Not perfect but the best available on the topic: A must own f/ collectors.......2005-09-09
This book was long overdue. Granted, there is an earlier book published by Albert Field that attempted a catalogue raissonne but this one done with help from longtime Dali collaborator/confidant Robt. Descharnes is at least as good and perhaps better. If you are a Dali print collector you are doubtless familiar with the rumors of forgery and fraud surrounding much of Dali's print ouevre. If you are not, the introductory material in this book will help to bring you up to speed. Fortunately, most of the flim flam material is off-set lithography and doesn't actually come within the purview of this book which covers only Etchings and Mixed-Media prints from 1924-1980. In reality, this is the pithy meat of Dali's print work. It is were a collector will find the most expensive and desirable prints and it is also where it showcases Dali's mastery of the drawn line. The format of the book is an introductory discussion of Dali's print-making history and the evolution of his signature and choice of paper. (Interestingly, there is an illuminating discussion of a couple of his most important print editions, especially the 'Chants de Maldoror' that any serious collector must become familiar with). Then there is more than 100 pps of color plates that highlight a lot of his prints, and here is where I lodge my only complaint about the book and which, in my opinion, brings it down a notch. For, the color reproductions at times have a slight, very slight, grainy-fuzzy quality to them which speak of less than stellar Book-plate reproduction values. This is a shock because this is a Prestel publication printed and bound in Germany; other books from this publisher that I own are of extreme high quality. Following the many full page color reproductions is an approximately 130 pps. raissonne with extensive edition information including dates, edition sizes, printers, publishers and media. This is an excellent resource and also a beautiful, well-made art book even with the tiny demerit for less than perfect reproduction values, and a worthwhile purchase for people who collect prints, enjoy prints, and enjoy Dali's work in that order.

Definitely for beginners.......2005-07-27
The book is well written and has great illustrations and especially good information on products for the beginner. It really shows how much fun textile surface design can be however I must stress that if you have done much work with surface design at all, this book will not be very challenging. It is a great book for beginners!.
Great Ideas and Instructions.......2002-09-20
What a lot of great ideas in this book. The instructions were easy to follow, and the designs were so beautiful. I am just a beginner with designing for my home, but with this book I know I can do it. Thanks for the wonderful book.

Bad Company.......2007-06-19
An exhaustive list of notorious bad boys, and few not so. Each averages about 4 to 6 pages, and you get to know the misdeeds. The criteria is strange because in order to be labeled as a bad boy, one qualifies by bedding down thousands of women and that's it. That's Warren Beatty. Or you can be caught one time, and you are forever labeled as a bad boy. That's Hugh Grant. The book got it all: 70 bad boys. The list ranges from McQueen to Brando to Charlie Sheen to Affleck to Depp to Phoenix to Clark Gable to Gary Busey to Marky Mark to Van Damme to Lowe to Penn to Dean Martin to Don Johnson. Like I said, very exhaustive list. The book was written in 2002. From 2002 to now, I don't think there have been many changes with exception of OJ Simpson, Robert Blake, Charlie Sheen, etc. I really learned alot of those guys because one thing for sure...I don't pay attention to their backgrounds...I just watch their movies. This book is the surest and fastest way to catch up, if you want to stay ahead of the tabloids. I was extremely surprised by the false truth behind River Phoenix's death. Initially, I thought that it was a one time thing, but it turns out that Phoenix was an habitual drug user. Excuse me if I am decades behind everybody. Couple things I don't get. Why include Howard Hughes in the book? He wasn't an actor. Two, if he is included, then Parish ought to include Sam Peckinpah, Oliver Stone, Andy Warhol, and Dennis Hopper. Secondly, why include Andy Dick? He is just a loser with absolutely no credentials in Hollywood. All in all, the book is a must-read.
A GOOD READ ABOUT BAD BOYS.......2006-03-27
THIS IS A GOOD READ ABOUT SOME OF THE BAD BOYS OF HOLLYWOOD. AMONG THE MALE ACTORS COVERED ARE BEN AFFLECK, JAMES DEAN, DEAN MARTIN AND BURT REYNOLDS. THE STORIES ARE 4-5 PAGES BUT ARE PACKED WITH DETAILED INFO CONCERNING DRUGS, DRINKING AND SEXUAL BEHAVIOR THAT WILL SHOCK ALOT OF PEOPLE. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS WELL WRITTEN AND INTERESTING BOOK. I HAVE ALSO READ HOLLYWOOD BOOK OF SCANDALS BY THIS AUTHOR AND ENJOYED BOTH VERY MUCH. IF YOU ARE CURIOUS ABOUT THE SCANDAL CONCERNING THE SO CALLED STARS OF HOLLYWOOD THEN THIS IS FOR YOU. VERY RECOMMENDED.

Getting Past the Tabloids.......2002-10-04
This is a fascinating look at Hollywood history. Bad behavior is as old Hollywood and bad boys go back to the earliest days. But this is not a simple recap of tabloid stories; this is an indepth look the backgrounds and careers of these bad boys. It also traces the consequences of this bad behavior. The book could also serve as a cautionary tale; much of this bad behavior is the result of booze and/or drugs and in many cases derailed or completely destroyed promising careers. I recommend this highly interesting book.

Even a beginner could learn the game from this book!.......2006-11-13
This book covers all the questions anybody would have about this complex game. I've searched all over the internet for answers but most rules and gameplay written on line seemed like poorly translated rules from Chinese or whatever with many mysteries left unturned. This book is great and with minimal reading gets you playing in no time.

A good introduction to the game for beginners, with strategy advice that will be useful to more experienced players as well.
Whitney explains clearly and concisely, using easy to understand diagrams. She even manages to explain Mah Jong's rather complex scoring system, which can be a bit off-putting for beginners.
Her inclusion of the differences between Japanese and American rules is also quite helpful, although I've found that as with any game, some of the rules and terminology vary from region to region.
All in all a good book for those looking to begin playing Mah Jong, particularly those in Japan or with Japanese friends.
A tour de force.......2002-08-29
The Mah Jong Handbook presents an amazingly clear method for approaching the game. The book is easy-to-read, but deals with every aspect of the game in detail.
To get the most out of the book, I recommend taking the time to work through the example exercises yourself (before going on to the analysis discussion.) Once you've gone through the book this way, you'll pretty much know everything that an expert player knows. The only thing left is to get in enough playing time to put the theory into practice.
In addition to the game aspects, the book discusses the accompanying rituals and etiquette, as well as many variations on the rules.

Eleanor Noss Whitney has not only succeeded in writing a concise, understandable, and comprehensive Mah Jong handbook, she has elegantly and expertly distilled into a mere 176 pages the essential tools and strategies to achieve true mastery of this ancient and wonderful game.
Whitney's handbook is the only book that most players will ever need to become a knowledgeable, confident and winning Mah Jong player. The basics of play, including seating, dealer selection, wall-building, tile-dealing and play are laid out clearly with helpful examples and good illustrations. The scoring of Mah Jong is explained with numerous carefully-constructed examples, with helpful diagrams of each tile scenario for good visual reference.
The strategy of the game is brilliantly explained in Part III, again with numerous examples that gradually train beginning players how to quickly make strategic decisions to enhance their play. As Whitney explains, Mah Jong is a game governed by sheer luck of the draw, yet the "skillful player is actually one who knows how to adapt to his luck." Her extensive explanations and examples of both "offensive" and "defensive" strategies are the soul of the book, and I, for one, was amazed how quickly my comphrehension of the game improved after having read the entire chapter.
It is true that the focus of the book is primarily on the Japanese and American rules and variations, but Chinese equivalent terms are included in an extensive Glossary-Index. For the vast majority of players, this will not be a serious problem.
If you buy one book on Mah Jong, it should be this one.
