Book Description

The poster was the popular art form in Cuba following the Cuban Revolution, when the government sponsored some 10,000 public posters on a fascinating range of cultural, social, and political themes. Revoluci n!, produced with unprecedented access to Cuban national archives, assembles nearly 150 of these powerful but little—seen works of popular art. From the 1960s through the 1980s, the posters rallied the Cuban people to the huge task of building a new society, promoting massive sugar harvests and national literacy campaigns; opposing the U.S. war in Vietnam; celebrating films, music, dance, and baseball with a unique graphic wit and exuberant colorful style. With an introduction illuminating the rich social and artistic history of the posters, and rare biographical information on the artists themselves, this striking volume offers a window into the story of Cuba—and a truly revolutionary chapter in graphic design.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cuban revolutionary art..........2004-05-25

This book has excellent Cuban revolutionary art in it... Page after page covering many different artists and styles... My favorite piece is one which has a man crucified to the dollar sign = $... So true, so true... Money over all, even living a real life... I highly recommend this book to anybody who has an interest in revolutionary artwork since this is very high quality, or a place who does book exchange, or indie book stores to stock it for sell, etc... I'm going to buy this for a friend who is a political comix artist, who I'm sure will love it - Savannah Skye...

5 out of 5 stars Colorful, Interesting, Excellent.......2003-12-05

This is a very nice and entertaining work on a fascinating subject. Cushing has done his homework, preserving a bit of Cuban heritage that otherwise might have been lost to history. A fine book for any artist's collection, or just to flip through on a rainy day at home.

5 out of 5 stars Just a Review.......2003-11-03

Composed of a beautiful assemblage of colors, organic contours, prideful expressions of international solidarity with various exploited peoples, cutting edge graphic design techniques, and politically charged subjects, most of the posters presented by Cushing draw artistically from both the traditions of the broadly based, international design styles popular during the late sixties and early seventies as well as those historical subjects, civic concerns, pedagogical projects, and cultural traditions specific to the newly articulated aims of a developing Cuban socialism. Readers familiar with the design styles popular during the time periods in which the posters were produced will recognize that many of the posters reflect the coloring schemes and typographical advances developed internationally during this time. For example, the San Francisco style of design, comprised of bubbling fonts and vivid color arrangements that graphically mirrored the visual experiences of LSD users and hippy culture, can be found in the work of Fernandez Reboiro and Raul Oliva. Aside from overt political proclamations and anti-capitalist polemics, there to exists a wide range of stylistic inventions, visual juxtapositions, humorous `in jokes' and embedded satire. In describing the thematic cohesion of the selected posters, Cushing also brings attention to the surprisingly "low quotient of socialist realism-the relative absence of heroic, amped-up superworkers and production equipment so prevalent in the revolutionary artwork of the Soviet Union, China and other communist countries." Not only an intensely beautiful collection of historically significant poster art, Revolucion: Cuban Poster Art presents an important work that deepens our understanding of Cuban culture, politics, and artistic achievement at a time when the Bush administration intensifies its venomous attacks upon all things public, collective, non-commodified, and autonomous of U.S. militarism, aggression, and imperial supremacy.

This beautifully compiled text constitutes a rethinking about Cuban aesthetics that expands and challenges rather than limits our understanding of the role of poster art in the social transformation and historical trajectory of a problematic yet dynamically contoured socialist project; the meaning and significance of which is of vital importance to those deeply concerned with the articulation and formulation of an ethico-political vision rooted to the struggle to obtain basic social provisions, expanded forms of dignity, and socioeconomic justice for those people and countries historically rendered silent under the cacaphonic chorus of imperial capitalism's triumphalist babble.

The pedagogical importance of such a work derives in many ways from its potential to rejuvenate and widen our understanding of the cultural and political life of Cuba. Secondly, having been archived, researched, and designed by a librarian whose active commitment to transforming both the library profession and reorientating reductionist perceptions regarding Cuban culture toward a richer, more nuanced reading, we're better able to appreciate the quality of the book and its contents from multiple perspectives.

In these intellectually uncritical times where the shallow end of ideologically suspect, Manichean binaries continue to render pluralistic and reflective forms of dialogue and investigation mute, Cushing's book represents a refreshing rupture with conveniently amnesic and unreflective standpoints regarding Cuba/U.S. relations. In order to further our knowledge of Cuban political and artistic culture without the cemented weight of baseless hysteria and moral absolutism's as is commonly constructed and circulated by those Yankee imperialist supporters and pro-globalization apologists in both the "politically quarantined" academy and corporate media; scholars, journalists, cultural workers and educators must begin to extend their understanding of Cuban/U.S. relations beyond merely the accented points of the dominant, either/or rhetoric that ultimately functions to mute alternative and radical readings that bring to bare the complexity of ideological and material factors.

5 out of 5 stars Silkscreen the Revolution!.......2003-07-02

I'm a Reagan-loving conservative, but I've got an enormous fondness for communist propaganda art. I went to see Mr Cushing's talk at Black Oak Books in Berkeley on June 30, and his passion for the subject in person was infectious. Certainly, in his brief talk to give some historical context to the posters, many in his audience -- largely Berkeley radicals -- shuffled uncomfortably in their seats when he suggested that "things aren't perfect" in Cuba, but while Mr Cushings general support of the Revolution in Cuba was really quite secondary to his brilliant -- and inspired -- explanation of the history of these fantastic works of art.

The book itself is simply beautiful -- with scores of pictures representing each of the major poster styles produced in Cuba since the Revolution. There is sympathy for the Revolution, but no preachyness about the glory of equally available state-rationed asprin or the easy equality of justice in the tropical gulags.

But the book is only about the revolution to give these art works context. It is a book about the brilliant visual artists who provided the color and design splash to their Communist revolution. Each of the posters is a visual treat -- I especially like the Army Chess Tournament poster (a hand-grenade forming the body of a Knight) and a few of the abstract Vietnamese-solidarity posters.

Mr Cushing has done a fabulous job learning about the authors of the posters and he has made a brilliant first effort to understand and celebrate communist poster art in an increasingly non-communist world.

Once you get beyond the tedious and slavish devotion to French Belle Epoch posters among the poster art chattering class, there are too few great poster books as it is -- even of WW2 propaganda posters -- this clearly ranks among them. And to have it be about such a great and underrepresented area of poster knowledge is doubly terrific.

This is a first rate art book and a first rate history book. And if you like poster art at all, this ought to be on your shelf.

Viva Cushing!

          Book Description

Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Andy Kaufman -- add Bill Hicks to that list of brilliant, fearless comics. Just emerging from underground cult status when he died at age thirty-two, Bill Hicks spent most of his life making audiences roar -- and censors cringe -- with biting social satire about everything from former president George Bush to rock stars who hawk diet Coke. His nervy talent redefined the boundaries of comedy in the '80s and won him a list of admirers that includes John Cleese, George Carlin, and Thom Yorke of Radiohead.

This posthumous biography reveals for the first time what made Bill Hicks tick -- what made him laugh, what pissed him off, and what he saw as his ultimate mission: to release people from their prison of ignorance. From his first comedy gig at Bible camp to his infamous cancellation on The Late Show with David Letterman, Cynthia True portrays an artist whose outrage, drive, and compassion fueled a controversial body of work that still resonates today.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, But Certainly A Good Read.......2007-06-11

Though really, you should just go ahead and start with Bill's body of brutal, powerhouse work, this still stands as a good supplement to that material.

Ms. True may not have met Hicks, as she said herself, but her love and fascination with him is obvious, and it's enough to carry the book through to the end.

          1 out of 5 stars Just bad.......2005-10-26

The first sentence in this book goes like this..." I never met Bill Hicks..." Well, that does not up the authors credibility for me. I quit the book halfway through because it lacked cohesion. This book could stand to have an editor and another editor whip through it.

3 out of 5 stars coulda shoulda woulda 3.5 stars.......2005-08-22

I only wished that the book could have been three times as long with most every detail of Bill's life revealed, but that's living in dream world. What we have here is a labour of love from writer Cynthia True, who does a very good job research wise and keeps the reader turning pages, falls just a bit short with the subject she had to work with. Because of the book's rather short length (this is no Albert Goldman doorstop) many of the details of Hick's life seemed to be glossed over. This only occured to me after several readings of the book. After the first reading I was satisfied, but alas, Bill Hicks was so interesting I just want more, more, more. There's commentary from nearly all of Bill's friends from childhood to his last years, and many of his comedian friends step up to tell a bit about Bill. American Scream, albeit a fine read about Bill Hicks, ultimately doesn't capture the sheer greatness of the man's body of work and doesn't really try and get into the mind of Hicks, maybe this purposeful (it probobly was), but Hicks, just like Lennon and McCartney, Lenny Bruce, and Elvis, was a mind well worth delving deep into.

          4 out of 5 stars Worth Reading........2005-07-07

A lot of the people trashing this book are die hard Hicks fans that feel the book isn't up to the same standard that Bill's comedy is, and they are completely correct. The author isn't a great writer, by any means. That doesn't mean the book isn't worth reading, though. Even though the writing is mediocre at best, the material is top notch. The biggest hack in the world could write about Hicks, and it would be worth reading, because he is that interesting. And one compliment I can give this author, is she is obviously a fan. She wrote this book lovingly, and it makes the ending of this book and his life that much sadder. If you're a Hicks fan, it's a must read. It's still very enjoyable. I look forward to a better BIO one day, but I could definitely live with this one.

2 out of 5 stars Great comic; interesting life; poor book .......2005-04-19

I am a big fan of Bill Hicks and I was interested to learn more about him. This book did not help. This is a rather dull biography providing a largely chronological account of his all too brief life interspersed with copious extracts from his stage material. It totally fails to capture the spirit of the man.

If this is your only exposure to Bill Hicks then you will never understand why he was so fantastic - go straight to the source - don't bother with this book, buy a Bill Hicks DVD (e.g. Totally Bill Hicks which includes a documentary and a performance) or CD.

                            4 out of 5 stars Informative, but it's a game...........2006-08-03

Okay, let me start out by saying that I found thids guide very helpful. That being said, I bought it to learn cheat codes for the game or see how to make a bigger studio lot. The guide does not provide ANY cheats for the game, and I did not learn any way to make the lot larger, which is a drag because by the final third of the game, my studio lot is always too full to add anything else. So, the new technologies and sets I was researching were useless to me unless I wanted to delete earlier things.

This book is heavy on stats and figures, which can be quite helpful. The only reason it didn't get the entire 5 stars is that it didn't really help my game. I didn't pick up any vital new information that I needed for the game.

The writer also seems to forget that this is a book about a game. How writing is so serious. It does not seem to be written by someone who actually enjoys playing the game itself for fun. Yes, that's what this book lack. It isn't any fun.

I must admit that I only read game manuals or help books if my computer is down or I can't play the game itself, like if I am waiting for the game to show up in the mail. I learn how to play games on my own or with the help of an in-game tutorial. If I can't figure out the game, I don't play it. I don't like things with large learning curves. Let me learn on my own or forget it.

I also want to make it clear that The Movies along with its STUNTS exapsion, are my most played games. I LOVE making the movies: hiring the players, crew, stuntmen, and writers. I olove creating and filming scripts and competing with the other studios. It is a great game.

The book about it is good enough. It just didn't wow me with new info and it wasn't that fun to read because the magic and imagination of the game was missing from it.

                            5 out of 5 stars The Movies.......2006-06-26

I haven't actually read it, but I own The Movies and I think it's a great game. If this guide will acknowledge you with everything you need to know about it and provide walkthroughs, I'm guessing the guide should be awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Very good colorful, helpful (for the numbers behind the ratings).......2006-01-24

A very colorful and helpful book. It gives many of the numbers behind the game. Did you know that you can only use each of the cars three times before that item reaches its overuse limit and future copies of that item only generate about 40% effectiveness rating? This book gives this and many other figures behind the game. It is very, very colorful and detailed in the game's style. It also explains what all the buildings do and what effect they can have on your stars. Also, it tells you about the different research packs you can get. It gives more instruction on how to play the game. The back section tells you how to create your own movies for people to watch online, and gives tips for making a good movie. There is also a guide to winning the Platinum Lifetime Achievement award.

This guide did help me a bit, and explained many of the calculations of the game's ratings system. Still, it is not all that big a help for me, because I played the game for 10 hours already before reading this book. However, it still gave me insight on many of the "behind the scenes" rules and ratings calculations. This knowledge let me improve my rankings on the charts.

Have a desire to be apprised of political developments in Swaziland or the Philippines? Wish to stay current on sports scores in Sweden or Uruguay? Then perhaps it's time to tune in to world-band radio, already heard by 600 million people around the world. Passport to World Band Radio, 1999 can show you how. The New York Times dubbed this book the "TV Guide for world-band radios," and that's a fairly accurate assessment. Passport is dense--it's much heavier than its compact size suggests--with articles, program lists, equipment descriptions, and the Blue Pages, a comprehensive channel-by-channel guide to world-band schedules. Whether you are new to short-wave radio or a long-time listener, Passport is your ticket to adventure on the world's airwaves. --Brenda Pittsley

                              5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-09-22

This is a great book for both the beginner and experienced shortwave radio listener. This book lists tons of stations with the frequencies and time they are on the air in an easy to read format.

Find a station on a frequency and don't have a clue as to what station it is? Just look in the blue pages, it lists every shortwave frequency and has a table that lists station, time they are on, and language spoken for that frequency. This book also has a section with a list of stations that broadcast in english, along with frequencies and time.

Along with frequency information this book also has reviews on a few of the popular radios on the market along with some in depth information on a few stations on the air.

Overall this is a great book to have for the avid shortwave listener.

Why do you have to pay for so many advertisments? This book should be free.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating 'Road Map' Of The Ether.......2002-02-25

SW band-cruising can be entertaining. But just as a good map can help you to better enjoy a road trip or sunday drive then a good 'map' of the shortwave bands can also make the shortwave-surfing experience much more rewarding. By far and away the best 'map' is the Passport To World Band Radio which is published annually. This is a great book that contains a wealth of information on equipment and procedures as well as the broadcaster's frequency listings showing who is on the air at what time. It also gives contact details for the broadcasters - a boon for those who extend their hobby to collecting QSL cards.

Hard-core DX-ers with Ten-Tec or Racal gea through to enthusiastic newcomers with a budget portable - all manner of SW listening is catered for by this book. Buy it every year!

"Passport to World Band Radio" is so easy to read and understand -- you will just love it! I am new to short-wave. I became tired of the US media never touching on global concerns so I decided to find out how I could listen to global news services. I bought myself a short-wave radio and this book. Now I'm set!!

"Passport" tells you everything you need to know on how to get started listening to short-wave. It tells you where to tune, day or night, to find all the great global programs, and it even gives you tips on how to position your built-in telescopic antenna or set one up.

Does World Time confuse you? Well, fear not! With "Passport" you will receive step-by-step instructions on determining your World Time. If you do not want to figure it out, just look at the chart they provide for your convenience!

"Passport" doesn't leave you in the dark when it comes to station listings. They make sure to tell you what stations they feel are superior and worth hearing. If you are new to short-wave and do not have a lot of time on your hands, this is a definite PLUS. (Oh, and "Passport" makes sure you know when a country is changing its frequency for the summer/winter months.)

If you like skipping around the dial and come across something that possibly sounds french and want to find out more, you simply need to search by frequency and time to get all the detailed information about the station you are listening to.

I know you will enjoy this book. I do not have one single complaint about it!

                              Enjoy,

                              A.

I purchased this book to learn more about radio. Great book for learning about the "how to" of World radio and packed with lots of information for the experienced radio person. It comes complete with listening times for World Radio stations. The program guide is somewhat difficult to understand at first. I also subscribe to a magazine, Monitoring Times. This magazine is like a monthly TV guide with local times listed for your time zone. This book and the magazine make a great tool for the World radio listener.
