won't find yourself embracing Sellers when you finish the book, but you won't find yourself eager to rid him from your pantheon of comedy heroes either. Peter Sellers was a walking contradiction, and Ed Sikov does his best to expose the many faces Sellers showed not only to the world at large but to those he loved in particular. A man of such genius deserves no less than to have his story honestly rendered, and "Mr. Strangelove" does that exceptionally.

Book Description
Gene Lees, author of the highly acclaimed Singers and the Song, offers, in Meet Me at Jim and Andy's, another tightly integrated collection of essays about postwar American music. This time he focuses on major jazz instrumentalists and bandleaders. In a vivid series of portraits, Lees introduces the clientele of Jim and Andy's, one of the most popular New York musicians' haunts in the sixties. This unforgettable gallery of individualists included Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Art Farmer, Billy Taylor, Gerry Mulligan, and Paul Desmond among many others. Lees, himself a noted songwriter, writes about these musicians with vividness and intimacy. Far from being the inarticulate jazz musicians of legend, they turn out to be eloquent indeed as the inventors of a colorful slang that has passed into the American language.
Customer Reviews:
A fine book for all comers.......2005-09-12
I read "Meet Me at Jim and Andy's" a decade ago and still can enjoy now the joy it gave me then. I have just (September, 2005) looked up the book on Amazon to buy it for a friend and am surprised to see only a lone review of it, and that bestowing somewhat qualified praise. I was an editor for many years and am a teacher of writing. I would bet whatever reputation I have on my belief that every book Gene Lees has written is a gem and that this one is a masterpiece. Lees reports from the front lines of jazz on remarkable individuals who come alive in the reading. You do not need any great interest in jazz to be fascinated and moved by the writing. Lees has deep humanitarian insights, the gifts of a born storyteller and the prose of a poet. He has uncanny knowledge of his subject, the memory of an elephant and the respect of great numbers of practitioners in the varied realms of music. Necessary disclosure: I met Gene Lees early in the Nineties and we became friends. For years, living 3,000 miles apart, we have had only spasmodic communication. I don't believe this should disbar me from stating my conviction that this book, and others of Lees's award winning titles, will occupy a deserved and undying place in the history of music. Today they are an enlightenment and a joy for all.
Revealing Vignettes!.......2000-05-05
Jim and Andy's bar, located at 48th Street and 6th Avenue in New York, was a home, restaurant, answering service, employment agency, bank, storage place, and general hang-out for some of the 60's most famous jazz musicians, including Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Eddie Davis, Al Cohn, and Zoot Sims--with visits from Belafonte, Bennett, Horne, and Vaughan.
Here, the bar serves primarily as a backdrop for Lees' intimate conversations with musicians and observations on the idiom. Lee admonishes critics who question the status of jazz as a "serious" art form. The rest of the book, while somewhat overly-structured, includes chapters devoted to such icons as Woody Herman, Artie Shaw, Billy Taylor, and Art Farmer. The writing is uniformly lucid; the anecdotes humorous and illuminating.
While the book doesn't return to a satisfying coda to either Jim and Andy's (now closed) or the new hang-outs, Lee's first person narrative conveys a singular warmth and sympathy, radiant with his love of jazz.
Book Description
Seven-card stud is an extremely complex game. Deciding on exactly the right strategy in any particular situation can be very difficult. Perhaps this is why very few authors have attempted to analyze this game even though it is widely played. In 1989, the first edition of this text appeared. Many ideas, which were only known to a small, select group of players, were now made available to anyone who was striving to become an expert, and a major gap in the poker literature was closed. It is now a new century, and the authors have again moved the state of the art forward by adding over 100 pages of new material, including an extensive section on "loose games." Anyone who studies this text, is well disciplined, and gets the proper experience should become a significant winner. Some of the other ideas discussed in this 21st century edition include the cards that are out, the number of players in the pot, ante stealing, playing big pairs, playing little and medium pairs, playing three-flushes, playing three-straights, randomizing your play, fourth street, pairing your door card on fourth street, proper play on fifth, sixth, and seventh streets, defending against a possible ante steal, playing against a paired door card, scare card strategy, and buying a free card.

Fundamentally, the best Stud book ever written........2007-04-27
Unlike Hold 'Em, the general game-play complextion of stud has remained the same over the years, through the "poker boom". This book was written about 18 years ago yet it rings just as true today as it did the day it was printed.
The real beauty of this book is that it outlines a fundamental, winning strategy. It lays the perfect foundation for advancing your stud game the right way, as opposed to the "hard way". Many instructional books aren't much more than philosophy or abstract "advice"- not the case with 7CSFAP. This book tells you what you need to do and when you need to do it.
It is also careful not to be too rigid- it explains when there are times to deviate from what might otherwise be considered to be the "optimal" play.
One slight warning- this book has "For Advanced Players" in its title for a reason. While your typical poker nut won't have any problems comprehending it and putting it's great information to use, this is not the book you want to buy if you're just learning how to play stud.
Definite five star rating.
Tough going, but worth it.......2006-08-23
I've been at it for weeks and I'm still not all the way through this one. It's probably the hardest read I've encountered in over 20 poker books I own. The info is there... in GLORIOUS detail, but it's tough getting through it without brain paralysis at some point. They talk about playing all kinds of hands I'd rather just discard, especially in a low-limit game where many other players are loose.
Still the best.......2006-04-05
Thanks to the explosion of no limit hold-em it is becoming difficult, if not impossible, to find a seven card stud game -- even in Las Vegas! In Laughlin, you'll only find it at the Colorado Belle and then rarely more than one table. It's tough being the red-headed stepchild of poker. Still, if you're lucky enough to have a stud game in your local area, or you are an online player, purchasing this book is money well spent.
Sklansky is frequently criticized for having a dry writing style (and rightly so, I suppose) but he's one of the best poker authors because he has the ability to take sophisticated concepts and break them down in ways that are concise and easy to understand. In regards to the game of seven card stud, this book mimics his masterpiece, The Theory of Poker, in many ways. Of course you'll get the information on how to play the various betting rounds but, more importantly, you will also learn how to think like a winner. This won't likely be evident your first time through the book. Only later, and with a few losses, will his ideas hit like a lightbulb.
I'm a little annoyed at the last third of the book, a Q&A session that's repetitive and mostly filler in my opinion. Plus, there is much that could be written about the game that I haven't seen in any book. Until that book comes out, this is still the best.
The most comprehensive book on Standard Seven Card Stud in print........2006-03-21
This is the most comprehensive book on Standard Seven Card Stud in print. The book's language is straight forward and understandable in my opinion. It is also my opinion that anyone capable playing Seven Card and with a basic command of English should be able to understand this book.
The Advance part comes from the fact that many of the plays in this book do not work in lower limit games. The games where the strategies in this book are geared toward no longer exist. At least I don't know where to find them. This is also stated within the text of the book by the authors. There is a chapter on loose games that can guide on how to adjust to lower limit stud.
Still it is a good book to read. It will get you thinking and that is the real value of these books. Like Doyle Brunson's writing on No Limit Hold Em in the original Super System, I would never play like that. That style doesn't work for me. But Doyle was right! A chance of 4 hitting on the flop is just as good as the chance of an Ace hitting on the flop given the two cards are equally live. ( The difference has to do with if neither hit the flop which has stronger value....but hey I am not going to argue with Doyle Brunson). The point is Super System got me thinking about strategy in different ways and I took what work for me and ditched what didn't. This book does the same. It makes you think deeply about stud.......In my opinion.
One thing this book did for me was explain why I make some of the plays I make. After a while there were certain ways of playing that developed in my game. I do things because they seem to work. What this book did was help me understand in many cases why I play the way I do. Also, in some cases how to reevaluate some of my play. So in this regard I guess it is more of an advanced text. You will need some frame of reference to get most you can out of it.
The Best Book on Stud Poker .......2006-01-31
I initially did not feel I played at the levels that would make purchasing this book helpful to my game. I bought some lower limit stud books and they helped, but not a lot. This book is for advanced players, but if you have played for a little while and are looking for a book on stud, I trust you will be okay with these concepts. The authors explain that if you play lower limits, you should tone down some of the ideas in the book, but overall, knowledge of the tricks of the game is quite helpful.
A great deal of the book covers play on 3rd street. After reading it a couple of times, I am a lot more confident in my decisions as to whether I wish to enter the pot or fold my hand. There is also a chapter on playing in loose games. When people are entering a lot of pots with crap hands, this chapter really helps you take full advantage of these situations. These situations are common in the lower limits and I found it helped my game a great deal.
Overall, I think the book was easy to read and the coverage of the game was very well done. While there are tons of situations in stud that make explaining it complicated, the authors have done a nice job of preparing the reader for any situation they may find themselves in. If you are familiar with the game and want a book to learn a bit more, I think most people can be brought up to speed with this book without first getting a beginner's level book.
