Great Reference Resource for the Serious Collector.......2000-06-21
Gregory Schaaf's latest book has turned out to be one of the most valuable and most used in my collection of books on this subject. Not only does he provide a concise and well structured biography on every important potter of the Rio Grande Pueblos, he also provides family trees, some great color plates and a number of black and white photographs of both the artists and their work. Bur Mr. Schaaf goes further than that, and supplies his reader with all-important pricing info, including the prices some of the potters fetched for their work at recent auctions. I use this book for researching; confirming or refuting the extraneous piece of information, and for simple reading pleasure. Sometimes I get the book down just to look (again!) at the pictures. A great job, and a wonderful companion to his earlier book of biographies on the Hopi potters. Armed with these two volumes, any collector of pueblo pottery will find himself making fewer mistakes on who to pursue, what to buy and how much to pay for it. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Close, but no cigar!.......2004-09-14
It is obvious from this book that J.J.Allen has a wealth of experience as a successful portrait photographer.
Unfortunately, this does not translate into being a good instructor.
While Mr. Allen clearly knows his stuff, his lessons are wordy, incomplete, and not well thought out. The portraits used to illustrate a point seem to be mostly chosen from his file cabinet rather than shot to illustrate that point. In some instances, examinations of the portraits reveal themselves to be shot in a method other than what is described.
Most of the fault, however, lies with the publisher, Amherst Media. The lighting diagrams are completely out of scale and sometimes wrong.
It is exhaustive to try and match, for instance, such elements as Image 22 and Image 23 with Diagram 11 and Diagram 12 on pages with no numbers with the accompanying text on pages 36 and 37.
On the good side is a wealth of excellent portraits in a plethora of styles and methods and a few true nuggets of solid advise that will be truly useful to the aspiring portrait photographer.
All in all, it is not a BAD book, it is just that for the money, there are many that are a lot better.
SIMPLE IMAGENS & SIMPLE DIAGRAMS.......2004-08-03
MOST PEOPLE INTERESTED IN PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY ARE EAGER TO FIND OUT HOW PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPERS MAKE IT. I THINK THE BEST WAY TO SHOW IT IS TO FEATURE THE FINAL IMAGE SHOWING ITS LIGHTING DIAGRAM TOO.THE AUTHOR SHOWS IN THIS BOOK HIS TECHNIQUE OF POSING AND LIGHTING IN A VERY CLEAR WAY.MOST CLASSICAL PORTRAIT IMAGES ARE FEATURED WITH ITS RESPECTIVE DIAGRAM IN A VERY SIMPLE EXAMPLE. THE ASSOCIATION OF THESE BOTH ELEMENTS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN THIS GUIDE.
Finally!.......2004-03-26
I have spent a lot of time trying to find books that would help me improve my skills in portrait photography. I would buy a book thinking it would answer my questions on technique, and the type of equiptment used, etc., only to be disapointed in the generalness of the information. Finally I have found a book that is specific enough to learn something solid.
Lighting..........2003-07-25
It is a wonderful book and I am glad that I bought it, no regrets here.
A bit dry but solid reading.......2003-02-23
I got a little sleepy several times trying to muck through the text, but all the info you need to get started setting up a studio light setup is there. Technical terms abound, though, so make sure you know a gobo from a barndoor.
Book Description
Portraiture tends to rely on standardized, established lighting techniques, but most photographers know that subscribing to traditional methods does not always flatter every subject. The techniques collected in this guide will heighten the senses of mystery and drama in a digital photographer's work by enhancing shape and contrast, keeping images fashionable and appealing with less reliance on natural light, and illuminating a subject's eyes without producing catchlights. In this manner, textbook lighting setups can act as a springboard to creating personal and artistic high-quality portraits featuring new, radically-altered lighting effects. Multiple series of before-and-after photos comprehensively illustrate how to utilize these new methods to create emotion-evoking works of art that do more than simply capture the likeness of a subject.
Customer Reviews:
You've got to be kidding!.......2006-07-11
I have created portraits for over 30 years. I read every book I can to observe the creative techniques that others use. I was stuned to start this book and look at the techniques. I thought that they were reflected the photography of an amateur, rather than a professional, especially one who is writing a book.
There were some statements that were made that were of interest.
However, the bulk of the photographs were poorly exposed and that was enough to be distracting.
I also found that the models used, no matter how much preframing the author did, did not reflect the mood that he had suggested that he accomplished.
All in all this is one of the few books in photography, that I am sorry I had purchased.

Book Description
This volume contains the text of eight poems by the third-century BC Greek poet Theocritus, together with an introduction and extensive commentary. This is the first full-scale commentary on the work of Theocritus since Gow's edition of 1950, and is the first to exploit the recent revolution in the study of Hellenistic and Roman poetry. It offers new readings of all the poems, which show both how Theocritus differs from subsequent pastoral poetry, and how his poems, through their influence on Virgil, established the Western pastoral tradition.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing, but of course essential for the Theocritean.........2000-06-07
No serious scholar of Hellenistic poetry will ignore Hunter's solid commentary..but as usual the academic presses tell a mistruth in claiming this new volume is the "first full-scale" whatever on the author under consideration since whenever..Dover's 1971 London commentary is just as solid as this one, and the saddest thing about Hunter's book is how he covers much of the same ground as Dover idyll-wise..better, it would seem, to have covered a different selection and allowed students to have both reasonably priced volumes on Theocritus than to repeat coverage of the same poems (a valuable thing for the seasoned Hellenist but less valuable for the beginner-if any young Hellenists are reading Theocritus anyway). Of course both books can be safely ignored if one is lucky enough to find the monumental 1952 Gow commentary..sadly, and scandalously, allowed to remain out-of-print. Those two volumes contain every poem with full commentary and translation. Without Gow, the best one can do book-wise is amass the Oxford Text (also by Gow) to at least have all of the poems and get this commentary and Dover's. The Loeb by Edmonds is way out of date text- and translation-wise. These poems are far too difficult for the unseasoned Hellenist to read without commentary, so every little aid helps.

"Glorious Technicolor".......2007-09-14
As an avid movie fan, and having grown up in the 1950's, I was fortunate to have seen films made in the original 3 strip Technicolor process; truly the "Golden Age" of lavish Technicolor produtions. This book is a tremendous guide to the developing process of adding color to motion and sound in the movies; any film fan will enjoy this book greatly.

Customer Reviews:
A lightweight and unfortunately dated biography, but useful enough.......2006-11-26
Michael Kurtz's STOCKHAUSEN: A Biography was first published in German in 1988. This English translation by Richard Toop appeared in 1992, and includes a few brief remarks on events which occured between the two editions. The book is emphatically a biography, for while it is understood that one can best describe the composer's life by the works he turns out, there is little heavy analysis of Karlheinz Stockhausen's music. In fact, it's almost as musicologically lightweight as Toop's biography of Ligeti, though it is illustrated not only with photos but also with many samples from the scores.
After a preface that vaguely descibes the mature Stockhausen's long writing of his opera LICHT (which was finally completed years after this biography appeared), we start with Stockhausen's birth. The history of his family and the interesting landscape of his ancestral lands is presented and, while coverage of Stockhausen's childhood and adolescent is limited, the reader learns how the young man first wrote a variety of literary works before deciding to become a composer.
Most of the book covers the period 1951-1975. We meet first the Darmstadt serialist, and see him become a electronic wizard. Entering the 1960s, Kurtz tracks Stockhausen's impressive world travels, including frequent visits to the U.S. and a highly significant first visit to Asia. The formation of the Stockausen Ensemble and its notable performances in a Lebanon cave and at the Osaka World Fair get detailed examination. Along the way, there are a few references to Stockhausen's personal life, such as his marriage to Doris Stockhausen, followed by his relationship with Mary Bauermeister and eventual parting. Kurtz never outright judges Stockhausen to have become an increasingly eccentric and bizarre figure, but enough details are there that the reader can understand why critics many feel this way.
One major downside of the work is the skimpy coverage of Stockhausen's life after the middle of the 1970s. Granted, Stockhausen had ceased to grant many interviews at this time, and was working with an intimate circle of family and close friends who aren't too talkative, so these decades would be a challenge for a biographer. But there's not even much talk of the musical output. We're repeatedly told that the LICHT cycle is a significant piece of work, but details about the operas complete up until that point are missing.
And while we see Stockhausen's place in the wider Darmstadt circle in the 1950s, there seems little attempt to place him in a larger context afterward. For example, the German composer was not the only one to turn to astral mysticism in 1968, as Per Norgard in Denmark did the same, but there's no such discussion of such trends. Stockhausen's close friendship with Boulez in the 1950s is mentioned, but the reader does not find out how the two men viewed each other in later decades.
If you are looking for serious analysis of Stockhausen's music, Robin Maconie's OTHER PLANETS is the book to get. Kurtz's biography is a good resource for anyone wanting a short overview of this highly influential and eccentric composer's life, in spite of its faults.
FASCINATING TILL LICHT.......1999-09-18
KURTZ' BIOGRAPHY IS EXCEEDINGLY RECOMMENDABLE FOR BOTH PEOPLE WHO HAVE JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS GREAT COMPOSER AND WANT TO KNOW MORE AND FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIS MUSIC BUT DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HIS LIFE EXCEPT STRANGE MYTHS (RELIGIOUS GURU WHO COMPOSED MASTERPIECES IN HIS EARLY YEARS BUT WENT MAD AFTER HE HAD COME IN TOUCH WITH EASTERN RELIGIONS). HOWEVER, THE PHOTOS AND KURTZ' MORE THAN JUST ENTERTAINING STYLE (ALTHOUGH PROFESSORS WILL MISS AN ANALYTICAL APPROACH) GIVE A GOOD IDEA OF STOCKHAUSEN'S CHARACTER AND HOW HE WORKS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE BOOK LOSES MUCH OF ITS FASCINATION AND RICHNESS WHEN IT COMES TO THE "LICHT-OPERN". BUT (AND THIS IS A BIG BUT) IT'S A SHAME THAT THIS BOOK WHICH IS THE ONLY BIOGRAPHY ON STOCKHAUSEN SO FAR ISN'T AVAILABLE ANY LONGER.
very thorough biography of stockhausen.......1998-10-09
this book does an excellent job of covering stockhausen's life from birth to present, and probably most importantly how his life experiences affected and continue to affect his music. very comprehensive, an entertaining read, and very informative.

The Best Book to Improve Your Bridge.......2007-06-07
I found this to be the best book to improve bridge for an intermediate player. I've read it four times and learned from each chapter each time. Since one plays defense on half the hands, it provides the best time investment to improve one's bridge play. It is also an entertianing read. I have recommended it to the bridge players I mentor.
How to signal, how to card correctly.......2006-03-01
The book focuses on leads, signals (Attitude, Count, Suit Preference), and how to card (what card to play in 2nd or 3rd spot), rather than general defensive principles.
The content is excellent, well presented (humorous!!), and best of all, has lots of quizzes. None of this skimming a section and figuring you know it, the quiz will let you find out for certain.
2 warnings:
1) make sure your partner is using the same techniques, otherwise you may get worse results. Its not that the ideas in the book are radical, they are mainstream. But if pard doesn't understand your signal, they may do something weird and you will be worse off.
2) The book is a bit technical (5 situations where this is a suit preference signal. If Dummy wins with a Q then signal count, otherwise ... If you can see the X in dummy then pard will know to do this, else that, etc.
You will need to reread it several times, and probably make notes.
VALUABLE STUFF, but ONLY as part of a partnership that understands each other.
Learning bridge defense.......2005-09-11
Kantar is exceptionally readable, with a sense of humor which makes a difficult subject enjoyable. He goes through much material, but quite thoroughly and clearly. It's a book that needs to be studied - not merely read - but a good student will gain enormously from Kantar's work.
Read it at least 5 times, it's worth it.......2004-11-21
This is a great book on defense, because Kantar covers almost every intermediate situation comprehensively and give you black and white rules for every situation. He doesn't in this book consider varied leading/signalling conventions but just gives one way to play, but that's fine as he explains his method clearly and shows why he recommends everything he does. I'd recommend it to every player.
Great Teacher.......2004-10-17
Kantar today is more noted as a bridge instructor than a bridge player. But one must remember that he is both and his latest book demonstrated both the instructional and practical sides. It is (as usual) clear, concise and ro the point. I like Kantar's prose, his ease of explanation and the way he sets just the right tone. Of course, he discusses the bid, the opponent and, most important, keeping track of the play while counting the cards (the one thing that separates the professional from the amateur). Good book with tons of examples.
