Reading Charlotte Salomon

Book Description

Charlotte Salomon was born in Berlin in 1917 and was murdered at Auschwitz at the age of twenty-six. While in exile in the south of France from 1940 until her deportation in 1943, she created some 1,325 small gouaches using only the three primary colors plus white. From these she gathered nearly 800 into a work that she titled Life? or Theater? A Play with Music, which employs images, texts, and musical and cinematic references. The narrative, informed by Salomon's experiences as a talented, cultured, and assimilated German Jew, depicts a life lived in the shadow of Nazi persecution and a family history of suicide, but also reveals moments of intense happiness and hope. The tone of the gouaches becomes increasingly raw and urgent as Salomon is further enmeshed in grim personal as well as political events. The result is a deeply moving meditation on life, art, and death on the eve of the Holocaust.

Salomon's art, discovered after the war in the south of France where she had left it for safekeeping, was first exhibited in 1961 and has gained steadily in reputation since then. A major exhibition focused on Life? or Theater? appeared at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1998, subsequently at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Jewish Museum in New York City. This book, lavishly illustrated with many color plates, is the first to analyze Salomon's work critically, historically, and aesthetically. It includes a chronology of Salomon's life, a list of exhibitions of Life? or Theater?, and a filmography. Featuring contributions from prominent art historians, literary and cultural critics, and historians, Reading Charlotte Salomon celebrates the genius and courage of a remarkable figure in twentieth-century art.

From the reviews on this page I special ordered this book hoping it would be good and I was very dissapointed. The writing is choppy made it hard to get involved in the story line which I will admit is very creative. If you too are tired of every popular black author you read writing about what people are wearing, driving, how their hair looks like, and what club they went this book is not for you. This is an ok first effort but not 5 star material.

i didnt even finish this book because it was blah blah blah. i am a person who love books that will keep my attention, i like novels that has drama and twist to them, if you ae that kind of person this book is not for you. it didnt hold my attention long enough to finish the book

Love and Turmoil.......2001-06-18

I could not give this book five stars not because it wasn't an excellent book but because the ending did not satisfy me very much. I believe that this is the first book by Sungee and I feel that she did an exceptional job in telling the story of young black people coming into their own. It was a mixture of sadness, happiness, and love, also a little animosity. She also didn't forget what happens to a woman scorned. I could not put this book down. It was an enjoyable read.

I first saw this book on an artist friend's coffee table in Santa Fe.
I know they say don't judge a book by its cover, but that's exactly what compelled me to pick it up & upon opening it, gasp at the wonder of being introduced to the work of this incredible photographer - though to say he is simply a photographer does not begin to do justice!
I'll admit I'm the first to spend all the grocery money on books, but this book, though dear, is printed to the highest standard of quality & not sparse in any way, so to me, well worth saving for & splurging on.

Luis Gonzalez Palma is a true artist with a beautiful sense of the people of his country. His work captures the heartbreak and passion that is Guatemalan indio culture and brings it into reality by using fantastical images and old time sepia toned style. One of the most amazing photo books I've ever seen.

A very good pocket guide. This book, unlike many other techno-style books, stays true to the genre which it claims to depict. It lists alot of artists and when used in conjuction with the rough guide to House, and Drum N' Bass, you pretty much get all the info on Electronica you need in three pint-sized books.

Not Very Informative or Complete.......2000-12-17

I recently ordered this book, as I don't know too much about Techno music and I remember the Rough Guide to Rock that was once online (but has since disappeared) being fairly informative and well-written. However, I realized after getting this book that the Rough Guide online seemed good precisely b/c it was online, and free. At least when it comes to music (I've not read any of their travel books), the rough guides are not very thorough or involved in the subject matter. You could probably get all the information in this book free online from the All Music Guide. And also don't expect to get complete discography information. You just get one or a few recommendations for each artist and sketchy details in the entry about their recorded output. It is generally well-written though.

A Hard Task Well Done.......2000-08-23

Tim Barr with the help from some other writers has done an outstanding job on this rough guide. You can feel his love for the music as well as gain from his sharp ear and expert knowledge of the genre. Mr. Barr covers a lot of ground over about 15 years of music from many diverse artists. He does a great, "rough" job, but even so, is very detailed. Artists from Europe, America and Japan are covered. Unlike the Rough Guide to Drum 'n' Bass, Barr's descriptions are more interesting, more enlightening, and less biased. Rarely does he rip on an artist, and instead works to find each artist's unique flavor and angle, giving respect to every type of techno out there, from rave acid house to Detroit techno, to hard, punishing techno to minimal techno, to soft, ambient and more intelligent forms. He has a broad appreciation for the music which is essential to any great understanding and criticism of electronic music and its various interpretations. If he does have criticisms, they are warranted and unavoidable. Of course, this is a "rough" guide so many artists are missing. Just on the American front, it would have been nice to have seen Single Cell Orchestra and Young American Primitive included in there, but Barr does more than a sufficient job. Maybe in later editions he'll be able to append some that were left out or missed. Well written, a pleasure to read, informative, passionate, measured...a great guide. I'm a huge techno fan and have been writing for a magazine for over 4 years about techno and dance music. Knowing what a challenge this must have been, and being appreciative of an open-minded, and more unbiased crit, Techno: The Rough Guide, stands as a great testament to this music's creativity, artistic integrity and commitment to innovation. It'll make you proud.

On a less important note, the black and white pictures are all quite nice, many of them excellent, capturing the playfulness and humanity of our intrepid heroes.
